At the end of my transaction I asked a question around mask maintenance and the gentleman that was checking me out offered to help me burn off excess film from my goggles, great customer service. I purchased my full kit from these folks and have been back many times to upgrade/replace parts as they get worn down. I really don't know why I haven't reviewed ESDS yet. Maybe I thought I already had. Oops. Because, wow! This is YOUR dive shop. The staff are knowledgeable and friendly. They are helpful no matter what. Their instructors are great. They will sell you consignment gear if you're trying to save some cash if they have something that will work for you. They will also tell you that maybe you should pass on something. Their technicians are skilled. You might have to wait longer than you want for your annual regulator service, but it's worth the wait. They support the local dive club and the volunteer program for the Oregon Coast Aquarium. I remember years ago asking about the PADI Drysuit certification class. They said they don't really teach it, but if you buy a suit from them, they'll take you to the pool and make sure you know how to use it. I had bought a used suit. That suit had automatic ankle dump valves, so was a great suit to learn in. I eventually bought a nice suit from them, and they gave me an extremely nice price. They have good sales throughout the year, and if you don't mind the not-most-recent-model, you can get great values. They will always smile and take the time to catch up with how your life is going in aspects other than diving. Just all around great folks. I have heard rumors that employees of other dive shops in Portland come to ESDS for things like drysuits because the prices are so much better even with the pro deal they get at their home shop. This is just hearsay, so don't really trust that; just sayin' I have no affiliation with the shop other that the fact I took my advanced and rescue diver class through them, and they would have to really mess up to lose me as a customer. Even if a new dive shop opened in my city, I would probably still do my business with ESDS. You should, too! read more

I always assume I will receive great customer care when I visit local businesses, but I left Eugene Skin Divers Supply feeling like we received a level of customer service that is very rare. We are new to snorkeling, but Ron helped us navigate the myriad of mask and snorkel choices with kindness, patience, gentleness and humor. We were very impressed with him and his knowledge of the products! And to top it all off, I purchased a mask and snorkel in the colors of my Oregon State Beavers! It was a great day! Our visit will result in more business for this shop as we are sending our kids there to get outfitted as well. I cannot give a higher recommendation to a business. They helped me set up my Olympus TG-5 camera with a handle and dive light. Spent about 45 minutes in there getting help getting the right gear and attachments. I've been going to this Dive Shop since the 1960's as a punk kid and I took my first dive class at Sheldon Pool from the founder while going to Cal Young Junior High. It's been a family business that has provided everything you need for skin diving and for SCUBA. Their product line and service is top notch and they are an excellent place to learn how to dive; equip yourself for diving; dive with others; and to work on advance skills and training. I've seen two other dive shops come to the Eugene/Springfield area but none of them offered what ESDS has over the years.... and the other shops disappeared many years ago. Mike and his staff are friendly, knowledgeable, well trained, and helpful. If you're interested in learning about SCUBA and in exploring the "silent world" (or just need some quality skin diving gear for that trip to the tropics), this is the place to go and has been for over 50 years! A few months ago, I came up from Sacramento to visit a friend in Oregon and to dive the aquarium at Newport. Not wanting to waste a chance to get more dives in, I called ESDS to see if anyone could give me tips on shore diving. I spoke with John and he got me very excited about the prospect of crab diving in Florence. Trouble is, I don't know any other divers in Oregon, let alone many people who would be free to dive on a Monday morning (the only day I could dive due to my itinerary). John bent over backwards to find me a dive buddy for the time and day I wanted and he must have called at least 10 people on my behalf. Luckily, I found a match with another customer who was coincidentally at the dive shop gearing up to go crabbing on Monday. Sure, I rented my gear here because ESDS is partnered with the aquarium, but I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them for gear needs for any type of dive. Not only did John help me find a dive buddy when I thought all was lost, he got me outfitted in well-fitting, quality rental gear in good condition. He made sure I knew all the legalities of crabbing in Oregon and where to get a license. He even told me where I could get a Ducks t-shirt in time for the Oregon-Michigan State game. As a new diver, the whole process of renting and buying gear, scouting a site, checking conditions, etc. can be extremely overwhelming. John made the whole process easy and allowed me to feel calm and confident getting into the water. His advice and expertise helped me take what could have been a ho-hum trip to see a friend and turn it into a very exciting vacation with some great memories. When I returned my gear, John wasn't working, but I did also have great experiences with the other 2 gentlemen who helped me return gear and purchase a few small items. Overall, possibly the best retail experience I've ever had, scuba or not. read more

I was in Eugene on a business trip when I decided that on my upcoming trip to the Caribbean I was going to go scuba diving. I only had a month left before my trip and not wanting to waste any time during my actual vacation I decided to call Eugene skin divers supply to see if they could get me certified. ESDS couldn't have been more accommodating with my schedule. even though I had done my pool sessions in my home state, they worked around my crazy schedule to ensure I got certified in time. My instructor Margaret spent a good amount of time teaching me all I needed to know during my open dives going in detail over each component. She even did a session in the pool before my open water dive to ensure I learned what I needed on my pool sessions before we went out. I couldn't recommend them more. If you're in the area and are thinking of scuba diving, these guys will find a way to make it happen. read more

I haven't actually been in the dive shop, but am writing about the Oregon Coast Aquarium dive in Newport that this business guides. I'm accustomed to shore diving on the Oregon coast where I grew up (real shore diving, not jetty diving), but it's rare to find good shore diving conditions, and even good conditions are usually very demanding (as in unpleasant and dangerous for a lot of folks). Also, we live in an inland state now, so the chances of having good shore diving conditions on any given vacation to Oregon are low. So that created a problem when wanting to take my wife and kids diving in Oregon. Then we learned about the aquarium dive. Inasmuch as it's in the aquarium and the dive itself is therefore indoors, water conditions are always fine, albeit cold (note that getting out of a wetsuit afterward can be chilly if the weather outside is bad). Moreover, these folks help carry your gear, help you every step of the way, and if you need it they give you one on one attention in the water to help with weight, buoyancy, etc. Good heavens, they even put your BCD on you after you sit down on the edge of the catwalk, and they take your fins off when you kneel on a platform at the end! So it was a good experience for us, since it made it feasible for my family's less experienced divers to do something pretty interesting. Where else are you going to have a sturgeon vacuum your fingers? The dive shop's staff were exceptionally attentive and helpful. They are what makes this dive as good as it is. read more
