Tanana Valley is a nice little campground tucked into a patch of forest right off the road. As an…read moreout-of-town'er working in Fairbanks over the summer, I used their tenting sites to car-camp in my Toyota 4-Runner while waiting to move into my rental house. At $25 you can't beat it, especially considering the astronomical hotel prices in Fairbanks. To that end, the campground served it's purpose in my "just to get by" situation. Unfortunately the shower facilities were closed during my stay because they were being renovated. I wasn't happy to discover the closed-off showers & restrooms because it was't mentioned on the website. As a matter of fact, the website still touts the showers as an available amenity, and the reservation confirmation email includes the entry codes for the digital combination locks on the shower building doors. It wasn't until my attempts to get into the shower building when I learned that they were closed for renovation. (The combo code was no good). That irked me, but it was't a deal-breaker. I had access to showers at my work as well as a local gym, so I adapted and kept on camping. This probably won't be the situation for other campers though, so the campsite owners are leaving themselves wide-open for confrontations with rightly-infuriated customers. Don't worry about trying to use the Wi-FI. If you do happen to be in an area of the campsite where it actually connects to your device, it does little more than infuriate you with an unusable snail's pace. Then it kicks you off and tells you that you have the wrong password. Then the password magically works again just long enough to disappoint you with its slow uselessness. But hey. It's a campground. Don't get on the internet. Build a campfire and swat mosquitos like mother nature intended. The main area of the campground, (mostly RV sites and a few tent sites), is clean and quiet. The double-letter tenting sites are in a separate section, much closer to the road. I skipped around the different tenting sites from evening to evening just to check things out. I prefer the single-letter sites that are in the main campground area, but the double-letter sites aren't too bad either. They all served their purpose of giving me a quiet place to park so I could get a good night's sleep. If the place had been much more than $25 for a tent site, I doubt I would have stayed there very long.

Yes their hours have been a bit crazy due to the gal that normally worked the office has had COVID for the last 9 days! We stayed there for 5 nights and it was great. Yes they aren't brand new facilities but the laundry was good (was just $2 wash and $2 dry). It's close to everything! Was pretty quiet as there's only 30 sites and half of them are non-electric.

EVERYTHING!! Less than 6' in many spaces. Some spaces, like the ones we always get put into) are so (narrow with single trees in between, that you can't use your awning. The hookups for water and sewage are weird for our setup and cross over, it's not well thought out. And there is very limited room for an extra vehicle if it's not a compact car. I always struggle to fit my truck in our spot without blocking the folks next to us. Or sticking out into the road. I hate being rude, so I am really particular about making certain I'm not in anyone else's space. The staff have always been helpful for us, no complaints there. All said I would not stay here unless A; you're the type who don't like camp fires and privacy OR B; you're only staying so you can see the sites and have a safe place to sleep at night.

The Granite Tors are granite towers, pinnacles, and slabs that crown Munson Ridge, the alpine ridge at the head of Rock Creek, southwest of the Chena River." These tors are large, isolated rock outcrops. They are very trippy-looking. They formed millions of years ago when molten rock pushed upward and cooled before it reached the earth's surface I loved this park when I stopped by on my way to the Hot Springs. It was beautiful and well-maintained. The state of Alaska has been sprucing up their State Parks and it really shows here. I gave Granite Tors 5 Yelp stars because the trail and hike is scenic and doable for most, if not all levels of hiker. Tors trail campground accommodates all sorts of outdoor enthusiasts, from tent campers to those with deluxe recreational vehicles. Tors Trailhead is in the Tors Trail Campground. There is a day use fee required at the Tors trailhead parking lot. No day use fee is required at the trailhead if a camping fee is paid. Granite Tors is an ADA-approved Facility and encompasses 254,080 acres. There are 24 Campsites and no RV size limit. The Camping Limit is 15 days. A gorgeous place for sure!

We had an appointment for 2pm-3:30pm. In reality we were a couple minutes late and after photo ops/changing it was closer to 2-4pm. Allow yourself closer to 45-60 minutes driving from Fairbanks in winter when it's slippery and icy roads. As of February 2025 the Google GPS was accurate although I would recommend screenshotting instructions just in case. Going back home I had trouble finding a signal until a little further down. I really appreciate they had extra gear! I didn't find snow pants at Walmart. But they had snow bibs, parkas, snow boots, gloves etc. There was another small group of 4 at our time slot. But each tour is 2 people. One person gets to sit and the other can stand up to "drive" in the back. We started off with a short oral history of Alaskan huskies and dog sledding in Alaska. Then we had 10-15 minutes to play with the dogs. Most of them were very friendly. If you gently call their name they'll come out of their house for pets. Some were a little shy (pandemic pups or naturally reserved). Then we were shown a demonstration on how to stand on the sled and use the drag mat and the brake. Next was a demo on how to harness the dogs. Our tour guide was Jesse! He was awesome. I really enjoyed talking to him. He was very patient answering my questions about his dogs. After we personally harnessed one dog each Jesse took care of the rest and chose the order of the sled hook up. We stopped about 2-3 times for photo ops. During the first stop (about the halfway point) you get the option of switching from the sitting sled to the standing driving sled. Not very strenuous. But lots of fun! Highly recommend the snow pants in winter. I took a two steps off the path and ended up calf deep in snow. The dogs start barking and getting a little impatient when you stop too long. They really are well taken care of and love to run! Jesse unharnessed the dogs at the end of the tour. We were able to go into the cabin to take off gear. There's also merchandise, hot cocoa, and please tip your tour guides. They even include Venmo QR codes which is perfect for our increasingly cashless society. Highly recommend Black Spruce for dog sledding in the Fairbanks area!
