Oh good lord, where do I start... guy that works there is the absolute best, most knowledgeable person about anything in the store. Every time I go there (at least once a week) I learn a little something new about whatever I'm looking for (dice, minis, etc.) Every single time I've been there I've walked out with exactly what I was looking for because of the huge selection of well, everything. Not to mention significantly cheaper than other comic book stores, even in dnd boss mini prices (which are overpriced wherever you go). It's the best price you'll find no matter where you look. Paying my respects! As a kid I loved this place we always used to come here for all our board games and recently I came back to grab some things. They still got it going on in here. IMO a great place to find a gift for a comic or game enthusiast. So much fun stuff. Plus if you love old school or even some new school board games, this is one of the best places to check out some new favorites in Houston. The gentleman that works here is so nice, always a good experience and it was nice to be back. read more

A friend of mine invited me here to explore what they had. There was a huge selection of action figures, board games, comic books, and even manga. The store itself is pretty large. A lot of the items in there were vintage as well. The employees were generally nice and helpful. I'm not the biggest comic book/super hero lover so take this review with a grain of salt. Not sure if they sell comics or DUST! Probably the dirtiest comic book store I have ever been to in my 34+ years of reading/collecting comics. The employees are rude and seem annoyed if you try and talk to them or ask a question. There is no method to the madness here, just dishevelled mayhem and disorganization everywhere. Good luck trying to find anything, and if you do, expect to pay more than you would at almost any other comic book or game store, their prices are as awful as their service and atmosphere. To make it worse, they do not participate in Free Comic Book Day (the coolest day of the year for comic book stores and fans alike), and openly boast about not needing it because they are "so great and the oldest store in town". You're better off going pretty much anywhere else in town. Try The Pop Culture Company and 8th Dimension first, and if you're inside the loop, both Bedrock City and Third Planet are better choices than Nan's. They can brag about how they're the "oldest store in town", but they'll never be able to lay claim to the title of best, friendliest, cleanest, cheapest or any other positive trait you can think of. I thought I had grown past the times of comics and card games...but I guess everything comes at different stages for people. I used to play this very nerdy game magic the gathering back in middle school and surged while I was stuck in desolate Fort Worth, TX. I swore once I returned to civilization I would give up such hobbies and never speak of such dark times. However, I was recently given the information that this game has consumed my friends. They spend HOURS playing this game. I must say it is quite sad viewing it since they are such NOOBS. So I had to teach them a thing or two about the game. Anyways...I digress. To level the playing field I decided to purchase the current set of MTG cards and this happens to be my closest retailer. At 4 dollars a pack it's the same price you would find at target or Wal-Mart. They had no playing space, nor carried singles. With lack of proper training facilities, it's no wonder this generation of gamers are sub-par. NOTE: Watching too much BIG BANG THEORY may cause yelp reviews to be come overly NERDY. read more

Well I found most of what the previous reviewers to be accurate. New issues weren't even out yet when every other shop has them out without inconvenience to the comic enthusiast search. Comics in some very old storage containers and just bagged or completely naked.(saddest sight) There's no reasonable sort of organized method here I even heard an employee arguing the idea of organizing better; but was shot down on the idea. Prices don't match like I said they seem to be improperly stored. There's probably more inventory(Boxes closed on top of other boxes) but little effort to help you find anything if your looking for certain issues. It's really up to you to see if you're able to find something worthwhile at this location. Domy's slightly nerdier, less cuter, and heavier little brother. Things are more disorganized, not as clean, not as cutely displayed, and the eye candy is non-existent EVEN IF you do like portly video game nerds who have not seen the sun in more than a fortnight due to Red Bull fueled WoW shenanigans. Sami A.'s shout out to the CBG from the Simpsons is rather apt and telling of the experience you are embarking upon when you park in the lot and begin your perilous trek into the darkness. read more

Nan's specializes in comics and games. They carry one of the largest manga selections in Houston, including many rare and out-of-print titles. They stock many rare toys and card games. They also have a large selection of military history books by Osprey Publishing. My biggest issue with Nan's is that store is very unorganized and you have to do a lot of digging to find what you're looking for. The employees have never been very helpful and there have been times when the employees have come off as rude. While they're not my favorite, Nan's has always been a staple among Houston comic shops. I would recommend this place to some people, but not everyone. read more

