Easily the WORST experience I've ever had with acupuncture. There was a great place in Jackson Heights that I used to go to, but Comuni moved to Forest Hills, so I decided to try Wan-Mei Woo. She says all of 5 words to me before she has me cram myself face down on a medical table. ChinaHerb/Woo does not have the standard massage/acupuncture bed with a face down headrest. Instead they have a flat table and give you basically a hemorrhoid pillow to rest your forehead on. This is awful for a couple reasons: it's claustrophobic and gives no air to breathe, and also, if you have a neck issue, it bends your neck backward in an awkward position. It's not relaxing at all. She, then, uncrumpled some emergency blanket from some corner of the room, threw it over me and left (no mention of how long). Because the walls are not built up to the ceiling, I listen to two competing soundtracks and EVERY word of the other patients' conversations and check-in. The only good thing I can say is that menstrual cycle of the neighboring patient seems to be doing much better today! The doctor comes in and out of the room to grab supplies for the other rooms, but says nothing to me. After a total of 20 minutes, she comes back into my room, crumples up the emergency blanket and stashes it in the corner--I wonder if this thing is ever washed (certainly wasn't washed between my leaving and the next patient being ushered into my room). She asks if I feel better. I say not really. Digging her knuckles into the back of my head, she asks if I feel pain. I say, it's certainly not comfortable. She says, yes, but do you feel pain? I say, well, what you're doing hurts. She asks me to turn my neck from side to side, and says, it's better than when you came in. But the important thing, and the reason Woo is not trustworthy, is because she never asked me to turn my neck when I came in. So, really, she has nothing to compare and she is just fobbing me off. Then she leaves the room. I'm not sure if this means we're done or if she's coming back or what. Eventually, I collect my things and head to the front desk to pay $85 for less than 30 minutes. TLDR: The doctor was rude, the "bed" was not professional, the practice seemed unsanitary, and the experience did absolutely nothing good for me. read more

Back in Sept i had Covid, after recovering I had a lingering cough. My primary care Dr prescribed antibiotics, and I completed two rounds. The cough persisted. I then had a painful ear infection, saw my ENT and went through another round of antibiotics and then a steroid. After all this I still had a lingering cough. I was taking DayQuil as well as cough medicine daily. I finally decided to see Dr. Woo. In the first session she had me lay on my stomach and delicately inserted what seems to be about 40 needles. I then relaxed under a foil blanket to keep warm, and after she removed them, she proceeded to give me a deep massage. She told me to expect to feel better later today and even better tomorrow and that's exactly what happened. I woke up the next morning and for the first time in weeks, I did not have to spend 20-30 minutes blowing my nose. In fact my congestion was virtually gone, and my cough the same. This was a tremendous mental and physical relief. I was at my wits end because I did not want to take anymore antibiotics. I was feeling 100% after two sessions, it decided to go for one extra just to be sure. Terrific Acupuncturist. I usually go to someone all the way out in Port Washington (also great but wanted someone closer to home). I've gone to her about 3 times already and I always leave feeling like I got a deep tissue work out. Highly recommend her. You pay a little more for the first visit but then it's $50 each time from there on. She does take some insurance but most insurance doesn't cover this. I don't care. A friend recommended that I see an acupuncturist when I developed a reoccurring twitch as well as an occasional sharp pain in my arm that I had been ignoring for months. I was sure it was carpal tunnel from abusing my mouse arm and working in front of this screen for so many years. I recalled an acquaintance passing her card to me a few months earlier, gushing extensively about what a miracle worker she was in helping her recover from her years of back pain. She told me she may seem a bit far, but so worth it. Am I glad I still had her information on hand, because, as it turns out, she was really as wonderful as described. Also, she is so close to Roosevelt Jackson Heights station, that it actually only took me 20 mins from midtown! When I first came to her, I was hesitant, because I have never had acupuncture, but she immediately made me feel at ease with her warmth and kindness. She asked in-depth about my living, work, eating and exercise habits, and various life style details that I never really thought about or considered. She was definitely far more attentive than even my primary care doctor! With a little bit of probing, she was able to target immediately that the source of the twitch and pain was actually coming from my neck, back and shoulders, which then radiated to my