P.P. is a mixed bag. On one hand, every time I take a class here, I feel ripped within a couple hours-- On the other hand, some of the instructors here, make me want to curl up in a ball and die. Apparently I don't get all this new lingo, new movement, and new positioning and am a complete retard, because I'm not catching on to each movement in under a split second! More than a few of the teachers here, were in dance companies or ballet prior to their new career in Pilates Instruction and to me, it explains everything. The attitude, the complete lack of patience and/or understanding and even the desire to help the students! Yes, I get that, we are supposed to be pushed, but honestly, sometimes (one of the teachers there specifically), seems very excited and enthused to see me fail, miserably. So my advise, if you are taking classes here (I haven't tried the private instruction, yet...) is to make sure you've got thick skin and can deal with instructors that expect the most out of you from the very start. If you are already seasoned in all Pilates, know all the lingo, names of equipment, etc... you will have no problems here. It's a great place to go for the core, and well... total body toning. As I have been searching around to see what other Pilates places are like, I noticed that the prices are particularly high in comparison to classes in San Francisco, Mountain View and Menlo Park; but at the same time, the studio is probably one of the cleanest, most well kept places I've seen, besides Maiden Lane Studios in San Francisco. read more

I've been coming to Purely Pilates for the past 7 months and it's been a tremendous experience. I have taken the majority of my group and private lessons with Donesa Croskery and she's one of the best instructors I've had for any type of activity. She's passionate about helping her students improve, clear in her instruction, patient in making sure you do all the exercises correctly, and mindful of any injuries or difficulties you may have. I've improved so much in her classes... doing exercises that I once thought were impossible. I've been so pleased with her instruction, I've introduced 3 others to her classes. In addition to Donesa, the rest of the staff is great. Liz, Allison, and Melody are all super friendly and helpful. Both their Belmont and Los Altos locations are very clean with lots of equipment. It is a great way to check out if the studio is appropriate for you... ------ Finished up my Groupon promotion (5 classes) here at Purely Pilates this week. I tried out 3 different instructors for the basic reformer and basic mat class. My best "go to" instructor would be with Andrea Roberts. She makes me feel comfortable as a new comer, demonstrates on the reformer how to "correctly" and "not correctly" perform the pilates move. PARKING - plenty in the lot and a bit tricky to find the studio in the beginning. CLASSES - I love how there is online self scheduling. It makes it so much easier and I like to see which "instructor" is teaching the class. I heard they will be opening up a studio in Los Altos soon. I wasn't use to this type of classical pilates but I'm glad to be exposed to it. read more

I started going to PP about 10 months ago. I really enjoy going to PP. The space is very pleasant and the equipment in good condition. Fitness has always been a big part of my life and I was looking for something new to mix up my routine. And Pilates has been the perfect addition. This is my first exposure to Pilates. And thanks to all of the instructors at PP - Emily, Sarah, Traci,, Nicole, Liz, and Donesa - I feel stronger and better than ever - more flexible, greater freedom of movement, increased core strength. And I think my girlfriend thinks I am cuter than ever. :-) Each instructor offers their own unique perspective to Pilates instruction, which I enjoy. Everyone has been welcoming and friendly. I came here because of the Groupon promotion, but I had been wanting to check it out for awhile. I really liked the studio--it was a nice size but the classes are small so I felt like I was able to get the attention I needed. I am new to pilates, so it was perfect for a beginner like myself. I did subtract one star since because the classes are so small, I've been having trouble getting into the class I want to attend. I tried both the reformer and mat class and enjoyed both. read more

I've been coming to Purely Pilates for almost 2 years now. I was a newcomer to Pilates when i first started. I had taken some classes here and there - but mostly at larger studios and classes where i often left feeling like i had wasted my time. Coming to Purely Pilates has totally changed that. I had just come off of a bad knee injury and was looking to strengthen my core - I started taking both mat and springs & pulleys classes. I primarily only do springs and pulleys now. The first thing you notice is that the facility is clean, nice and never loud and boisterous. The classes and the instructors are the main draw. The classes are very small - which allows each student to get personal attention. Each instructor has a slightly different approach to teaching and i would just recommend going to a few different classes so you can get a feel for which style you connect best with. there are a ton of different classes to choose from and different levels as you improve. I can not say enough great things about Purely Pilates. I get sad when i have conflicts and cant go to my regular classes and I never leave without feeling like i've gotten a great workout, both mentally and physically. 5 stars! read more

