We had cataract surgery. First, it's expensive. If you can afford an international vacation - say for a week - skip it when you need your cataracts removed. That will just about cover the cost. I was referred to this office by my PCP,she described them as highly skilled ophthalmologists. Honestly, I am not a doctor to decide if one doctor is more skilled than another,but I am disappointed as a customer. Place is very overcrowded,they are not understaffed though. Office is not modern,rather crying for remodeling. Now,to the worst part. I never could imagine that ophthalmology visits are not results in prescription for glasses. They changed my insurance maximum allowed cost,but asked for 75 dollars just to give me script. Doctor Zaver was nice and competent,at least on my opinion. You'll love this! I've been going to Dr Egan for years, and I can't complain about the quality of his service. But after my last visit, the office called as I was driving away to tell me some devastating news: they no longer accept my insurance (CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield) and I will be balance billed for my visit. They explained that they meant to call me before my appointment, but never got around to it. So I'll see a $210 bill for the balance after my co-pay. I offered to pay half, since, while I did sign a document to cover any costs that my insurance doesn't, they could have told me when I signed in and paid my co-pay that they no longer accepted CareFirst. They refused and said that I'd receive a bill. I explained that I wouldn't be able to cover it until my next paycheck, and would the office reconsider their position? Not only was the answer "no," but I received my bill today and they had added other changes so that it's now over $300. I guess the office realizes that I'm not coming back, so they will get what they can out of me. read more

Thank you Dr. Ahmed to make me feel comfortable me being a scared patient surrounded by all these weird and big machines. You explained me what I needed to know and even called me when I left message to you with additional questions. The whole visit was a breeze and fully explanatory: who really wants to spend long time at the doctors office, right? The girls at the front desk can be more friendly, they should understand, that most of the patients are scared and some "cheer" up would not hurt. The patient is not a number. We are humans. In doctors office you do not sell hamburgers. And would have a suggestion: instead of calling patients by last name I would recommend to give to the patient number and call them by number or at least by first name. Like: Ms. Jane? how does that sound? I jumped about two feet up when the nurse shouted my last name "B..."!!!. But Dr. Ahmed made up for them. Was on my second visit with him and was treated like an old friend who is asking many questions and he had the answers. Actually funny, me being half a century older, listening like a pupil. Just maybe next time do not talk so quick, an old lady is not that quick. Old lady need to digest bit slower all the info :). I couldn't even meet dr Schwartz although I was on time. I had called the Mclean office to make my appointment, I confirmed it, so It was logical that the location was in McLean on Wednesday morning. Hellllohoho! It would have been too easy. Much too easy. I was told that the appointment was in Reston. Nobody ever mentioned Reston to me. I asked for a rescheduled appointment before the end of the week, even with another ophthalmologist of the group. It was urgent. I've been using this practice for years and have always been satisfied with Dr. Schwartz and Dr. Egan. The receptionist staff at the McLean office seems to have a lot of turnover, so there competence varies from year to year. The assistants who do the preliminary exam can be very officious, like their counterparts in other doctor's offices. Who knows why. But once Schwartrz comes in, you are in good hands. Recommend the Reston office over the one in McLean based on my experience with their respective staffs. read more

With two convenient locations, this practice is efficient. The staff is overall friendly and helpful. They have a neuro-ophthalmologist, glaucoma specialist, and two general ophthalmologist. One being a new doctor on board he is able to bring the latest technics for patients undergoing or thinking about undergoing cataract surgery. Dr. Ahmed is great with the patients and very thorough with his exams. But don't think that's what he specializes in cataracts. He also fits for contacts, glasses, and mostly everything your eyes might need. Also, the technicians are sweet, friendly and explanatory on what they are doing. It was recommended by my respected physician to see Dr. Egan after I had a MRI that discovered a optical problem in my eyes. After waiting over a month for my neuro-ophthalmology appointment my condition was not addressed with in the 2 hours I waited in the exam room. Instead, sporadically within a 20 minute window went through what strength eye glasses I should have. Even then questions were not answered. Im sure Dr. Egan is a fine doctor, I trust my doctors recommendation only possibly this doctor terribly overbooked and it hurts the quality of care for his patients. I don't know what I have been charged for. I have to find another doctor for an actual exam before my eyes get worse. read more

On my first visit to Dr.Egan, I felt he was professional and did a thorough job of examining my eyes and optic nerves. On my second visit, I had the exact opposite experience. I sat in the reception area for 55 minutes and was never called back. Every other patient went back except me. The TWO receptionists monitoring the desk never said one word to me or acknowledged my happy self patiently waiting. After approaching the desk to see what the delay was, guess what I was told? DR, EGAN HAD LEFT FOR THE DAY!!!! Yes, I was stood up by a doctor!! I told the one receptionist that I wanted to be refunded for MY TIME! I get so tired of doctors having the customer sit and wait 1-3 hours for them! I understand emergencies come up, but plan for them! Space your darn appointments out and stop being greedy! But in this instance, it wasn't the doctor that failed me, but his staff. A staff can make or break a doctor/business. They are the offensive line and they blocked me from seeing the doctor. In this case, they fumbled because I will not be back. How do you leave your one and only customer in the waiting area just sitting! I refuse to frequent a business with such poor service. I don't care if they were willing to get me in again without waiting. They need to care about the fact that my happy butt sat there and was totally ignored by the incompetent staff. The staff should have been checking to see why I was still sitting there. If all you can do is apologize for me sitting an hour during my work day it's NOT enough.
