I thought this would be my new hookah spot, but I won't be back... 2 stars for a 20% included gratuity for a party of 2. :( when I asked the waitress why a 20%, she said that if she knows someone and that person tips - she won't select the 20% tip option on checkout screen and she will not include tip amount. But if she doesn't know the person she adds the tip amount to make sure she gets tipped. This remains the best shisha cafe in the area that I've been to, and the owner, Ahmed, is a saint. He will make any complaint you have, right. That's just his ownership style and it's a breath of fresh air if you appreciate engaged and friendly management. He also has a very friendly staff that will take the time to get to know you and will remember your name and what you like to order. Do drink their mint tea, have a shisha, relax, and pretty soon this will be your favorite cafe too. When I first started going to Fairouz, it was a little smaller (pre-renovation) and mostly frequented by middle aged and older Arab men drinking coffee and playing backgammon or reading the paper. Now the clientele is younger and those authentic scenes of middle eastern men smoking as they would back home, is all but absent. I miss the old Fairouz, the one that reminded me of my time working in North Africa. read more

So somewhere in a strip mall that looks like the little middle east in Arlington is this hookah bar with a fantastic dj. Sitting in this smokey tiny cafe, watching people smoke their shisha and play backgammon, it definitely feels like you're somewhere more exotic. Being that every country I want to visit this year is having some sort of political upheaval I take what I can get. Quite honestly I would sit here all night and smoke some blue mist and listen to the dj who is fantastic. We did order a mezze plate, and I can say their falafel and anything with lamb is fantastic. The owner was very hospitable and made sure we had a good time, he also sent over some complimentary dessert which was much appreciated. More about the dj though: finally an international dj that actually pays attention to the international charts. Thank you thank you thank you for not playing Tarkan's "Simirak" over and over like it's the only arabic song on earth that came out in the last decade. Hookah is overpriced ($23 for weekend) for the skyline area. There was a strong licorice taste and barely any apple. Water bottles cost $2.50, they won't give you ice tap water. There is a 'Restaurant Service Charge' on the bill. Service was great which is why this cafe is receiving 2 stars instead of one. Total for one hookah, 2 waters, and a tea was $44 including tip. I happened upon this place while busy getting lost in Bailey's Crossroads and I believe I found a gem. I had lunch, when they have specials for just under $7. Best Lamb Schwarma I've ever had (outside of the middle east). Lamb was tender and flavorful. The sandwich is full of garlic and tahini. mmm mm. It could possibly be laced with crack b/c I've been craving more ever since. You really experience the culture here. The atmosphere is cool - dark lighting, traditional decor and great oil paintings with traditional "homeland" scenes. I really dig the paintings. Also adding to the ambiance are two big flat screen TVs showing news in some middle eastern-origin language and music videos with lots of guys with cheesy mustaches. I got great service here, too. While the food was good and the service was friendly, I've had better overall experiences at other hookah cafes. Fairouz has some unusual surcharges that I've never seen before and that simply do not make sense. And though our server did note the 1st and 2nd ones, that doesn't make them any less ridiculous. A) $5 surcharge per additional smoker. This is the most ludicrous surcharge I think I've ever witnessed from any merchant. You don't receive any extra shisha or extra hoses; you are simply charged an extra $5 per person that uses the hookah. Could you imagine ordering a bottle of wine at a restaurant and the server asking, "Will only 1 of you be drinking or all 4? Because if all 4 of you drink, we're going to charge an extra $15 for that SAME bottle of wine." Shit, at least the restaurant could make the (still bad) argument that they now have to wash more wine glasses. Here, you're charged an extra $5 for no actual service or work extended by the venue. B) $1 "open item" charge for a new hookah hose. Huh? Am I expected to bring my own hose? Why is this a separate charge from the hookah itself? This is like ordering a dessert from a restaurant and then being charged an additional fee for the fork. C) $5 "club fee" anytime of the day. This might make sense if they had live entertainment or a DJ like nightclubs charge for, but it was just a regular night with background music. You can become a "member"; otherwise, you'll incur this bullshit surcharge for no added value or service. D) $2.50 for bottled water. This is not an exclusive club in Washington DC. It's in a humble place in a strip mall in Alexandria, VA. Besides, those waters cost ~17 cents each. Why the 1500(!)