Let preface this by saying that I started here during the holidays....when my trainer went on vacation. It was slow going, and I took a month of lessons before I went 'back' to the group classes. The teachers are very knowledgeable, and the attitude is to continue to progress to greater levels of strength, flexibility...and it takes a lot of patience. I've also attended some of the wellness 'seminars' taught. And, I've gone to the second location in Los Altos - which has the same instructors, but a totally different energy. Pilates is a discipline that becomes HARDER over time. Exercises that once seemed easy or trivial can kick your ass after you learn to do them right. Beware of someone who takes one class (or even 20!) and thinks they 'know' what Pilates is all about! I have been going to Purely Pilates for 3 years now and I am always impressed by the quality of the instructors. There is an astounding amount of well maintained equipment and the space is clean and spacious. The owner, Allison, has done a great job of creating a superb fitness center. My body has changed so much since I started going to Purely Pilates. I have been a student of Pilates for about 7 years, but I really started to see dramatic improvements since I began training at Purely Pilates with Anna and Emily. They are both wonderful instructors and are sticklers for making sure exercises are done correctly so you get the most out of your time (and money). I have also trained with Jen and Liz and they are excellent teachers. Every instructor in the studio is dedicated, with an extensive background in Pilates and the classical method. Anna is my primary instructor and has taught me so much. She believes in making sure form and function are followed in the true 'Joseph Pilates' spirit. Anna has been instrumental in developing my core strength, elongating my limbs and torso while improving my balance and posture. She is a fabulous trainer! She has created a training space that is suited for beginners through advanced practitioners. There are two rooms with cadillacs of various makes so if you're a Peak or a Gratz person, you'll find a machine you like. The mat room has tower equipment, and there's a dedicated Gyrotonics space. When the teachers take each other's classes you know you are in a supportive, kind, learning environment. I started coming to Purely Pilates 5 years ago after a horrible back injury. The classes and instructors here have been incredible. My physical therapist and chiropractor have repeatedly commented on my significant recovery and core strength - all a result of working out with the wonderful and professional instructors here. All of the instructors here are really good at what they do and I love taking classes with all of them. I have a full time career and I'm a mom but I became such a regular at the studio I was eager to become a part of the Purely Pilates team and two years ago I started doing some part time work here. This is an amazing place to work-out, I love the things I have learned to do with my body (sometimes I joke that we are all in training to become part of cirque de soule). Bought a groupon for 3-reformer classes and 3-Matt classes. I'm very disappointed in how the groupon can be used. Once my friend and I went in to get started we were told we could only go to basic classes. I can understand that being a beginner, I would be encouraged to go to basic classes so the 3- reformer deal probably isn't the best way to go since you are pigeon holed into only a few options. There is nothing in the groupon stating we are limited into which classes we can take. Had i known that and known that there is little choice amongst the basic classes, I would not have bought this groupon. This is a problem as both of us are nurses and our schedules have little consistency. For that reason I feel we were misled. The schedule is lacking class options as is and I feel I really am not getting much use out of this groupon. Pricing is insane as well. Regular priced class is $40.00. For one class? Nein!!! The one star is for a clean environment and teachers that I liked. It's not their fault, and Nicole is a great teacher. read more

I am visiting the area for the weekend. Based on the good reviews I saw here on Yelp, I took a Pilates mat class with Kathy today. The facility was very nice, the person who greeted me at the door (Allison?) was wonderful. But my instructor was not great, compared to what I'm used to in Seattle. Good "hard skills"--that is, she is clearly an experienced Pilates instructor who has developed good routines. But really unimpressive "soft skills." I told her that I had only taken one mat class before. (I have taken group Reformer classes about once a week for the past four years.) She provided me with a bit of extra help, but her "bedside manner" was lousy. Not only was she not encouraging. She was a bit insulting and condescending. Really diminished the experience for me. read more

Bought a Groupon and tried this place out. Have been coming here for some time now and really like it. I can feel the difference from the mat workouts. At first it was a bit difficult to figure out the terms and the moves since the instructors do not really explain them to you. You just figure things out by watching others. And all instructors have their own styles - some prefer to focus on the exact form and others go more with the flow. I like the pace of Traci's classes the best. The only complains I have are the cost of classes being a bit high to go more than once per week, there are not enough beginner mat classes (no options on Friday at all), would prefer a bit more consistency between the different instructors. read more

