I recommend seeing the inside of the home first and then touring the basement. They started building the home in 1874 and moved in during 1877. The family lived in the home until 1895. The home had many modern updates most homes did not have in that time period. It is beautiful and I love the history. Parking is free. They have a small gift shop in the ticket area.

Home of the famous whooping crane photos! Salt Flats is a…read morefun art gallery in the Rockport Cultural Arts District! They focus on wildlife photography of animals around the Texas Coastal Bend. They do a really cool technique where they print the photos on metal, so it has a timeless, permanent look to it, with a metallic sheen to it that makes the colors on the birds and other wildlife just pop! They have a whole gallery here in the Arts District of Rockport. They show off a bunch of other cool, local crafts and stuff for your home. Keep an eye out for all the wind spinners out in front of the place. They'll get your home transformed into a Texas beach house in no time! The gallery staff is quite friendly, and the prices are quite reasonable, considering the time and effort that goes into each of these photos, and the process of printing them on metal. When asked how the photographer gets some of these incredible shots, she always responds, "Patience, luck and a little magic is the key to my success." Parking is usually pretty easy at this gallery, and they have park benches out in the shade, where you can watch the traffic go by, and adjust to beach time. It's a wonderful place where there's plenty of shade out front, with a good breeze that powers all of the wind spinners out front. I suggest you check it out!

While I personally didn't find anything that I needed to have in there, it's a very nice little shop with lots of powerful air conditioning, and a nice lady who was happy to let us stroll through, checking out all their wares. They have a large selection of local artists, doing cool and innovative things! They have a variety of media- jewelry, accessories, stuff for the kitchen, closet, and paintings. The shop was clean, and parking is easy! The prices were quite reasonable, and all the stuff was quite interesting. This shop is of many cool little art galleries along the main drag in Rockport. It's a fun way to get some culture in while you're at the beach!

Not accessible via wheelchair or stroller, unfortunately. I adore little art shops like this one! So glad I popped inside on a whim. They've got a variety of art from local artists, working in diverse styles. Saw a few interesting pieces and took home a lovely wooden wall hanging from an Austin artist. Don't miss the cookies at the check-out counter (vegan and gluten-free and delicious). The London Fog was yummy (I'm a fan of the drink but it's a cookie flavor I've never encountered). Owner (Danya) was so sweet and welcoming. She gave my daughter a sticker (they're not free) so I really appreciated that. Now, I do need to mention that you've got to climb some stairs to enter. So unfortunately it's not accessible to folks in wheelchairs or anyone looking to bring their baby stroller. I believe owners are trying to rectify this -- it's quite an endeavor so don't hold it against them. If you have a stroller, I recommend leaving it outside and just carrying your kid (don't let them run free if they're handsy -- lots of fragile and breakable stuff in here). You can also carry the stroller up the stairs (the owner even offered to help us do this but it was easier to just leave it). We left our wagon stroller outside and watched my 3.5-year-old closely while I carried my 22-month-old. Worked out just fine.

This coastal-themed gallery is in a nice little retail space, right across from the Winery on the Bay in the Rockport Arts District. They keep regular hours, but they also have a monthly Arts Walk that the Arts Council coordinates, and they stay open late, serve up some wine, beer and cheese, and show off their greatest works! I really enjoyed the nautical themed paintings, as well as the ones of the local Aransas County wildlife. They also do frames, which look really neat! The owner, Mike was super friendly, let the dog come on in too! The shop was super clean, well lit and fun to visit! Rockport has a reputation for being a funky arts town, and this gallery does a great job of representing!

Cool museum with beautiful gardens! I came to the grounds…read moreof this museum for the Hummingbird Festival brunch! At this event, they had tables set up in the gardens, around the gazebo in the center. We got to take in the wonderfully catered brunch, while checking out all the hummingbirds, and the flowers they have growing! The gardeners have thoughtfully identified each type of plant growing in the garden, so you can look up more info on them later! Smart! They have statues and birdfeeders, and the gardens are official Monarch butterfly way points and stopping grounds. Inside the museum, you'll find a bunch of information on Connie Hagar, who set up the first Rockport nature preserve, and a bit on the history of the Key Alegro development. It shows a bunch of historical artifacts, and some stuff on the wildlife of the area. Interesting! The Aransas County area has long been a destination for nature lovers, and this area expresses the local love for the natural aspects of this coastal county. The museum is ADA accessible, and has ample air conditioning and clean restrooms. When I went, it was free admission to the museum, because we were there for an event. Not sure if it's free or open every day... I'm glad I came in! I certainly learned more about the development and history behind the area! Thanks to the History Center for making us feel welcome and providing such great grub! Yum!
