I love all things arts and crafts. And someone at The Etc. Shop seems to too. There's all kinds of Frank Lloyd Wright and Charles Renne Macintosh inspired jewelry and accessories. Of course there are other things too -- that's where the Etc. comes in -- but it's always the art deco stuff that attracts my attention. The posh Brighton collection is apparently The Etc. Shop claim to fame. The coordinated accessories, which include shoes, jewelry, watches, sunglasses, belts and more, are very nice, but they're not any more attractive than the other accessories throughout the store and a bit pricey for my taste. If I splurge here, I'll take the ultra cool Macintosh-inspired lamps over the pricey-but-average Brighton items any day. read more

ANOTHER Brighton shop! How many does Kansas need? This one sells Brighton, Italian charms, and Frank Lloyd Wright inspired home furnishings (lamps, furniture, pottery). Because of this, it is a bit more interesting than just the boring Brighton collection (which is their main focus, carrying the whole line). A bit expensive, but then again charms do come from Italy, and the jewelry is high quality being hand made sterling silver. The home decor is quite nice, being an art deco (FLW influence) style. But the Brighton does overpower, making me gag a little on all the coordinated, shiny, accessories. If I were re-decorating, this is the place to come to give my place some stylish touches, but otherwise...might just have to pass by next time I'm in Lawrence... read more

I have shopped at this store for years and have bought many items here. I think that the merchandise is overpriced, but there is an excellent selection of good silver jewelry that you don't see everywhere. For my birthday my husband bought me a necklace, when my birthday came he realized that he had left the item in the store. When he called he found out they had retrieved the item and put it in a safe place. I am grateful that they didn't replace it in stock-which they could have done. However, it would have been very easy for them to do two minutes of research and call us to let us know that they had the necklace. Sometimes a little extra effort can really improve business more then advertising. read more

I understand times are tough, but I feel a business will see it through is if it is ensuring customer loyalty and good word of mouth, NOT having one of your staff as a rude guard against theft. Since I've moved away to Seattle, EVERY time I've come home I always make a trip to Lawrenc, which includes a trip to the Etc. Shop. Everytime time, even every trip to this store during my time spent at KU, was and has been very pleasant. They have lots of great things in the shop and the sales staff is friendly. Until yesterday, when I was accused of stealing two $10 wallets. (REALLY?) The whole situation was utterly absurd and very embarrassing. I entered the shop with my mom. We split up to look around the store. I usually love looking at the beautiful jewelry up front and mom likes the Hobo bags of which she bought a bag and matching wallet the last time we were there. As I was headed around the store I stopped in a little closet like area that had items for sale in it. I noticed a green and yellow wallet that had "Kristine" written on them. It was the brand name. This happens to be the name of a friend so I thought I'd buy them. I took them out of the little closet like area (Mind you, there's no sign anywhere around this area that asks you not to remove the items.) and took them to show my mom the strange coincidence of the name on the wallets. After looking at the wallets a little more I wasn't sure my friend would like them so I set them down on a table, looked at a few more items, and then used the restroom. After leaving the restroom I asked mom if she was ready to go. We looked at a few more items and headed towards the door. Mind you neither of us had on big coats or were carrying big bags. I had wristlet and mom and no bag with her. As we were leaving a lady approached us and in a rude tone asked me about the wallets. I replied that I had left them at the table (bewildered look on my face as to why this lady is being so rude to me) and was told, not asked to show them to her. So, I took her back to the table and pointed them out. As we were walking back to the table she was explaining to me loudly that the security company had called. In my head I was thinking "Does she REALLY think I would steal something?" She never apologized for making a spectacle of me in a busy shop or said please or thank you. She never brushed off our situation as "Oh you know how times are these days..." No, she treated me (I teach Pre-K. I lead the Young Adult Group at my parish. I LOVE Lawrence.) like a thief. I was so embarrased and still cannot believe how I was treated. Honestly, if stealing has become such an issue for this store, perhaps the could empploy some theft deterrent device at the door like most stores use? Or perhaps asking the customers to check bags and coats behind the counter? The Etc. Shop by its very nature and prices attracts a higher end clientle and employees need to consider this when interacting with customers. So, on the way out just so the employee knew what had happened (She had just lost her store two customers.) I said to my mom, "This is the last time we come here." To which the employee replied, "Well ladies that's just what happens sometimes." read more

The owner can be quite rude and unpleasant, as she was to me, and she won't return your money, even for a defective product. I bought for my mother a Julia Knight dish for Christmas. Almost immediately and with no washing, the green lining separated from the silver dish and created several sharp edges. After my mother cut her fingers badly several times, the nursing home staff put the dish away in a drawer. I made the mistake of getting it out again, and promptly cut my finger on it (deeply) while putting papers in it. The product is clearly defective and dangerous. I tried to return it to the Etc shop, receipt in hand, but the owner refused to give me my money back. "We don't sell defective products," she claimed, even while picking at the sharp edge of the dish. She said she would return it to Julia Knight for a replacement. When I pointed out that that must mean she thought it was defective and should be returned, she became abusive and ordered me out of her shop. No need, since I would never shop in a store that did not back up its products. Beware. read more

I popped in to check out the Italian Charms for my bracelet. They are hard to find anymore except for online. They had a large selection, but they were kind of overpriced. They had some other really cute items though. read more

The clothing items in the store are just fabulous. Hand made wool sweaters, hats, and mittens. I couldn't find anything like it anywhere. And the finest leather military inspired bomber jackets found anywhere. One of the true treasures of Downtown Lawrence. And Linda is such a peach - what a wonderful woman. Her staff of regulars are really great too. Overall - A Great Place to Shop For That Hard-to-Shop-For Person. read more