This is the studio where I started my pilates training 5 years ago and it is definitely one of the best studios I know (I have been to many studios around the country since I travel a lot). All the teachers here are top notch. They all have gone through hundreds of hours (600+) of training (classical method) before they were certified to teach. I especially mentioned 'classical method' here because it is the original method created by Joseph Pilates. And in my opinion, it is the only real pilates. Nowadays, the term pilates has been widely abused. Many studios claim they teach pilates when none of their teachers have gone through proper trainings. I have been to a gym before where an instructor claimed he was teaching pilates after only attending a weekend workshop. Instructors are extremely important when it comes to pilates because right forms make all the difference. And you can not go wrong with any of the instructors at Purely Pilates. They are extremely nice too. For me, going to the studio is like going to a sanctuary after a day of hard work. All the equipments are top notch and well maintained. Classes are small so you will get all the attentions you need. Prices are reasonable for the type of training you are getting. All in all, I love this studio and I owe my dancer's body (I was often mistaken as a dancer) to Purely Pilates! read more

The classical Pilates method or "the way Joseph did it" has its pros and cons. However, this spacious and well-maintained studio offers small group classes that provide a great workout. My all-time favorite is the Basic Springs and Pulleys class, which uses the wall units and some props. My body always feel so supported and toned afterwards... it's the greatest feeling! read more

I bought a deal through living social for my mom. She has very bad arthritis and is limited with the type of exercise she can do. After her first basic mat class she came home so happy and excited and raving about the instructor. She had nothing but positive things to say about the class, the facility, and the instructor, I think her name is Fumiko. My daughter is an avid ice skater and has been taking pilates with Sarah since October 2012. I love working with Sarah because she has a great eye for details and is able to explain positions and maneuvers in a way that my daughter understands. Through Sarah's training, my daughter has strengthened her core muscles, learned how to stretch in a safe manner, and overcome some poor posture and balancing issues. And, Sarah is able to accomplish all this with my daughter with a gracious smile, patience and kindness. There have been results! My daughter's spiral is way higher than before (one foot held up high in the air while skating on the other foot -- think of Michelle Kwan) and her sit spins are lower -- signs that Pilates is working! Now that I've seen the results with my daughter, I may try a class in the near future! read more

I've been taking both mat and springs & pulleys classes from Purely Pilates for 4 years now. My main goals were to tone up my core and counterbalance all of the running I do. Not one to commit to (or even really enjoy exercise "classes") the fact that I've been religious about pilates for four years says a lot! Several students in my class have been going just as long. The facility is nice and clean, parking is abundant. But that isn't my draw, my gym offers all of those things too, the real draw is the instructors who really know how to teach classical pilates! The classes are small which allows each student to get personal attention. Each instructor has a slightly different style, which I love, because I have learned different things from each of them. Their attention to form is immaculate, which is what you need in order to get the most out of it, why pay for the class if you're not going to perform the exercises properly? The instructors are also very willing to modify specific exercises for a student if they have an injury or limitations. My primary instructor over the past 4 years has been Anna. I have to disagree with A.H.'s negative comments and attitude on the class. There is a reason the classes are taught the way they are taught. I'm an intermediate/advanced student who occasionally drops into a beginner class and I still manage to get an excellent workout; sometimes it is good to return focus to the basics and the form. Pilates is, afterall, based on good form and alignment. Anna keeps the classes interesting by varying the routines and keeps her skills sharp by attending pilates workshops. read more

For those who haven't done Pilates, don't try to learn it from a video. Instead, allow yourself be introduced to it through Purely Pilates and get the instruction and help that you need to do this effectively. The well-trained instructors are exceptionally good at helping you connect with the method. Unlike so many other gym classes, the instructors aren't doing the exercises alongside you, so their watchful eyes and hands are there to help you correct your technique. For those who've done Pilates and are seeking a studio, I highly recommend Purely Pilates. I take all the classes there regularly and find the instructors (and my classmates!) to be continually challenging, motivating and entertaining. I doubt you'll find better and/or more traditional instruction in the area. While I agree with the comments about location, I would counter by saying the location to 101 makes it fairly convenient for those who commute. Parking is never a problem. And once class begins, the only location I'm thinking about is that of my powerhouse! read more

