Update: Aspen customer service advised me that charging patients more than the insurance approved pre-estimate is not company policy. I am sharing this in hopes of saving others time, stress, and money. I will admit that I did not behave appropriately during my final interaction with the office. I left upset and called Lacy a vulgar name in front of other patients. That was wrong, and I take responsibility for it. My opinion of how I was treated by her, however, has not changed. My concern is with the billing practices in this office. I previously worked in medical billing in a supervisory role, so I understand insurance contracts, allowable amounts, bundled charges, pre-estimates, and patient responsibility calculations. Several things about this situation raised serious concerns for me. I was told I needed to pay half of a $5,600 treatment plan up front for crown replacement work. That part was not the issue. The issue was that the office was not charging the insurance approved amount. Half down should have been approximately $1,309, yet I was asked to pay more than double that amount before treatment. When I contacted my insurance company, they advised me that billing above contracted allowable amounts may violate provider agreements. They also advised me they would be reviewing their relationship with this office. My insurance company attempted a three way call with the office to clarify the billing, but the office declined because they stated they were no longer willing to treat me. I simply wanted an explanation as to why the office was attempting to charge amounts that did not align with the insurance approved pre-estimate. Contracted insurance rates are not subjective. The office repeatedly stated they had called my insurance company with all procedure codes to provide accurate pricing. However, the insurance representative I spoke with stated there were no notes showing that such a call occurred. They did confirm that on 5/6/2026 coverage was verified, and the pre-estimate from Aspen was received that same day. According to my insurance company, the written pre-estimate overrides verbal benefit quotes. The pre-estimate reflected a patient responsibility of approximately $873 per crown including buildup. The office attempted to charge approximately $1,903 per tooth. The office also collected $236 for items I was later told were "no charge" items and that, to my knowledge, were not used during treatment. Communication with the office manager, Lacy, was extremely difficult. I was repeatedly interrupted and could not get a direct answer as to why the office was not honoring the insurance approved pre-estimate. At one point she also stated they had not yet received the pre-estimate from insurance, despite insurance later confirming otherwise. She repeatedly stated that "this is Aspen's policy," which Aspen customer service later told me was not true. By the end of the interaction, Lacy seemed oddly proud to lose a patient. As I walked out, she had a very smug expression, almost like she had handled this conversation many times before. I was surprised by the lack of professionalism during the financial portion of my experience. I had an incredibly frustrating experience with Aspen Dental that I feel compelled to share. Initially, I sought their services to get invisible liners. I was informed that, before proceeding with the liners, I needed to undergo a deep cleaning of my teeth and that it would be preferable to have my wisdom teeth removed first. They even mentioned that they would "size my invisible liners" on the same day as my deep cleaning, despite my wisdom teeth not being removed yet. They assured me they could also perform the wisdom teeth extraction at their office. From the very start, the experience was a nightmare. The process of getting my X-ray photos was painfully inefficient. It took two different staff members to complete the task because the first person didn't know how to take the pictures correctly, resulting in a prolonged and uncomfortable ordeal. During the deep cleaning, I was essentially reprimanded by the dental tech who repeatedly scolded me for not opening my mouth wide enough, even though my jaw was as open as it could be. This treatment felt condescending, like being spoken to as I were a toddler, and added to my discomfort. The attempts to remove my wisdom teeth were equally traumatic. I endured two separate procedures where they struggled to numb my mouth adequately. I could feel the entire process, which left me feeling insanely nauseous and distressed. When they failed to successfully complete the extraction, they suggested I visit an oral surgeon. Upon consulting with the oral surgeon, I was informed that I would need to pay upfront, and my dental insurance did not cover the procedure. Given that my wisdom teeth were not causing severe issues, I decided to forego the surgery and proceed with the liners as originally planned, assuming the removal was not absolutely necessary. However, when I called Aspen Dental to schedule my appointment for the liners, I was told that I couldn't proceed with the liners without the wisdom teeth removal, despite the fact that they had initially assured me it was merely a preference. After paying $5,000 out of pocket for the required cleaning, the entire experience felt like a classic bait-and-switch scam. Overall, Aspen Dental's handling of my case was unprofessional and deceptive. I would strongly advise others to be cautious and thoroughly question their procedures and costs before committing to any treatments. I went to the Barry Road location in January 2024 for a free xray and consultation as part of a promotion. At that time I DECLINED any further appointments or services and yet was charged $1,613 for services I HAD DECLINED! I spoke to the Barry Road clinic and thought I had resolved the issue until I got another bill in the mail and so I called corporate. Again I thought they had taken care of it until I got a bill from a debt collector in the mail. They are a scam business that just wants to cheat people out of their money it seems. read more

When trying to explain to them my conversation on the phone with another staff member the day before about the free x Ray deal I was promised.. the 3 woman in the front in a mocking manner went around saying "I didn't talk to an Emily... did you? This office is quite honestly the worst I've ever experienced. We've scheduled cleaning appointments only to be told we first have to have an exam appointment and THEN return for cleaning. Then, I was told I had to pay my estimated share when I scheduled the appointment "in case I don't show up" and they still have to pay the hygienist. We booked an appointment to have my daughters wisdom teeth out...they rescheduled us twice and then told us they had to refer us to another dentist. Drove an hour to get there and be told they don't accept our insurance. Why would you send a patient to another office that doesn't accept their insurance? The practice seems to be run by contracted employees and also seems to have no concept of basic, normal dental care. They are much more interested in giving you a presentation about your proposed dental care than in actually performing the services. I came here because they advertise as being affordable dentistry and I do not have dental insurance. They suck you in with the free first exam and X-rays. I was told I had periodontal disease and needed $5k work of work. I didn't feel right about this diagnosis so I went to another dentist. This new dentist was shocked that I was given this diagnosis and told me I did not have periodontal disease and the only thing I needed was two old fillings replaced that were starting to leak and a cleaning. read more

Worst experience of my life. I have amazing insurance and they still made me pay for 50% of balance upfront. Didn't end up receiving services and will not give me my money back. I went in there for an emergency visit because my k9 broke. 4 months later and 2 abcesses it is not fixed. The office manager was horrible. Don't ever go there! Please do not come here! Bad experience here today. Had to cancel in the middle of the process, cause I know it was going to get worst from there. Receptionist forgot to check me in so i had to do it after examination, they made it seem like it was my fault. Assistant was killing my throat with her camera tube, and it seems like she was in a hurry. She has to keep readjusting it like she had never seen the tool before, and that scares me!
