He knew exactly what I would want because he listened, shared his personal experiences, and asked me the right questions to get me there. Very disappointed in my service.... Mechanic was nice and completed the requested service but if your customer gives you a cover, please use it. The boat was very dirty and was clearly left outside for multiple days/ weeks and has burnt in dirt and rust marks on the plastic, tubes and seats. Some people use their dinghy's as their main boat so please respect that. No communication on timeline during the process. I was only called once while the boat was there for 2 months. I had to check in constantly to see what was going on. Please improve. read more

I first used DD to get my new Tohatsu motor started up for its break in period. They were fast, easy, and super helpful. About a year and a half later I had an issue with my carburetor and called for help. I spoke with Ash. He was very helpful and patient. Matter of fact, he helped me with questions via text for two solid days, answering all my questions, giving advice, and praise when I finally fixed the carburetor. Most of the time, businesses would just ignore you and tell you to come in. Thanks Ash! and thanks Dinghy Doctor. After purchasing a brand new Yamaha 4 stroke 25 horsepower motor, from the Dinghy Doctor which has since merged with Shelter Island Inflatables and changed their name, within a year of our purchase, my husband needs a minor warranty repair done and he's called them three times, left two voicemails, and waited on hold for over 30 minutes before he gave up. The service girl will not return calls, the parts department never has all the basic service items at one time I.E spark plugs oil filter fuel filter, gaskets so it takes multiple trips or orders to even tune up your own engine. It's been nearly two weeks since he left the first message and still hasnt gotten a return call back so we tried calling West Coast Marine on Morena Blvd. They answered on the first ring and said bring it right down, they will be getting our business from now on. read more

Hey, great service! 12' RIB /25 hp Yamaha with damage to lower end was in and out in 6 working days. John and staff co-ordinated with insurance company and had parts ordered and ready to go. They have a pick-up and delivery service that i took advantage of. My dinghy rides on bow cradle of 45' sport fisher so it was best for me to use their pickup/delivery. I knew going in that they can't usually repair paddle boards / inflatable Kayaks or whatever if it was a seam issue. I informed them I didn't know where the leak was, and was told I can bring it in for them to check. Never was I told the cost. Not even at drop off. I'm quoted 3 to 4 hours for the repair @ $170 / hour, so obviously it's not worth it to fix it. Then I'm forced to pay $85 which to me is unreasonable and should have been told to me via email when I was inquiring and at drop off. I'd of never come had I'd of know. $85 is A LOT for something going in the trash. I realize they have to pay their guys but c'mon. Not $85. My time is also valuable, so I wish I could have charged them for the 30 min I sat in their driveway waiting to checkout because the lady was late to work. read more

Tried to bring my dingy outboard in for service last week. The shop was closed during their regular business hours. I called in and left a message asking when it would be a good time to stop by. A week later I received a call from a nice young lady. She asked me why I needed to bring the engine in. I told her it needs to be tuned up. she then proceeded to ask a bunch of really random questions that didnt apply to small outboard engine service. I had to stop her and asked if its possible to bring the engine in and let them diagnosis and service at their leisure. She simply said no! She told me you will need an appointment to drop of a small 5 hp dingy motor. Im moving on to find a better option. I am also shopping for a new dingy within the next few months if anyone has recommendations for a good shop. read more

As much as you need a place for repairs I would avoid this place at any cost. 1. They are not helpful 2. The people I've encountered in sales and in repair are condescending and rude. 3. No one answers the phone and no one returns calls. I say this because I needed a repair and they gave me a song and dance about it. This is a business BADLY in need of a decent competitor. In July 2021 I bought a Honda 2.3 hp outboard motor from these crooks. They prepped the motor before I picked it up, and when I did the guy tried to charge my $180.00 more than I'd been quoted. Luckily I had a written quote, so I purchased it for $1199.00. At the time I just figured the guy had misspoke. Now, I don't think that it was an accident. (I just found out today that the only other Honda Marine dealer in San Diego County is Oceanside Marine Center, and that guy informed me that their price on this motor is $980.00. Nice, huh?) So I break it in properly, and I meticulously care for it, for example rinsing it with fresh water every time I take it out, keeping track of the small number of hours it's in use, and keeping a canvas cover on it. Despite all that, the thing stalled on me and wouldn't start. So I took it back to Dinghy Doctor, because it's on a five year warrantee. They said the tech would look at it and get back to me. My expectation was that it is under warranty, in like-new condition, and they would fix it free of charge... Well, not quite. Yesterday they sent me an invoice for $748.47 to do the repairs, claiming there was bad gas (Freakin' SHELL gas) and the warranty (natch) wouldn't cover it. After ripping me off for 200 bucks when I purchased it, they now want to charge me 2/3rds of what I BOUGHT the thing for to fix it "under warrantee." I took the motor back, and I'm having a private repair guy look at it for me. I hope he's honest. Meanwhile, I've contacted Honda Marine and apprised them of my problems with Dinghy Doctor, STRONGLY recommending they DROP them as certified Honda dealers. I will also be sending a letter, registered mail, to the CEO of Honda Marine, Edward Spurlock, to assure that he knows what kind of fraudulent operation is going on in Honda's name. read more

