Always a lovely selection of brews here. Honestly, they don't seem to make good IPAs here, but I do enjoy their fruity and sour beers very much. They had a lot of new brews this visit so ended up getting a sampler to try out the new beers. It's a small location so it can get pretty crowded, especially on the weekends, but well worth it for fruity and sour beers.

This brewery is tucked away in a really cute and safe part of Berkeley, with plenty of street parking available on a Sunday--super convenient. The beers were above average, though I wish they had more sour options. A nice bonus is that a select few of their beers are on happy hour all day Sunday at just $5 a pint, which is such a great deal. Service was excellent. Our beertender came over to check on us, offered tasters, and even shared recommendations for other breweries in the area and in Seattle, where he's from. Really appreciated the personal touch. I was a bit surprised it wasn't busier for a Sunday, but it made for a relaxed atmosphere. All in all, a solid spot to enjoy some good beers and chill out.

I love smoothie beers and was so thrilled to find a yummy one here! The place is on the smaller side, but a great place to grab a drink with some friends!

Their smoothie style ales are so delicious! Perfect blend of lightly sweet with just the right level of tart that my partner, who finds sours to be too tart, and I (a sour beer lover) both enjoy. Today we had the POG (passionfruit, orange, guava) and the Monkey (lime sherbet, banana, pineapple, mango). We also like their dark beers, like BBA French Toast stout. Staff were friendly and knowledgeable and I liked being there in the relaxed ambiance on a quiet Saturday afternoon.

Probably the most uncomfortable and worst bar experience I have ever had. I'll start off and say that I'm a bartender myself and would never treat guests how the bartender did. My friends and I met this girl who was a local. The next day she suggested we checkout this brewery that's in her area because we love beer. We arrived. Grabbed a beer. The girl then walked inside, sat down, and we were casually chatting for maybe 2 minutes when the bartender told us that we all had to leave and that we are not welcome. There was maybe one other person in the bar during the daytime so we were confused. Turns out it was some personal issue the bartender had against the girl. Which is none of my business and I shouldn't be kicked out of a bar after I paid for my drinks, tipped the bartender, and was just sitting there. I literally had to chug my beer and leave. At the minimum, which is still uncomfortable, tell the girl to leave. Not us. Based on the unprofessionalism and rudeness, I would not recommend this bar.

Great Notion Brewery is one of the best around with there amazing stouts and fun tart ales the beer itself is amazing. The service was fast and to the point and the inside of the place is clean with a huge beer fridge stacked with delicious brews. I will be back.

Great taproom in west Berkeley, in the former Sierra Nevada space. First visit with the new proprietor, so had to get a flight. Everything was solid, and would visit again, but I can't remember any of the names of the beers, if that tells you anything. Rotating food vendors pop up here, but not sure if all days or just some.

Dominic and Ian have their hands full. It busy in this upscale neighborhood. This is the place to be. Great beer, food out the back door in the patio, and a clean comfortable interior. The tunes were a nice added bonus. Enjoy people watching or take a selfie with Sasquatch (you need to see to understand this) LOL. I ordered a colorful tasty flight and a Blackberry Cream Soda for my wife. There are wonderful options to non-alcoholic drinks here, Also, I see children, and pets. How cool is that? Then I set out my pic of my 2 buddies lost in war for this Memorial Day. I remember them on Veterans day too. Heroes all. Its a tradition with me. I always spill a little for the guys and remember them in story. Ian and Dominic were very understanding and totally supported this. I am a Vietnam Vet, Sgt USAF so their sacrifice is real. TY gentleman. This is why the community embraces this place. Like an English Pub, this serves the locals like an extension of their Livingroom. I recommend it. Parking around the side, great and safe place to bring a date, and the locals are friendly. See you soon That Strawberry Ale caught me off guard. Delish guys.

Fruity brews, lazy Sunday afternoon, and fries (from Asian hot dog truck in front)...nice way to end a weekend! Dog friendly patio is a plus!

