Each time I'm at a new town away from home I try to visit a local gaming store. This one visited I purchased cheap sleeves for a new Redemption TCG demo deck I'm using at the South TX Royal Rangers annual leadership conference in Humble TX. While I was test-sleeving the cards I met with the store general manager Ken and Derek, one of the managers. Gave Derek a KL starter. He and Ken were extremely professional and hospitable. We also had an amazing and fruitful gameR chat. The store is amazing, well-stocked, clean. The management also makes sure that noise level from players talking is kept in control. I came back the next day to buy more card sleeves. Another store employee was there to take care of me. She was likewise amazing. I LOVE this store!!! I've been shopping here for a few years to buy birthday & Christmas gifts for my awesome brother who LOVES board games, Magic, Star Wars, D&D, etc.! Every time I walk in this store an employee is always eager and happy to help and my brother LOVES everything I have got him from Ettin Games and Hobbies! While my brother is a MUCH MORE Magic: The Gathering player, I am not and I do not have much experience playing Magic. I almost always lose. My brother asked me to play a commander game with me and showed me which cards to play and way and I ended up winning for my first time so I guess I got the "bug" for playing it. Remembering that Ettin Games sells Magic cards & etc., I looked them up on their website and read their event calendar. When I see that they do commander casual play, it peaked my interest so I called to ask about their events. When I called, I first spoke to a SUPER nice and helpful employee named CJ who explained their events to me. I explained that I would like some help learning how to play Magic: The Gathering; that I'm not very good at playing it; and I don't have much experience. CJ told me that every week, they have players that come and LOVE to work with and help new players play MTG and that, also, their "Magic Guy", Willie would be there and that Willie plays MTG and loves to help other players as well. I was told that Willie would help me put together a White deck and BOY did he!!! I was SO EXCITED and grateful!! I meet several REALLY COOL people (2 of which helped me ALOT). Both Willie and another player let me play their decks and try them out! I had SO MUCH FUN!!! Willie put together a really nice white deck for me that I'm SUPER EXCITED to try out!! I recently met the guys from Ettin Games at Space City Con: Winter 2014 and they were enthusiastic as well as helpful about their new venture into the local Houston gaming scene. Their stock of product is massive, they offer a service that is sorely needed on the North East side of town. They're making a strong presence known in the community through excellent use of social networking and attending CONs. Later, I stopped by their new store (located next to Italiano's) and I was welcomed with the same great enthusiasm as they expressed at the CON. The store had new tables for gaming and a large selection of stock. Ettin Games and Hobbies was established by a group of gamers for gamers. So you know they know what you want to see and experience in a game store. Their primary focus is to provide a place for gamers from beginners (noobs) to advanced players to purchase, play, or learn some of our favorite games. From wargames, role-playing games, dice games, and card games. They have several custom made terrain tables set up along with regular tables for role playing groups. They also offer in-house miniature painting services. This place is bad ass! They have so many games in their library (which are free to play!)! They have a ton of events, and they have such nice people too! If you want to play almost any table top game in existence or to hang out with generally nice people, I'd suggest giving this place a visit! read more

In a time of need and uncertainty you can count on this shop to pull through! I wanted to purchase a game that I knew they had but with the threat of corona and "non-essential" stores to be closed, Ettin was "closed" but we're fulfilling phone and online orders through shipping or pick-up. The owner and staff were super friendly as always and were welcoming in this time of fear. Highly recommend and can't say enough nice things! I've been coming to this store for tabletop gaming for several months now even though it's quite a drive from Westchase to Humble, but it's worth it as I consider them to be one of the best gaming stores in the Houston area. While most stores seem to survive on Magic the Gathering tournaments, this one is more about board games and tabletop games, which is nice because those can be difficult to find. They have a great community of regulars on Wednesdays and on the weekends who keep things going, and everyone is friendly and welcoming. If you've ever thought about learning or just looking for a pickup game, then this is the place for you. The store can be a bit hard to find because it's tucked away almost under an overpass, so give yourself a few minutes if you're coming in for a scheduled game. They do sell snacks and drinks at the store if you get hungry during a game, and there's also a few eateries next door (like Papa John's) so you won't have to worry about leaving for food if you plan to spend all day there. I like the fact that they let you open a tab so that you can just pay everything at the end once you're ready to leave. If you can't make the drive out to Humble, just look for them at local conventions (like Comicpalooza and Space City Con) as they always show up to sell their merchandise and run the gaming events. So if you're looking for like-minded folks who or need a space for your group or family to play in, then I definitely suggest you give this store a try. read more

I have been to the store twice before during the week when it was slow to pick up games they ordered for me and the owners son was nice. That's the ONLY reason they are getting two stars. On my trip today for a Flea Market they were having to trade a game I didn't want and maybe find a new game. Well, being an African American tabletop gamer, I get the stares and surprise to see me, since it's not to many of us in the "hobby". But, today it was like I was invisible and had the black plague. Not friendly at all. I was ready to spend money today, but decided to walk away. I won't be going out to Humble for this store again. read more

