Walk on by. Not the company they were under their new ownership. I gave old McDowell's a 5 star…read morerating. I recently brought a rug in that I have brought in to another cleaner in Boston 2X and Old McDowell's 1x (all 3 times very dirty and it came out looking brand new. So beautiful, outstanding transformation, is how I would describe it. I Just had this same rug done by under new management McDowell's and the back of it is gray almost and the color much darker in color like the water they washed it with was gray/black and dirty and it was not well rinsed. It's improved, definitely shows some sign of cleaning, but the color of the rug is MUCH darker and has a grey cast. It's ugly. This was nor washed well. I can't tell you how beautiful it came out the 2x in Boston and the best of all times when old McDowells did it. S ame rug. It was far less dirty t time then those other 3. I don't know what was done here, but truly disappointed, that my rug is now a different color and looks grey, like they dipped and washed it in filthy water. this was not washed in clean water and was not rinsed enough times. I had heard negative things from people about the new ownership, so held off on cleaning this as I figured they would get their sea legs. Apparently, not so. This is a rug that when properly cleaned is very light and lovely and really brightens up and is much lighter, it has NEVER HAD A GRAY UNDERSIDE. I don't know what you did but it looks awful. really yucky. Rug was not even wrapped, something other co's did. I think i could have dragged this out on my parking pad and cleaned it more effectively.

BEWARE. The McDowell's Rug Cleaners established in 1835 is no longer in business. Several years…read moreago Its name was bought out by a local rug dealer that instead sends out cleaning to an evidently less-competent processor. It ruined the fine Chinese silk rug I warily brought in after decades of relying on McDowell's for all my orientals. Not only is its sheen now obliterated by overly-harsh treatment, but stains and soiling remain, Overall the surface is brighter. To be fair, at drop-off the dealer advised that a rug so soiled might well have to go out again to a second firm for more thorough cleaning. I declined, knowing that the McDowells l knew always succeeded in restoring pieces in similar condition. Its expert specialists performed all the work themselves, adding relatively little cost when extra care was necessary. At pickup the dealer attempted to stuff the bound rug into my arms without display. Upon inspection I expressed displeasure with the outcome. He wryly noted, "Silk rugs are meant to be hung on the wall." Wish I had asked, "Then why do they have two fringes?"
