I met Aidan upon arriving and instantly felt like I was back in Boston at my barber, but so much more. Aidan was everything you would expect when seeing his shops pics. Was a great privilege to meet him and talk. And he's from Dublin, they have Guinness on tap and he poured me a pint!!!! My new favorite barbershop. I moved to a different part of the city and was checking out other barbershops when I finally made an appointment at Aidan Gill. I'd heard about it, it's been around for a while, but I never went. I wish I did. This place is what I want. I'm tired of the overly hipster, loud guy talking barbershops that are now a dime a dozen. I want a place that doesn't try so hard and where the barbers don't say stupid offensive things that everyone can here. I want a place that's classy, comfortable, and the haircuts and beard shaves are top notch. My hair looks great, my beard is sharp, my wife is all over me now, and I bought a pair of socks and aftershave balm. What more could you ask for? Treat yourself. Go early, get a drink. This is an excellent place to find gifts for the man in your life. The staff is super friendly and helpful. I was looking for beard oil and didn't see any on the shelves so I asked about. The lady explained to me that they actually use the shave oil on beards in the barber shop, so that's what I went with. Can't really comment on the product yet because it's still under the tree. They do have testers of most of their products so you can get an idea of what you are purchasing. The cologne's smell so good! Think I'll be going back to buy some, I'd even wear them myself. They have great shaving creams, lotions, and soaps for men. If you need a neck tie, pair of patterned socks, or a book on cocktails, they have a little something for everyone. the worst hair cut i have ever had, besides not getting a shampoo i never even got shown what my hair looks like from behind with a mirror. I asked for a tidy up (i had long hair , past my shoulders) the hairdresser immediately cut 4 inches off of length. it was over in 5 minutes or less, and she then ran off to go fold towels, on the other side of the room, i was still finishing my drink. i was shook, i cant believe i paid $40 for something i hate. I am now stuck in the awkward phase of not long hair but not short hair. and now i am $40 poorer also. thanks for ruining my trip to new orleans. The next day i called them and they offered to fix it. but im too scared to lose more hair to these louts , why would i believe the next attempt is going to be better. why not do a good job in the first place? read more

Parking is easier here than at the other Adian Gill over by Harrah's Casino. This place is also the original of the two. Space-wise it's bigger and has a more "old-school" feel. Whereas two guy barbers cut your hair here, at the other one there are pretty female stylists who cut your hair. Here too they offer you a drink - water, soda, tea, beer, etc - and there are "manly" magazines left around for your browsing pleasure. Again, I think it's a bit crass to read a Playboy in public, but to each their own. As for the quality of the haircut, I must say I was happier with my cut here than at the other Adian Gill. My barber was a bit too chatty for my taste, only because I felt he wasn't able to gauge how interested I was in our line of conversation. But on the whole he gave a great cut. Ultimately I don't know if the cost of the experience was worth it - basically $50 for a cut if you include tip, but if you don't mind paying that amount, Adian Gill is certainly quality. read more

I ended up getting the shave.... 7 hot towels and continuous soothing products applied. Thank god for this! I went in with a proper beard that has not been removed in like 5 months. Never batting an eyelash at the (arguably) overpriced service I received. I came back because of your excellent staff. They knew what they were doing and they did it well. Now where are they? Jeremy? Sarah? Shelby? Nathan? You lose them, you lose me, Aidan. Greed has gotten the best of you. You charge me $40 for a cut and now want to only pay them $8 for said cut? I'm surprised people don't sniff out the pretension of this place, which according to Playboy and a few other male-centric publications is supposedly one of the barber shops in the nation. Aidan Gill reeks of this misbegotten, soft-focus nostalgia for the era of southern gentility, a romanticism that I think is best left at the door. But if you think Andy Griffith was a reality show, this just might be the place for you. In the end, it's all about the haircut, isn't it? And mine were always just okay. I was once a three-month regular, a twice-a-month customer. But for fifty dollars a pop---including tip---that just didn't add up for me. That's a hundred bucks a month to look like I got buzzered at a prison rodeo. I quickly found a better deal elsewhere (Urban Angels). I didn't mind the price, as there was an attention to detail that I found lacking in other places, but the haircut was nonetheless mediocre at best. Plus, I had to put up with guys in bow ties. I'm sorry, but bow ties: fail. Bow ties and suspenders: Def-con 1 on the pretension scale. Don't get me wrong, the atmosphere has its dusty charm, and the little shop offers some terrific gift possibilities, including rare watches, ties, and soaps, but it's still about the haircut. I think they specialize in "lawyer" haircuts, if you know what I mean. Lots of country club types sauntered in and out, guys who, oddly enough, also wore bow ties. Maybe they were related to Tucker Carlson. I felt like the blackest guy in the place, and I'm an Irish albino. Ask for "the Pelican Brief." It's their specialty. I asked the stylist if bow ties were required, and she answered humorlessly that no, they were not. They also offer you a bourbon while you wait, and a Playboy. I'm in with the bourbon, but flipping through a Playboy in public is a bit much, really. And with a bow tie on--- well, you're just looking for trouble. read more

