i decided i needed a quick getaway over on this side of the mitten. was really looking forward to this. anyways.. i got my room key & rode the elevator up to my room. this room's pullout couch had what appeared to be a white substance (leftover children?)... i was horrified. then i turned around & the walls were worn down so much it looked like our walls when grandpa ate our walls last thanksgiving eve. the walls are worn down to metal!!!! and don't even get me started with the mariot station on the tv. what is that?! next time i'll be better off sleeping in one of the storage units in the parking lot.

    Found in bed. Pretzel

Ok, first thing that upset me was driving in circles trying to find the entrance to this place. The hotel is set off the main highway and you drive through the Olive Garden. They have the worlds smallest sign by the road. So small I could not read Fairfield until I exited my car to take the picture. Hey Marriott??? Put a sign up a human can read. I love Fairfield brand and beds with great pillows. That is why I stay here. But After reading some past reviews of bugs in bed I decided I will inspect my bed before going to sleep. I was in room 333 corner room with two Queen beds. I pull back the covers to look closely. Pillows and head area look find. Then as I pull back more I find a piece of a pretzel in the bed, along with some hairs and other items I could not identify. Nothing crawling but I moved on to the other bed. 2nd bed looked fine. So I write this off as bad housekeeping. Someone was in that bed and sheets never changed. Never thought I would see that in a Marriott chain hotel.

I had a really nice time during my one night stay here. The decor is very new and modern with bright colors and the staff was very attentive and nice. The king suite was not as big as embassy suites, but larger then say a comfort inn. When I checked in they said they needed to charge an extra $20 and with a debit card it take a little longer to get that back after our stay. I was unaware - and not prepared so offered to pay the 20 in cash. They accommodated me and ended up not making me pay that at all which was convenient. They allowed me to check in early - and the bed was comfortable! They also call when you get up and ask if everything is okay, which is a true five star must! So great job! Will return!

I am a Marriott/SPG Elite member and was hoping this was a renovated, clean hotel based on photos. Unfortunately it's a bit old and out dated. Lobby is nice but rooms are not. I also found a bug in my room which is never a good sign... checked out after I found the 2nd one in bed. I would suggest some updates to rooms (carpet, linens, curtains) and insect control.

This is a report from Ecolab showing no signs of bed bugs during our stay in room 103 on 7/28/16
    Shannon S.

Regarding Bed Bugs: I stayed in room 103 the night of July 28th. The next morning I woke up, and found some bites around my ankles. I had been out the night before in sandals, so they must have been mosquito bites that I hadn't noticed until the next morning. I am positive my stay at Fairfield Inn and Suites in Grand Rapids was free of bed bugs. Once I returned home, Friday evening, I saw the yelp review from a 6/2/16 showing the room on the third floor had had bed bugs. This made me really nervous, as at this point I wasn't sure where my bites had come from. I called the Marriot customer service line, explained my concerns, and they put me in touch with a supervisor at their corporate offices who assured me they took bed bugs seriously. The corporate office explained that they hold their franchises, such as this Fairfield Inn, to the same standards as any Marriot and that they would ensure proper resolve if bed bugs were found. As soon as I told the Fairfield Inn I had stayed at that I suspected bed bugs, they shut down the room I had stayed in until a full investigation was done to show the room was clear. On the following Monday, I got a call from Joe H., the General Manager. I can assure you he is as thorough with customer concerns in-person as he is in responding to yelpers online. He explained to me that they had Ecolab come out immediately after bed bugs were found on the third floor in late-May/early-June. He explained that once they find bed bugs, Ecolab treats the room, the rooms next to it, and rooms on the floor below. They also come back (I think he said once a month) periodically to inspect other areas of the hotel to ensure that no bugs have spread to new areas of the hotel. In our case, Ecolab came out Monday, and I was told they were conducting a two-fold inspection with dogs (?) and by checking for a chemical released by the bugs. Joe and his maintenance team also did their own preliminary check for signs of bugs. I have attached in the photos an image of the Ecolab report. It's not written very clearly, the report indicates that absolutely NO BED BUGS were found. Yay! I appreciated that Joe took my concerns seriously enough to shut down the room for 3 days, bring in Ecolab, and because of the stress of the whole ordeal (including some other extraneous customer service issues that had ensued) he even refunded the room for us. I have mixed feelings about causing a false alarm, but the best thing I can do in this situation is to share with you that this General Manager is clearly in-control of the situation, that you can rest assured that this room is proven to be clear, and that this hotel is active in ensuring a comfortable, bed-bug free stay. Bed bugs are scary. Joe validated that, and was professional and expedient in alleviating my concerns. Thank you, Joe!

