I was recommended to Dr J to have cataract surgery. During the consult, Dr J highly recommended the expensive touric lens (2,000.00 each) in addition to the cataract surgery to improve my sight. I was expecting to not have to wear glasses for distance. Not only do I wear glasses all the time now but I have a prism in my Rx to correct double vision at night. I knew something might go wrong when I heard chatter about Chipotle's During The Surgery!! I am so very disappointed in my experience with Dr. Josephson. read more

I visited this office for a routine eye exam to update my glasses and contacts after noticing some mild blurriness. During the appointment, I was told I might have glaucoma and was given a significantly stronger prescription than I'd ever had before. This led to considerable stress, costly follow-up tests, and missed work to attend testing appointments for possible glaucoma. Given my age (24 years old at the time) the possible diagnosis seemed very unlikely and when questioning the doctor on why she supported this diagnosis she provided little to no information on why these follow ups were needed and all these follow up tests resulted with no clear answers or improvements in my vision. Because the diagnosis seemed questionable, I sought second and third opinions from two other eye surgeons as well as an optometrist at Costco. Every single one of them confirmed that my eyes are completely healthy and that the prescription I received here was incorrect and higher than I needed but I wasn't given even remotely similar to the actual corrections needed for my eyes to see well with glasses. The eye tech assigned could not properly take my eye pressure and provided poor estimates which lead to more stress and incorrect numbers. Once I was properly re-tested elsewhere, my new prescription finally provided clear vision. Based on my experience here, I would never recommend this practice. It's extremely concerning that they also perform surgeries given the inaccuracy I experienced with something as basic as a vision exam and continuous incorrect information. You're better off going to Costcos for the basic eye exams and prescription than going here. read more

I recently had Light Adjustable Lenses (LAL) cataract surgery and subsequent follow-on management at Eye Specialists and Surgeons of Northern Virginia (ESSNVA). I can confirm I received the best health care experience from initial visits to final appointments over 3 months. Dr. Pham was my surgeon and Dr. Stark was my after surgery care provider. Both Doctor Pham and Doctor Stark provided me with outstanding care, communication, clinical expertise and very personal health management throughout the process. The supporting staffs, surgery center, follow-on care infrastructure is the best I have experienced - with NO exceptions. The cost of premium Intra Ocular Lens replacement is quite manageable with very favorable financing options fully administered by the office staff. A quick ROI analysis clearly shows the care, facilities use, Doctor and staff time attention and final results of outstanding vision results is extremely positive. I have had cataract surgery and regula vision checkups for 7 years but now that I need corrective lenses again the prescription written for me is unusable I have called three times and each time I have been told that someone from the office will get back to me. It doesn't happen and I still have an unusable prescription and no improved vision. A 77 year old man deserves better. read more

Don't buy anything like eye masks etc. They charge you twice then when you send them a screen shot of the duplicate charge Diana the Office Manager states you must call your bank three way her in on the call and still argues that you were only charged once and refuses to refund you for the duplicate charge! Who does that especially wanting to speak to a client's financial institution not to mention that she just flat out refused it could be an error on their part! read more

Whatever you do, DO NOT go to Dr. Prema Modak at Eye Specialists & Surgeons of Northern Virginia. I saw her for a small stye. She was so rude, rushed, and had a horrible bedside manner. She YANKED my eyelid up by my eyelashes and pulled them all out, instead of gently lifting my eyelid like any normal person, much less an ophthalmologist. Bc of that, my eye swelled up massively. See the picture of my eye in the pictures section of this page. I asked for antibiotics bc I had to travel and she refused. She insisted I try some bs gel first even though I was traveling in 3 days. The gel she gave me from her office also had been opened; I'm not putting something in my eye that wasn't sealed and then gave me attitude when I asked to just get the gel at the pharmacy. Shocker, the gel did nothing and I had to go to another doc to get an antibiotic which knocked it out in a day. read more

Dr Jesephson reached out to me yesterday and explained in detail at how his practice has run and processed the claims with an outsourcing billing company. Since the billing is my main complaint, I am editing the review. First and foremost, Dr Jesephson has good memory, which I can sense from how he described my husband's difficult eye during the surgery, given he has performed countless surgeries. Also, Dr J is very patient when he took the time explaining the situation to me. Dr J said the billing part of his practice is outsourcing and it never has forwarded any patients' complaints to him. He told me it is hard to find a good billing company and in fact, this is his 3rd one, and he wishes he can have a better one. As far as " why he did not bill Aetna our insurance company for the artificial lens my husband was implanted ", his answer was " insurance companies haven't provided a code for that , so most of patients, after they have selected the lens, have to prepay it as an out-of-pocket expenses, before the surgery ". He said this is how every eye surgeon does in the area. Conclusion: I am still confused at one part, which Dr J didn't explain. That is why we have to pay two premiums for one lens ?? We not only prepaid 3k to the surgeon's, also we prepaid another 1k to Surgical Center, which claimed the artificial lens husband used was solely purchased by them. Surgery was completed 2 months ago, so were the insurance claims. Even though we are fully covered with Aetna Health, we have shelled out an extra $4000 for husband's one eye surgery. Dr Josephson is truly skilled but the office management is dreadful. I have waited over a hour just to get in a room on multiple visits. It would be nice if they could try and call their patients when they know they are running over an hour behind. Patients time is not valued. Front desk staff not welcoming and friendly but just doing the job. Billing is shady. Check your insurance coverage for yourself- don't rely on them to have your best in mind. Again, I chose this place for the highly skilled surgeon for my cornea transplants. I just have to suffer through the rest of the office. read more

