This park is substantial in size! It has two boat ramps (north and south), at least three fishing piers, hike/bike trails, one of the largest swim areas I've seen at a State Park, at least twenty picnic tables in the day use area, a picture-perfect swing set by the swim area, three camping loops (each includes a restroom with at least two showers per restroom), a cemetery, historic well, amphitheater - the park covers so much area that it takes around 15-20 minutes to travel from one end to the other following the park speed limits. Our first visit to this park included a first-time, somewhat terrifying spotting of a feral hog on Bird Blind trail which was creepily overgrown, eerily vacant (reminiscent of a "ghost town"- it gave us a spidey-sense...not to mention a few cobwebs we stepped through) and full of rutted dried ground. The reason this was a bit terrifying is that a park ranger at another park had recently elaborated to me just how dangerous feral hogs can be--especially if you accidentally come between them and their young! Thankfully, we were able to keep a respectfully fearful distance from the hog we spotted and must not have come between it and its young cause we survived! Following Bird Blind loop, we took a short hike on the nature trail where I was relentlessly harassed by a horsefly which regularly buzzed by my ears and then landing on me--I fully grabbed the bug at one point trying to swat her away which freaked me out more. That night I learned that female horseflies diet on mammal (including human) blood which helped me to feel justified in my drop of spirits and frightened outburst on the hike. Despite having bug spray on, my sweat, bright shirt, movement, exposed skin, breath and simply being a living being with blood in my veins...made me a prime target for that lady horsefly's advances--she wanted to slice my tender skin and have my blood for her dinner. Thankfully we were able to redeem our first visit with a mother deer and baby fawn sighting (seeing that feral hog was pretty cool too), alligator gar spotting, sunset float and picnic dinner, and refreshingly cold showers before our drive back to Dallas! On our second visit, we did not return to either trail (maybe worth a try in cooler, less COVIDy weather/times) and instead stuck to the water as our main activity which made for a much more pleasant experience. I was even able to paddle over to the swim area buoys and observe a few terns and one double-created cormorant closer than I think I've been to most any wild birds in my life! We were then treated to sightings of a white egret and two great blue herons just before and after sunset which flew to the nearly-vacant swim area to hunt! To top all of that off, we took a small, post-sunset walk from one fishing pier (south boat ramp to the other-in day use area) which was enhanced by friendly small talk with fisherpeople on that South Boat Ramp pier/dock, a random, psychedelic arrow in the middle of the woods, a tribe of adorable scavenging trash pandas and two little boys exuberant over their dad's catch of a sizable catfish just as it got dark! This warmed my heart more than I can say--seeing a family making these precious memories and making me long to fish with my far-away dad again like old times! read more

What a great place. I tried this because it was the only park we could get into. The reviews were go so we booked. Awesome place. Camp grounds are nice, spread out and you have plenty of seclusion. Playground for kids, volleyball court and swim beach. We kayaked and fished, hiked and hit the store. Staff were all super. Highly recommended- we pull a 30' trailer. Side note - one dump station lines take too long. Go the loves at I-45 pay $10 much quicker. read more

We stopped in using the online reservation system to reserve a day pass and spent the day hiking. One of the hiking trails was closed: Big Brown Creek Trail. Even with the closed trail the other options were beautiful. The trails we used were well maintained other than the birdwatching trail which was a disappointment. This fact plus the condition of the restrooms (the only one open to the public) at the boat dock are the reason for the 4 stars instead of 5. One of the campsite restrooms was open and it was in very good, clean, condition. We drove around all of the campsite areas and none of the sites were in a "bad" spot plus all looked very well maintained. We will return for more hiking and overnight camping soon! read more

Fairfield Lake State Park was a pretty state park and I didn't see anyone else, so it was perfect walking through nature and seeing the sun setting across the lake, so beautiful. I took the Nature Trail and came across lots of deer. The downside to going when I did was hitting all the spider webs under the trees. Relaxing park to visit. read more

Just being here gets me feeling all girl-scout-ish! This is a huge state park that has RV camping areas, camping sites with electrical and water hookups, and campsites with only water. We booked for a rather well-packed weekend, so we ended up having to take a site that was water only. I was originally sad that we didn't have electrical hookups, but was later pleased that we weren't dealing with crap like fans and radios. It was just the campfire, stars, and us. We had a large group camping with us and one spot easily accommodated 4 tents full of people with plenty of space for setting up and chairs. There was a picnic table too, but it took a bit of cleaning all the spiders from it before anyone really felt comfortable using it. Ahhhh, nature. The restrooms were directly across the field from our particular site, so that was especially convenient for late-night restroom breaks and morning showers. What I loved!!: *Lovely walking trails, and a bird-watching trail that led to one of the prettiest flat-land lookout points I've ever seen. *Cheap overnight camping rates. *The Office sells ice (but not much else) *The lake is the real star of this place. Warm, warm water and gorgeous vistas make this one of my favorite lakes I've ever set a toe in. *The fishing pier and boat dock are great places to just catch some scenery without getting in the water. What I could do without: *Bugs everywhere. It's nature, and Texas (i know) but there were spiders on the picnic tables, anthills at the campsites, mosquitoes trying to drink every last drop of my blood, and wasps in the bathrooms. *There was one RV who was parked in the "water only" campsite down the road and had hooked up a large generator. It was deafening when you were anywhere within the vicinity of it, and if I were one of the people who had a space next to them I would have been upset. Maybe the staff wasn't notified, but I would have loved to see them shut them down. read more