We all know that it's important to exercise. The trouble is finding an exercise program you will want to stick with over the years, a sustainable program that continues to interest and challenge you. Pilates has been a mainstay of my exercise program over the past four years and I still enjoy it. A large part of why I have stuck with Pilates over the years is my instructor, Anna. I appreciate Anna's professionalism and expertise; the breadth of her knowledge is impressive. Anna's experience allows her to explain precisely which muscles to engage and how to make them work so you will see results in increased strength and body tone. Her attention to body position means that she sees when you need to make a correction and can cue you accordingly. And, her dedication to continuing her own training means that she is up on the latest techniques and modifications. Great couple of 1-2-1s here being taught how to use the reformer and equipment during a 2 week holiday in the area. Friendly and helpful at every stage. Allison the owner was so helpful and personable, from the second I walked inside I was immediately attended to, and far from an intimidating studio it was a really welcoming environment. I hadn't tried the pilates equipment before and after discussion of what package might be best I booked and had a great session both with Fukimo and Jamie. The staff were accommodating of booking dates and times, which I had to juggle a bit, which I really appreciated. I can't recommend this place enough. And the benefits of regular attendance were immediately obvious. I just wish I had been able to to attend more classes! read more

I've been working out at Purely Pilates for about 5 years and cannot say enough about the studio owner, Allison, and the staff. All of the instructors are friendly and knowledgeable, and are able to challenge everyone from new beginners to the most experienced practitioners. Instructors tailor exercises for individuals with specific needs/limitations, yet still provide the client with a thorough workout, in both private sessions as well as group classes. I've been to other studios within the area which combine Pilates with strength training/cardio, which is all the rage right now, but these studios really just dilute the work of Joseph Pilates. Form and precision are often compromised in favor of maximizing repetitions, and clients receive few, if any, corrections during class. In summary, if you're looking for a true Pilates experience, Purely Pilates is the place. Allison's other studio, Evolve Classical Pilates located in Los Altos, is also a wonderful studio to get your Pilates fix. read more

She is a trainer at Purely Pilates and really listens to what I have to say if something feels off she always has the answer. I am a first timer to pilates and at first was extremely intimidated to go outside of my "box" and try something new. I am so glad that I did, the place is clean, never overly crowded and EVERYONE is super nice. I am a former athlete and wasn't expecting someone to really push my limits like I was use to in the past, but when I leave after my hour long session not only feel like I had a great workout but I leave feeling refreshed. It's stuck in this mini industrial park that tries to pass itself off as a business park. It's like someone took a bunch of Public Storage facilities, dropped in electricity, and voila, retail space. Anyway, all the teachers I have experienced so far are top notch. They have all been certified in the official Pilates Method and teach in the East Coast/Classical Pilates style. I have taken private lessons with 3 different instructors and would recommend all of them. Basically, they do what I wanted...kick my ass. The Pilates movements need to be done in correct form due to the short amount of repetitions. All of these instructors know how to correct your alignment, breathing, foot position, etc. which is something your taebo/jazzercise/sweating-to-the-oldies instructor cannot do correctly. The equipment is well maintained and they have all of the Pilates appartuses. Staring at 101 is not the most inspiring view though. read more

About two weeks ago I started going to Purely Pilates. Having never done Pilates before...I was able to take advantage of an incredible Beginner Package that they offer for $125. The package includes a Private Session (with a fully certified instructor), a Basic Mat Class, a Basic Springs and Pulley Class and a Basic Reformer Class. It is a fantastic way to sample everything before deciding which best suits you. Well...to my surprise I loved it all and ended up purchasing a package each of Privates, S & P, AND Reformer classes!! It was quite the investment, BUT having had issues with the lumbar area of my back for the last few years it is the FIRST physical activity that has NOT bothered me! (Strong core = strong back, right?) That gave me the incentive to continue with it... I disagree with the poor review on Anna. While I have not taken her class personally, I have watched her teach while I am waiting for my class to start. She has a very nice way about her and seems to want her students to excel, while staying true to the original form. My goal is to put Joseph Pilates' theory to the test, which is: "In 10 sessions you will feel the difference, in 20 you will see the difference, and in 30 you will have a whole new body." I'm 4 into it...and so far so good!! read more

I used to take Pilates at Equinox and until I started going to Purely Pilates 2 years ago, didn't know what I was missing. The classes are small and the instructors are great. Contrary to the last reviewer, I disagree about her assesment of Anna. Anna IS the reason I keep going back to Purely Pilates. She focuses on form first and foremost and can juggle students of different levels. Honestly, don't know how shes does it. I have learned more from her than from anyone else... and somehow when I leave, I walk a lot taller and happier than when I walked in the door. When you are in a small class, you get a lot more attention than in a gym class... and that can be intimidating to some. But, for me, I have seen a huge progression in my Pilates since taking classes there. I have sampled all of the classes (mat, springs and pulleys and reformer). They all have something to offer. I recently took Bar Method and was deeply disappointed that the cost was the same, the instructor was terrible and I was out $25. Not the case here. For a total exercise regime, you probably do need more than Pilates to lose weight. But to tone, to strengthen and even to destress, I love taking these classes! read more