I can't tell if this is a cautionary tale about buying used dinghies, or a cautionary tale about buying used dinghies from the Dinghy Doctor, in San Diego. I'll just tell you my experience (see pics too), and you can decide what to think. When I first met Charlie (Charles), the new general manager, he seemed like a nice guy, and not deceptive at all. I had known the previous Dinghy Doctor owners (management), and so I had reservations about going back and doing business there. They had terrible customer service, and what I would consider shady business practices. They had many bad reviews, so I was relieved a little to see Charlie running things, and hoped they operated differently now. So I came in to purchase a used motor and dinghy early this past summer. I still had a used West Marine dinghy at home that was reliable, but I wanted one that had an inflatable keel and solid floor for better stability, etc. I mentioned that a couple of times to Charlie, so he showed me a small, used Zodiac dinghy. In the store, all parts of this dinghy were inflated, including the keel. It was sold "as is", without paddles or a bench seat. I presumed that "as is" meant that the Dinghy Doctor had checked it out, and was selling it in it's current "reliable" condition. Beware! Why they sell dinghies without seats or paddles is a mystery. When boaters trade in their used dinghies, do they not trade in the seats and paddles as well? So I bought a used Mercury 3.5 outboard motor and the Zodiac dinghy for a total of $900. Charlie and I rolled up the dinghy and put it in my car along with the motor. I thought it was odd it didn't have a seat or paddles, but I figured my old dinghy's seat and paddle would fit it. I was wrong. That's on me. But the worst was yet to come. Here's where my tale really turns south. I took this dinghy to my boat that same day, inflated it, and put it in the water. The next morning I discovered the inflatable keel was flat. I called Charlie and told him it wasn't holding air, and he said to bring it in and he would have a tech take a look at it. Since I had to go back and buy a seat that fit this particular used dinghy I brought it back in that day for them to check out. After several calls and several days, I went back in to check the Zodiac's status. I found it still rolled up in the store (I'm not sure they ever even checked it), and it was filthy dirty. Charlie said the tech checked it and it was fine. That I just needed to be carefull about putting on the inflatable keel's valve cap. The next day, same thing. The inflatable keel was flat. I tried several times to re-inflate and put the cap on really carefully. Same outcome. So I brought it back to the Dinghy Doctor, and they said the same thing. So I put it back in the water, and, without even using it, a week later the left pontoon was flat. (See wide shot of used Dinghy #1). At that point I called Charlie and told him I was bringing the dinghy back to him because it had never been reliable from day 1. Charlie seemed nice enough when I brought the dinghy back. He said he'd give me another used dinghy in its place, but that he couldn't give me my money back. He offered me another, larger, used West Marine dinghy that had just been traded in. (See Dinghy Doctor used dinghy #2 in store pics.) It was fully inflated when I saw it, but really dirty. Charlie walked me around it and said he usually looks at the seams on used dinghies as one of the ways to tell if it's in good shape. He said this one's seams look "...really good.") As part of the deal Charlie agreed to give me a seat and paddles. When I went back in to pick up used Dinghy, seat, and paddles, Charlie was nowhere around. The dinghy was clean. Me and another salesman scrounged around and found a seat that kind of fit, and two different colored paddles that were the right size. I really loved this dinghy (used dinghy #2), and cruised around Mission Bay a couple of days later with the used motor I had bought. But I noticed the upper part of the dinghy was really sticky and got dirty really fast. (Either the fabric had just gotten too old, or the Dinghy Doctor might have cleaned it using harsh chemicals like Acetone, which might have changed the chemical makeup of the surface.) About 3 weeks later, used Dinghy Doctor dinghy #2 was flat. (See wide shot of dinghy #2, and split seam pics.) So much for Charlie's "...look good" seams. And it was taking on water whenever I used it. I wanted to see if the dinghy's seams could be fixed, but Charlie wasn't returning my emails. So I called the only other dinghy place nearby, and after seeing these same pictures, they didn't think it was worth repairing. The repair costs would be almost what a new dinghy would cost. And so here endeth the lesson. Since you can't exactly take a used dinghy for a test drive like you can a car. Buyer beware. Especially if it's the Dinghy Doctor. read more