Excellent park! The travel trailer pads look new and level. Beautiful trees, pads are nicely spread out. Bathrooms are old and a bit dirty but they have soap unlike other state parks and the shower stalls are nice! We just stopped in for the day but we will be back to camp next year for sure! read more

We have camped twice here. Its a great place for us to meet our friends who live in Dallas. Its about half way between Houston and Dallas. Each campground can fit 3 tents. You can get one with or without a power outlet. All have water, fire pit and picnic table. They are all pretty close to the lake. There is also a boat dock if you want to do some boating. The bathrooms are very clean. I have never stayed more than 2 nights so I haven't used the showers but they are clean. Bring your own soap though. There is toilet paper. If you forget anything there is a Brookshire Brothers on the way in in Fairfield. If there is a burn ban you can still have a fire if you have it in a grill. We will be back! read more

We went camping here on Memorial Day weekend '16. The rangers were quite helpful. Check-in was quick and easier than most. One of the cool thing about this park is the vending machine firewood. It is also veteran owned. The price of wood is reasonable. The swimming area is quite clean. This lake is large and water is a bit cold but clear. There also tons of mosquitoes. So dont forget to bring a bug spray. One thing that I realy dont like about this park is dirty bathroom. As a frequent state parks and national park camper, restroom and shower areas are the most important and determine the frequent visits. And at this park, it seems that there was no staffs, no up keeping with bathrooms ( no toilet paper, dirty floors and limited showers) but on the plus side, hot and cold water work brilliantly. I will definitely come back for a day trip but most likely will not camp overnight. read more

We went Nov 2018 enjoying the cooler weather. I think we may have missed the fall colors but it looked like it could have been pretty. Stayed in the Post Oak area which was very nice. Generous spaces with wooded privacy. The spaces on the lake were lake view only -no lake access at all. That was very disappointing. We have a kayak that we have enjoyed launching right at our campsite at other parks. Looked like a great boat launch area. Since we only stayed 1 night we managed to get in a nice hike the following morning. Very pretty with the view of the lake. Woodsy and natural. Met only a few people out on the trails. The park was supposed to be full however it never felt that way at all. Biking was a bit limited for us at least. But if you are an avid bike rider, the hills coming into the park were challenging. For less of a challenge you could ride around your camp area and the others just to get out and look around. We had no phone service at all. Yikes, would have liked a heads up. Though the park was really lovely and well kept, clean and quiet, just for the fact there was no convenient assess to the lake (for us) I would say we probably will not come back. read more

As far as state parks go, this wasn't bad. We went camping over the Fourth of July weekend. Had some issues with neighboring campers using generators all night with bright lights and up all night until 3am talking and kids screaming and playing (quiet hours are 10pm-6am). Needless to say, I traveled 4 hours to experience peace and quiet and was not pleased with that. However, we were late arrivals, picked a great camp spot (the noisy neighbors arrived after us). We weren't interested in the lake, which was busy every day we were there, we were more interested in hiking and exploring the park. Unfortunately, the hiking trails are not that great. The perimeter hiking trail (Dockery Trail), was on the map, but when we started the hike, it was overgrown and almost impossible to determine where the path really was. There was even a few portions that required us to walk on the side of the road because the trail ended. We pretty much just followed the fence line and ended up at the lake and a picnic bench, which was nice. Overall, the staff was fantastic, the facilities were good (not sure why people have such a difficult time putting toilet paper in the toilet and not on the floor!?!), and once the noise makers were gone, the night sky was beautiful and starry. read more

Very quiet park during the week.. we were here Tuesday & Wednesday night. Freshly mowed campsite & trails. The bathrooms smelled & were clean. We didn't have much luck fishing but I did see a deer!! We camped in #85 since it was recommended by another reviewer.. nice spot! We had a nice level pull through campsite with a view of the lake. Burn ban this week so no campfire. We camped here with our Dad-Daughter YMCA group this last weekend. It was our first time here and we have been to many TX state parks over the years. It rained all weekend so we did not see all there is to see, but we enjoyed the park and will come back this summer for fishing and more fun. read more