There are several treadmills, a few ellipticals (my favorite), a whole area dedicated to free weights, and lots of other equipment. The fitness center is a rectangular glass box that faces both the pickleball courts and the pool, so you get an interesting view no matter where you're working out. Yes, this hotel has pickleball courts. It's $35 per hour to book a court. When we were there, there were Pickleball Players with a capital P tearing up the courts, so I'm thinking this isn't a place to bring your toddler to throw balls. These pickleball courts are for people who want to really play. Our hotel room was just fine. It was a little small for a two-queen-bed room, and the window faced the back of another building. But it was clean, and the shower worked, and the beds were comfy. One thing that I love is that housekeeping will automatically refresh your room, and you don't even have to beg. The hotel is huge, and there were a couple of big conferences going on while we were there, so there were lots of people milling about, but it never felt overly crowded. The first floor of the hotel feels like an indoor mall: there's a coffee shop, two restaurants, a wine shop and a gift shop. If you go up to the 27th floor, you'll find MDRD, a modern Spanish restaurant with a rooftop bar that overlooks the Grand River. This is not the place to take kids -- this feels like an adult-only space. They also have a dress code: smart casual. The adults in our party enjoyed a couple of drinks (wine and beer and bourbon) at the bar, and it was cool to just sit and watch the traffic on the Grand River bridge crawl by like ants. Parking is valet or a parking garage that's around the corner. I try to avoid valet when I can, for personal reasons, so we did self-park, which was no big deal.

I booked a room with (what I thought was) 2 queen beds for a stay with my mom. To our surprise, it actually had two bedrooms, one with 2 full beds and another with a single queen or king. Both had en suite bathrooms. Both had TVs. Plus we had our living/dining shared space. I needed to spend a bit of time during our stay working, and WiFi was strong and worked well in our room. Breakfast was better than expected, with a small hot foods bar, breads/bagels, fruit, yogurt, and lots of toppings and sauces (think jams, jellies, salsa, hot sauce, jalapeño slices, pickled red onion, etc). Simple selection of coffee, tea, and juice as well. Definitely did the trick. AC unit was on the louder side, and view out the window was a little odd (directly floor level with what seemed like an interior carpeted court? we were on 3rd level). But the plus side of this was no street noise in our room. Parking's a little on the expensive side, $38 per day in the adjacent public parking garage. It is nice to park directly in front of the hotel entrance though (3rd floor). This hotel was conveniently located, easy to find getting off the freeway and very walkable to shops, restaurants, etc. With the Hilton app, I was able to check in and check out on my phone, and use the app to use the elevators and unlock our room door.

I'd actually get sprayed every time because I had to step into the shower to reach the water. Also, in the lobby, most hotels have coffee available for their guests. There was an empty counter near the elevators that would be perfect. Sometimes it's just nice to offer free coffee to your guests that tastes better than the pods in the room. As Bonvoy website, app, & other sites may not be updated appropriately The Marriott Courtyard lobby is clean and inviting. The front desk "seems" to attempt their best to accommodate and provide excellent service. I did over hear the front desk young lady call me "crazy". But, I'm okay with that - after all, who isn't? We stayed in the executive king suite on the 7th floor, was spacious & clean. Gorgeous view to the west. Housekeeping did an excellent job - going above & beyond our requests of extra linens, pillows, blankets & setting up our roll-away I can not emphasize enough to confirm with phone calls to the front desk because the Bonvoy website/app is not always accurate of what amenities, parking, promotions, and packages actually include. All can be quite confusing to someone who has not visited this hotel. Previously been in the industry for 20+ years. I see this as an opportunity for them to nickel and dime you to death. The Bonvoy website & app allows you to select 2 adults & 2 children (17 & under) for a room - yet, selecting the breakfast "package" only includes 2 adults & 2 kids (12 & under) .... My number one choice will always be the JW Marriot for a downtown GR hotel! Location is great, price is the same, the service is always above and beyond, and you never have to doubt the quality of the linens lol @Kylene G - it's spelled Melisa , not Melissa ** also, watch pending vs actual charges for your final cost - upon checkin there was a $45 per night (odd amount) deposit required ....