% markup? What did you do to the water to merit such a markup? PS. All we wanted was tap water anyways. Yelpers, there are 4-5 other hookah bar/restaurants in this same strip mall. Smoky, cavernous, mysterious and hidden in a strip mall in Bailey's Crossroads. After reading the Yelp reviews of Fairouz, I was determined to visit this exotic "gem" in Arlington. It is a hookah bar so be warned if you cannot handle smoke, even applewood scented. I went for Sunday lunch on a bright and sunny day. The restaurant is located in a brown single story mall with narrow shop fronts strung together like dried dates. There is a wide array of vendors, from stone baked pizza, many Ethiopian markets (small with sparse shelves but much bread, and many videos), and several cafes. Although we (two women) went during the day, the interior of Fairouz had the feel of the kind of place where proper women might not set foot. I loved it! There were many tables (a padded bench along one wall, and around 40 tables closely packed together); velvety maroon walls; large paintings appear small on the cathedral high walls; chandeliers twinkling from the ceiling; and two flat screen TVs. One of the TVs shows music videos from the Middle East (Oh Haifa!) and the other screen shows classic black and white belly dancing movies. There were a few groups of men and one young urban Arlingtonian couple sitting along the wall bench, puffing on a hookah, nibbling on on goodies, socializing on a lazy Sunday. We ordered hummus with pita (it was fine but not over the moon), chicken kebab with rice (oh, my gawd, such yummy chicken! Juicy, flavorful, alone worth going for), chicken with couscous (half a chicken, roasted atop a bed of whole roasted veggies on a mountain of couscous served on a ceramic elevated platter (the couscous was a little overdone but it was okay); and to drink, we had banana smoothie (yum-oh), mint tea (yeah, real mint leaves), and turkish coffee (sweet, thick and bitter - not bad). So, the food gets four stars (but the chicken is a five). The service was okay. We never got any water even after we asked. But I give Fairouz five stars overall for the atmosphere... lots of groups of men (and some smoking hot women) sitting around enjoying hookah. I miss the Egyptian dive that used to hide up in Georgetown but this place might fulfill my desire for a smoky cafe with belly dancing, live Bolivian band (I can't wait to see the cultural blending going on there), and general anti-yuppiness. AND A WARNING! Keeping up with the anti-PCness, don't come here if you're offended by the superflurous photos of scantily clad women on the hookah menu and on the drinks menu! Or the groups of men, men and more men hanging out. And, this place is not like the website at all, so don't be mislead, mistaken or misinformed. It's much darker and dive-ier than the website. Jose and his friend Lisa apparently come here a lot, so on Saturday I drove to DC from Richmond and this is where I ended up. We ordered hot tea for the table and I had a steak and lamb sandwich. I guess it was supposed to be pita-esque because it was wrapped in a tortilla (or whatever a more authentic name would be). It was pretty good, although the large steak fries reminded me of a carnival. I've never been to a hookah bar before so I don't have anything to compare this to, but I enjoyed my first smoking experience at Fairouz. It is located in a weird strip mall that you don't see right away if you are following google map directions, but it's pretty easy to circle round and go back in. that said, the parking lot is a cluster and when we got there at 11PM one night we couldn't find parking so we left and came back at 1AM when some of the traffic had died down. Fairouz itself is rather un-atmospheric and loud, but the serivce was prompt and we wore out before our hookah did. We tried Mandarin flavored tabacco which was nice and my friend CJ showed me how to smoke and I tried to enjoy it while thinking of all those anti-smoking ads with the shriveled blackened lungs. But really, it was interesting and there were loads of people there and everyone was having a good time, and a college guy hit on me which was charming until he asked how old i was an i realized i was an old woman and should not be out after midnight anymore. read more

