Ok... Let me start off by saying that I'm an unbiased straight shooter and my reviews prove it…read more When it comes to my hair, I'm very anal. Since I moved back a year ago since evacuating for Katrina, I've had a hell of a time finding someone who can actually cut mens hair like a Pro. The biggest problem when it comes to mens hair stylist/barber is that 99% of them are limited in skills. What I mean by that is that some barbers are great with clippers and blade but can't style with shears. Some women are great with shears but can't edge with a blade.., and so forth. To make matters worst... Most hair stylist and barbers are cocky and see themselves on top of their game. They think they're the best and can't take constructive criticism or aren't happy when you ask for a style that requires skills outside their expertise. This guy Imad can shear, fade(clippers), edge(blade) and even thread(eyebrows). I'm not saying he's the BEST... But he's the best I've found in Kenner/Metairie/New Orleans area. I've been back in New Orleans for a year now and without exaggerating I've been to atleast 12 different barbers and stylist; spanish, black, arab, women, gay, etc...all limited in skill. Especially those franchise places like Sports Clips are the worst because they're not allowed to use blades. Imad is a well rounded barber and besides impressing me ... I've never walked out feeling like my hair could be better. Aside from that. This is an actual barbershop. Not a salon. Only reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars... It needs a shampoo girl.

As I've stated in other barber shop reviews, I like my hair kept really short, like Marine Corps…read moreshort. (No, I am not a Marine, but I do have the utmost respect for the Corps and all branches of the Armed Forces.....but I digress). I was referred to the West Napoleon Barber Shop by a coworker (thanks HJK), but he actually referred to the shop as Joe "da" barber. Upon entering the shop and immediately time warping several decades to the past, it became apparent as to why he referred to this shop as Joe "da" barber. I know the sign over the front door states they are barber stylists, but this place screams old school barber shop. And any who knows me, knows that I am very nostalgic and love "old school" businesses. This shop is very small and there are 8-10 chairs against the left wall for waiting customers. The shop is staffed by three barbers and each barber has a wooden sign hanging on their mirror with their names on the sign. In chair # 1 closest to the door was Joe, but his sign read "Joe da barber". Chair # 2 was for Mel and chair # 3 was for Rick. Upon my arrival, all 3 were cutting hair and 2 customers were waiting on Mel & Rick. Therefore, as soon as Joe was done, he invited me to sit in his chair. Joe has been cutting hair in this shop in the chair #1 slot for 45 years. Forty five years at the same job says a lot about a person, and it obvious that Joe likes to cut hair and like most barbers, he also likes a good conversation. He is a master at a "high & tight" and gave me a cut that will definitely bring me back to his shop. All 3 barbers have the old time hot shaving cream dispenser, and Joe cleaned up around my ears and my neck with the hot lather and scalpel sharp straight razor. Call me nostalgic (again), but there's no cleaner shave than a straight razor shave. The West Napoleon Barber Shop is definitely dated in its decor. But no one, including me, is coming here for eye candy. This place is all about a great cut at a great price. Speaking of the price, a haircut here, including the hot lather straight razor cleanup is only $7.00. Yeah, I'll say it agin. A haircut here is only $7.00, and I don't know of any place in the city or entire metro are that offers a $7.00 haircut. Needless to say, these guys probably all make pretty good tips, as no one is going to strike it rich giving $7.00 haircuts. I for one believe in giving a good gratuity for a job well done. Lastly, like most true barber shops, this place is closed on Sundays and Mondays. But here's a kicker for you. If you get up early for work and want a haircut before you go to work, Joe opens up at 4:40 AM on most days and I think this definitely puts him in a class of his own.