Great Notion makes great beer. This satellite shop has a good selection of GN's beers and merch. The service is very good, although not the warm and fuzzy vibe that I had experienced at the Mother Ship in Portland.

Stumbled into Great Notion in Berkeley and instantly loved the vibe -- colorful, laid-back, and just a fun spot to hang. The beer lineup is wild in the best way -- hazy IPAs, fruity sours, pastry stouts... they're not afraid to get weird, and it works. Tried a flight and every pour was a surprise in a good way. Bonus points for the staff being super cool and happy to chat about the beers without any beer-snob energy. If you like your craft beer with personality and want a chill place to sip and vibe, this is it.

This is probably my favorite brewery in East Bay to go to after finding out about it at a Yelp Elite event. They have so many fun options, especially if you enjoy sours. I also randomly came here on a Tuesday night and learned that they host Trivia Tuesday as a fun option! I got a 5 x 5 oz flight ($19) with Passionfruit Mochi IPA, Blueberry Muffin Sour, Fruit Monster Sour, Vanillazilla, and Strawberry & Kiwi Seltzer. My favorites were the blueberry muffin sour (it actually tastes like blueberry muffin!) and the vanillazilla. They were out of the Big Papaya sour, so that will definitely be on my order when I go next time!

I love a popular out of town brewery make the Bay a home. Portland's Great Notion is here to stay, and they're a winner. PARKING Pro Tip: They're actually located pretty close from the walkway from Cesar Chavez Park, so a good idea could be to park there and walk over to save yourself some trouble with street or paid parking. I think most people who were enjoying brews in the store were local, so they didn't have to deal with parking. It's a great cozy unassuming spot for groups, dates, or catching up on some work. They have strong wifi, clean restrooms, and are dog-friendly. I love that they have treats too for doggos. They do offer flights, and y'all know I had to go for a flight of their IPA's and some of their delicious fruited sours. I gotta say, it's a rare thing when I like all of my tasters, but in this case Great Notion definitely delivered. Their sours were accurately named, all of their beers are! So props to the team that does that. My faves were def: POG IPA (so juicy), Seedless Watermelon (perf for a hot sunny day), and Ripe IPA (so tasty). The Blueberry Muffin Sour was indeed, just like it's namesake, not my cup of tea but accurately named. Synesthesia was also the taptender's rec as it is a popular IPA, I can see why. I enjoyed my time there on my weekday off, although music choice was interesting...the entire Taylor Swift album. And it was off-putting that there were a bunch of flies buzzing around the large tables. Regardless, they have a fantastic to-go selection. It's insanely beautiful, but they have SO many 4-packs and canned goodies for those who are interested in taking some brews to go, or if you particularly love any of the beers you've had while visiting. Saw lots of people come through just for their pickup orders.

    You're almost there.