Despite the reviews, someone on FB said this place was a lot different now. Well, they were not able to fix my Hyperion dinghy seams or just didn't want to. Took a week to actually look at it. Then was told they couldn't find a model number and therefor couldn't fix it. When I asked if they work on old dinghy's and fix seams in them, they quoted a price of $800.00 I Was forced to use aqua seal and flex seal for the bottom. I own a 22ft cc with a 150 Honda outboard. I had the check engine light come on and had to bring it as well as get the 100 hr service. At first there was a small miscommunication due to the COVID-19 mess we are in. But Brian reached out and took care of it. As for the repairs it turns out there was a warranty issue with Honda and they took it up with Honda gave me daily updates and made the process painless and easy. They got me back on the water in no time. The service was taken care of they took it out on a sea trial to ensure it ran good, they washed it up and go it back to me. Going to the dinghy doctor was the biggest financial mistake I've made in my life. The owners, Jo and Brian, don't deserve the title and respect associated with being business owners. I'm utterly shocked at their actions, lack of honesty, and respect to the law. I'm a naval officer stationed in San Diego, CA. I chose to use the dinghy doctor to tune up my used boat after purchasing it. Extremely long story short: worst company I have ever dealt with. I won a lawsuit in court against them due to business fraud (they charged me thousands of dollars in parts they never actually replaced, and I had to pay someone else to actually do work), and then, even after a legal judgement, refused to pay. I've never been to court prior to this, or even had a speeding ticket for that matter, but I felt obligated to sue them due to their malicious acts. This business is an absolute disgrace to the United States, the American dream of owning a business, and to any person who has a sense of integrity. Stay far, far away. read more

This review is primarily for one of the sales staff at Dinghy Doctor versus the company. Not to say that I would give the company any bad marks, but I wanted to write this to recognize the service and fine salesmanship I received from Jean Christophe (French). As many of us have experienced during these covid times, the supply lines have been disrupted beyond imagination and in almost every category of merchandise. This is especially true for outboard motors. I purchased a rigid inflatable from Jean in January, and after a few months of waiting for my motor, I finally decided to just pick up my boat and attempt to locate a used or new motor elsewhere. Still today, 4 months later, I am just limping along with a used, underpowered outboard. Although Jean couldn't provide the motor I originally ordered, I know that he worked as hard as possible to get it to me, however his hands were tied by circumstances beyond his control. I know that when inventories replenish all will be as it was before, and I would recommend that anyone in the market for an inflatable boat of any kind visit Dinghy Doctor and ask for Jean Christophe! read more

Dropped my engine and raft off here a year and a half ago. Was told they never got back to me because of Covid opening and closing, that they emailed me an estimate which I never received. Quoted me at $700 to reseal the raft, and around $475 to do some light engine work. Talked to them about a possible trade in or a purchase plan for another raft, waited another three months to hear back after that. Incredibly hard to get a hold of, and after all of the back and forth told me they don't do trade ins any longer. Told me they would wave the diagnostic fee. I asked if I could buy parts, they said they would have to check, got another diagnostic done and I'm picking up the parts after A YEAR to do the work myself plus paying for the same diagnostic they performed a year prior. What a waste of time and a complete joke. This place is going to lose my business fast, and any recommendations here on out. Total passing the buck on previous employees. Picking up my stuff this Friday after I'm cleared from Covid, hope they don't take it out on my gear writing a review beforehand. read more

