In July 2021, I went to see Qia (Andy) Zhang at one of their hospital locations in Burlingame for a regular annual physical exam. I am a healthy individual going in just for a check up. My health insurance is one of the premium levels of insurance provided by Apple. Between my husband and me, we pay ~$300 per month for this premium health insurance. Since August, I received multiple bills from Sutter Health charging me excess of $300 dollars for various tests that I had no clue were administered. After multiple calls to both the billing department and UHC, I found out that I was tested for a variety of things including rubella antibodies and more. They were all coded as "preventative - general adult medical examination without abnormal findings" but in speaking with doctor friends, these are generally not needed in a normal, healthy adult's annual check up. Even if the doctor did want to test something special, he should have disclosed it and coded it appropriately. If you are a doctor, you can let me know. I tried calling Qia Zhang to find out more. I never received any call back. The billing department was worse. I talked to multiple people who outrightly blamed me for getting charged. Saying that it's my responsibility to know what I need to be tested for and exactly which tests are covered under my insurance. To be clear, the doctor did no disclose to me anything about what he was going to test me for. I also never received any results from any test. Another billing rep said that if it was just a regular physical, I should not have disclosed any discomfort to the doctor which could have triggered the doctor to run extra tests. The only thing I told Qia Zhang was that my stomach was feeling funny for a couple months back but now I was fine. This is not my first, second, or third annual check up. I am 30+ now and have done enough annuals but I have never been told that I shouldn't disclose to the doctor if there is anything wrong with me at an annual exam. I have never experienced a bill for an annual even when I had much worse insurance at other companies. In sharing my story with other Apple employees, we found out that many people have had similar experiences with Sutter Health, one of whom was charged over $1200 just for an annual exam. Right now, we are at a limbo where UHC says it's Sutter Health's issue and vice versa and I'm in the middle stuck with a large bill. It really is not the money at this point, it's the principal of the matter. My husband and I are lucky enough to have full time jobs during this pandemic. What if this large bill landed on someone who was less fortunate? Everyone, please be careful when you go to the doctor's, especially Sutter Health. We have since heard too many horror stories about their tactics. It is really sad that the medical and insurance system cannot be trusted.

A Doctor Who Truly Cares About Her Patients I came to know…read moreDr. Ling through my husband. At the time, I wasn't having a good experience with my previous doctor's office, so my husband suggested that I ask to see Dr. Ling. I'm very grateful that Dr. Ling was willing to accept me as a patient. From my experience, Dr. Ling truly cares about the individual health of each of her patients. She doesn't just treat a test result or prescribe medication and send you on your way. She takes the time to understand the issue, orders the appropriate tests, reviews the results, and develops a plan to address the problem. One example is my blood pressure. It had been difficult to control, and several doctors had tried different medications. Some of the medications caused unpleasant side effects. Dr. Ling patiently worked with me, trying different medications and combinations until we found an approach that works. Today, my blood pressure is under control and, importantly, I'm not experiencing the side effects I had before. Another example is my bone health. I needed treatment that involved injections, but I really don't like shots and was also concerned about the cost. Instead of simply telling me that injections were my only option, Dr. Ling was willing to discuss a pill alternative and let me try it. If it works for me, it could save me both the inconvenience of injections and a significant amount of money. I really appreciate that she considers both my health and my concerns. Recently, I also needed a special lab test because of a hereditary health issue in my family that could potentially affect me. I brought the request to the office, and they were able to schedule me for an appointment the very next day. When I arrived, I waited less than 10 minutes, and Dr. Ling reviewed the request and signed the lab order right away. The office staff are also very thoughtful--they routinely ask whether I need any medication refills when I'm there. The office staff are friendly, helpful, and responsive as well. One time, my husband and I discovered that our online pharmacy had significantly increased the price of one of our medications. We asked the office to change the pharmacy, and they took care of it right away so I could get my refill the same day. They even allowed me to keep one particular medication at a different pharmacy because it was much less expensive there. Overall, my husband and I have had a wonderful experience with Dr. Ling and her staff. What stands out most is that we feel like real patients, not just numbers. Even though the office is busy, we never feel like Dr. Ling is simply trying to rush us out the door. She listens to our concerns and genuinely wants to find solutions that work for us. With all the stories we hear these days about how difficult it can be to find a good primary care doctor, we feel very fortunate to have Dr. Ling as our PCP. She was patient with her exam but unfortunately, all she did was to suggest to monitor my symptoms by downloading a generic wellness phone app. This was one of the worst diagnoses I have received from any doctor. The next day, I made an appointment outside One Medical with someone who could provide more helpful medical advice. On top of this, I received $$$ bill from One Medical. When I called their billing department to check on the bill, they thought I was calling to negotiate and they automatically reduced it in half. I complained to my employer who had to follow up with One Medical to sort out the coverage. Such a hassle, avoid and go to a real clinic and a real doctor.

I needed a referral to a specialist, and she connected me with a wonderful one in my area. The app listed a restriction for September 19th only. I arrived promptly at 8am. I was greeted by a nice person at the front desk. She unfortunately told me that I could not get my vaccine at this time. She stated that it was because there was no physician in the office and that their lab is limited to just blood work and the basic flu shot. She proceeded to tell me that a doctor will be in at 0830 if I wanted to wait or come back. I decided to come back at 0830 and run a few errands in downtown Burlingame/ wait in the car. I came back at 0830 and a provider was in house. I checked in and was able to get my shot. It took about 10 minutes from checking in to getting the shot to leaving the facility. The same person in reception helped me and she was very nice about it. I just wished the times and restrictions were more up to date.
