If you rent a car from this place you should know that at the time of turning the vehicle in you go through an inspection and they will charge you for things you didn't do to the car. Cost me almost $9000 pesos for a bumper that showed evidence of melting. For whatever reasons. read more

Won't finish this review until the rental experience is complete... Not sure why these folks have such low reviews!! We rented for a week and half with an extension for that half... we were able to extend on the phone (needed to visit for the Belizean form), each visit was pretty short and they made sure we were prepared to go back and forth to Belize. All and all these folks did good by us and keep us moving. As the only rental company that allows for border crossing with the rental, I would pick them even with options!! read more

This past summer I rented a car from Europcar. When i picked up the car at Rome airport i noticed a scratch on the hood that I indicated to the attendant. He marked the car diagram where the damage was and initialed. Three months after I got back to the US my credit card is charged roughly $250 by Europcar. When I contacted them to find out why they produced a a letter that they claimed they sent me with two pictures of a tiny scratch on the bumper but an invoice of repair done to the hood. When I challenged the charge they wouldn't explain why they charged for the hood and sent me pictures of the bumper. They wouldn't refund the fraudulent charge. They're crooks! Don't rent a car from this company. Once they take your credit card they charge whatever they want. I have never been ripped off so unjustly. They are really BAD read more

Reservation for my rental was $365. They would not let me rent the car without CDW insurance even though I have this coverage on my credit card and told them this repeatedly. After over an hour in line it was leave or be extorted and pay $928 for the rental the most ridiculous overcharge I have ever seen on insurance! The insurance charge for just CDW almost double the cost of the rental. What a scam! read more

We reserved a car in Chetumal, Mexico online. We received a confirmation code and even gave our credit card number to "guarantee" the rental. When we arrived to pick up our car they said there were no cars left- and in fact, if we had made the reservation within the last 30 days, there would have been no cars as they had sold out long ago. The poor young sales people at the counter had a long line of very irate people and said that the Europcar online booking didn't actually have a way to communicate with the local office. We were, as they say, up the creek, without a paddle! read more

Stay Away from these freaks, they stink and are a mafia. What a bad experience!! When i went to pick up the car, Jesus Ponzo stated that I needed 10000 US dollars to waive the CDW. Astonished, I told him no body in the past have asked more than 1200 US Dollars. Then he advised me to buy the CDW offered by Europcar for 25 US dollars a day to avoid all this. I explained to him that I wanted to take advantage of the benefit that my credit card offers that I Had. I have printed an official letter from Amex with my name and card number to assure that my Amex card will cover. HE looked at the letter and then stated that I must present the CNSF letter. I asked him where could I get it from. He said that there is a form online if I logged into their site. I asked politely if I could use one of their unoccupied computers in the office, and he was redundant to tell me to go back to the airport to use an Internet cyber to fill and print the form. I told him that my wife was pregnant and exhausted from the trip, but he insisted that I go back to the airport or I purchase the CDW from him. I couldn't believe that I was going through this, I rented from more than 15 companies in the past abroad and I never saw poor quality customer service and work ethics. Then I spoke with Lino Fernandez who I thought will be of more help, but instead he refused to accept the letter from Amex because 1- It does not specifically state Coverage of CDW in Mexico. 2- It doesn't have the email address of the person who issued the letter. So now, I am missing 2 requirements to waive the CDW insted of 1. I literally spent 3 hours between going back to the airport trying to fill the CNSF form that I never found, and incurring roaming charges on my phone while trying to get help from Amex car rental services. The Amex representative willingly stated that she could change the letter with her name, number and email address and agreed to type " coverage of CDW in Mexico", she asked me to talk to Mr. Fernandez so that she can explain, but when he spoke to her, he bluntly refused to accept this letter and told her that I must buy the CDW insurance although he could not supplement her with information on how she could obtain the CNSF form. This experience was dramatic and disappointing for me and my wife. We went through all this aggravation and inconvenience for nothing, and now I am reaching out Europcar corporate office to conduct an investigation and supply a valid explanation of their staff actions. read more

They kept us waiting for 2 hours after our reservation time, eventually shuttled us to a different location and then told us we had to pay an extra $150 (US) for a 2-day hire. They refused to rent us the car without buying their own insurance, despite the fact that I am already covered. We didn't give into their scam, but they wasted a lot of our time. read more

Never rent a car from them. 1. Called to confirm reservation. Waited on hold for 20 minutes then the system hung up. I then emailed them to get confirmation. Again, never heard from them. I had reserved a 13:00 pick up time from Cancun airport. Man at counter could not get through to the main store as well. I called again, on hold again... system hung up. I called the Spanish extension. I got through after 10 minutes waiting. Said they would pick us up in 10 minutes. 14:00 rolls around and we are still waiting in the rain. I called the Spanish extension again. Said they should be there soon. This was literally a .4 mile drive to pick us up. If it wasn't raining, we would have wandered and walked. 2. Finally got to store. Of course my proof of collision insurance wasn't good enough. $369 MORE later, we get paperwork completed. 3. Told to go to the next desk. This was to get a map and to up-sell us on excursions. Later found out from our concierge, that it was a scam. Glad I said No. 4. After more delaying and finally got our car. NOT the one I was quoted. This one was a Spark and we had to push our luggage in. Not happy.. Not a way to start off a vacation. I should have cancelled before arriving. read more