I have frequented Fairouz fairly often since my high school days (years ago). This place has become ridiculously overpriced over the years. They claim to have a drink special until 9PM (buy one get one free beers), but the bill somehow still comes out to be ginormous. The other day, 2 of us went to Fairouz on a Saturday night: Sevice - Fairly decent, have to hunt your server down sometimes, but the place gets pretty busy .. so understandable. Food - Mediocre at best and insanely priced. For one shisha, 4 coronas (keep in mind buy one get one free) the bill was $45 (not including tip!) Insane. They also have a yelp check-in special (free coal refill), which you get anyway with the purchase of shisha. Ambiance - They play hip hop and top 40 stuff before ~9PM, until the DJ gets in. Then the DJ plays his choice of what sounds like old school rap that no one knows until about 10 and then starts the Arabic music that a very nice belly dancing lady comes out and dances to for tips on the weekends. Other than the Arabic music, the DJ should cater the music more to the clientele's taste, than his own. Overall, probably not coming back to this specific place on a weekend. Went there yesterday after work with a Co-woker to smoke Shisha. I had never been before so I didn't really have any expectation. Turned out to be a great place. We had a little problem when I order a rum and coke, but the owner came over to the table and made everything better. He even came back to the table several times to make sure we had a great experience. I could tell he really took pride in his establishment. The food was good. We had some platter that had a little bit of everything we wanted. All in all it was a great experience and would go again. I would also recommend others to go as well! read more

An excellent shisha joint in a very nondescript location (a strip mall off George Mason Drive). The shisha is excellent, the kind that you can smoke for hours without it getting too harsh on the lungs. Prices are reasonable, too, $10 on weekdays and $12 on the weekends. The food isn't spectacular, but the hummus is good and the shawerma sandwiches are fresh and tasty. A few reviewers have said that the service here is unimpressive. That's true. Fairouz is run by Arabs, though, so you should *expect* the service to be unimpressive; that's part of the atmosphere. You wouldn't want a shisha place rushing you out the door, would you? I've been going to Fairouz for six years now, I really love this place, it's like an oriental Egyptian café, if you've ever been to Egypt, and every time I go there I really have so much fun! Owners always walk around, check their customers if they are good and if the meddling any thing, they even know most if the customers by name! If you are looking for a place to have a good Mediterranean food with Reasonable prices, it's this place! They have a so good cook! When it comes to Hookah, it's awesome, they make them so good and have all varieties that satisfies every taste if you are a Hookah expert smoker, and they do not charge for the extra charcoal! The head is also big that takes extra Hookah tobacco that will last longer! They serve alcohol and many times they offer 5$ shots! They have big screens every where around you if you like to watch games! On top of all this, their Servise is so great, and this is all because of the great, wonderful, friendly, good looking, so nice waitress they have! This is a nice hookah bar. It's easy to miss in its tiny shopping center full of other hookah bars and restaurants, but it's a real treat once you get inside. It doesn't get too smoky in here (they must have good ventilation) and the food is yummy if not outstanding. I've only ever had water here, so I can't comment on their drinks. The staff is helpful and doesn't overcharge, and the atmosphere is nice. My only reservation is that it gets really loud at night, with a club feel, and sometimes it's too loud for me. It's perfect, though, for a lazy Sunday afternoon when it's raining. read more

I like this place, A LOT! It's a good/bad thing this place is out of the way for me and my friends. If I lived close by, I'd be a hookah/shisha fiend since I would be here all the time. I've been twice and both times were excellent. My virgin foray involved a friend who had just come back from Iraq, a pal in DC who was obsessed with finding a place to smoke, and of course me, who discovered hookah in Russia of all places.... It's located in a rather old-school strip mall and we had trouble finding parking. We got there rather early on a Saturday night so it wasn't crowded yet. We ate some really awesome food, some of the best Mediterranean food I've had in the area with really reasonable prices. We were thoroughly entertained by the random Arabic music videos that were playing on two screens. Our waiter, who seemed to be in charge (so maybe a manager or owner) helped