Bought a new 9 foot Achilles dinghy and E propulsion electric motor in April. When it was delivered we noticed a small defect in the inflation port and Jean agreed to replace the dinghy and brought us a brand new one out of the box within days. We purchased our original Achilles inflatable and outboard from The Dinghy Doctor when they were located off Scott Street. They provided cheerful, helpful service and did the first servicing on the outboard. In 2020, a slow leak was noted in the left tube. It took a year before we could get the dinghy into the shop off Kurtz Street in for repair, due to the COVID pandemic and the absence of repair personnel. Finally, in April, 2021 the dinghy was accepted for repair. By mid-July no follow-up had been heard from Julia regarding the status of the repair. The dinghy was ready for pick-up and was claimed to be repaired. Due to the pandemic, we didn't have an opportunity to test the repair until early 2022. The left tube in question, while able to hold air for a longer period of time than before the repair, still loses pressure over time, while the right tube continues to hold pressure without a problem. In addition to the repairs we paid The Dinghy Doctor, we also took the opportunity to replace all the valve 'O'-rings, along with one new valve installation. While this business has a good inventory of inflatables and motors, I would not recommend them for after sales service or repair. The workmanship is marginal and is not done in a timely manner. The friendliness and professionalism of the original owners is no longer a trademark of this establishment. It seems to be run as a hobby more than a serious marine business. read more

Our search for a RIB Tender boat began several months ago. Never having had one we were novices at everything about them. We had certain requirements and limitations in mind for the boat to fit our needs. Our search started locally in San Diego and expanded to the Orange County area. We settled on doing business locally with The Dinghy Doctor. The choices were either a fiberglass hull or aluminum. Because the boat was to remain in the water full time, Dinghy Doctor, who sells both fiberglass and aluminum, strongly recommended fiberglass. We were interested in a specific size boat to fit into our slip and an open helm to allow plenty of leg room for driver and passenger. Jean Worth, the sales manager, helped us find the right boat size, motor, and located the perfect helm for our needs. Due to Covid, the components took longer than normal to obtain but we were updated all along the way. Because of Covid there were several delays in getting the boat registered that frustrated us. Jean personally stepped in and walked the paperwork through the process so we had the completed registration within a couple of days! During the break-in period we had noticed that the performance of the dinghy didn't seem right and discussed the issues with Jean. In spite of their busy schedule, Jean stepped up and immediately began the process to narrow down the possible reasons for the less than perfect performance. Within a short time he and the staff at Dinghy Doctor determined solutions that wound up being the perfect fix. The changes were made and the boat was returned to us promptly. The boat performed beyond our wildest dreams and has been an absolute blast to drive and cruise around the bay in! Jean Worth went above and beyond all of our expectations in resolving the issues we experienced. He personally has redefined the term "customer service" to the highest standard we have ever experienced. In short, Dinghy Doctor, Jean the Sales Manager and the entire staff are top notch and truly care about your boating experience. My first time to see the Doctor and I did not need an appointment. After hearing good and some not so good I went there because they had the past Yamaha 40HP in San Diego for my inflatable. The quote was fair and I was impressed by how many boats were there for service. I spoke to the technicians in the shop and it was clear that they knew what they were doing. I dealt with Jean and Austin, very professional and knowledgeable. We had an agreement of the price and labor and they GOT MY BOAT IN AND DONE THE NEXT DAY!!!! After 20 years with the same mechanic I am glad that I found the Doctor. Brought my boat in to patch some holes and for a few repairs and after Joe and I looked at it we decided to have there techs reglue the all the components on the tube and make it whole again. Another Shelter Island rip-off! Let me join the chorus of one-star reviews in Yelp. To anyone considering the use of Dinghy Doctor for dinghy repair, you might want to look elsewhere. After authorizing my inflatable to be repaired (for an agreed-to amount of $300), I expected it to be completely repaired. Instead, it was about halfway done, and work performed was pretty weak. The maker of my 2004 inflatable issued a recall on the model and year because of defective nylon webbing which degraded prematurely in direct sunlight. Upon consultation, I was informed that the unit was no longer under warranty and that it would cost almost $300 parts and labor to repair it. I agreed. The repairs they decided to make were D-rings placed over old foundations, instead of removing old fixtures and mounting the new D-rings on the base hypalon. Additionally, there were several sun-damaged nylon straps which they didn't bother to replace. Two of them tore immediately after first use after picking the unit up from the shop. The Dinghy Doctor charges an hourly labor rate and for materials. However, for the almost $300 I paid, I would have expected more, or at least a phone call from them saying, "Hey, in order for us to do it right, it'll cost 100 bucks more." Instead, I waited 3 weeks only to pick the unit up with a half-assed repair job. Their response to my complaint was equally dissatisfactory, saying effectively, "Oh, what a pity the other straps failed!" Additionally, the owner insinuated that I was being given a great deal. Since this business has been a retailer for my dinghy brand for years, they were aware of the issues with the defective materials and at the very least should have contacted me to seek input on what it would take to repair the unit to my satisfaction. I pride myself in good marine equipment maintenance and in supporting local small businesses like The Dinghy Doctor. Therefore, I don't think it is too much to ask this outfit to make a decent repair when a local boater spends good money on it - or at least consult the customer to determine successful repair expectations. Yet another Shelter Island business has swindled me for some more of my money. It really takes the pleasure out of pleasure boating. read more