Are you a dapper man? Then get your dapper ass over to Aidan Gill! I've been here twice, with about 4 years in between visits. I don't make it to New Orleans very often, but this place definitely left an impression on me and I knew that I had to return. This place compliments my style unlike any business I have found in my hometown of Kansas City. Equal parts barber shop and men's store, both sides of their equation are fantastic. On my first visit I treated myself to a haircut and shave. The haircut turned out excellent, a perfect blend of on-trend and classic. I looked perfectly professional but damn stylish as well! The shave...well, it was an interesting experience. I was bummed to learn that it wasn't a straight razor shave. It was a bit pricey, and I splurged for the experience more than the shave itself. That being said, it was a VERY close shave, and my face felt smoother than it has since I was 9. But paying somebody that much coin to give me a really close shave with a Gillette Mac 3 razor just seemed wasteful. The store, however, I have zero complaints! This is where I began my love affair with bow ties, and they also prompted me to start purchasing higher quality shaving supplies and accessories. They have a full wall of different creams and lotions and so-forth (and it's much more manly than that may sound). There is a nice selection of watches, as well as some pocket watches that I wish I was stylish enough to make work. There are also a number of books and desk toys and the like. If I lived in New Orleans, I would definitely go here for my hair cutting needs and would probably blow my paychecks on their merchandise. But since I live 1000 miles away, I'll have to settle for vising once every 4 years. read more

So there's this place that exists on Magazine St where just walking inside, you'll instantly grow hair on your chest and feel like chopping down a tree. Yes, you heard me! Aidan Gill is a speciality store dedicated to the manliest of men that is completely stocked with various items to help you become a proper gentleman. A wide range of shavers, brushes, creams, & shaving accessories to keep your facial hair inline. There is also an incredibly wide range of colognes available that'll you make you smell like a gentleman in no time. There's also a nice variety of accessories including bow ties, regular ties, socks, cuff links, and much more. I noticed there's also a barbershop set up out back but I saw no one there so I'm unsure if it is still in operation. Would be a brilliant touch if it was! The only downside to the store is that it is a bit pricey. I would've love to made a purchase but they were just out of my price range. Definitely worth checking out it you're after a gift for a dad, brother, grandfather, or just any male friend. read more

Aidan Gill is simultaneously the best and worst barbershop I've been to. Let's start with the good: The ambiance is second to none. Aidan is a big collector of barbershop antiques, and he has really decked the place out. It's simultaneously beautiful and fascinating. Meanwhile, the men who work there are always in bow ties and french cuffs, and the women are comparably attired. The retail portion of the shop has a wide variety of high-quality shaving accoutrements, the usual fancy shampoos and what-not, and bow ties. Really well done. Customers are greeted promptly by the friendly (but a tad snobby) receptionist, and are immediately offered a seat and a drink. Whiskey? Guinness? Checks all around. The haircuts I've had there have always been more "good" than "great," but the personality of the shop makes up for it. The only criticism of the shop, ambiance-wise, is the sink where they wash your hair. It feels, at best, like an afterthought, and has never been up to par with the rest of the shop. Now the bad. The shaves. The modestly undersold "Shave at the End of the Galaxy" is a complete farce. While they're great with the hot towels and oil massages, they insist on using a modern cartridge razor (a Gillette Mach 3, specifically -- don't let the custom handle fool you) to do the shaves. Mr. Gill authoritatively asserts that they are the finest shaving implements on the market today. I think only the Gillette corporation would agree with him on this. The general consensus among the shaving community is that, in the hands of a skilled individual, the hierarchy of shave quality is clearly Straight Razor Safety Razor .......... .......... Cartridge Razor .......... Disposable Razor It's not clear to me why Mr. Gill insists on using inferior equipment. Perhaps he and his fellow barbers do not have the hands and experience necessary to give a good straight shave? Or maybe he gets some sort of kick-back from Gillette? I have no idea. All I know is there's a serious sacrifice being made that is compromising an otherwise fantastic shaving experience. It's even more shocking when you consider that Mr. Gill clearly thinks a lot about presentation and tradition. In the end, here are my grades: Ambiance: A (Outstanding.) Personal services: A- (I docked them half a grade for slight snootiness.) Haircuts: B+ (Always good; never great.) Shaves: Incomplete. (If they offered a skilled straight shave on top of the current rituals, it would be an easy A. And I don't give many of those out.) In the end, the shop is definitely worth a stop, but they need to get rid of the cartridge razors if they want their "Shave at the End of the Galaxy" to be at, well, the right end. read more