I first stumbled across Nan's in 2005. The store was gritty and just the kind of place where you had to dig for reminders of your past. Some reminders were hung discretely in the back. Driven by here so many times to get on freeway. Was always curious. Now I know why I shop at Bedrock City Comics. Wow. This place is the worst. Not a word to me, even after I said hello. Got a brief glance when I walked in and no hello or acknowledgment. Only customer there at the time. Large collection of games, comics, and good nerd stuff. However, it is just thrown askew every where. Even the new comics have no rhyme or reason. Not alphabetical. Not by publisher. None of the older comics in boxes had cardbacks, but just janky plastic sleeves. Looked for about 10 mins for specific comics that i always try to find. Didn't even find any of the series. Another employee came and and just yapped at the other employee about why He originally wasn't on board with Gal Gadot for Wonder Woman and how much is too much to spend on a life sized Deadpool. Again, not a word from him to me. Another customer had come in at one point and said hello and got nothing in return either. So strange. I was actually shocked when I heard the Wonder Woman conversation as I thought it was a customer being engaged. Nope. If you want tabletop games they do have a huge selection. So that is a plus side. And they genuinely have loads of cool geekdom oddities. They must do most of their business with online sales as the first guy was just hammering away at the computer the whole time entering something. I must have briefly interrupted him when I first entered. Well they don't have to worry about my entrances here ever again. And I am truly EVEN MORE appreciative of Bedrock City Comics' customer service, cleanliness, and inventory. Far superior. read more

Let me say, I love this place. Though I can only review them based on their game selection. I'm not even sure what else is in the store besides board games and comics (which is in their name) since every time I go in, I immediately head left where all the board games are. If you are looking for an offbeat board game or just want something that isn't monopoly, this is the place for you. They have all types of games that would appeal to most age groups and tastes. I've seen games in there that were published in the 60s and never printed again on the shelves. You never know what you might find. I found a board game my high school Physics teacher published that I didn't think anyone really sold called Perfect Timing (I remember our class being his guinea pigs for testing it out). It is fun to just browse around to see what they have. I will say one thing though, their organization of their board games sucks. I have no idea how they decided to organized it, but it sure isn't in alphabetical order. Nor can I figure any other reasoning for it. I really do think they just stick random games wherever a space opens up. I've gotten all sorts of games at nans: apples to apples, Shear Panic (A fun, fast, simple game that uses way too many puns), various card games, and many others. And for those who prefer more traditional long ass games, they have monopoly and trivial pursuit. But don't think you'll be able to get REGULAR monopoly or trivial pursuit. You will only be able to find 20 other different versions of monopoly or trivial pursuit (like Simpson's monopoly or Friends Trivial Pursuit). If you are looking for a board game, I highly suggest Nan's, though some of the board games cost quite a bit as they aren't as massed produced as games like Monopoly. Though in most instances they are well worth the money and are much more fun than traditional games you can find at Target. read more

So the boyfriend has a tradition of making me go to comic book stores with every new city we visit. Sure enough, we randomly drove by Nan's and pulled over. The result? Well, think of every comic book nerd stereotype you can imagine (i.e. The Simpson's comic book guy) and triple it - that pretty much describes every single person there. But, apparently the boyfriend scored some pretty awesome deals on items he hadn't been able to find anywhere else. The store clerks were also friendly, if not a little creepy (I'm not sure how many females walk into the store, but based on the uncomfortable staring and heavy breathing, I'm banking on not many), and offered to give me a deal on The Sandman, Volume I in order to introduce me to the genre of comic books. If you're a comic hound like my boyfriend, this place seems like a hidden gem. Note: The stacks are completely unorganized, but the staff seem to have some secret way of knowing where everything is - so you should just ask. read more

Used the "Free Comic Book Day" holiday to check out some of the local shops and this one was on the list. Nan's doesn't celebrate Free Comic Book Day so the proprietor seemed a little annoyed (maybe because it was busier than it normally is). The prices are pretty bad here as well. Some single issues were more expensive than the original cover price even though they weren't any kind of "gem". Won't be back at this place, but it's worth one good look. read more

There are many comic book stores scattered throughout Houston. Stores that come to mind include Midnight Comics, Bedrock City Comics, Third Planet, and Nan's Games & Comics. Each Houston-based store has its fair share of positives and negatives. For one, although Midnight Comics opens until midnight six days a week, it has the weakest selection of items. And even though Bedrock City Comics doesn't have that large of a selection, it is the cleanest and most organized. And although Third Planet has a larger selection of comics and memorabilia than any other store, it is the most unorganized. However, unlike some of the better stores (Bedrock and TP), Nan's negatives outweigh its positives. One of the store's positives is the fact that it has the largest selection of board games out of any Houston-based comic book shop. Furthermore, the store opens later than most comic book stores (9 PM instead of 7 PM). However, the store does not come without its negatives. For one, the store is the most overpriced comic book store in Houston. I do not know anyone who would pay $10 for a 2 in. Homer Simpson bobble head. Secondly, the store is not as neatly organized as the owner thinks it is. Just because the store is organized into two sections (the left side, gaming, and the right side, comics), does not mean each section is organized. Because it's not! So in conclusion, there are better comic book stores out there for Houstonians to explore. You could do better (but you could also do worse)! read more

