SUPER gross experience with their "Mexican" food. It wasn't just bad, it was AWFUL. Their shop is attached to a convenience store, there was no server, just one of the two folks that work there would occasionally come around as I think both of them were in the back cooking also, and our wait for the gross food to come out took forever despite it being slow the night we were in the restaurant. Perhaps the are more known for their Honduran, but if you want good Mexican food in the area, HARD PASS on this place. We just ordered your basic chicken-cheese-and rice dish and the chicken was cold and dry, the rice had little flavor, but the CHEESE was the WORST offender. My family and I arrived in town late on a Friday night and we were hungry. A lot of restaurants near where we were staying were already closed or getting ready to close. We decided to give this place a try and I'm glad we did! This is definitely a "hole-in-the-wall" and not a polished tourist destination. It's a restaurant and a grocery store. You order in the grocery store. The menu on the wall is in Spanish, but they have English language menus available by the cash register. For an hour or so before they closed, I was surprised how many people were here. Not so crowded that we had to wait, though. The dining area is clean and comfortable. The staff was friendly. The food was delicious! We were brought some chips and fresh salsa once we sat down and with the exception of my favorite local Mexican restaurant, this is one of the best salsas I've ever had. My meal came pretty quickly. It was called Pollo Fiesta, which was chicken, queso, and rice. Lots of rice and queso, and good amount of chicken. By the time I was done with everything, I was very full. As others have mentioned, no cerveza, and the drinks are by the bottle. Since they're also a grocery store, they have a lot of options for drinks. Since it was late, I just went with bottled water. Would I eat here again? Absolutely! This place is a diamond in the rough! We didn't want to fight the crowds at any of the tourist traps in town and had seen this place a few times on the drive to our cabin so we stopped in. The service was great and friendly. We all got tacos and they were so freakin delicious! I also got a chicken quesadilla that was very good. But the star of the show was definitely the chorizo tacos. They're all served Mexican style: on corn tortillas with onion and cilantro. There's also a Latino supermarket with lots of snacks and supplies. Wow! What a surprise to find this authentic Honduran restaurant and grocery in Gatlinburg amongst a bunch of chain restaurants and tourist traps. If you're looking for the real deal, try this place! The food is excellent! My husband and my mom and I ordered 3 different Honduran entrees (They also have a Mexican menu!). We tried the Honduran enchiladas, Honduran tacos and the fried chicken with green plantains (the best!). All were so flavorful and presented pretty on the plates. I loved the cabbage salad and picked onions. Service was so friendly and welcoming. Food was decent, but not good enough to make me want to return. Service was slow. When server came to take our order we weren't quite ready. She never came back so we went to counter to go order. TV was pretty loud and to make it worse, customers came and sat behind us and played a video on their phone even louder. Really wanted to love this place. We chose to support this adorable hole-in-the-wall Hondumex restaurant, as opposed to the usual, crowded places that cater to tourists. I thought we'd get some authentic, delicious food here. They don't serve alcohol. We were hoping for margaritas but that's okay! I ordered the Honduran steak tacos, and they were pretty dang good. The rice, however, was tasteless, and the beans tasted like black olives and were thin, with big chunks of non-bean objects, and I simply could not eat them. My friend got the "fried chicken", which was really just baked chicken in a sweet sauce, served with plantain chips. The place may be authentic, but the food is bland and unpleasant at times. I liked the tacos, and I plan to recreate the steak/avocado/crema/onion combination at home soon. So the building is very humble, but some of the dishes are absolutely amazing and authentic. This is a small Honduran-Mexican menu restaurant (literally a Honduran page and a Mexican page) with a small tienda at the end of Gatlinburg downtown with free parking out front. My Carne Asada was served with rice, beans, and plainains; wife's fajitas were seasoned well and very tasty. Kids loved the wings and giant burrito; and yes, the chips and salsa were right on point. The food was plentiful and delicious. The waiter was fun, as well. He allowed my 7 year old to practice his new magic trick on him, and explained the menu items well. He kept the water filled, and was patient with my kids having trouble with his accent. If you love lines, questionable service, and that "faux-authentic" atmosphere, patronize Jose's. Very rarely do I disagree with the ratings on yelp. However this time we were miles apart. The food was terrible. My daughter had a chicken burrito. It was nothing but rice and beans with a few pieces of chicken. I had ordered fajitas for my son and myself. As with any fajitas they came with a side plate with rice, beans, very little lettuce, tomato, a small dab of cream and a slice of avocado. I put most of the toppings on my daughter's burrito which unfortunately did not help. Everything was very bland with little flavor. The restaurant was completely empty when we got there on a Sunday at around 7 PM. We perused the menu and saw that there was a Honduran menu and a Mexican menu. We had some trouble deciding what we wanted to order, but we finally decided. My husband was not very impressed with his meal because he thought it lacked flavor. I will note that his meal was a big portion, and I was impressed avocado was included in the salad. (It's usually an extra cost at other places I've been.) I ordered the corn tamales, and I really liked them! The unbeatable $5 price and delicious cream dipping sauce were favorites. It did seem slightly dirty in there, but the food was clearly made fresh. We browsed the grocery store a bit, and there were some intriguing Honduran foods available there. Even though we ordered to go, the kind employee brought us fresh chips and salsa to enjoy while sitting at the bar. We were really impressed by this kind of service! Really irresponsible with their schedule. We were looking for something authentic and found this place. It stated it was open and would close around 9/10pm. When we pulled in it was some minutes before 8pm and it was closed. We came back the next day for lunch and the food was alright. It was like 6.5 , nothing special about it. On our last day before leaving our vacation my son wanted rice and beans so we stopped by real quick and it was 10:50am and they were suppose to open at 10:00am but they were closed once again. We waited outside for like 10/15mins until the owner came out and we asked her is they were going to open and she said maybe in 30/40mins because she had " errands " to do and would come back later. 1 star is for friendly and 1 star is for the half an avocado they put on my plate. To start I loved it was a dive, and had a convenience store as well. I thought I would buy some snacks as well after our meal for our trip ahead. Nope, not after that meal. They had dueling big screen tvs blaring different shows in a very small space which is hard if you have sensory issues but I get that's my issue. But then they turn on a jukebox, LOUD. It's chirping bleeping bird noises before a song and I've the two tvs blaring, bring in a gaggle of ppl and I'm ready to pull my hair out. Oh well, in pops the ear plugs. The chips were stale, as were the tortillas. The homemade cheese was so wet it squished like an old sponge in my mouth. The rice was just white with a touch of salt, no onion or pepper. The meat was so chewy it was more like jerky than steak. The half an avocado was good.
