Only hiked the scenic trail + nature loop, so not reviewing camping or anything. Fantastic trail. Gorgeous scenery, lots of wildlife and neat plants. Looks like they're developing more offshoots and loops as well. Highly recommend stopping by to get our into nature if you're in the area.

Fairfield Lake State Park was a pretty state park and I didn't see anyone else, so it was perfect walking through nature and seeing the sun setting across the lake, so beautiful. I took the Nature Trail and came across lots of deer. The downside to going when I did was hitting all the spider webs under the trees. Relaxing park to visit.

Just being here gets me feeling all girl-scout-ish! This is a huge state park that has RV camping areas, camping sites with electrical and water hookups, and campsites with only water. We booked for a rather well-packed weekend, so we ended up having to take a site that was water only. I was originally sad that we didn't have electrical hookups, but was later pleased that we weren't dealing with crap like fans and radios. It was just the campfire, stars, and us. We had a large group camping with us and one spot easily accommodated 4 tents full of people with plenty of space for setting up and chairs. There was a picnic table too, but it took a bit of cleaning all the spiders from it before anyone really felt comfortable using it. Ahhhh, nature. The restrooms were directly across the field from our particular site, so that was especially convenient for late-night restroom breaks and morning showers. What I loved!!: *Lovely walking trails, and a bird-watching trail that led to one of the prettiest flat-land lookout points I've ever seen. *Cheap overnight camping rates. *The Office sells ice (but not much else) *The lake is the real star of this place. Warm, warm water and gorgeous vistas make this one of my favorite lakes I've ever set a toe in. *The fishing pier and boat dock are great places to just catch some scenery without getting in the water. What I could do without: *Bugs everywhere. It's nature, and Texas (i know) but there were spiders on the picnic tables, anthills at the campsites, mosquitoes trying to drink every last drop of my blood, and wasps in the bathrooms. *There was one RV who was parked in the "water only" campsite down the road and had hooked up a large generator. It was deafening when you were anywhere within the vicinity of it, and if I were one of the people who had a space next to them I would have been upset. Maybe the staff wasn't notified, but I would have loved to see them shut them down.

Lot 85 - perfect for sunsets!

GREAT park!!! We love the pull in spots on the water to fully appreciate the view!!! Great trails, but only good for biking if you know what you're doing. Otherwise hike them. Also, great sized lots!!

    Really nice level pads!

Excellent park! The travel trailer pads look new and level. Beautiful trees, pads are nicely spread out. Bathrooms are old and a bit dirty but they have soap unlike other state parks and the shower stalls are nice! We just stopped in for the day but we will be back to camp next year for sure!

We booked seats in the Presidential Car, "Miss Joyce," and the experience was outstanding from beginning to end. The car features a comfortable mix of couches and chairs, with seating selected when you book your tickets. It created a relaxed atmosphere that made the four-hour excursion feel special without being overly formal. Our train attendant, Miss Joyce, was absolutely wonderful. She was warm, welcoming, and attentive throughout the trip, and it's easy to see why the car proudly bears her name. When we arrived at our seats, each passenger had a complimentary bottle of water and a snack box filled with watermelon, grapes, pretzels, and cheese cubes. The trip began with a champagne toast for the adults and sparkling apple cider for those who preferred it, which was a fun touch that made the experience feel like an occasion. Additional drinks, candy, and popcorn were available for purchase throughout the ride, and the attendants happily took orders and kept a running tab, making everything very convenient. During the stop in Rusk, we had time to stretch our legs and enjoy lunch. A converted railcar serves as a concession stand, offering items like hot dogs, nachos, chicken salad sandwiches, hoagies, and pulled pork sandwiches, with the option to purchase meals that include chips and a drink. There are picnic tables available, or you can take your lunch back to the train while it's parked at the station. We later learned that meal pre-orders are available, although we didn't notice that information when booking our tickets. The return trip to Palestine was a little quicker but just as enjoyable. From departure at 11:00 a.m. until our return around 3:00 p.m., the entire excursion was relaxing, scenic, and very well organized. If you're looking for a unique family outing in East Texas, we highly recommend upgrading to the Presidential Car. Between the comfortable seating, thoughtful amenities, excellent service, and beautiful scenery, it was an experience we'll remember for a long time.

My wife and I drove up from Austin for an overnight trip to Palestine, Texas, to take the evening…read moredinner train ride on the Texas State Railroad. We sat in the skylight car. Our experience was okay, but just okay. The train car was comfortable, though noticeably dated and in need of some freshening up. The bathroom was unpleasant -- no soap, no paper towels -- and it felt like the cars hadn't received any real attention in years. The train ride itself was pleasant enough, but too long for what it offered. The scenery consists mostly of trees lining both sides of the track, with occasional glimpses of meadows. Nothing dramatic. The train crept along at a snail's pace -- more, I suspect, to fill time than for any safety reasons. The midpoint stop was the highlight of the trip. We had dinner with live music in a lovely setting near a small lake -- genuinely enjoyable. However, the scheduled 1¼-hour stop stretched to nearly 1¾ hours, as we sat on the train for almost 30 minutes without moving before heading back. We arrived over 15 minutes later than scheduled. A few other notes: the train has no Wi-Fi, and the entire three-hour ride is accompanied by piped-in 1940s big band music. The first 30 minutes were fine; after that, it became tedious. Overall, I'd give this experience a 3 out of 5 -- and that's being generous, given the price.
