Once I found out Delaplane Cellars was Black-Owned, it was a no-brainer. This winery is impeccable! The views of the vineyards, fields, mountains, and the cellar itself as you drive up are breathtaking. Making a reservation was a breeze, as was the check-in process. As I was waiting for my college friend and her husband to arrive, I was able to taste a couple of reds before I went outside to our table. The live music inside added a nice touch to the venue, and the inside has such an elegant look and feel, with comfortable seating and windows to take in the sights. There are multiple levels where you can sit outside, and we were on the top. Again, breathtaking views of the fields. The first wine I tried was the Adjacency. One of the smoothest wines I've ever had. The same could be said about the Rusticity. Both hit just the right notes with each sip. When my friends arrived, we caught up and put in food orders and a bottle of the Adjacency. We ordered the Virginia Sampler charcuterie board, fresh-baked baguettes, and the pepperoni flatbread. All of which hit the mark for our hunger and pairing with the wines. The Cabernet Franc was uniquely tasty, with a subtle bite to it. The rest of our time, we ordered a bottle of the Viognier and Rose. One huge plus and takeaway is that none of the wines we tried were overly sweet, even the Viognier with its white peach, melon, and jasmine flavors. The rose was our last bottle before we departed. I believe most of the seating outside is in the shade with all the trees. You select the any 5 wines you would like to taste. You also have the option to just order a glass or bottle. They have 3 whites, a rose, 4 reds, and 2 sweet wines. They bring you the 5 wines with a sheet of paper so you can take any notes or mark the ones you like. The tastings are a nice amount so that you can really taste the wine. They are working to become a certified organic winery. I did start with their Ancestral Chardonnay, which I didn't care for, but I really don't care for Chardonnay wines. It was made very different which is why I thought I would try it. My remaining tastes were all the reds. 2020 Cab Franc - I really liked this one. I generally like Cab Franc and this one did not disappoint. I thought it had a nice amount of spice to it. 2022 Petit Verdot (Estate) - This is another grape that I really enjoy and this one was also very good. 2022 Tannat (Estate) - I liked this one as well, but would have to say this was the least favorite of the reds. 2022 - Crooked Run (Estate) - This is a blend of Tannat, Petit Verdot, and Petit Sirah. I was greeted immediately upon entering and was guided to the station to decide on my wine flight. The winery is located in a house like structure. It is quaint and nicely decorated. I chose my 3 wines for my flight and proceeded upstairs to enjoy in their seating area. It is much warmer upstairs and comfy. I was the only one there. They do not have a kitchen on-site but have lots of options for snacks while visiting. Upstairs also has a full tasting bar. There are also some nearby areas that serve food that you can bring inside. The 2 highlights for me was the music selection! During my visit smooth jazz and blues could be enjoyed in the background which just added to the vibe of the place. And one of the owners is also an MSU alumni Go Green!

We decided to do a tasting and really enjoyed getting to try both the whites and reds. One of my favorite parts was hearing the story behind how the owner was able to get Albariño grapes to grow here -- it made the tasting feel even more interesting and unique. What started as a small group of four gradually grew as friends and family who were already wine tasting in the area stopped by to say hello and join us. Once management expressed concern about the group size, we immediately offered to separate into smaller groups and fully complied when asked to move outside. Despite this, the manager, Don, repeatedly threatened to remove us from the property and later doubled down on those comments when I spoke with him privately away from the group. What made the situation especially frustrating was that the property and indoor seating areas were largely empty at the time. We had already purchased multiple bottles of wine, people in our group were continuing to buy food and drinks, and there were several open tables available. The interaction felt unnecessarily hostile and disproportionate to the situation. Even more confusing, during my private conversation with Don, he mentioned there was a higher-priced option available for larger groups -- but this was never offered to us beforehand. Had that been communicated respectfully, we could have made an informed decision. Instead, the approach was confrontational from the start. Unfortunately, the poor experience extended beyond the seating issue. Early in the visit, when we asked staff basic questions about the wines and the property, the responses were dismissive and uninformed. One employee repeatedly told us "I don't know" when we asked about the wines, the grapes grown on-site, and even what was being served in the frozen wine machine. Part of the joy of visiting wineries, for me, is learning about the wines and engaging with staff who are passionate about the experience, and that hospitality was completely absent here. There are many wonderful wineries in the area that make guests feel welcomed and valued. Sadly, this was not one of them. This is a solid 4 stars BUT only if you are already knowledgeable about wine in general and a fan…read moreof high quality Virginia wines. In other words, this isn't a group event at a big winery with lower priced non-estate wine options type of place. Lost Mountain Vineyards used to be called RdV. In June 2024, RDV was acquired by Eutopia Estates which is owned by the Bouygues family of France. For now they are Bordeaux-style blends focused on Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. They have some white grape vines but they are not ready to produce wine yet. They tasting experience/tour lasts about 1.5 hours. You tour the front of the vineyard, the barrel cave and bottling facilities. Then you taste their three top red blends paired with ham, cheese, peanuts and biscuits. All the food comes from Virginia farms and producers. Both the wine and the food are excellent. Over $300 for the tour and tasting for my wife and I. We recently visited Daou in Paso Robles and had more food and wine at a lower price. Also the price points on the wine are not tied to market norms. The Lost Mountain is $225 per bottle and the Rendezvous $110. This is considerably more than some of the best Virginia wines. For example, Linden's 2021 Hardscrabble Red is $68, The Barboursville Octagon 2021 is $75 and Glen Manor's 2022 Hodder Hill is $65. And at Total Wine one can purchase dozens of Bordeaux wines with 95 and up ratings for less than $100. We had a great time and enjoyed some high quality food and wines. But due to the price point relative to other great vineyards we will not likely be back.

The tour/tasting is the most expensive one we've ever done (at $120 a person for 5 wines & a charcuterie board) but for the space and quality of the wines, it didn't feel like a waste. The property and underground caves were stunning, the staff was extremely knowledgeable and friendly, and the overall atmosphere was very relaxed. We paid for a small group tour, but no one else signed up for our time slot, so we ended up having a totally private experience, which was a nice surprise. Take note, they only produce red wines, so if you're looking for whites or sweeter wines, this might mot be the best place for you.