The first time I went to Cellarmaker I was post-ride -- the particular kind of hungry and…read moredehydrated that makes any beer taste like the best beer you've ever had, which is why I don't fully trust that first impression. But the West Coast IPA was good, genuinely good, and the pizzas coming out of the kitchen to the tables around me looked like pizzas made by people who cared about pizza, and the outdoor area was the kind of setup that welcomes bikes and dogs without making a production of it. I made a mental note: come back sometime for food. "Sometime" turned out to be yesterday, which is how it always works, the places you mean to return to in a week take three months, and the ones you expect to take three months surprise you on a random afternoon when you're starving and nearby and out of excuses. We'd taken the dogs on a long hike through Reinhardt Redwood Regional Park, which if you haven't done it is one of those East Bay hikes that makes you briefly forget you live in an urban area -- redwoods and eucalyptus and creek crossings and the kind of quiet that resets whatever the week did to you. By the end of it we were the specific kind of famished where menu deliberation is impossible and you just point at things and hope. We sat outside and pointed at things and everything we pointed at was excellent. The baked sweet potato--a Japanese sweet potato under miso butter, chili crème fraîche, bacon bits, crispy onions, scallions, and pea tendrils--is the kind of dish that sounds like it was assembled by a committee of trendy adjectives but actually works as a coherent thing you want to eat. The miso butter does the heavy lifting, that sweet-savory bridge that makes Japanese sweet potatoes sing, and the chili crème fraîche keeps it from tipping into cloying territory. Fifteen dollars for a side dish at a brewery is a number that would normally make me flinch, but the portion was generous and the execution was real. The summer squash tostadas--roasted zucchini, cherry tomatoes, avocado, pickled red onion, salsa macha, queso fresco, cilantro--were bright and crunchy and exactly the kind of thing you want after four hours in the woods. The salsa macha brought a nutty, smoky heat that elevated what could have been a forgettable veggie tostada into something I'd actually order again on purpose. And then there were the pickled vegetables. Cauliflower, fennel, zucchini, carrots. Seven dollars. Who pickles zucchini? Cellarmaker pickles zucchini, and it's delicious, and I'm annoyed that I now have to rethink my entire understanding of what belongs in a pickle jar. I had the Diamonds & Gasoline, a West Coast IPA with Nelson Sauvin and Cascade Cryo hops. The menu copy promises white wine and gooseberry and diesel-y grapefruit funk. What I'd tell you is that it's dank. Good dank. The kind of resinous, piney, vaguely illicit West Coast IPA that California does better than anywhere and that Northern California in particular has turned into a regional art form. I drank it and thought about the fact that I've started using the word "dank" to describe beer unironically and that I voluntarily hiked through redwoods on a Sunday afternoon and that I'm sitting outside a brewery in Berkeley with two dogs at my feet eating a Japanese sweet potato with miso butter on it. I am becoming a Northern Californian. This is happening. I lament nothing. The pizza will have to wait for the third visit. Wednesday, maybe -- they do a $12 slice-and-beer special that sounds like exactly the kind of deal that accelerates the conversion.

We ordered fries and a veggie plate to start and the fries that showed up were covered in paprika and soggy like they were baked. Extreme premium prices for beyond mediocre food. The hummus was laughable and ranch was awwwful. We ordered a following round of food with chicken strips, a burger and more fries. This time the fries were completely different. They were deep-fried and crunchy (definitely came from a bag) but a completely different french fry from what we received on our first order. Still the same foul Ranch and the ketchup that was out in squeeze bottles was beyond disgusting it was thin, sour and bright red with tin flavor. Chicken strips were fine, they 100% came from a bag and were consistent with hundreds of other restaurants that purchase the same ones. We asked the server if we could have our burger cut in half and they snapped that they were too busy to do that. The people next to us and across from us had burgers that were split in half... And the burger was a complete joke. Their "special sauce" is just cheap mayonnaise mixed with some of that cheap ketchup (that is probably from a huge can from the top corporate food distributor.) People listing that this is one of their favorite burgers are really missing out on some experiences in life, or they're eating them after their third double IPA... It's a beautiful place, great yard area. But the food needs to open a new document and start again. I can't believe how much it cost for how horrible it was. I'm in shock.

I had a friend visiting Berkeley from out of town so we came here to hang out and catch up. One thing that stood out to me is this place, because it's a taproom and not a brewery, is open later than the other beer places in the East Bay. Many choices of beer and cider on tap. I tried the ginger peppercorn cider and it was very unique, I've never had a cider like this flavor, it's almost like a cross between ginger beer and cider. My friends enjoyed various beers on tap. This review is for the upstairs deck - food was decent, had a Racer NA IPA, which was perfectly ok…read more The deck was very comfortable for outdoor seating, but loud - but not remotely as loud as the main area downstairs, which was mobbed with soccer fans. Ordering via QR code and getting the food was easy. Fries were ok, I tried the Brussels sprouts, they were also ok. Prices are very reasonable for the serving sizes. I had the slider special, which came with three sliders: one smash burger, one impossible burger (I think?) and one fried chicken slider. A word of warning - the fried chicken sandwich is SPICY. Too hot for me, and I wasn't expecting that.

