Long gone are the days where the fountain was a musical centerpiece of East Passyunk Ave. But I'm…read morefine with not being able to reminisce to some Sinatra so long as the Avenue has gained such a noteworthy centerpiece in its wake! While the old fountain still exists at the core, rather than fence it in they opened up the space and added welcoming tables and benches, and a take a book leave a book station. The end result is the perfect seasonal parklet that's perfectly fitting in the time of East Passyunk's restaurant renaissance, and you'll almost always see a few South Philly characters taking it all in. While the Fountain is always the perfect spot to kick back and relax to a good book, It also see's it's share of action including the Wednesday Farmer's Market, holiday activities once the fountain gets transformed into a "Christmas tree", and a dj/music station during all of East Passyunk Ave's street festivals.

Definitely a cool bit of history in Monument City!…read more The Washington Monument is the first major monument dedicated to this country's first president. Inside the building, there is a little area with interactive screens explaining the history of the monument in Baltimore city. This is free to peruse. For a modest price, you can reserve a time to go up the tower portion of the monument. It is clearly old, with stone steps spiraling up clockwise until reaching an observation spot at the top. It is tight and you may have to wait in the odd window well while someone else goes up or down past you. There are four windows each labeled "North," "South," "East," and "West" with different vistas of the city. My kids are rather enjoyed it; even Child #3 climbed up over half the steps on his own at just shy of 2 years old. The surrounding area of "Mount Vernon Place" is covered with nice areas for sitting, looking at statues of contemporaries of George Washington (e.g. the Marquis de Lafayette). Highly recommend coming out during Flower Fest in early May!

The pathway up the street was serene and there were a couple of statues along the way. The monument is surrounded by a roundabout and stands tall and proud smack in the middle of it. It's fairly clean, has a visitors center (for the city not only the park) and a nice fountain that you can go in if you're adventurous or a kid. We did not, but on a warm day like it was the idea was tempting. Love Park isn't a huge park by any means, but a good place to take a walk, enjoy the welcoming atmosphere and share the time with someone you love. Love wins.

Stopped at Franklin Square during a Big Bus city holiday lights tour to see the PECO Light Show, a…read morelight show synchronized to seasonal music throughout the entire area. The park's carousel is illuminated with festive lights, and seemed to be a hit with the families present. Seasonal treats and warm beverages were available at the on-site SquareBurger, priced as one would expect at a tourist location like this. While the festive decorations and activities are lovely, the park was quite crowded, while we were there. Also, the bathroom trailer was absolutely disgusting, despite a small team of custodial employees on site, so plan on holding it while you're there if you can! All in all, Franklin Square was a pleasant diversion, I wouldn't make a special trip to visit.

Architecturally, the building's style is "carpenter Gothic" with a steep gable roof, decorative slate work, and pointed arched windows. It could be mistaken for a country chapel sitting alongside Lake Afton. The Old Library is a perfect spot for community events, and it may be rented for meetings and special occasions. It's interior layout consists of one large room with a restroom.

Since retiring, I've been hitting up every outdoor space on my list. I came to walk the trail(s), but one visit is simply not enough. I see that now. I'll definitely have to come back on my bike to get the lay of the land. Random, but everytime I come to this park, my GPS takes me on a tour of the neighborhood when I can see the park is RIGHT THERE. Anyway, I came during the week and parked on a side road inside the park. Again, I'm not really familiar with the best place to park to access whatever it is I'm trying to access. I started walking on the trail and was actually hoping I didn't get lost (even though my Garmin can take me back to my starting point). I asked a woman where to go and she directed me to 'the loop'. The loop will work for today! Apparently the loop was closed due to construction. There's work being done on the water tanks (or something like that). But the loop is open, and it's a bit over 1 mile. It's smooth, and I'm already plotting to try it on my bike. But there's absolutely NO SHADE on this portion, so plan accordingly. From the loop I could see the pool, tennis courts, and basketball courts, so I made my way there, via a trail. Again, the park is huge! From my research, it's the third oldest established park in the United States! Whoa! And, it covers 745 acres of land. Like I said, you'll have to come more than once to see all there is to see. That includes the Baltimore Zoo, which is inside the park. I'll be back on my bike for more recon.

I haven't been to this park since a child, therefore; I've never had the chance to actually enjoy…read moreit. Today I visited the park with a group of people and it was amazing. The park is well kept, the grounds were nicely cut and preserved. There were dears out in the middle of the day, there were pavilion areas with picnic tables , trash cans and port of John's (bathroom), I will definitely be visiting again. I noticed that there were working in a project around the reservoir and I can't wait to see it .
