A family-owned business, I was able to take a tour of the farm with Mr. Huang himself. He showed us the greenhouses filled with citrus trees, flowering plants, herbs, air plants, and succulents, vegetable fields, fruit tree orchards, and even bee hives! The high standards and passion for sharing knowledge is palpable and I could especially see how this would be an especially great place to stop by to pick up high quality Chinese New Year fruit trees and flowers for amazing prices (they even have my fave, the rare Taiwanese yellow magnolia and dude, $1 pots!). I'd love to return in the summer to pick veggies with my kiddos, also think it's awesome that they carry rare Asian plants (I'm a bit of a succulent and air plants fan and they have varieties - even albino ones! - that I've never seen before!), harvest their own seeds, and are open to experimenting on creating new varietals

The indoor greenhouse complex is gigantic, over 13 acres worth, plus another 65 acres of outdoor cultivation. They claim to have the largest selection of succulent plants in NJ, and I don't doubt it. It's worth the trip just to check out the enormity of the operation. Since today is the first day of spring, I went to Hionis and bought a bunch of cactus and succulents, and a flat of annual flowers. The selection here is amazing, everything looked really healthy, and prices are reasonable. Today's special was baby Venus Fly Traps for $5.99 (flies not included).

I was not satisfied with the selection so I decided to grab some fresh fruits for my blender instead. As I was checking out I noticed there was a sign that said "$10 minimum for card", unprompted, I picked up a bag of the most expensive spinach I could find in the fridge just to make the minimum. The woman behind the counter said "that won't make it okay!!" Then went to the fridge to seek a more expensive bag, only to find that was the biggest one. She came back and tossed it towards me, it rung up $9.77. She proceeded to go into a diatribe in a tone I did not appreciate exclaiming, " it would help if you carried cash on you! I get charged a fortune every time you use credit!" I said I don't like carrying cash on me and that I was sorry. Mind you this was TWENTY THREE CENTS under ten bucks and the customer in front of me just used a card (why is this even offered as a service if she is so vehemently against the use of card?). She then proceeded to chastise me further about this as my card processed. I immediately wished I was back in Brooklyn where the black owned businesses and immigrant upstarts are always grateful to their customers and use the simple square service for cards that can be utilized on any iPad or iPhone. All I wanted was some flowers and was already feeling sad about my grandfathers birthday and him not being here to celebrate. For all the locals, go to Wightman's farms as their produce is always very fresh and they seem to be very friendly towards customers. I have been in restaurants where the customer service was lousy and the product was good, but at this farm stand was not even of high quality product, I bought some blueberries that looked good but after a handful they were all rotten and looked to be from the dregs of the season. I will never again support such lousy customer service, perhaps treating a customer with an ounce of respect was too much to ask. I didn't bust my rear end to spend my hard earned dollar to a service that doesn't appreciate my business. Arrivederci crane farms !!.

I've always bought my plants from Donaldson's, so when we needed landscaping, I went to them. After…read moreleaving my number several times over a two year period, I met a nice lady there who spoke to the girl and they actually called. When getting an estimate, I clearly stated that I wanted low maintenance shrubs and that I wanted the clay removed and that I wanted room to be able to plant flowers. I was told 10" of topsoil would be sufficient. While there may be 10" in some spots, there mostly isn't. I can't plant marigolds without removing clay and putting in purchased potting soil. I bought a drill and auger for planting bulbs....the drill hand up, because it hits clay. Furthermore, the guys showed up a day early while I was digging up @50 lilies in full bloom. Dave said to just leave them and they would set them aside for me. When I got back, there were no lilies. He apologized and said they forgot and to stop but the following spring and he would replace them. When I went back in the spring, he said "I don't remember that." No integrity. I have to say, they did a nice job on the walkway. However, when I asked if we should do the front steps first, he said no... that it would be easy to remove a couple of paving stones and put them back. When we had someone out to look at the steps, they said it would be a lot more expensive to do so. After they put the rhododendrons in, I drove over to their facility and asked if they needed to be fenced for winter. I was told no. The deer decimated them. Out of 4, we had to remove 3. One (now fenced) is trying to come back. The other bushes/trees are too close together. And removing some will leave weird gaps. So far, eight bushes/plants have died. There was also to be a planting area with topsoil around the septic posts. It first he did three little circles. When I said I wanted the whole area plantable, he extended it. However, it has never been plantable because there was about an inch of topsoil over rocks.

I had little to no knowledge on gardening prior to my first visit and Denise has been so patient and so kind teaching me many many things. I love her classes - and can't wait for the one she has this coming September. We make these gorgeous seasonal centerpieces which I can plant right in my garden as well. When my lemon tree was not thriving, she nursed it back to health for me because she is the mother of all plants. There is no other place like Donaldson's and what makes it the most special is the sunflower of the nursery and that is Denise. I am so happy I found them and I look forward to going just so I can see Denise's smile.

This place is under new ownership and is a pathetic shell of what it used to be. Prime planting season and virtually no inventory in the main shopping selecting area. A fraction of the inventory is out and not in very healthy shape. The new owners are apparently a husband and wife team. The husband admits he doesn't know much about where the specific inventory is and asks his wife for help. She speaks very little English but at the end you figure out they don't have what you're looking for. Common everyday garden stuff. Nothing exotic. I loved giving local small businesses my time and money. I'd go here before going to the big box stores. Not anymore. Don't waste your time thinking this will be your one-stop gardening visit. You will likely be very disappointed. Lastly, this place used to be busy to the point of having a tough time finding a parking spot. The place was buzzing with customers every day... not just weekends. I found myself there on a Monday morning and spent 30 minutes there. I was the only one there during that time. That speaks volumes to me. I predict this will be a one season ownership before it will be sold or closed up. Let's see.