Both of my parents had their eye correction surgeries with Dr. Josephson. I enjoyed my time in the waiting room enjoying fancy hot beverages, clean, welcoming, and pleasant. But more importantly, I knew he was taking the very best care of my parents, answering their many questions, making sure they felt comfortable, alleviating anxieties, and thankfully performing the procedure smoothly without incident. Patient beware.... I needed cataract replacement Sx. I had no Insurance at the time, and was informed that it would cost $6 K + out of pocket. I fortunately found a job, obtained Medical Insurance, returned to Eye Specialists of Fairfax, and scheduled my Sx. I later find out that they charged my Insurance provider $12K, so with my Co-Pay, etc. I still paid $6 K +. Then a month later, I get another bill on top of the $6 K for another $1 K + ?. I had a final check-up appointment post Sx, and they wanted me to pay another $45 for a check-in visit, which should have been part of the post-op. I was informed that since my final Appt. was 90 days post Sx, I had to pay the additional $45. Eye Specialists made the Appt., not me ?. I collected my Insurance info and DL back, and said NO THANKS, cancel my Appt. My eye is still not 100%. Going to another Ophthalmologist. For the record, the Doctor was great, its the shame billing that everyone needs to be aware of. read more

I can not say enough good things about Dr. Erin Ong, who provided so much care and compassion for my wife during and after her difficult cataract operations. My wife was not a model patient, refusing to follow Dr. Ong's instructions. She had procrastinated in getting this surgery, so the cataracts were thick, requiring the laser assisted surgery. Dr. Ong has provided multiple follow up visits to ensure a best possible outcome of the surgery. read more

My Feedback is primarily with the office and the office staff not the surgeon. My surgeon Dr. Pham has been nothing but professional and understanding however his staff in his office has been the polar opposite. I am curious if the doctors understand the poor treatment of their patients by their office staff. The office staff will go to unethical methods to squeeze every penny they can out of their patients. The most frustrating part of my interaction with the staff is that they will speak over me and get visibly angry in their tone and not listen to a word of my concern. example one: I scheduled an initial consultation with the eye surgeon at one location and then I received a call from their office that I required a second consultation because the first location did not have all of the adequate equipment. This resulted in me paying two separate copayments. This could've easily been explained on my initial phone call and I could've been sent to the correct location. example Two: I was scheduled my surgery and attended the date and time as directed however I disclosed to the doctor that eat a bagel that morning. I was not made aware that I was prohibited from eating the day of my surgery and the cataract procedure was canceled. I was told by the surgeon that his office we get in touch with me to reschedule, two months later no one got ahold of me. I then initiated contact with the office and they required that I spend an additional $350 to schedule an appointment even though I had already paid $350 for the initial appointment. example 3: I have made multiple visits for exams with this office and what their staff told me and what the doctor advised me often contradict. Example I had my eyes dilated for an examination I then went to a second examination and they were forcing me to have my eyes dilated again even though the surgeon said it was not necessary. This was an issue because I had scheduled an out of state drive after my appointment with the assumption I would not have my a eyes dilated. When I asked to speak with the doctor directly he assured me them ice did not need to be dilated and the pushy nurse just walked away. Like I said the surgeon Dr. Pham has been wonderful however his office has been equally awful in their treatment with me. (with the exception of Gladys who has been a gem) read more

Went for my yearly eye exam they told me I have to make another appointment to get a prescription for my glasses. What is the point of my appointment? To check my eyes and vision. Two trips, two appointments, two charges which use to be done with one visit. Not good for the disabled and elderly. Customer service is dead. read more