First - My 4 hp outboard STILL doesn't run and this is after TWO repairs! The first time I took it in I spent $280 for a new internal fuel tank and was told that everything ran fine. When I got it home, guess what..? It Didn't run! So, I took it back and was told I needed a new carburetor. Why wasn't this discovered the first time? I seriously question if they even run the things before they give it back to you. Anyways, got the engine back home after the second repair and it still won't start. Second complaint - Store hours are horrible seeing as they close at 5 pm, they aren't open on Mondays, AND they close at 3 pm on Saturday. This should've been my first sign. What "shop" closes at 5 pm when people typically don't even get of work until 5....? Third issue - Communication is seriously lacking. I had the motor there for two weeks without even a phone call. I had to call twice just to figure out what was going on. Brian communicated pretty well and thanks for that. However, the front desk needs some help with manors. Fourth - Even after all of the issues I had with this company and 1 1/2 months of repairs, I was still kind to these people. Do you think they returned the kindness? No! I've spent nearly $400 total for repairs that weren't effective and I have no idea why they gave me such an attitude. I wish this would have worked out and I wish my motor ran, but I can't possibly go through this for the third time. I have no interest in taking it back because they are just going to charge me $90 an hour to misdiagnose and possibly "fix" the engine. I'm taking it to a different shop and anyone who reads this should consider a different place as well. read more

So...I used to dread coming here as I was usually ignored or given the brush-off/confused look. But alas, on yet another dread inspired trip looking for answers to glue and transducer questions, I was actually greeted by an employee at the door. He listened to my question and traded me off to another employee who had more experience with my questions. Even considering the current situation, stay-at-home, lack of business, or low staffing, I had an excellent experience with what I would qualify as an exceptional team at the Dinghy Doctor. It was a simple Honda outboard repair and servicing and I returned to their location since I had bought it there a few years ago. All required, not extra unnecessary maintenance, was performed on time, with ample technical briefing about what had to be done, together with a proof of defective parts. I also appreciated some good advice about basic care of the motor in order to avoid costly repairs in the future. But $300 is all I paid after using the outboard for over 6 years and it was well worth the cost of knowing in can expect good reliability in years to come. Friendly, approachable, dedicated group of fine technicians, a pleasure to do business with them. 5 stars, well deserved. read more

Our call was returned promptly. Boat was picked up in a few days. Reviewed the work to be done, solution discussed, a diagonal patch on the underside instead of perpendicular to last longer than the last patch. So far so good, will update when work is done. They're very busy. read more

AVOID. THE ABSOLUTE WORST. I just got off the phone "Jo" from this company. Someone had given me their business card, which says it services outboard motors. She was absolutely the most clueless person and rudest person ever. I am not boat expert, but I called and said that I have what I believe to be a clutch dog problem. She said "clutch daw?" I said "Clutch dog." She acted like she had never heard of this, and she is the person listed on the business card. Then I suggested that maybe I bring in the boat. She said "What kind?" I said it is a Procraft 200 Combo. She said "Procaf?" I said "no, Procraft." She said that she had never heard of it. At that point I told her that I don't want her working on my Procraft boat if she has never heard of a Procraft. AVOID this place. The other reviews are right. And I'm going to tell the person that referred me to stop referring these people. read more
