I visited Dodona Manor (also called the George C. Marshall International Center) this past Friday when I was in Leesburg, and I'm so glad I made time to stop by. They offer tours Friday through Sunday, and you should check the online schedule, because the hours vary depending on the day. I was the only person on the 1pm tour last Friday, so I got a private tour from Kerry, a guide at Dodona. The tours are 75 minutes (which includes a short video that provides some context for the rest of the tour), and I learned a lot. I knew the name, but I didn't remember much of what I'd learned about Marshall in school. Kerry was a great guide, and I really learned so much about Marshall's accomplishments, his life, and the house (where Marshall and his second wife lived from 1941-1959). The house has been beautifully restored to the way it looked when the Marshalls lived there, and much of the furniture and collections are original (Marshall's actual possessions, photographs, books, etc.). If you're interested in American history, include Dodona Manor on your itinerary for a visit to Leesburg!

I think this is a four star or four and a half (you can't give "halves"). It's steeped in very…read moreinteresting history. The park ranger was awesome (09/05/25) and knew everything about her. You got a real sense of what kind of person she was, how she was not perfect like people think but how she truly believed in what she did and she lived it literally, making her home a place to take in fire/flood and natural disaster victims/war victims. She truly did care and it weighed on her. The house itself is huge. However at this time, the furnishing are mostly in storage as they are awaiting rehab on the building. You can't go upstairs. If it'd of been rehabbed and all moved back in and you could go upstairs, I think this would be a 5 star review. Right now it needs TLC. Her stuff is still there though. I wish they' d of upkept the garden it's a jungle mess back there. However, it's in a cool area to check out and a lovely drive just outside of DC. Enjoyed the visit there and the park ranger was the highlight of the trip.

The train still runs by and the water from Broad Run make a spectacular scene. Good for families, solo hikes, or a date. Really special place and important historical site.

I was driving down the interstate and all of a sudden I see this massive structure. I knew it was…read morehistoric. I flew on by realizing it would be painful trying to get there when I was on the same side as it was on my way to Shenandoah. On my way back, I managed to figure out what this place was. It was an old 5 story stacked stone structure built in 1742 that had survived several wars and milled food through all of them. in 1998, it was victimized by arson. The roof is gone, and the building has remanence from the fire. Currently, the mill is blocked off from being accessed. According to their website, they are making updates to the road. I accessed it by the railroad that runs behind the building, but as mentioned, the fence does prevent from access. It was really neat to see and I really wish it wasn't blocked off so I could get closer. It's definitely worth a stop if you're in Broad Run and into history.

Located in Old Town Fairfax (hence the name), this is the site of summer concerts, events, and a…read morelarge splash pad. There are tables around the splash pad but also grass and a stone wall. Space is limited, but not as well done as the old town Manassas one is. On a plus note Woodys Ice Cream is across the street. The tables are fairly comfortable. This is a delightful venue for "Rock the Block," and other events. Also the streets in old town are quite pedestrian friendly. Do be wary, but by all means enjoy the best part of Fairfax City. Get that ice cream or other foods from so many close by restaurants. The fountains add a look of intrigue.

This used to be the Prince William county. There are a number of historic buildings close together that you can view from the outside during a short walk. There is an old jail, school house, church and more. Free parking on site. No bathrooms. It looks like the do tours sometimes. No one was around when I was visiting.

Vint Hill is located between Gainesville and Warrenton. It is an emerging destination for locals…read moreand visitors. Vint Hill is a historic place. The U.S. Army operated a cryptology school and an intelligence gathering station at the former sheep and cattle farm during World War II. After the war, the Army used Vint Hill for research and development. The Army discontinued use of the property in 1997. Vint Hill now is open to the public. It is a scenic spot that offers many things to do. For food and beverages, there currently is a brewery, a winery, speciality food shop, cafe serving lunch, and more... These places are all located close to the Cold War Museum. There is a public swimming pool open seasonally. The tiny base movie theater still shows movies. There is a popular dog park. There are a number of park areas that are great for jogging, walking, or just relaxing. At the edge of Vint Hill, is Lake Brittle where you can go fishing, or rent a boat (seasonally). There is also a snack bar here open seasonally. Unfortunately, the park areas and the lake both lack bathroom facilities beyond port-a-potties. There are a number of businesses located at Vint Hill and one church that I am aware of. A lot of land is available for development. I heard that an independent coffee shop is slated to open. That would be great. I only hope that development does not get out of hand and ruin the nature areas that exist here. There is already extensive housing on the backside of Vint Hill. Traffic is not a problem here at present. Fingers crossed that new development is not overwhelming and that no more trees are cut down.