Hmm.. what do you say about Nan's? For many who don't know (remember), Nan's started out as a gaming store years ago. They began to lease a portion of the store out to the folks who eventually opened Phoenix Comics (RIP). When they realized that there was a buck to be made in the late 1980s, they decided not to renew the lease and to start selling comics themselves. So at it's heart, Nan's has always been a gaming store first and foremost, and it's ironic that the place resembles a dungeon, too. Today, Nan's is the epitome of what one would think of when someone says "comic book store." The storefront is stuffed with comic books, graphic novels and toys. That doesn't mean that you're going to find what you want since it's a disorganized mess in there. The staff has never been overly helpful, and I've been a customer for more than 20 years. In that time I've been to probably 100 different comic book stores around the country. I've only seen a fewer that were less organized. The prices are pretty average for a comic book store, but honestly, I'm usually pretty desperate by the time I have to set foot in that place. I always want to sneeze and wonder who could possibly shop there on a regular basis. read more

I have a great time every time I go to Nan's. It satiates my inner nerd like no other store. Any time I need an obscure board game, I go to Nan's. I've bought all my Rio Grande Games here (Dominon, mainly). I also really love the puzzle selection. They have the Pomegranate brand puzzles; Escher, Frank Lloyd Wright, Harper, and many other great ones. If you are into comic books or any sci-fi shows, one half of the store is filled with paraphernalia. I myself being a Doctor Who fan was very excited by all of the figures and toys. Not into geeky/sci-fy/fantasy stuff? Don't worry. Nan's has Scrabble, Monopoly, and other household name games. I could drop some serious money here because they have such a big selection, and also because everything is kind of expensive. read more

While visiting family/friends in Houston, I stopped by Nan's. What a great store! It's literally crammed full of comics, games (board and RPG), action figures, collectibles, t-shirts, toys, and dice. I'm a dice nerd and the fact that I spent about 15 minutes sorting through their huge selection really says something. (I found quite a few beauties to add to my collection!) The store wasn't hard to find, which is a plus. The guy working on the Sunday afternoon I visited was kinda sleepy, but I'd be sleepy too working on the weekend. Next time in in Planet Houston, I will return to Nan's to see what new stuff they've got. read more

Nan's is a decent comic shop, though since it caters also to gaming and other facets of pop culture, it doesn't offer the sheer breadth of comics selection that places like Bedrock and Third Planet will. The staff is pretty friendly, though not always the most helpful, and occasionally you'll find yourself waiting at the checkout area, even on a slow day. I think Nan's could benefit from a more thorough organizing of its trades (particularly independent comics), as well as a general cleaning and un-cluttering of its shelves. With all that said, I did find single back issues of comic books relatively easy to navigate and peruse. Prices and selection are decent for its size, and it *is* pretty neat to occasionally find a collectible you weren't expecting to see on the shelves. I'll give Nan's props for its "cool finds" factor, but overall I'd probably seek another comic shop for most of my general comic book needs. read more

Place is a little overwhelmed with stock but that's kind of a good thing. I like the search, like finding treasure. MAKE SURE YOU GO TO THE RESTROOM BEFORE YOU GO HERE. I would not suggest asking for restroom facilities or if you have children who use it a lot. Just saying. I brought my 1 year old niece here and she loves it, however you really need to keep an eye out for how the kids will interact with the items. If you don't take GOOD care of your kids, DON'T COME! Unless you're ok with paying for something that they break. That would be the most considerate thing to do. Anyways. Yeah so the employees are cool-as-S!#@. There's this one guy, looks like Santa-Claus. Kid you not. He's also got a Santa car for the Art Car show here in Houston. Recently found a Vega Tokidoki hat I've been looking for and the Back-to-the-Future 2 hat. HAD TO BUY. Be prepared for typical markups though compared to if you buy it from vendors at the Comic Book Convention. Though there are not many of those in Houston, so it's worth it. Board games galore. Great alphabetized stock of comics. Toys/nicknacks everywhere! OMG. I'm really wanting to buy the Gandalf the white staff too, just cause I already have the sword, Glamdring. Not a whole lot of parking however and it sucks trying to leave the shopping center because of the access/location near the highway. It's perhaps not as organized as, ahem, another place that I like to go, BUT the selection here is GREAT, the staff is AWESOME, and there is always a new find. The prices are good too.
