I recently completed a lease transaction with Volvo of Danbury after receiving an initial offer…read moreemail stating they were interested in "buying my vehicle back." Based on that language, I reasonably believed the dealership was purchasing the vehicle and that all financial considerations including mileage were factored into the buy-back numbers presented in the deal. The dealership agreed to pick up the remaining months of my lease, which further reinforced my understanding that this was a buy-back transaction. At no point during the negotiation or closing process did the salesperson mention that I would still be responsible for excess mileage charges after the deal was finalized. A few days ago, I received a bill from Volvo for over $7,000 in excess mileage fees. This was the first time mileage liability was brought to my attention. Had this been clearly disclosed during the transaction, I would not have proceeded with the deal. When I spoke with the General Manager, I was told that it was my responsibility to raise the mileage question and that it is not the sales team's responsibility to discuss mileage during a lease buy-back transaction. I respectfully disagree. When a dealership uses "buy back" language, it creates a reasonable expectation that the vehicle is being purchased outright and that associated costs are accounted for in the transaction. This experience left me feeling misled and disappointed. Transparency is critical in lease transactions, and important financial obligations, especially ones totaling thousands of dollars, should be clearly communicated upfront. If you choose to work with this dealership, be sure to ask very detailed questions and verify every component of the agreement. Unfortunately, this was not a good-faith experience for me.
