I normally don't leave reviews, but I felt like I should. To begin, my starboard engine would turn over but not start. Explorer Marine sent out their lead mechanic, Beto, who had repaired my cousin's generator. The issue I was having was the gauge was showing a "check sensor, check engine message." Beto came out the first day and spent 6.5 hours diagnosing the issue, which he found. I was with him the entire day. I went to my boat a week later and the engine wouldn't start again. This time the gauge showed a "lost comm" error. Beto returned to my boat yesterday and left after a couple of hours. He said it was due to corroded connectors. I wasn't with him this time. Again, I saw him arrive and leave on my Ring camera today. I thought he had fixed it yesterday. He and another technician spent a couple more hours to mitigate a different issue. I thought, "Great, what now?" My head was exploding with dollar signs increasing. After speaking with Michael (Manager), it turns out one of the connector pins that plugs into the pcm was bent. It must have inadvertently happened when Beto was working on my boat the first time he was over. I emailed Shannon, the office manager and told her that I had spoken to Michael, who mentioned the issue was a "bent" connector pin. Beto confirmed it with the office, therefore, it was covered under warranty. If it was a different issue, it would have cost me even more. I HIGHLY recommend Explorer Marine. I feel a business with integrity will be nothing, but successful. They could have told me it was a different issue and could have charged me even more. Boat mechanics are NOT cheap and a good and honest company is almost impossible to find. Thank you Beto and Explorer Marine for your honesty!! Great service and great customer experience. I had an issue with the engine of my sailboat and had to come bacl to the dock mid trip, Explorer marine services did not charge for an assesment or a minimum just tpo check out the problem, the gusy showed up detected the issue within 20 minute and two hours later my engine was running like, new, they eliminated one of the unecesary water filters that was an aftermarket piece with two valves, reconfigured it and did a hole diagmnostics, two fays later i was on the watr on a 14 hour trip with no issues and my engine was running great. My encounter with Explorer Marine Services and their service manager, Michael Hood, proved to be an utter catastrophe. Entrusting them with the task of resolving the overheating problem plaguing my 2005 Bayliner only amplified my woes. Regrettably, Michael's, Beto's and Ben's inadequacies in both communication and troubleshooting served to exacerbate the issue, with each attempted repair endeavor introducing a fresh set of complications, laying bare their lack of expertise and work ethic. Despite their efforts to rectify the matter, such as replacing various components like manifolds, elbows, circulating pumps, and fuel pumps, their workmanship was marred by carelessness, culminating in a significant fuel leak, damaged bellows, broken speedometer and damages shift cable within the engine compartment. Upon their return to address this newly arisen issues, their mishandling of the replacement of the outdrive water pump resulted in damage to critical parts such as the bellows, shift linkage and speedometer line. Instead of executing proper repairs, they opted for makeshift solutions, leaving my vessel in a precarious state. Their disregard for precision persisted during the subsequent disassembly and replacement of the outdrive, wherein they inadvertently snapped off the speedometer fitting and attempted an inept repair characterized by substandard craftsmanship. Consequently, my gauge ceased to function, and the newly installed shift cable malfunctioned, rendering the reverse gear inoperative and causing the engine to stall during shifting. The overall standard of their workmanship was deplorable, resulting in the creation of a highly unsafe vessel that now lies inoperative due to their incompetence. Even the task of servicing a modest Bayliner equipped with a Mercruiser inboard/outboard proved to be beyond their capabilities. Moreover, their brazen overcharging for incomplete and subpar work only served to compound my dissatisfaction. Michael Hood's lamentable lack of customer service skills and effective communication only served to exacerbate the situation, necessitating intervention from the company's owner. I am compelled to caution against entrusting Explorer Marine Services with any boat repairs and implore others to seek alternative service providers. The boat sits not repaired and still in pieces as they gave up trying to fix the problems in which their Busch league techs created. read more