Really dissatisfied with the rental this time. When we booked online you never disclosed that we need to take insurance. I kept telling the staff at the europcar office at the Cancun airport that my credit card includes international coverage (which I used a while ago in Germany with another europcar rental as well) and I don't need coverage. They declined giving me a car unless I purchased insurance which btw was 2 times the price of the rental! I was forced into buying insurance which is completely unethical. Next there is no one who speaks English at your counter. The service is extremely slow. They scan every document which takes foreber. It took us nearly 2 hours to get a car!! At speeds over 90, the radio antenna would wobble and keep banging the top of the car. When I returned, all contracts were in Spanish!! How the hell can anyone figure what they were charged. They even kept a $500 deposit which you never told they would at the time of booking. I still can't tell looking at the contract if I was refunded my deposit. In a nutshell, really bad experience!! read more

I have always loved traveling to Cancun, but for those planning to rent a car here I have a cautionary tale. I arrived at the Cancun airport location of Europcar with my quote for $254 in hand for a 14 day rental, and my letter of CDW coverage from Mastercard, backed by AIG - one of the largest insurance companies in North America. When I make it through the line to an agent, he shows me the insurance offerings on the car, the cheapest of which was about $700 for my $254 rental. But no worries because I have my CDW letter and don't need to buy their overpriced policies. So the agent takes my letter, and reviews it against a list of "acceptable" CDW. Lo and behold, my insurance (PART OF MASTERCARD'S global coverage) isn't on the approved list. So I am told, I can't rent the car without paying an additional $700 for insurance for CDW which was not listed as being mandatory on my quote. After a loud discussion and my returning to the Europcar van demanding a ride back to the airport, a manager approaches me and states that I can rent the car without the CDW if I place a deposit for the entire value of the car ($13K USD), and pay an additional $105 as a fee for declining the insurance. Mind you my quote for $254 was without any insurance coverage, so it is unclear to me why the penalty fee was not included in my quote. Seems like a dishonest way to do business all the way around. But without other good options, and fortunately having a sufficient credit line I agreed to pay this extra ransom as opposed to being a stuck at the Europcar location (our destination was a 4 hour drive away) without any transportation. So they send me off to the car, a beat up Chevy Aveo with lots of dents, no cruise control, no Bluetooth, but OK. We used the car for two weeks without issue. Then came the return to the Europcar location. The Europcar representative spent an inordinate amount of time on the car and was messing with the trunk. After about 20 minutes, I approached him to find out what the hell was going on. Europcar claims that there is a broken trunk lock and a stolen spare tire. I absolutely deny that the trunk lock was broken at the time I returned the vehicle. We had the vehicle for two weeks and made several stops throughout the Yucatan peninsula. We frequently used the trunk, and the lock was never an issue - including driving back to the Europcar location with our possessions in the trunk, successfully opening the trunk, and removing our items - which would not have been in the trunk if we were having trouble with the lock. As to the stolen spare tire, I can attest that the tire compartment is hidden below the trunk. There was no walk through beforehand to show me a spare was present in that compartment. There was no request from Europcar for me to open the compartment and verify a tire was present. I can also verify that due to the cold weather at home, but warm weather in Mexico - we had coats which remained in the trunk for our entire trip. And we often had other items in the trunk. None of these were ever disturbed. The interior of the car was never disturbed. For Europcar's claim to be true, the thief would have had to bypass the tires easily available on the exterior of the car, break into the trunk without knowing if anything was in it, remove my items, steal the tire (but none of my items), then neatly replace the cover and return my items back to their place in the trunk. All of this without bothering to break into the interior of the car to check the interior or glove box for any valuables. I told the Europcar rep that he was full of crap and explained our situation and refused to sign a statement of responsibility for the "damage". They then refused to transport us back to the airport because I wouldn't agree. If you don't believe that it is possible that someone broke into the car under the above circumstances. This leads you to one of two possible conclusions: 1) This was an honest mistake where Europcar sincerely believes that a spare tire was present, and the trunk lock just happened to break between the time I handed the keys over and the Europcar rep inspected the car. 2) Or did Europcar set me up knowing that I did not have the insurance through them, and figure that I would not know to open the hidden compartment in the trunk and have photo evidence that no spare was present? Did they intentionally compromise my safety by sending me out in a car with no spare tire, then again compromise my safety by refusing to give me transportation back to the airport? We mapped the walk to our terminal, which was noted as a 17 minute walk down an airport road while lugging bags. So what should it cost for to repair a trunk lock and replace a spare tire on a beat up Chevy Aveo? In Mexico? With no approval from me Europcar billed my credit card $870.85. After letters to Europcar's customer service and contesting this charge with my credit card company I'm still fighting this. read more
Europcar got me the car that I needed and I had no problems with it. In fact we drove the Chevy quite a bit over the 4 day period, including poorly maintained and dirt roads, and it held up really well. The car was pretty new too. No complaints there. The prices they were asking however were outrageous. In the end, I booked online through Holiday Autos. I was a little worried at first when booking because I'd never heard of the company before, but in the end it turned out to be completely legitimate. I spent $200 less than I would have if I had booked directly through Europcar. This however is a problem with Europcar corporate, not the local spot in Chetumal. The only issue I took with Chetumal is that they charged me for showing up early!? It was only 30 pesos, but if anything, they should be giving me a 30 peso reward for being early. There was no way I could have known this charge would have come about. I felt that this may have been a tiny shakedown that would go under the radar. Who knows...? It was a frustrating way to end an otherwise good experience with Europcar. read more
