I am sharing this in hopes of saving others time, stress, and money. I will admit that I did not behave appropriately during my final interaction with the office. I left upset and called Lacy a vulgar name in front of other patients. That was wrong, and I take responsibility for it. My opinion of how I was treated by her, however, has not changed. My concern is with the billing practices in this office. I previously worked in medical billing in a supervisory role, so I understand insurance contracts, allowable amounts, bundled charges, pre-estimates, and patient responsibility calculations. Several things about this situation raised serious concerns for me. I was told I needed to pay half of a $5,600 treatment plan up front for crown replacement work. That part was not the issue. The issue was that the office was not charging the insurance approved amount. Half down should have been approximately $1,309, yet I was asked to pay more than double that amount before treatment. When I contacted my insurance company, they advised me that billing above contracted allowable amounts may violate provider agreements. They also advised me they would be reviewing their relationship with this office. My insurance company attempted a three way call with the office to clarify the billing, but the office declined because they stated they were no longer willing to treat me. I simply wanted an explanation as to why the office was attempting to charge amounts that did not align with the insurance approved pre-estimate. Contracted insurance rates are not subjective. The office repeatedly stated they had called my insurance company with all procedure codes to provide accurate pricing. However, the insurance representative I spoke with stated there were no notes showing that such a call occurred. They did confirm that on 5/6/2026 coverage was verified, and the pre-estimate from Aspen was received that same day. According to my insurance company, the written pre-estimate overrides verbal benefit quotes. The pre-estimate reflected a patient responsibility of approximately $873 per crown including buildup. The office attempted to charge approximately $1,903 per tooth. The office also collected $236 for items I was later told were "no charge" items and that, to my knowledge, were not used during treatment. Communication with the office manager, Lacy, was extremely difficult. I was repeatedly interrupted and could not get a direct answer as to why the office was not honoring the insurance approved pre-estimate. At one point she also stated they had not yet received the pre-estimate from insurance, despite insurance later confirming otherwise. She repeatedly stated that "this is Aspen's policy," which Aspen customer service later told me was not true. By the end of the interaction, Lacy seemed oddly proud to lose a patient. As I walked out, she had a very smug expression, almost like she had handled this conversation many times before. I was surprised by the lack of professionalism during the financial portion of my experience. I encourage patients to carefully review treatment plans, pre-estimates, EOBs, and itemized charges before agreeing to large upfront payments at this office This says it all https://fox4kc.com/news/problem-solvers/more-patients-come-forward-after-fox4-investigation-into-chain-of-dental-practices/?fbclid=IwZnRzaAR7KSxleHRuA2FlbQIxMQBzcnRjBmFwcF9pZAo2NjI4NTY4Mzc5AAEez9cS4eBlhO8FfvQlob-jmio-7IgcT56kbLtEo7QZpoviOfiCdaTRIeUg5kw_aem_w3E6CsAAPrq4sIRze_BEhQ

My fear of dentists is so pathological that I warn those who will be working on me about my phobia. I've had dental technicians in the past ignore my words and, in one case, I got the feeling they deliberately treated me more harshly. Yea...not a good feeling. The folks here at Family Dental Care have been very compassionate. They offer an anti-anxiety med to take, prior to coming to the appointment. Upon arrival, everyone is very kind and patient as they carefully tell me exactly what is going to happen. It's not that I've decided to love dentistry but I can at least go for regularly scheduled appointments with a minimum of terror. The people at the front office are organized and just as kind as the dentists. I love the choice of music played while you wait for your appointment as it is very calming and assuring. The prices are reasonable and they offer slight discounts for cash and if you don't have dental insurance. I also greatly appreciate that they don't try to upsell or convince you to do dental work that isn't necessary.

When I left I had to return 5 times to have my work corrected and it still was never right and it was cosmetic! I had to put up with the dentist comments about my personal choices and her assistant was very rude. As a retired person from dentistry, I can not understand how they ( the Fisher Sisters), were able to graduate from dental school. They also were very defensive and unprofessional. Please beware and don't bring your children there.