They get a 5 for service & experience (food is good with beers/can't complain!)…read more Came here twice this week as we were attending concerts at the greek. Two suggestions to maximize your experience: 1- if you can come any day and are here at 5:10 pm, make sure you have a couple dimes for a special daily happy hour (iykyk) 2- if you can get here on a thursday nite (we did) make sure you order. A Monkeyhead to share (or enjoy solo assuming you can walk/take bart/or uber) - finally!! Food is reasonably priced and yummy with beers. Recommend the nachos as they come or smash burgers....pairs well with beers. And staff is very attentive as this bar has tons of regulars that are NOT students!

My after work watering hole, and sometimes during work nudge nudge, wink wink say no more!…read moreGreat selection of tap beers and a full bar. Decent food menu, even have a decent veggie burger. They've got some nice veggie appetizers, cauliflower, fake chicken tender thingies, and a nice pretzel. Probably the best pretzel I've ever had. Pay the little extra for the cheese dip. Me likes the cheese bites. And I love the shishito peppers. Lotsa interesting folks come up in here, and there's some daily regulars, a real mixed bag , fun people. I met a couple people that turned out to be my good friends for the last few years. Attached is a concert hall that has some pretty interesting live music acts and very diverse from hip hop to jazz to funk to rock and roll and that dark sider stuff, heavy metal, etc. They rent the whole joint out if you have a party or they rent sections as well. Great spot for wedding rehearsal dinners, high school reunions, company parties, etc. Stimulating conversation abounds and a lot of laughter bouncing off the walls. A great place to see sporting events, especially the Warriors. Very nice patio as well with big umbrellas and fire pit. There is an odd set up as you have to go to the bar to get your drinks each time you want something. The downside could be long lines as they don't have table service but they bring you stuff. They don't take orders from the table. Some kind of crowd control thing? Or mis management or local rules? At any rate, it is a fun hang out with killer bartenders and servers. Great spot, get over here and enjoy yourself! Time to leave your crib, get off the sofa, turn off Netflix. And remember, social media is not! Let's go, get out and make Berkeley great again! Tip well the service is great!

I was an insane person and went to go see 4 concerts in 1 week, all at different venues and I have…read moreto say that this one is my favorite. I went to see the visual kei, Japanese rock band, JILUKA, here with my boyfriend and we lined up beforehand for VIP. The staff walked out, showed us the rules for the VIP that was printed on a piece of paper and explained it to us too, they walked down the line to scan us in as well. Venue itself is pretty neat. The front part is a bar area with lots of tables and seating and outdoor seating as well. Since it was before the concert, we were able to enjoy some food and drinks from the bar and kitchen. It was also during their Happy Hour too which was great. My boyfriend got a drink (not sure what it was, but it was refreshing and citrus tasting?) and we shared a Bavarian soft pretzel with mustard and we got the white cheddar dipping sauce added on for a nominal fee. One of the best pretzels that I've ever had! Deliciously soft interior, nice chew to the texture of the exterior. Comes out hot, warm and delicious. Great on it's own, but great with the sauces too. Perfect dash of the coarse salts on it. I'd get this again for sure and would like to one day order more from their menu. The live house music area is in the back in a separate room. Restrooms were clean too. Enough space for the bands to sell their merch and do a meet and greet. Wasn't a huge venue and insane turn out, but it fit the crowd and I liked how intimate setting was. I was around 3-4 rows from the front and even with a mosh pit and wall of death, I was able to shift around and see the band more clearly. Easy visibility no matter where I was shifted around. Lighting was pretty good and made it easy to take pictures and video. I think the vocals were a bit more muffled than the rest of the band members playing, but that might just be the set up more than anything. Of all the venues I stopped by for the week, this had the most approachable and friendly staff. Greeted going and as we were leaving too. I didn't overheat at this one either, so the AC was A+!! There's paid parking nearby but if you read the signs and go around, you can get free street parking too. Bring more J-rock/over seas acts here, it was so good!
