Three nice sized pieces of cod, battered all crispy and fried just right. It came out of the kitchen sizzling hot. We have ordered fish and chips from Maine to Galveston, Seattle to Key West. They don't get better than this! Just to compare, we also ordered the fried shrimp basket. Another clear winner! The shrimp were very fresh and the batter was deliciously crispy, sizzling hot as they arrived at the table. The staff was warm and friendly, and they accommodated with a smile every customer who walked in the door. I can't rave about the ambiance like I raved about the food but hey, we sat at a clean 2-top and what else could we need. Just between you and me I overheard the front man tell a customer there is a $3 discount on fish and chips on Friday. Don't tell anyone!

My partner ordered the lobster roll and was pleased with the the quantity of lobster, size and taste of bun, as well as the side salad that it comes with. I had the fish and chips. 3 decent sized pieces of a thinly coated fresh perfectly cooked cod. A good stack of crispy french fries and side of coleslaw. The plates are smallish rectangles. The fish sits stop the fries. Condiments were individual packets. What I wish I knew about eating the fish ahead of time. The thin battered crust broke apart very easily which led to the fish flakes falling out. Couldn't dip in tartar sauce without it disintegrating. It was a struggle to enjoy it the way I normally eat fish and chips. The trying to squirt out tiny amounts of ketchup for the fries was an additional pain. We enjoyed the seafood and will be back with my own bottle of ketchup and will ask for an additional plate to separate the fries from the fish.

Almost all the markets in the Asheville area only carry frozen/defrosted seafood. I was born in a little fishing village in New England, three houses from the docks, and am used to buying fish directly from the boat, so frozen just wasn't getting me what I craved. Locals Seafood has its own trucks to bring in fish fresh from the boats on the North Carolina coast. This might lead to slightly higher costs than at the megamarts, but premium quality is always worth at least that, if not more. Over the last month I have tried their Tile Fish, Swordfish, Snapper and Black Drum, and every meal was wonderful, the fish was pristine fresh, firm and flaky. The staff is great, very friendly and attentive, and always willing to share cooking tips and tricks. the store is squeaky clean, all the fresh fish resting on ice, which they pack with your fish to keep it cold on the way home. A few months ago, I noted that this was a fresh seafood distributor. Or, as the owner Jason Janson would say, "your personal seafood purveyor." Which is both really cool and convenient - really cool because I have always wanted a personal seafood purveyor, even when I didn't know that I needed one (kind of like the ATM before there was an ATM) and convenient, because he is on my way to and from the gym every Saturday morning at 11AM (opening time). Prior to this first visit, I had scoped out his seafood offering on Facebook. There are several good selections, mostly all from the Carolina Coast, with the exception of some lobster tails, or halibut collars, or such specialty items. What makes this personal is that you can go to www.broadwatershrimp.com and join their email list and do pre-orders from there. This is a handy piece of information. I arrived for my first visit after seeing that they had live soft shell crab available and it is peak season right now. Fortunately for me, there were only six available soft shell crab that had not been on a pre-order. And I showed up at 10:30AM, so I was a bit early. They had pre-orders for 32 crab and had 38 on hand. My lucky day. Even at $12 each, still a bargain for this delicacy. All the other seafood looked fresh and excellent, but I was tapped out on seafood for today's budget. Other items are reasonable, but this is special. Jason also sets up on Friday's at the Swamp Rabbit Cafe from 11AM to 4PM but check his website or FB page as this is a full mobile market but also a pop-up location situation that may change. Jason mentioned he is also a personal chef and will be doing a full on Master's golf food spread for a client come this Sunday's final round of the Master's 2024! This seafood market and his personal chef are his primary income, so get out to visit and support this excellent market so we can have it around as an option!