If you own a boat and it is stored out of the water then you know the hassle and time it takes to tow the boat somewhere else for service or repairs. We had a small issue with our boat not starting and Explorer Marine sent Jacob out to our home and he quickly and efficiently fixed the issue right in our driveway! For years I've always towed the boat to some repair facility or service facility only to have to leave it there for a week or more to just get a simple thing fixed when I could have been on the water. I called Explorer Marine and set an appointment to get my marine generator checked out because it hadn't run for quite some time and wouldn't start. The mechanic was on time!!! And he had my generator running in about 15 minutes. Previously, I made appointment with mechanics that never showed. When the did get to the boat, they were unable to get the generator started. Long story short, I am extremely happy with the service I got from Explorer Marine today. I have already requested another visit to get some other items taken care of, I am considering hiring the for a quarterly or monthly service/maintenance so my boat will be ready to go when I am. Robert provides a great service at a reasonable price. I had a another diver prior to Robert but then changed Marinas and the former company no longer serviced that area. I let time slip by and then I called Downtime. They showed me the before and after video and I was both amazed and embarassed to see how bad it was when Downtime started. Robert sheepishly requested a small premium for what must have been a major unexpected effort to clean it up. It actually looked like a very healthy reef under there. Downtime restored order and continued to maintain it for about a year. I just sold the boat and Robert will start service on my new boat in a few weeks. He is probably happy to know this time he starts with a clean freshly painted bottom! I was impressed by their clear communications and dependable service. This is not so common these days. We contacted explorer marine for MANY repairs that were needed when we bought a used 45' yacht. They fixed vacuflush toilets, shower sumps and pumps, replaced batteries, and helped sort out a couple electrical questions. They were pretty quick to get it done, and did an excellent job. We're so happy to have a fully functioning boat. It was a really easy process. From Stacy on the initial contact, to Peter who seemed to coordinate, and then Andy who did most of the work . After getting a "free quote" because one of my drives was not engaging, I was charged $612 for diagnosis only for them to tell me they needed to take the boat out of the water so they could find out more (and charge me more). The invoice even had a line item for $115 to shutdown the battery banks and contact the owner. They charged me $5000 to haul the boat out and replace a propeller and they didn't even fix the engine problem. Couldn't give me a price up front for anything. It's a 32' boat, not a cruise ship. They then told me it would be over 20 grand to fix the outdrive and I told them to put it back in the water and got all the work done faster and cheaper from a real mechanic. I was looking for a vacuflush tech in san D. Google gave me their web page and phone number. Their web page states fee quote. Apparently this means they will quote a flat 2 hour rate to visit my boat to confirm what I am telling them is the issue. Now either the receptionist does not know the company policy or their web page is a typical bait-and-switch. I need my boat repaired, don't BS me - your credibility has one chance to be earned. Very poor communication about timeline and cost estimates (none), and a tech who did not have very basic knowledge about the system they were working on (propane). For instance: How high is a standard 30lbs tank pressurized to, where do the gauges go, what pressures range is a standard marine pressure gauge setup for, what is a two-stage regulator versus an automatic change-over regulator? This project ended up requiring significant supervision on my part to ensure that it was installed to basic safe standard. I also had to request that they stop performing related work that I specifically declined, specifically installing a solenoid that I had scheduled to do in conjunction with some electrical upgrades at a later date. It all turned out to be a lot of work and a lot of cost for a very simple job. read more

Explorer did a routine engine service on my boat while it was out of the water for bottom painting. They provided me with an outrageous bill which initially was for over 18 hours of labor. With help from the boat yard that had recommended their services, they reduced their bill. Even with the reduction, their bill was double the amount it should have been. So disappointing! read more

I had contacted Explorer Marine for service on my powerboat with a 5.7 engine inboard/outboard carburetor. Not starting and I explained the issues clearly, not the battery, I changed distributor rotor cover, plenty of gas, asked that they bring fuel separator. The service tech who came said he does not know much about carburetor engines and he usually does batteries starts on works on diesel. Well for $110 per hour plus travel, the service manager knew I did not have a diesel engine and he sent a diesel mechanic. The tech changed the fuel separator but it was clear he did not know how to troubleshoot the engine. He had to call his superior numerous times for troubleshooting suggestions. The tech did not even have a sparkplug wrench to check a plug I had to lend him my socket. After 2 hours, they said the carburetor had to be rebuilt which he removed and I took it to their suggested re-builder shop. I also mentioned to him that the up trim switch was not working. The tech spent over another hour checking the trim system and again called to supervisor who told him to jumper bypassing the solenoid directly to the motor. The motor worked so he said the solenoid was bad. Bottom line #1 I drop off and picked up carburetor to be rebuilt at their recommended shop for $220, the shop said the carburetor looked pretty good No moisture minor carbon build up. #2 picked up new solenoid. Explorer Marine sends second tech who was much better after requesting a different tech. He reinstalled carburetor and installed new spark plugs that I purchased. Engine still had same issues; he checked the distributor coil and said it was corroded and had to be replaced. I told him that I would change the coil and solenoid myself. I received an invoice from Explorer Marine for $ 1,398 all labor No Parts plus I paid additional $220 to have carburetor rebuilt and engine still having the same problem. I called the supervisor about the invoice and he agree to reduce it to $1,000. Which is still too high because the original problem was a bad distributor coil. Very simple fix which any good mechanic would have determine within the first hour. I have since called another Mechanic from Different Service Company he knew exactly what he was doing knows the MerCruiser engine inside out changed the distributor coil, engine runs Great Now. Also determined after 2 minutes of troubleshooting the trim switch on the throttle was bad, solenoid was fine and did not have to be replaced. The service manager from Explorer Marine also mentioned that they will only work on diesel engines in the future. Then why charge me $1,000 if your service tech does not understand engines with carburetors? Billed originally for 11.5 hours at $110 per hour. Never again, entire bill from Explorer Marine should have not exceed $600 with travel time. read more
