I was looking for a place I could transfer my VHS tapes to digital. I've been looking for about a month now and most places want you to mail them the VHS tape which I didn't feel comfortable with due to the fact that it's my parents wedding video.Finally on Sunday, I decided to look for a place because I'm usually so busy with work that I don't have time to go and find a place during the week. This was the only place open on the weekend. The owner's name is Carlos and he's one of the coolest business owners I've ever met. I took him the tape and he let me know how much he charged to get this done. I asked him how long it would take and he replied, probably an hour or two. Within an hour he sent me a text and let me know that the tape had been transferred to digital and that I could pick up at any time before 10 PM. Customer service isn't dead and Carlos is definitely one of the examples that it's still alive in small businesses. I used Carlo about 2 years ago to convert all of my tapes to DVD. I had over 50 tapes. My star rating given above is based on technical items. Keep in mind I'm pretty knowledgeable on video and digital, as well as being very demanding on quality. On the positive side: I agree with all of the reviewers that he gives great service at extremely reasonable prices. He is pleasant and easy to deal with and my job was completed in a very fast and timely manner considering the size of the job. On customer service I give Carlo a FIVE STAR rating. If you don't have any way to play your old tapes at all this is an EXCELLENT service at a reasonable price. You'll be able to see what you have. [see end comment] Now for the negatives. [CAUTION--this is technical stuff from a GEEK] Carlo's equipment is consumer grade tape to DVD machines that you could get yourself for a few hundred dollars. These types of machines don't have great tape players or any type of time based correction (TBC) circuitry. What this means is that you'll likely see jitter, frame drops, lines in the imagery, and other tape based faults. Carlo didn't seem to have any technical knowledge of video. When I asked how the video was encoded on the DVD he said it was VOD files. True, but VOD is the envelop not the encoding. The VOD files are encoded with MPEG2. This is actually becoming an obsolete technology since DVD's are going away. MPEG2 encoding is a lossy process meaning that not all video information is captured. Also it introduces a lot of digital artifacts. If you want to put any of your video online (web, youtube, email) you'll have to convert the DVD's to MP4. Going from MPEG2 to MP4 will make the quality worse. Coupled with the tape quality the outcome was pretty bad. Several DVD's were unplayable. Carlo was great about redoing these for me but the quality was still not to my expectation. I didn't bother with taking all the bad stuff back because tapes he couldn't play at all work fine on my Prosumer grade tape player with TBC (Panasonic AG 1970). Since the quality of my tape player is far better than Carlo's I have opted to digitize these tapes myself directly to a PC using a lossless format. I can then use these files to create DVD or MP4 files with higher quality. It's a time consuming process but yields results I can live with. I'm just getting back to this project and what prompted this review was that none of my tapes had been rewound. Considering that professionals understand that proper storage of VHS tapes requires that they be rewound and stored vertically I felt like this was a good indicator of Carlo's technical knowledge. Bottom line is you need to decide what level of reproduction is acceptable to you. I will probably only redo the items I think are really important but I will end up doing more than half. read more

Awesome service. Carlos is very prompt, very nice and very affordable. Do not be alarmed, it is a residential address. My tip is to call ahead of time and set up a time to come by with your tapes. I dropped 5 home videos off in the afternoon and he was able to have the DVDs ready by the next morning. There is a set price per tape, however, each DVD fits 2 hours of footage, so Carlos will inform you at time of drop off. No hidden fees here. $10 per DVD he has to make. Between the time frame of drop off and pick up, Carlos was very communicative about analyzing the tapes and made sure it was okay to make additional DVDs if the footage on the tape was over 2 hours. Which FYI, he does very well communicating via phone call or text. He would text me to get approval if any tapes were over the 2 hour mark. I would definitely go to him with any of your priceless VHS tapes. It's very nice to have my home videos finally on disc. I will update this review once am able to play the DVDs as I am sure they are expected to play back well. Still, I like to be thorough in my reviews. Stay tuned! read more