I am a big fan of this park as the trails are nice, staff is great! Very helpful! The park is well-kept, the bathrooms and sites are clean. The sites are a good size, enough for a few tents. The only issue I had with this park? NO PHONE RECEPTION. I have been here many times and have never had this issue. They need to get a tower up or something, around there. With elderly parents at home, this would be an issue for me to come back to this park. read more

Our family camped at sites 56 and 57 near the volleyball court and playground. These were great sites that had water and electricity. We were there Memorial Day weekend and all of the sites were booked, and even still the place did not feel crowded. I haven't been tent camping in more than 15 years, so I forgot about the bathroom aspect of camping. Having to drive to the bath house when nature called was a drag (I have feet problems, so walking was not an option). I will be investing in my own portable potty for the next trip. The bathrooms were clean in the morning but as the day goes on and folks don't flush their toilet tissue and it's left on the floor, well that is a drag. But the park does have clean bathrooms. It's the campers who trash the place. The showers were nice. Nice hot water (if you need it - we were hot, so a cold shower was welcomed). The bathhouse near us was near campsite 73, and for the women's showers there locking doors and a shower curtain stall. A rule of thumb is to always wear shower shoes. We did that, and the showers were clean and it was nice to know we could take a shower in a clean environment. It gets very, very, very humid when folks use the hot water for showers, so be prepared to be very sticky after toweling off and trying to put on dry clothes. Park rangers were everywhere. I was very impressed by this. We took the boat out and it was just a fantastic lake. I love it there. The play ground has swings and a climbing dome. And there is a volley ball court. And plenty of space for a game of football, baseball, etc. We went to the swimming part of the lake and it as very nice. I don't much care for the squishy mud you walk through at the shore line in order to get in the lake, but once you're over that, you are good to go. We took our kayaks and it was wonderful. The campsites are great, the lake is great, the bathrooms are clean, the park is well maintained (I saw absolutely no trash lying around the park), the boat launch is great - this is a great park for chilling out. The only trash I saw at the park was by people not cleaning up after themselves in the ladies room, and someone let a diaper into the lake. ??? You will find folks like that at any park, unfortunately. But the park was absolutely not riddled with litter. Our family had a great time; our kids loved it. We will gladly return to this park. read more

Pretty land and lake but small and kinda boring. The reason this Texas State Park is getting a 1star review is due to the a$$hole State Park policeman and park rangers that harassed visitors all day and all night. We were eyeballed continuously and we witnessed one cop in particular harass us and several other campers. I personally was accused of drinking alcohol even though I had a beer in a plastic cup like 99.9% of Texas State Park patrons know to do. The same cop came and searched our pedal boat for alcohol and asked our female group members where the two males had gone because he had been watching us from the other side of the lake with binoculars, he admitted. He checked the campers next to us for alcohol by illegally going through their coolers and even searched their vehicles. Ever hear of unlawful search copper? He even gave a camper a breathalyzer test as he pulled into his campsite because the passenger had an open container. We should have recorded this guy and gotten him fired. We will never be back and will never advise any of our friends to go there. Be warned if you go there: he's a cop not a ranger and looks like he's about 20. read more

we stayed for the weekend. parts of the park were really beautiful. unfortunately they put us in post oak (soon to be renovated, it needs it). that part of the park is really run down. I nick named it "the ghetto" because dogs were running around not on a leash, chasing our truck as we drove by. People across the road from us walked right through our campsite to get to the lake, within 3 feet of where we were sitting. The bathrooms were in good shape, they were just dirty. Dead and live bugs everywhere. floors were dirty looked like they haven't been cleaned in a while. I will say the staff was wonderful. they addressed our complaints and were very friendly and helpful. we will go back again but we will not stay in the same area. we rode through cooks ferry and it was a world of difference in the 2 areas. this area was well maintained, had 2 camp host sites where post oak had none read more

Good old boy system. Locals get priority to all other guests. People walk through your site without asking. We had people from across walking to get to their boat they parked at our water site without ever asking. This seems to be a common occurrence that is widely accepted. If you value any sort of respect or privacy or don't want your animals to be antagonized by rude people don't go here. The park management doesn't seem to enforce the issue. As I said, it appears to happen so frequently and if you talk to any of the staff about it they make you feel unwelcomed because that is what is expected for people be able to do. We saw someone park their boat, walk through a campsite to the bathroom and they weren't even from the state park. People were just rude. Also the shoreline was not clean and the bathrooms were a disaster. I will not be back here. Worst camping experience of my entire life at a state park in Texas and I've been to almost all the state parks in the state of Texas. We left a day early because the people across from us were so awful and got our dogs all riled up by walking through the campsite. Awful!!!!! read more
