Cary (the owner) came in with the first of several estimates. Of the contractors I contacted, he best understood what I wanted. My house had rotting window frames, uneven bad-looking shake shingle siding that was long past the day I should have done something about it. A house down the street had the look I wanted, and Cary quoted me the price. I also asked about replacing my front and side doors. The siding color I wanted was a special order, so I had to wait a couple weeks for it to be made. It was well worth the wait. Lifetime supplied a brand called "Perfection" and it is truly perfect siding. The siding sections lock together in a way that I don't think even a hurricane would loosen them. All the rotted wood was replaced with Azek trim. The result is my 70-year-old run-down house now looks like a new build. The doors that leaked cold air during the winter are gone. I am very satisfied.

Told him we'd think about it over the weekend and contact him Monday. Monday rolls around, I call. Owner has left for vacation. Leave a message telling him I wanted a quote on a different window manufacturer and call again the next week. Find out that he's left town for a few months and will contact me when he gets back. Apparently no one else can do anything there. So fast forward to the beginning of May. Call and tell them I already bought the windows elsewhere since I wanted to get them on order with a long lead time and no one at Sahlems could bother quoting me, but wanted to proceed with the siding quote. I get a call back 2 weeks later from some lackey telling me that the owner feels "uncomfortable" doing the siding because he isn't doing the windows, and feels the windows will leak. Whatever, maybe if you bothered to return my numerous calls or had someone in the office competent enough to answer my questions, this could have worked out differently. They came out and gave me an estimate where a competitor wanted to come out and do the work but wouldn't give me a ball park number first. Others didn't respond. The weather caused the appointment to be pushed multiple times (snow and high speed winds which is what caused the damage in the first place), but the work is done and the gutter appears very secure now. Pricing seemed reasonable for the time and materials used. They were friendly and open to various payment options. The estimate came slightly under the quote, (rounding distance so very slight) which is always nice. Notes: I know it's hard being a contractor and taking calls while working, but more prompt notifications about appointments being moved would be nice. Communication wasn't timely but I had the sense that there wasn't a home office fielding work, so I'm certainly more understanding. Hard to be timely when you're dangling from roofs trying to get work down before the next storm wave. They were certainly better than some other contractors I recently worked with.
