So like many other people who turn to alternative medicine, I feel like western "medicine" has failed me. I have a slew of different symptoms that my drs have all blamed on stress since my bloodwork comes back relatively normal. None of these drs have been able to help me with my symptoms. In addition to looking at your tongue and listening to your pulse and in my case a very long list of symptoms, pictures of the eye are also taken and read. After looking at my eye Zhicheng started asking about symptoms I hadn't even thought to mention, it was truly amazing. Zhicheng identified my systems that needed help and explained how they paired with my symptoms, then told me he knew exactly how to treat me to get me feeling better. It was SO COOL watching him craft my tea blend. Jars and jars of roots and herbs line the shelves and he just plucked ones down and measured and made me a 9 day supply. As the other reviews mention and Zhicheng did warn me too...the taste is quite strong. When making the tea it actually smells sweet and earthy, but it looks like pond water and will definitely give you an appreciation for black coffee, because this is about 20x more bitter and potent. Dr. Zhi has been a huge help to me. I had a stroke 3 months before I started seeing him and after having prescribed an herbal concoction based on my consultation with him, about two weeks later, my circulation improved, I stopped feeling liquid in my back and my voice was no longer faint; I felt stronger. One suggestion is if you want him to do an eye diagnosis, it's best that you tell him thats what you want, upfront because if he can gather all the information he needs by his consultation with you, then he will not feel the need to do the eye diagnosis. Dr.Z and his father the elder Dr.Z are two of the best doctors I have ever had the chance to work with. The elder Dr.Z whom I address as "Grandfather" as a sign of respect has authored two books on his technique for diagnosing maladies in patients. I have worked with other acupuncturists and TCM doctors over the past 15 years and understand that the "art" of this medical practice is diagnosing a person who comes in feeling off or sick. Traditionally, a doctor takes pulses, examines a patients tongue and listens to what a patient has to say is wrong which is a great help in making a diagnosis Dr. Z does this as well but additionally with Dr.Z's technique of examining in detail the eyes of their patients a diagnoses can be made that is very accurate. This is not Iridology- an evidence based method practiced by a Hungarian physician in the 1900's. Dr. Z's examines the entire eye and the various patterns of veins and inflammation in the whites which is a tell tail signature of maladies and energy in-balances. Once a patients eyes are examined via close up photography and viewed on a TV monitor Dr.Z formulates an herbal remedy, a tea to be brewed and drank over a 7 day period. Herbal medicine is the highest form of medical practice in Chinese medicine and dates back 2500-3000 years. This is a huge amount of accumulated knowledge. If you're into traditional Chinese medicine like acupuncture, you might want to give this place a try. My friend and I have been going here about a month and enjoy getting our weekly herbal tea/medicine. Dr. Z and his father run this very informal hole-in-the-wall business on Baxter by Grand. It is run on a walk-in basis. Dr. Z will sit you down, ask you some questions mainly about certain symptoms you might have or what you are looking to remedy. He then takes your pulse (but it's obvious he's feeling for more than just your pulse), sometimes applies some pressure to a muscle on your body (once on my calf), takes a look at your tongue and then he takes some pictures of your eyes and then takes a look at the pics and makes some diagnosis of your iris as well as the whites of your eyes (he is working with me on my cholesterol and prostate). Sometimes you might get lucky and his father (Dr. Z claims he's the master) will take a look at the pics as well and put his 2 cents worth (speaking in Mandarin). Dr. Z will then write up a list of herbs, roots, barks, berries that he feels will remedy your problems and then usually his father is the one that puts the concoction together in either paper or plastic bags. There are dozens of jars along the walls and Dr. Z's father will pull several down and fill your prescription. I believe they usually fill three paper bags with pretty much the identical mixes. You get three bags for the week and each bag is actually split into two servings so you are getting a total of six servings and you are suppose to drink twice a day so I've been drinking my "tea" on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays and then I see Dr. Z on Saturdays. You receive written instructions on how to prepare the tea but usually you soak one bag in 4 cups of water for 10 minutes or more in a bowl or pot, then you bring to a boil and then simmer for 30-45 minutes with the lid ON at all times. You strain the tea in a fine mesh strainer and split it into two portions. One for morning and one afternoon OR one for afternoon and one evening OR one for morning and one for evening. The cost is APPROXIMATELY $85 a visit which includes both the diagnosis and tea(s). The result? My first couple visits were about me having low energy. I have to say, I did feel more energized and alert after the 2nd bag of tea. My concern now is high cholesterol and according to Dr. Z, Chinese medicine differs from Western medicine in that Chinese medicine deals with the gallbladder rather than the liver when it comes to high cholesterol. So I intend to continue drinking the tea along with adjusting my diet in an attempt to get my cholesterol to lower (even though I tend to believe it's the pharmaceutical companies that are responsible for the whole high-cholesterol scare lol) and will get it tested again in May. NOTE and a possible warning: The teas can differ in taste depending on what is prescribed for you. If you cannot handle bitter tasting drinks, this might not be for you. The first tea I received was pretty challenging to drink (think hot murky pond water) but this sort of thing personally doesn't bother me because I'm that "Bizarre Foods" type of person and pretty adventurous when it comes to challenging foods and drinks.