arm. Apparently, It wasn't carpal tunnel after all! It was actually a more serious issue in my back. I have to say that first day of treatment was intense, but I was surprised how good I felt after a few series of treatments. Until I went to see her, I guess I had been ignoring a lot of the aches and pain throughout my body all these years. I am so much more aware of how my body is supposed to feel, and I've never felt better! Not only that, but she was somehow able to detect my anemia on that first day, and prescribed a recommended diet, as well as some herbal teas that she blended herself for me to drink during the next couple of weeks. I have to admit, I didn't drink it at first because I was a little skeptical and because of how bitter it tasted, but after realizing that her treatments on my back and arms were actually working, I decided I needed to give it a try. Will just say prior to doing acupuncture with Dr Woo, my husband and I never were able to have kids even through IVF. I'm happy to say now after doing 12 weeks of acupuncture, we were successful in our 2nd IVF try! Couldn't have done it without her. I'm about to move away from NYC, and I am SO sad to have to leave this place and find a new specialist. Dr. Woo has done wonders for regulating my period that I haven't been able to achieve for 5+ years via dozens of birth control products and 'western' methods. I had basically given up (along with prospects of children), but now I am more optimistic about my fertility and general health. Acupuncture can be a bit of a mystery to understand, but Dr. Woo is a pro and if you go you will see evidence all around: so many photos of miracle babies conceived, patients of all ages, ethnicities, and ailments in the waiting room. The space is clean but pretty sparse and unassuming (this is def not a glamorous spa-like environment, but are you there to take photos or get fixed??) If you've never done acupuncture, you'll have to accept more unknown variables; it can be hard to say how many sessions you'll need, and even harder to explain exactly what's going on in your body. But if you've tried other methods to no avail, I would highly recommend giving acupuncture a shot because there is nothing to lose. And there's no one better to trust than Dr. Woo. read more

this review is long over due*** I went to Dr. Wan Mei Woo back in 2016 for Migraines. I have had migraines since I was in middle school. My migraines usually start with either peripheral black outs or blind spots followed by vomiting and a headache that would keep me disabled for 6 hours; not to mention an additional 24 hours of general weakness and lack of energy to do things. I have been going to Dr. Wu for years, mostly for back problems, sometimes rather severe ones. I have always improved significantly under her care. She is utterly professional, her office quiet, her assistants (I've met a few over the years), courteous and efficient. As for Dr. Wu: YOU HAVE SAVED MY LIFE MORE TIMES THAN I CAN COUNT. If I could give Dr Woo 100 stars I would. She truly helped make our dreams come true. I felt like her acupuncture was the one thing that allowed us to get pregnant. It was unbelievable and in my opinion the only thing that helped us. We were trying for 16 months and the pain of not getting pregnant every month was the worst experience we've ever been through. After 11 months we decided to get some tests done and go to a fertility clinic. The first step for me was to check if my tubes were open (which was soooooooo painful but worth it!!!!). We went to the fertility specialist in December '15 where they checked my uterus and follicles. Made sure it wasn't damaged and that I had plenty of follicles. Everything looked good. Basically it was unexplained infertility. They couldn't figure out why we weren't getting pregnant. Jan '16 I did an IUI.... And it didn't work. February, we went away on vacation and didn't wanna think about it. March timed intercourse again. At this point we came up w a 3 month plan. March would be timed intercourse, April IUI and May IVF (which scared the crap outta me). In the meantime, my husbands cousin who went through IVF twice and has 2 children through it kept telling me to try acupuncture. It didn't really make sense to me cause there was nothing scientific about it. I never really understood the concept of sticking me with some needles and my dreams would come true lol. I still don't fully understand it even though IT WORKS! So the end of March came and we weren't pregnant. If I'm willing to do IVF in 2 months, I gotta give acupuncture a shot is what I thought. I found Dr Woo on Yelp and she had amazing reviews and specialized in acupuncture infertility. Figured why not. I show up at her office which was pretty plain Jane. She takes me into a room, we sit down across from each other and she asks to see my hands. I give her my hands and she feels my pulse on both wrists silently for about a minute or 2. She than asked to see my tongue (I know kinda wierd). I stick out my tongue. IMMEDIATELY she knew what my problem was.... "It's your circulation, that's why you're not getting