I definitely don't want a branch to fall on my neighbor's fence or my roof, so I set out to find someone to trim my tree. When I had the tree inspected before purchasing the house, the guy that came out said he could do it for $600 once the leaves had fallen off, so I knew that it would be a little up there. I got bids from 5 people, ranging from $100 to $700. There were several reasons that I went with Urban Arborist over the cheaper guys. He didn't suggest that I top the tree which can be very bad for it, not to mention ugly. He has 2 million in liability insurance and worker's comp, he is licensed in Nichols Hills (the only place in the metro area required to have one), has an education in trees, and is a member of the International Society of Arbor Culture. The owner, Dustin Bean, was incredibly friendly, responsive, and knowledgeable. While he and his assistant were working, they both wore hardhats (safety is important!) though only Dustin got up in the tree, and he didn't use those tree grabber shoes, which can hurt it. They were at work for about 3 hours which included taking out all of the dead limbs, removing the suckers and infected branches, picking up the sticks and cleaning up the front yard out to where ever the mess had scattered on this windy day, stacked any usable firewood, and answered all of my questions. His minimum is $200, but his knowledge is definitely worth it. Afterwards, I asked him when I could next expect to need to trim the tree again, and while every tree is different, he said most Maples need it about every three years. He'll definitely be my only call the next time my tree needs trimmed.

The price is fair, and they were beyond professional during the removal! They went the extra mile to ensure that my driveway and lawn surrounding the tree weren't damaged during the process. All of the debris was cleaned up afterward, leaving no evidence of the removal aside from the ground stump. I'm very happy that we chose to use them for our tree removal, and I would definitely choose to go with them again!

Matt is a Veteran - which is a big plus in my mind! Since I was going from "treated" wood to "Trex" material he informed us that our sub-structure would need to be strengthened. Our supports were on a 24" spacing and "Trex" required no more than 12" spacing - so it made clear sense that he needed to redo the support system. For what-ever reasons - Matt lost a couple of his employees during this project and the schedule got stretched. Matt brought in an entire new crew to complete the project - with results that both my wife and myself are very pleased with. Here are a couple of pictures of the completed job:

I want to start by listing some red flags about my experience with Backyard Oasis…read more - I received a quote from Matt via text message stating that he would build my deck for $5000 less than my current quote. - At our first meeting Matt asked us to make all checks out to him because he doesn't have a business bank account yet, even though he said he had been in business for years. - At our first meeting Matt asked if he could buy 10 of our acres for him and his wife. - Matt said the 76 x 16' deck would be done in one week. - At our second meeting Matt brought a "blueprint" made with sharpie on a page of notebook paper that had misspellings. - The first time Matt was on my property he asked if he could come out and shoot guns. I decided to move forward with Backyard Oasis because of the way Matt talked about his subcontractor, Clint. After meeting Clint I was ready to move forward and I cut a check for half of the total amount directly to Matt. The first day of work Clint hit the ground running but materials and tools needed from Matt were late, not ordered or simply and usable so Clint was not able to work at full speed. At one point Matt was delivering the metal for the roof and was walking on it after he haphazardly threw them on the ground. The rooftops are all scratched. Matt was not here very often but after he left each time I was picking up his cigarette butts, lunch and candy bars covered in ants. Due to the lack of communication from Matt, the owner, to Clint, the subcontractor, the deck was not built to the specs on the "blueprint." Matt asked me to pay for the miscommunication and I said no. After that Matt said he would "just go over there and cut the post down" then I asked him to leave my property due to his threat to undo Clint's work. The next day Matt sent me a text saying that he hoped I had not gone behind his back and "advanced Clint any funds." I had not. When the job was close to completion I cut a second check for the final payment to Matt, including taxes to the state. I would not recommend Backyard Oasis to anyone based on the emotional drain it put on my family and Clint's family. There is also Matt's lack of knowledge for building decks. I have a beautiful and structurally sound deck now and wish I could go back in time and hire Clint without Backyard Oasis. Clint is a master carpenter, hard worker (even through the July heat) and creative. Most importantly he was respectful of my time, my property and my family. I could say the finished work looks better than we ever imagined. I could report this and other nice things I would likely be saying if any of a number of great companies had done the work. But what I would like to report is that these folks did such a wonderful job of befriending us, and making us feel like they would not have it any other way than us being totally satisfied, that we immediately called them back to do the foundation for a 12 x 12 workshop in our back yard. And once again, I could easily tell you all sorts of nice things about the slab they poured for us, or the care they took not to disturb our lawn and plants, but once again it is the friendship they built with us that all but forces me to talk about that instead. We are friends with these people now. Hanniel and his little boy are like family now. And they have helped us in ways we never imagined. Hanny recommended a roofer to us who saved us at least $3600 off of what we were about to pay someone else, and they are doing better work than we asked for. And Hanny recommended an electrician who, when I asked him for an estimate told me exactly what he was going to do, gave me a list of materials and told me exactly how much the materials were costing him, gave me the option to buy the stuff myself if I could get a better deal, and then asked me, "What do you feel comfortable paying us for labor?" I threw out a low ball figure, and he told me exactly what he would do for me for that price and then gave me a couple of options that were, without a doubt, better options for me and my wallet. Where have these people been all of my life? and I have Hanniel to thank for this. I would not even DREAM of calling anyone else but Stallion Concrete for my next concrete project, and I can tell you in all honesty, I probably will call Hanny first if I were looking for a used car or a cruise ship vacation. While I have never broached these subjects with him, I am SURE he knows the right people where I will get a Christian treatment from someone who actually cares about me and my happiness with the finished work. No, they are not paying me for telling you these things, and no, they are not giving me some sort of free work or other enticements. They earned this from me by doing a great job for a fair price, and for earning my trust in the process. and hey, I'm not doing this as a favor to them, I am taking the time to write this review FOR YOU. I think you will thank me later for this.