The last time I went, there was a scheduling issue. They actually had booked me one week in the future. Yet no one figured this out until halfway through my haircut, when the person who was actually booked for that time showed up (late, I might add). They made me feel terrible for the mistake, as if I was intentional in showing up at the wrong time and refusing to consider that it may have been their fault in the scheduling error. The cut here wasn't amazing or at least not what I expected but the atmosphere was really cool. I will say that you pay more for the atmosphere then the cut but its still cool. Lizzy is really friendly and loves talking about anything you could possibly want to talk about. The Good: This place feels manly and it smells great. They have all kinds of cool and interesting things on display and on sale. They offer you either a guinness or a shot of jameson after you get a shave, which feels great going down after the hot towel ritual. The Bad: The actual shave isn't that good. It's comfortable, but I can get a closer shave at home. As someone mentioned below, they use a triple blade cartridge which is just inferior to a straight razor or a safety blade. Speaking of safety blades: THEY DO NOT SELL THEM! How can a shave shop not sell safety blades? They also don't sell proraso, which is a popular Italian shaving cream. The Ugly: They have a lot of attitude for a shaving specialty store that doesn't sell safety blades. read more

Not only were they out of stock for most of what I wanted, but the salesman (who had a terrific shave) also told me that a strop doesn't sharpen a razor--WTF. Most products seemed ridiculously overpriced. Mr. Gill was friendly, even though I was dressed like a hobo, and showed me around the place while talking about shaving, but I think he bullshitted me, too. He did invite me to touch his face, though--smooth as a baby's bottom! Was he hitting on me? Overall, next time I want a $35 haircut, that's where I'll go (the women are beautiful). I visit Aidan Gill For Men every two to three months to get my hair cut. For many, many years I kept my hair long. Very long. Down to my waist long. But now I've got my degree and need to look professional, so I keep my hair trimmed and groomed (or at least I try). So, why go to Aidan Gill? First there is Nathan. If you go, ask for him and tell him Dennis sent you. He's amazingly friendly, highly skilled, and a fantastic gentleman. When I walk in he's always got a warm greeting and a cold beer (or whiskey) for me, even if I'm early and he's not ready for me. On the occasions where I had to wait five or ten I have my choice of browsing an impressive selection of men's grooming materials, cuff-links, watches, razors, etc. or sitting in the back doing some reading and drinking that cold beer I mentioned. Yes, the haircut costs a little under $50 after you include the tip but it's not just a haircut. Most men are used to going to a barber, getting snipped and then leaving. When I go my money includes not just a haircut but a shampoo and styling so I can see the complete final product. Women pay the same amount for the same service and no one complains it's too much. This is a bit of pampering for myself and I'm not afraid to admit it. Nathan does an amazing job and listens to what I want. He hasn't let me down yet. Aidan Gill is also known for the hot towel shave. Before I give my opinion I think it best that I mention that I wet shave at home. That means I use a badger bristle brush, wool fat soap, and a double edged safety razor. I get a clean, close shave pretty much every day at home so it takes a bit to really impress me. Aidan Gill's shave includes a half dozen or so rounds or steamed towels and skin conditioners between them. It's amazing comfortable and relaxing and does wonders for my face. Now the one thing I could complain about is the actual shave is done with a Mach 3 razor, not a straight razor or safety razor. However, the detail and ritual of the everything else really puts it above a simple Mach 3 shave at home. So, is it worth your money? In my opinion, yes. I understand it's not for everyone, but it's certainly for me. read more

It's eclectic and chic this storefront and in the back is where all the big boys hang. Make sure you set up an appointment in advance to get your shave (and drink) on! I've been here twice and wont go back. The first time, I got a decent cut although not exactly what I wanted. The second time, I felt like the barber butchered my hair. None of the barbers who cut my hair even had a clue what pomade is, or how to cut for a pompadour. Any decent barber shop that works on men's hair should know at least the basics of pomade and real mens traditional cuts. Fortunately for me I had the good fortune to be in southern California and close enough to a true gentlemens barbershop and got a proper cut, thank you Hawleywoods. I didn't get a shave or haircut (and frankly the $50 gave me sticker shock even though I am grom L.A. - I can get a REALLY GOOD barber to give me a REALLY GOOD cut in Hollywood for $35 with tip). I did like the space though and looking through their collection of really old shaving ephemera. Plus I found a pair of cufflinks with secret compartments I have put on my permanent wish list.