pregnant.... And I can fix that." It was pretty crazy. She seemed very confident. She tells me to see her once a week. I told her I was getting an IUI in 2 weeks and she told me to come in once a week before it and the night before the IUI to come in again. The actual acupuncture was pretty relaxing. It doesn't hurt at all. She put some needles in my ankles, my belly, my shins, and my head. I saw her 3 times and did my IUI that month. Saw her the week after my IUI and she congratulated me for being pregnant. There was no way she coulda known that. Ps.I was pregnant. Somehow she knew and somehow the acupuncture worked! I've been coming to Dr. Woo for almost a year now, per my client's recommendation. I'm forever indebted. My job requires 9-10 hours of meticulous hand-work per day and my muscles are so weakened by the end of the week it's difficult to hold my phone. Seeing Dr. Woo fixes this immediately. Prior to seeing Dr. Woo I regularly sought out chiropractic and massage services to alleviate my discomfort but they weren't nearly as effective as Dr. Woo and much more expensive. While working on a month long project in New York, I had a severe headache. It was so bad I was unable to concentrate on my job. I went to see Dr. Wan-Mei Woo because of her great Yelp reviews. On my first visit, her needles alleviated my headache immediately. After she learned that I am in the IT business, she examined my two hands and informed me that I have joint inflammation in my wrist and fingers. How did she do that? I didn't even tell Dr. Woo that I have chronic wrist pain and finger numbness! My theory is that she must have an astute observation gained only through years of experience. The only reason I didn't bring it up originally is because I never knew where I could get help for it. Dr. Woo said she could help so I gave it a shot. She treated me with a combination of techniques: acupuncture , moxibustion, cupping (vacuum glass cups placed over my upper shoulder) and "Gua Sha" (a piece of heavy metal rubbed in-between my joint and tendon area, than applied with her personal proprietary herbal liquid over the area). After her treatment, most of my finger numbness is gone and a higher sensation has returned to my fingers. I can't be happier and I received much more than what I came for. Hello!! I've been going to Dr. Woo for some time now. I've been a long time migraine sufferer and am happy to say that her treatments, coupled with other modalities such as exercise and diet, has helped me tremendously. Though not sure if I'm completely migraine-free, I'm happy to say that the frequency and intensity of my episodes have both lessened. I really enjoy coming to her office as she's so bubbly and pleasant. She's really attune with her treatments and very attentive. One time, I was about to tell her I've been having palpitations, but she already knew and took the words right out my mouth after her assessment. I'm a nurse and have been in the healthcare field for some time now. I can honestly say that I trust Dr. Woo and would wholeheartedly recommend her to anyone looking for alternative care. With that said, her practice is honest, though small and budding. She's reasonably priced, especially since I've been to others who charge more and give much less. She's very accommodating and flexible with her time. I never feel rushed or "overbooked" during my appointments. The sessions are not timed or limited at all. I feel I get more than what I pay. In terms of payment, I've paid both in cash (if I have it) or credit/debit card, in which a receipt is either emailed or texted to you (your choice), which is pretty green of her =). She'll proudly pull out her iPad (that her son got her) with the swipe tag to charge. The story is super cute, which I'm sure she tells better. So, what are you waiting for? Call and make an appointment with this wonderful woman, who loves what she does and it shows best with her work. The office is quaint and clean, located on the first floor of a house. The staff, which consisted of Dr. Woo and two men, were all amicable, welcoming and approachable. There were a few people there as first timers as well. It was my first time doing acupuncture and I was skeptical, but hearing so many great things about it and reading how good Dr. Woo is, I wanted to judge for myself. Following a brief consultation with Dr. Woo where she took notes and listened about my aches and pains, we started with the acupuncture. I didn't feel a thing. I was expecting a little pinch, but not even. The rooms were very basic and the walls are very thin like another reviewer noted, but overall I liked the environment. Have you ever felt so bad that you would do anything for it to go away? I've had this horrible case of hayfever where my eyes would tear up because I'd want to sneeze but my nose wouldn't let me. I tried all the OTC medications like Zyrtec, Claritin and Allegra but none of it worked. I'm beginning to think my body's built up an immunity against them. Then a coworker recommended that I try acupuncture. When I couldn't take it anymore this season, I paid Dr. Woo a visit. I came