I started going to Pilates after it was recommended to me by a fellow ballroom dancer after I injured my knee. I chose Purely Pilates because it is located between my home and the dance studio and can be conveniently accessed from the freeway. I chose to work with the owner, Allison, who is a teacher trainer, but after hanging out there for the last year and a half I can say that all the teachers seem very competent. They are also quite different so probably anyone can find a teacher that suits their style and needs. Having completed the rehabilitation on my knee I continued my workouts with Allison because I could sense the improvement it was making on my ballroom dancing. My posture has become much better and my use of my center has become much more controlled. This was verified when an out of town coach commented on how much more effectively I was using my core. Pilates has become a critical part of my cross training and I really suffer when I don't have time to drop by. The studio itself is fabulous - lots of great equipment and a very friendly yet professional atmosphere. Can't recommend it highly enough. read more

I've been attending classes and taking private sessions at Purely Pilates regularly for about two years. The instructors I've worked with (a fair proportion of the staff by now) have ranged from very very good to simply brilliant. All are thoroughly (and well) trained in Classical Pilates, most of them in the system defined by Power Pilates in New York. They are exceedingly focused and observant during sessions, and generous with correction. (Recommendation: bring the Zen practice of Beginner's Mind to every session at Purely.) The studio is immaculate, appropriately lit, and comfortable. The equipment is of the best quality, and well maintained. All the major Pilates equipment is available, and all the teachers are trained in the use of all the apparatus. There are even some of the rarer pieces (the "Guillotine" or "True Tower", for example). There is an active apprenticeship program. (Power Pilates instructor training requires a 600-hour apprenticeship for certification.) This has benefits for clients, because apprentices conduct private sessions for a reduced fee. Allison, the owner, is Regional Director of the Power Pilates training program. Distinguished members of the Pilates community visit from time to time for special events. As far as I'm concerned, this studio (along with its sister studio Evolve in Los Altos) is THE place in our area to practice Pilates. read more

I signed up for personal training classes with Jen Powell at Purely Pilates when I realized that I was having problems (mostly with my back) with simple, routine tasks like vacuuming, carrying my laptop case for long periods or even just spending a day walking a tradeshow. I had once used a reformer as part of a physical therapy program prescribed by a doctor when healing from an injury. While going to physical therapy for six weeks I saw the reformer used to rehabilitate many people post surgery or post injury and figured it might be a good idea to find out more about how to use the reformer as part of an exercise program to gain strength. In my search for reformer exercises I discovered and read up on Pilates and figured I should give it a try but I had no idea where to start. I knew I needed help learning how to do Pilates correctly in order to get the maximum benefits available in exchange for my time and effort. I searched for a local studio and quite by accident discovered Jen Powell at Purely Pilates who turned out to be the perfect trainer! Jen took the time to get to know me, my body and my goals and she modified a program to specifically fit my strength level, taking things slowly to insure that I understood proper form and to insure my health and safety and when I advanced she challenged me to keep going. It was a truly amazing experience to see and feel my strength improve session after session. My success and increased strength motivated me to keep coming back for more. What started out as a once a week session quickly became two, then three times a week. I loved taking Pilates with Jen. I lost inches and pant sizes without that being my prime motivator. In addition, I melted away a lot of stress and always left the studio feeling so much better than when I walked in. I highly recommend Jen as a Pilates Instructor and personal trainer to anyone looking to invest in their body, mind and overall well-being. read more

Four years ago an injury to my neck (thank-you equines) had me bedridden for 6 weeks. It was about a year later, I started pilates with Nicole. She has dilgently guided me through exercises each week that have strenghtened, toned and mobilized, those stiff, weak and immobile parts of my body. My body is hardly ever in the same state on my lesson day each week, so Nicole can never plan out a lesson for me in advance. I have been to this studio before, and am sadly writing them a negative review based on the poor customer service I received on my last visit. I came in to use my Spafinder gift card to attend a class, and was turned away because the instructors on staff did not know how to run the transaction and were unwilling to accommodate despite the fact that they definitely except these gift cards. Not only did I miss the opportunity to work out that evening as a result of making the trip and dealing with the hassle, the staff promised to follow up to ensure that this type of inconvenience wouldn't happen again. However, after I gave them my information, no attempt was made to fulfill this promise. As a result, they lost out on the $40 from my participation in that class and on the subsequent package I had planned on purchasing that day. I hope that they realize the value in customer loyalty by reading this review and can improve their services to include quality customer support that meets the high price of their services. read more