I was sitting in an exam room waiting for the dentist and overheard a conversation amongst staff/drs talking poorly about a patient in a very innapropriate and rude manner. It made me pretty uncomfortable but I have really bad dental anxiety and getting there in the first place was a big step so I wanted to follow through. That day I needed a root canal and two crowns so it was a very long appointment. I felt left in the dark throughout the way and Wendy was not super friendly. Not rude but not comforting either. After that I had to make two appointments for cleanings and a cavity. They messed up my appointments and the hygienist almost numbed me on the wrong side, I explained that I had a cavity needing filled and it needed to be the correct side for the numbing. She switched sides and finished. She was also not very attentive or kind, super rough and not gentle while working in my mouth. Today I went back for my third and final appointment. At reception, I reminded them about the cavity and they said it was on the other side, and I said so should that have been done last week? They completely missed it. I was upset and flustered; I have a lot of anxiety around this, and was informed I could get it all done today but that my entire mouth would have to be numbed. It was so traumatizing last week when she gave me the shots that I was shaking after. I decided to suck it up and just get it done and be done with it. The same hygienist from the week prior, Anastasia, came to take me back and asked how I was doing, I was honest and told her not good, and told her why, she decided instead of just apologizing and understanding, that she'd rather argue with me about what happened. I've been so uncomfortable every single time I've been in this office and I finally decided that was enough. I'll find somewhere else. To be honest I'd rather drive an hour to my old dentist in my old town than ever go to this office again. All of this to also say that the way they price things and charge you for things feels pretty scammy, or maybe they're just way overpriced. Another reason I should have trusted my gut on the first day. STAY AWAY, Find someone who will be nice to you while they drill holes in your teeth. Find someone who won't talk shit about you in front of other patients. Find someone who will numb you in the correct location. Please.

I offered a hand to shake, was refused, and attempted to establish a rapport with him, but he walked in visibly hostile in demeanor & stayed that way until he turned his back again & walked out. Defensive medicine appearance, when attempting to clarify that I could not complete testing due to Covid symptoms. He made certain to be controlling the entire visit, obstructing my ability to have productive communication with him. Would not listen or allow discussion of medical history, refused conversation to establish any kind of rapport. Withheld test results, claiming a blank computer screen was proof that I did not have a condition that his practice partners & peers in pulmonary medicine (within other practices, as well as has medical group) have diagnosed as positive for the last 20 years. I saw the test results at the testing sight with my own eyes, but he refused to go over it, or pull it up on the blank computer screen, wanting me to believe the blank screen was criteria that he used to deny my long established asthmatic conditions. Unprofessional, arrogant behavior. Turned his back to me and paced back & forth in the pt. room, hostile environment, refused eye contact most of visit. Medical assistant said "HE will tell you "what's going to happen". Misrepresentation of events & facts, malicious malignment of me, put in writing as "defensive medicine" , punitive, angry affect, violated patient privacy laws. Asked questions, then cut me off before I could answer in a a complete sentence. Patient before me cancelled, staff expected me to show up 2 hours early because of the other pt. cancellation. Called early that day to reschedule my appt., due to Covid symptoms. Staff nurse refused a call back. Dr. Shakir ignored my question about whether or not he got my message from the nurse, who later stated she did not listen to the message left at 9:45 a.m., that I needed to possibly reschedule my 3:00 p.m. appt., and he neglected to answer the question. Felt that I was being treated rudely and he was taking it out on me that I would not be able to come in 2 hours early because other pt. cancelled per his scheduler. He walked out of room without complete appointment, and proceeded to violate my patient privacy. Practice manager stated she would intervene to protect my privacy but did not, after stating she would address the shocking behaviour of Dr. Shakir. If he has done this to me, will he do it to you ? A review site for medical doctors states that for every one negative doctor experience reported, about 23 don't. His so called good reviews are interestingly paced the same # of weeks and/or days apart, about 2 -3 per month - and only about 10-20 out of 173 reviews can be found.
