I've been going to Estrellita's since they were in the stall at the La Cocina space in the Tenderloin (forget what that was called). My first visit there I wasn't sold on their pupusas but when their brick and mortar location here opened up I went again to see how it was since I love pupusas and now they are in my regular rotation. The space is big and service is friendly with the free coffee (which I don't actually drink since I'm not a coffee guy). While it's not the fastest, the food is terrific so I am fine waiting for my delicious pupusas! I usually get the pork, bean and cheese pupusas which are really good but mixed it up last time and got the jalapeno and cheese ones but felt like there wasn't quite enough cheese in those so I'll prob just go back to the pork, bean and cheese ones since they seem more balanced. I also love both Balompie locations for pupusas if you need a reference on the types that I like. read more

Estrellita's Snacks is a new restaurant that has recently opened in the Tenderloin area. The service is great, we arrived around 4:45pm after work and even though they close at 5pm they took us in, got us seated, the owner herself took our order. The food tastes great. The agua frescas were not too sweet n had that fresh taste from real fruit that I love. We ended up ordering pupusas, a side of yucca frita and a tlayuda istmenas and everything had good taste. I am full Salvadoran, and I love to taste pupusas from various restaurants :) Strellita's pupusas were great they passed the test. I also loved the Oaxacan cheese on the tlayuda istmenan dish, this was my first time trying it. Estrellita's snacks is a great place to visit for Salvadoran and Oaxacan dishes. A chill place to enjoy Central American dishes with friends or family. It was definitely a good experience. read more

So far I've only had their food at their food stand that they have near the transit center some Wednesdays. I got the pork and cheese pupusa combo, which came with plantains and rice as well as the usual salsa and curtido. I was not sure it would be big enough but it ended up being huge, I wasn't able to finish it. They even gave a lot more curtido than other places. They made the pupusa fresh there. I'm not an expert on this type of food but I think these were the best pupusas I've had so far. They had spicy and non-spicy salsa, I would recommend the spicy unless you really don't like spice, it was not terribly spicy. That particular booth seemed like it was getting overlooked between the fancier and flashier looking places that were also in the plaza, but I would say it was a lot better than the average food truck food you usually see downtown. read more

I've tried this place three times and have been unimpressed each time. The first time, I ordered a pupusa from their stand at the farmers market, which was decent. Later, I noticed they opened a new location on Ellis Street, so I decided to give them another try. I ordered a pupusa again, but this time it was dry with minimal cheese. On my third and final visit, I ordered the carne asada plate for $30! The price is outrageous considering the quality and portion size. The carne asada was so dry/overcooked I had to tear it apart with my fingers because the knife couldn't cut through it. They provided a very small portion of black beans (picture posted), and the rice was dry and lacked flavor. Overall, I was disappointed and won't be returning. read more

YES! One of my coworker's brought me here for our lunch and after walking around La Cocina, I decided to try Estrellita's. Not only do pupusas sound good all the time, my coworker mentioned that Estrellita's is the same vendor that is at the Civic Center Farmers Market on Wednesdays. Once I had a bite of their food, I understood why there would always be a line of people waiting to order from Estrellita's. The pupusa's were made fresh and the pupusa platter was a perfect serving of each delicacy. I enjoyed the authenticity of the food and the love that was put into making it. I'm even more excited that I can find pupusas not too far from where I work. I look forward to trying more of the pupusa flavors in the near future. read more

This is a new Salvadoran restaurant that just opened a few weeks ago. The breakfast platter was excellent and so are the pupusas. Staff is friendly, they are still getting things setup but definitely growing. I visited their stand previously in a woman-owned and minority-owned food hall in the Tenderloin and was impressed with the masa used in their food. Since the shelter orders took place, I haven't been able to visit farmer's market at UN Plaza on Wednesdays. So I was ecstatic to find out that they're available 5 days a week! They're located at the new La Cocina Municipal Marketplace. This food hall is only taking take-out orders. So you can order online for pick up. I was surprised that the prices are similar, if not the same, as their stand at farmer's market. But there are plates available. I got the plato de pupusas, which comes with 2 pupusas of your choice, rice/beans, plantains, crema, salsa, and curtido. At farmer's market, you have the option of getting a spicier salsa, but not at this location. Also, the amount of curtido you get is smaller than the farmer's market location. I think it's the perfect amount for me, but I know some curtido lovers out there that would need the small bag they give out at farmers market. For $18 total (including tip), it was a big meal for me. I powered through the 2 pupusas, but I couldn't finish the rice and plantains. They're gonna be a good snack later. The quality of food is the same as their stand, which is unsurprising because after years of getting pupusas from them, not one has disappointed me. I got the mushroom and cheese (my favorite) and the revuelta (pork and cheese). Both were delicious. I've never had the rice before, and it was good too. I love plantains, so it was like a nice dessert. SF Restaurant Week starts tomorrow (April 9, 2021), and they are participating. So if you haven't had their pupusas, then this would be a good time to check them out. I'm definitely coming back here again! read more

I had all but given up my search for vegan pupusas when Estrellita's blessed me with their deliciousness! I work in The Presidio and stumbled across their tent last week as part of the Tunnel Tops food pop-up. After trying one of their tasty vegan pupusas, I made sure they would be back this week and ordered three this time! They also have maracuya agua fresca, my absolute favorite. I happy danced all the way back to work today thanks to them. They also have tamales and different kinds of fried chips, will need to try those soon! Pupusas here were awesome! They're serving some of the best that I've had in the City. Got it at the Farmers Market at Civic Center. I would highly recommend the chicken and cheese. I shared an order with a guy at work and we both agreed it was fire. Specifically, I liked that there was a good amount of filling, and they were not stingey on distributing the pickled vegetables (curtido) or hot sauce. Not crazy oily either. Prices were about what I'd expect, and fortunately they do take credit cards. What more could you want? Definitely will be back. read more
