This place is a Bay Area institution, slinging barbecue since the '70s, and the whole pitch is that you don't need to fly south to get the real thing. Came with a friend to put that to the test. My verdict: it fills a need, but it doesn't hold up to what you'd get in the actual South. The food was decent. Nothing offensive, but nothing that jumped out and grabbed me either. I order delivery through the Uber app. This was our first time eating from this restaurant. I ordered the four-way combo & 2 orders of Biscoff banana pudding. Unfortunately, the banana pudding was not delivered. I did request a refund through the Uber app regarding the banana pudding's missing from the order. As for the four-way combo. The meats order was the ribs, brisket , link, and the burnt ends. Unfortunately, the combo did not have any burnt ends, instead it seemed like extra ribs. As for the sides with the combo, we did ordered the mac & cheese and the potato salad. The mac & cheese was slightly different than other mac & cheese, I've had from other places. It seemed to have a little bit of different spices in it, a strong garlic and paprika taste. As for the potato salad, at first, I wasn't sure if it was potato salad or mashed potatoes. Unfortunately, the potato salad did not taste or seem at all like potato salad to me. They pour the barbecue sauce on top of all the meat. The only problem with that, is by the time we got the bag it was soaking wet at the bottom with the barbecue sauce that had spilled out of the container. Ever since Ms. Mary, the owner of Everett and Jones passed away, Sorry to say - you never know what to expect in terms of food quality from E&J these days. I happened to be in the bay near university right around the time the store opened and since they are my favorite bbq spot, decided to give them another try. I'm so glad I did. Got a 3 way with ribs, sliced beef and links with sides of potato salad and baked beans for $46.00. Again, so glad I went. Everything was delicious! The meat was cooked to perfection and tender. The sliced beef had pieces of garlic cooked into it. So good! The beans were a little too sweet for my liking and the potato salad was basic potato salad made to satisfy many different palates so it was just ok. But the star of the show was the meat and it didn't disappoint. Everything was hot and fresh. The bbq sauce was hot and there was plenty of it on the meat. One change I noticed was the walk up window. No longer are you able to walk inside the building. All orders are taken at one window and picked up at a different window. The guy taking my order was nice and friendly. He smiled a lot, told me that I Clearly hadn't been there for a few months when I commented on the new walk up window. When I mentioned I live out of town, he thanked me For stopping by on my visit to the bay. I placed my order through DoorDash. I ordered a 3-meat combo plate with two sides. Had I known the food was coming from the Berkeley location, I would not have placed the order. I assumed it was coming from the Jack London Square location, which has been better in my experience. The mac and cheese was overcooked and lacked seasoning. The green beans were okay. The sausage links were fine. Unfortunately, the brisket was dry and overcooked, and the ribs were tough and mostly fat with very little meat. E&J's is always gonna hit the spot when I start craving BBQ in the spring-summer season. The staff are nice and work quickly, they are attentive with taking the order which I love. As you wait, you can look at photos from the past and view commemorative tributes to family and friends of the business, which I like. Order placed, food packaged, craving satisfied. I'm an easy-going guy so I just get 3-pc of ribs with double potato salad. I've only ever been to the Berkeley location due to its ease in access and parking availability, I've not tried the Oakland location, so I might need to swing by over there too. I remember going to Everett & Jones as a kid, when my grandparents lived off University Ave in Berkeley. I've always had fond memories of this place and my family happened to be driving through the area, on our way home. So of course we had to stop in. The exterior looked like it had been painted but as far as I can recall, it seemed exactly the same. They have stickers covering the wall with snarky sayings. We ordered 2 two meat plates with brisket & ribs and brisket & hot link. We also got another 3 meat plate with brisket, ribs and hot link. I think it came out to around $130, but honestly it was one of those places where we didn't even think about price.' Service was good and fast, considering there were only 2 people working. It smelled so amazing in there. The bbq was tender and so delicious, the sauce is so different to any other sauce I've had. There's a smokiness that is hard to replicate. So sad it's so far away. This is tried and true BBQ; the kind where the sauce gets everywhere and you want to lick it off your fingers. E&J get five stars for consistently delivering no-frills, delicious BBQ. I am a fan of the brisket and the chicken with potato salad. The brisket is always tender and falling apart and the chicken is juicy. The texture of the potato salad can vary from being sorta mashed to being chunky, but the flavor is spot on to what I used to get on the Southside of Chicago. Do I miss the $12 combo plate from 20 years ago? Of course! But pretty much everything is 4x what it was, and E&J are still here when other places are long gone. No indoor dining; there's barely enough room for the staff, the counter, and the people lined up to order. I strongly advise that you know what you want before the guy who looks like Reggie White (look him up, young 'uns) takes your order. There are tables directly outside if you want to eat there, but there's no view to speak of except the traffic going by. I have always received service with a smile. Ended up having to share what they did deliver with my husband. Luckily, we weren't super hungry. I don't think the driver stole it either as the food was double bagged and stapled. - Food was cold. Doesn't always surprise me though with UberEats. Just a risk you take with random people picking food up and making multiple stops. - Food was "meh". Beans had way too much sugar. Mac and Cheese could have used more cheese. Brisket was a little fatty and swimming in sauce like a soup. Maybe it was just a rough night. Won't be ordering again. Wow...Everett & Jone's has really fallen off. I grew up eating this bbq and it WAS the best. I visited E&J about 3 weeks ago and the food was good. I had links, ribs and brisket. Potato salad was decent. It was good, I even went again about a week later. It was horrible. Ribs and brisket were tough. BBQ sauce was runny and tasteless. Potato salad had absolutely no flavor. It had no mayo or seasoning. My father had the same experience when he went Saturday. He said he will never go again. I spent almost $100 (two meals) and it wasn't worth it! Today we have 2 sides combos: Sauce seems still taste the same, bean absolutely horrible, it seems not done cooking, taste too sweet that about it, not taste the same any more and it not for better.