This is my game store of choice to play at. The employees are very friendly and up for chatting. There are plenty of open tables to play on, and I've met a few people by playing here. There is also free WiFi and it's not unusual to see someone sitting here with a laptop. The selections are pretty good here, a lot of role playing books available. There's also a respectable selection of demo games in the back, as well as terrain. The place is very well kept, and spacious. There's almost always someone playing something here. Only con I see is the location is a little hard to get to sometimes. I've missed the exit for the U turn into the lot before, especially on my first visit. Overall, amazing place! read more

I cannot believe it has taken me so long to get to this review. I love this game store. The people are super friendly and know everything there is to know about games. The stock is plentiful and if by some chance they don't have what you are looking for, they people working there will help you get it. the back half of the store is set aside for game playing, which is awesome. There are regularly scheduled nights for different games, so you can have a regular meetup with folks that like the same kinds of games you do. They even have really cool swap meets from time to time. If you like games, you should definitely come here. read more

This large family-oriented gaming shop and organized play facility is one of the best in Houston. Thee stand-out attraction is their staff of professional gamers that are knowledgeable and friendly. As soon as you walk in you will see a sophisticated array of board games, card games, miniature games, and role-playing games such as Dungeons and Dragons and Pathfinder. There is a fully-stocked Star Wars gaming area, a very nice Magic the Gathering display, and even a good selection of wargames. What really sets them apart is the service, however. You will want to come back to participate in their regular, well-run tournaments, gamer "flea market" re-sale days once per quarter, role-playing game demos and other regular fun events. They will special order pretty much anything, and hold special late-night unboxing events for new hit games. They have even started creating live streaming events for Twitch from their Magic and Star Wars Destiny game tournaments. I'm really happy that there is a game shop close by that offers such selection and service, and look forward to trying a lot of the new games they bring in long into the future. read more

These guys are going out of their way to make sure your getting your game on! I first ran into them at one of their events, a flea market of sorts where people bring in their used games to trade or sell. We had a ball and have since also run into them at Owlcon. Ive spent all I could afford both times and will gladly do so again! They know their stuff, if one employee doesnt know they ask another, and give you honest answers. I've been to a huge variety of different card game/hobby shops to play MTG and I have to say this seems like the best one easily. Here is why Pros - Friendly community and owners - Clean and large play areas even the bathroom - Decent Prize support - Tab for Regulars (nice to be able to grab a drink and not interrupt game play) Cons - Google Map can't find this place due to the weird looping roads - Wish more people were interested in hanging out for mtg outside of tournament days. read more

Such an awesome store! My group and I come here at least once a month to play Settlers of Catan, and everyone is so nice. Not just the staff, but the regulars too. The board game library is extensive, and if you have the time, it's a great way to try out a game before you buy it. We love it here. read more

Came for a Magic PPTQ from out of town. The registration time was 10:30, but I was informed that people came in at 10am when the store opened and were allowed to register. A cap for the tournament (apparently originally 45) wasn't disclosed on any media regarding the tournament (except apparently on Facebook, which as an out of town person I did not look at.) The Ettin Games website had minimal information, including no info on a player cap. The prize structure is also kind of unfortunate, in that over 20 players the store took 100% of the entry fees off the top after reaching 20 players. I was told "the cap was announced in store multiple times, and also on facebook, so you shouldn't be surprised that it exists." Preregistration was a tiny paypal link embedded in a side link on the website (20 times smaller than the giant STAR WARS powerpoint), with no DCI # required, directly to someone. It was apparently arbitrarily increased to a cap of 50 players. I was told by an owner that it would not be any higher because the judges (an L3 Regional Coordinator and at minimum an L1) were incapable of having more than 50 people, all per owner. I've seen 50 person PPTQ's judged by a single judge go fine, but I didn't talk directly to the judges, so I'm not sure if this actually accurate. There were 29 numbered tables which would mean 58 people was the physical number of people that could play, instead of the random arbitrary caps of 45 then 50. I talked with one owner who brought the other over to me as well, and the second owner asked me "Its fifteen minutes before the tournament, what do you expect me to do?". Signing 8 more people up doesn't take fifteen minutes. As I answered him, he just walked away from me as I was talking to him. The front counter and the people doing the DCI Reporter input clearly had absolutely zero communication and I would never recommend this store to anyone based on how sloppy everything was set up and with how little information was presented. Having an owner just walk while I still had a question and was actively talking was extremely rude. read more

"By Gamers for Gamers". What more needs to be said? Nothing really. Ettin Games had a soft opening this weekend and was still in setting up mode due to a fortunate delays due to the recent rains. I came by to see how things were coming along and to get my first real look at the store. It's huge. They have tons of lighting and air conditioning, beautiful tile floors, and most importantly; a clean restroom. They have enormous gaming tables, perfect for any RPGs, Board games, and Wargamers. Even though the guys were still in the process of putting up shelving, placing product, and hanging the banner out front, that didn't stop them from welcoming customers. They welcomed visitors in to take a look , talk about the shop, and of course games.