in for a treatment on a Saturday and I couldn't believe this. By the time I went back to work on Monday, the allergy attacks were receding and I was fully functioning by Tuesday! I came in ready for anything! You can tell she has been doing this for years because like a chef who's able to filet a poisonous puffer fish quickly without an afterthought, Dr. Woo carefully placed needles on my face with just a few quick strokes. Before I knew it, I had needles protruding from me and I didn't even feel a thing! I was going to play on my phone during my treatment time but I quickly dozed off in her relaxing atmosphere. By the time I woke, the needles were off and Dr. Woo prescribed me some herbal medicine in powder form. This was to be mixed in warm water and taken the following days. Now, if you've never had Chinese herbal medicine before, I would recommend preparing yourself! It's like tasting hard alcohol for the first time in your youthful days. No, the medicine doesn't taste like alcohol, but you would find yourself hard pressed to look for some chasers afterwards. I had some Ritz Crackers on the side after drinking the medicine in one long gulp so that the crackers would absorb some of the tastes from my tongue. Or you could just man up (or woman up). Fortunately it becomes an acquired taste after a couple of rounds and I find myself not worrying about the taste anymore. Another good thought that helps me get through the concoction sometimes is knowing the benefits in the next few days outweigh the few minutes I have to put up with the drink. With such success after the first treatment, I went back to her once a week for a follow up and this hayfever season has been my best one yet! Dr. Woo is a fertility godsend. I had POF and my FSH was so high and thought I had no hopes of it getting better. After like 6 treatments I FINALLY got my first cycle after not having a natural one since a year ago. I kept coming weekly and the second cycle came naturally on time!!! very exciting. Dr. Woo has been treating me for various neck and back problems. I've gone to a chiropractor for years, but never found complete relief from the pain. Dr. Woo gave me a combo of chinese herbs and acupuncture and I've never felt better. She takes the time to listen to you and answer any questions you may have, and then outlines the course of treatment. I can't even get my doctor to do that at a regular check up. I was put in a room where across from me there were extremely loud conversations. People were laughing and talking in Chinese and I couldn't relax because of the noise. I'm surprised these people were allowed to talk so loudly when I was across from them. Wan-Mei seemed nice but she didn't say anything about making a second appointment or making a plan. There wasn't much conversation. I really wanted to like my experience here after reading all the positive reviews but I was disappointed and still stressed. My first time here I went in unable to move my arm.. I was bartending at the time, and had been working so much that my arm was full of knots and the pain was going all the way down to my fingers and was no longer allowing me to move my hand or arm without feeling immense pain. I went to her not knowing what to expect. I was there for an hour more or less, by the time I left I was moving my arm, no longer in pain only feeling sore. Dr. Woo is a God send! First, I'm very disappointed and feel personally offended reading the (very few) negative reviews! Dr. Woo is incredible and knows what she is doing. You have to trust her fully and let her work her magic. Because the negative reviews are bonkers (in my opinion), I thought I'd leave my experience here so people know what to expect: 1. This is a no frills place. Meaning, it's not a fancy western spa. Don't get your hopes up. You can hear the person next door and they can hear you. But they can't see you and there's the anonymity of NYC so who cares. I'm not here to be pampered and spoken to with passivity about my issues. If you want the truth - the real, hard truth - this is the place for you. It's NOT a place for the weak or those that can't take straight up and accurate findings. Ps. It's $55 per session (but also takes insurance; higher rate for first session). 2. Sometimes she is very busy. But it doesn't mean you will get less care. She will talk to you for a few minutes, look at your tongue, take your pulse, have you lay down, stick needles in you, put a weird ass aluminum sheet on you, and leave you there for 15-20 minutes. Then come back, take needles out, say good bye and see you next week. Look, I don't get any of the process but hey it works so I'm not questioning it! 3. She is genuinely a warm person who wants to help you. She communicates like a traditional straightforward Chinese woman. TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT. She will heal you if you trust her. I've been going there for months for fertility/period regulation and she has done wonders that I never thought was possible. There are often people in the waiting room talking to me about how she's a miracle worker and helps with their pain.