In all my years of receiving eye care, I have never experienced the kind of care and customer service here. One star is generous but accounting for a few things done well, although the overall experience will never bring me back here even if I needed a surgeon. I can't write a review for Dr. Josephson because I was not allowed to see him. His front desk staff routed me away from getting an appointment even though I had been referred to him by another optometrist. So, what did the office staff do instead? Routed me to the optometrist who was not so professional nor skilled enough to help me. And, despite not having the outcome I should have had along with follow up to request a refund, I was not refunded the huge chunk of change I paid for leaving with nothing usable. Meaning they did not correct my vision and were not even interested in getting it right. I did not even receive the paltry partial refund they said they were going to offer. Even more shocking were some comments said to me by the optometrist and office manager. Not only did the comments convey bias, they were unprofessional and should never be said to a patient no matter what either of them may be thinking. Overall: ineffective care (optometrist could not do what all the many optometrists before and after her could successfully do) and office staff needs retraining in customer service...or extensive training in customer service to execute professionally 100% of the time. Bottom line: I left feeling that all they wanted was my money (which they got and refused to let go) and didn't care about whether my needs were met. I had to go to another eye care team that was not only self-determined to get things right without even knowing about my previous situation, but they actually did leaps and bounds better on the first try than Dr. Josephson's optometrist and office did. read more

I am a recent patient of Dr. Josephson's having had cataracts in both eyes and Fuch's Corneal Dystrophy, I am so thankful that my regular eye doctor sent me to Eye Surgeons and Specialists of Northern VA. The staff is always knowledgeable, courteous, and very helpful. I am of an age where I see quite a few doctor's offices and the office staff here is head and shoulders above the rest. When I first came to see Dr. Josephson, I was filled with anxiety at the prospect of four eye surgeries. Ever hold in a sneeze so you don't wake the dead? Well stop that! I did exactly that. Held in a sneeze and I ruptured a vein in my eye. This is a true story! I woke and looked like a monster in the mirror with a blood red eye. After listening to everyone asking "eeww what happened to your eye" I googled it. Never google this sort of stuff. I immediately called the office (found via Yelp) and was seen the following day. The office is hard to find and a bit small but the staff and the doctor were all great. The doctor is so caring and answered all my questions. Very personable as well as professional. My eye issue went away within a few days. I will go back next year for my yearly exam. I'm writing this review on behalf of my father in-law who had eye surgery done with Dr. Josephson. Now let me start by telling you just how much of a skeptic my father in law is with "newfangled surgical technology" - he began to develop cataracts in both eyes. After doing some research and settling on Dr. Josephson, he insisted on only having one of his eyes done "just in case." Well I'll tell you, coming out of the experience he said that Dr. Josephson was incredible - my father being a tenured senior professor of electrical engineering for many decades needs to understand EXACTLY how things work and Dr. Josephson not only laid out how things work in great detail with the equipment, the surgery and the various types of lens replacements, he also walked him through all of the options he had on the table and the pros and cons of each. Once they settled on the perfect lens for my father in-law, they set a time for the surgery and it went as smoothly as is possible. Dr. Josephson's bedside manner was even better than his transparency and provision of information. Another funny story: Both dr. Josephson and myself are named John - well Dr. Josephson gave my father in-law a call following up after the surgery and was so genuine in concern for my father in-law (and apparently sounds much like me on the phone) that he thought it was me, and had a 15 minute conversation with Dr. Josephson before he realized it was his doctor. While he was incredibly embarrassed, he couldn't believe how genuinely interested Dr. Josephson was in his well being. The result of the surgery was incredible returning perfect, natural sight, enough that my father in law has gone back to night driving and the like with completely confidence and that's with just one eye! It goes without saying that the father in-law is planning on getting the other eye done the first chance he gets! In short, you won't find a better eye doctor/surgeon, not just in this area. For brevity I'll refer to Dr. John Josephson as Dr. J and I won't get into the details for which I came to visit him for the first time. I intend to present in this discourse an accurate representation of the quality, reliability, and fluency with which Dr. J conducts his practice. I have had a series of exhausting experiences with doctors who were less than able to ascertain the cause and nature of my ailment. What's worse is that they (not Dr. J yet, giving background here) were resigned to their duty--no their obligation--to wholeheartedly investigate the source of my own medical misfortunes. I'd get simple pats on the back and a reiterative statement of what I had described as the problem in the first place...a mere regurgitation of my predicament. I had all but lost hope with the medical world and then I went to see Dr. J--and hadn't even read any reviews. Dr. J is the standard against which one measures excellence in every category that one evaluates a doctor. He was friendly, genuine, concerned, invested in helping me, efficient, concise in his communication, tactful, and of course superior in his expertise. I left his office with peace of mind knowing that he adeptly discerned the nature of my ailment and prescribed not medicine, but rather a cure comprised of a series of methods and applicants to rid me of this misfortune. Recently had to have eye surgery and I was referred to ESSNV by my regular eye doctor , my first consult was at the beginning of July , the staff were friendly and caring.The surgeon Dr John josephson was very informative about my options , both my wife and myself were very impressed with his knowledge and level of care for us . Day of surgery , later that month , the surgery center team were equally caring, made me feel very comfortable and informed me of everything that would take place , the surgery was very smooth , and much to my amazement, Dr josephson called me later that evening to see how I was feeling and ask if I had any questions .
