TLDR: I would absolutely recommend Dave for anyone that is unsure about who to turn to for help. I adopted a 3yr rescue poodle mix (Mac) about 2 years ago. It became clear pretty early on that he had some intense fear/anxiety issues. He was reactive on the leash and I felt like I couldn't invite people into my home anymore. Mac had a very small circle of friends/family that he trusted and anybody new was a threat to him. I was worried about whether or not I would be able to handle him. I spent weeks reading reviews with 100 tabs open trying to find just the right person for Mac. Dave had the upmost patience with Mac and with me as well. We are so thrilled that we found Dave. We have a 2 year old rottie mix who is actually fairly well trained in terms of basic skills. We started group training with him when he was a puppy so he knows all the basic commands, he's great in the house, and he doesn't have any separation issues. Unfortunately, the poor little guy suffers from severe anxiety that around the age of 1 started manifesting as fear aggression. He was so afraid (even of us) that our efforts to continue his training at that time seemed hopeless. At the worst point, we couldn't even get near him to put a collar on him or walk by him on his bed without a growl and sometimes a warning snap. We took him to a vet behaviorist who evaluated him and prescribed medication for his anxiety. After about a year of adjusting his meds, he is doing exceptionally well under the circumstances and our vet behaviorist recommended we start training with him again. The medication has relieved his stress response considerably, but the stimuli that frighten him are still a challenge (other dogs, kids, strangers petting him, garbage trucks, etc.). We'd done group training with another force-free trainer in the past and one private session, but our concern with her was that she seemed to want us to just avoid all the things that stimulate Ender's fear reaction. This is really really hard when so many things scare your dog. We heard about Dave through a friend and figured we had nothing to lose with the free consultation that he offers (wow, right?!). We were immediately impressed by Dave. He is the 4th trainer we've used, and he'll be our last--no more searching for a good trainer! He asked a lot of questions initially to really understand our dog and his issues and what we've been doing to try to work on them. In our two training sessions, he helped us to understand the difference between rewarding avoidance and counter-conditioning. It's a subtle (but really important) difference. He demonstrated exactly what we need to do in the situations that cause anxiety to start developing more positive associations. This is advanced stuff, and Dave knows it all. This dude has a million 5 star reviews, what else can I say that everyone hasn't already? I recently "adopted" a pit/lab mix pup, in a house that already has two cats and a big chocolate lab who all sleep on the bed together and don't really know they are different species. Dave did a great job helping train our dog Marvin (and us)! He is very knowledgeable about positive reinforcement training and helped dispel some preconceived notions about dog behavior that we had heard over the years. In the 2 or so months that Dave has worked with my 4yr old Maltese, Mickey, an incredible improvement in his behavior has occurred --wholly achieved through positive-based training. (What does that mean? Providing praise and food in lieu of shouts, choke-chains, and electric shocks as incentives to modify behavior.) Mickey experienced an attack from a large dog 3 years ago and a fall from a car window that resulted in 2 surgeries on his right hind leg last summer. These incidents greatly contributed to the little guy having fear, lack of confidence, and anxiety. We adopted our dog in September, an extremely handsome 3-year-old collie mix (not biased at all!). Initially, our focus was leash training and ensuring our two cats' safety, as our cats are 10 and 12-yrs-old, and not defensively minded when it comes to setting boundaries with a 60 pound pup. Dave came highly recommended and our first session gave us the tools to leash train with positive reinforcement, and virtually "solved" how we dealt with our dog-cat interaction in our 2-bedroom apartment. And then... we had a biting incident in our home. We were distraught. Suddenly the cat socialization took a backseat, and our dog's fear and anxiety became our focus. Dave has truly exceeded our dog-training hopes and expectations. Prior to meeting Dave, we worried that our dog would not be receptive to training. Our dog failed miserably during group-classes at Petco, and we felt defeated when it came to potty training. Dave was able to articulate our dog's behaviors and needs, and he taught us successful training strategies. As Dave explained, our dog had a lot of "piss and vinegar" to him, and we needed to teach him how to channel his energy in an appropriate manner. Within the first few minutes of our consult, Dave had already taught our dog a self-soothing method that he continues to use when he gets riled up. It is amazing to see how much progress Dave has been able to make with our dog, Disco, in just a few sessions. I reached out to Dave because I was having a hard time with my dogs Gus & Oliver. The main issues that I wanted to work on were Oliver's nasty poop-eating habit, and both dogs' reactivity to other people and other dogs around us (either on the street during walks, or with friends in my apartment, etc.). Dave came over for a long (1+ hour), free consultation, asked a ton of questions, took notes on the observations that he made, and sent me a very long email the next day that outlined a ton of initial steps that I could take to improve both issues right away. For Oliver's bad habit, he recommended that I see a specific vet in my neighborhood (Palms) and that I ask about a dietary supplement that could turn the problem around. I did exactly that, and after 1-2 months of being on inexpensive supplements, his nasty habit was just a distant memory. (This sounds like a small thing - but I cannot tell you how much it improved my relationship with my dog when he finally broke this habit!) We needed to work in person to deal with my dogs' reactivity and behavior issues, so we met for two hour-long appointments (spaced about 1 month apart) during which he gave me lots of additional tips and tricks, did demonstrations for how I can better manage their behavior and hold their attention when they might be triggered by stimuli, and more importantly, made me realize that the most important (and first) step in working with my dogs is to take a step back, relax, and be patient. A lengthy and thorough email with more recommendations followed each appointment, which I continue to refer to whenever I need a refresher. Through our sessions, Dave has taught me to recognize his underlying anxiety and lack of confidence that was causing what I perceived to be general greyhound laziness. During our first session, Falkor got so excited that he starting chasing and throwing around his toys, something he had never done before. My neighbors have even noticed how much of a happier dog he is. He will now happily walk up to strangers on walks to say hi or take food from your hand. He now loves toys and gets excited to greet other dogs. His transformation through our training with Dave has been amazing. He takes such a gentle and calm approach to the training, which is something Falkor really responded well to. Dave is a master of canine body language, and made sure never to push Falkor more than he was ready to.