us with menu selections, and provided suggestions for tobacco flavors. Guava is my new favorite! He also hit on my friend quite a bit, but hey I'm not complaining he brought us extra coals and kept things going for the hours (like 5!) that we were there. I'm all about pimping my friends out if it gets better service/free stuff. I don't think she minded either.... One note of caution: At night it gets super crowded and service can dwindle, I'd recommend going earlier to secure a place and to avoid the crowds All in all a good experience, it loses a star for being so darn out of the way. Been here a couple of times and the place is ok. It is a good place to meet up with friends but the waitresses are all right. They are not always attentive to your table sometimes you do have to remind them about their order or let them know you have arrived (And it wasn't as full as it normally is at night). I did loove How as soon as I was coming in I believe the manager was outside greeting customers so he warmly welcomed me to come in and walked me to my table where my friends were already at. Loved that! And the Dj is super nice he played awesome music up to date and not only arabic music ( which is fine i get it its an arabic place but there are alot of non arabic customers that come ;) The dj overheard that me and my friends loved a bachata ( latin music) version of all of me and even put it on for us ! I couldn't decide between 2 and 3 stars so I gave it the third because as a hookah bar its probably better. I went to this restaurant the other day to eat, not to smoke hookah and while the smoke didn't bother me and the ambiance was nice the food was unimpressive and the service was TERRIBLE. WE had a table of 10 in the middle of the restaurant and it took us an hour to get the check! And this on a tuesday night when the place wasn't THAT busy. They also charged for bottles of water (apparently no free water available) and at $2.5 a bottle I'lll admit I felt a little cheated. I mean if you go to the middle east you pay for bottle water because the tap water isnt' safe to drink but at least its no where near that expensive! My food was OK, I've had better and nobody else at my table seemed that impressed with theirs either. I give it a 3.5 Fairouz was recommended to me from my friends new roomate while we were helping him move last night. Not being new to DC but the area we wondered what was around and as soon as the roomate heard we both liked shisha this was the first place they said we should go. We walked in and I wasn't disappointed by the decor but not overly impressed either. Typical to any other place, except there were some neat paintings on a few walls. They weren't professionaly done, just some neat paintings of some scenery in the Middle East. The shisha actually never got harsh and tasted great, the hot mint tea (a pot for only $5.50) hit the spot, and the food was tastey. I got the lamb kabob which came with a side salad and rice with some vegetables on top. Nothing mind blowing but good nontheless. The only downsides to the whole night was that they turned the soccer off the tvs and put on the football game, I don't wanna watch the NFL at a shisha bar come on!, and at the end of the night we had to go up to our waitress both to say we wanted to pay and to actually pay. On the George Mason strip mall there are at least 5 hookah bars. Out of all of them this is the best selection to go to. The Pros: Their hookahs are very smooth. They also use Star Buzz shisha, which is some of the best out there. This place does not cheap you out and will give you charcole every 30 minutes. They also don't rush you out the door, I once spent 3 hours in there. The Cons: I am a fan of ambient atmospheres, especially for hookah lounges, this is not one of them. It gets very crowded on the weekends, and its early hard to get relaxed. I hope you don't mind sitting shoulder to shoulder with the table next to you, because more than likely that is the way it will be. Overall: I would recommend Fairouz if you are in the area. It's a little small and crowded for the type of crowd that this hookah bar is looking for. I've been here twice and both times I've had an alright experience. There's nothing great about this place, but there's also nothing shabby about it. A few things that would make this place better is if their hookah hit really well. I went over last Thursday, and I have to say I'm so disappointed with the staff working there. I had such an amazing time last time, that I'm shocked. Apparently they have new waitresses, who are not good at all. The woman with a lot of make up on, who said her name was Komil or something like that was the worst. She was flirting and drinking with customers. We asked her for water and she forgot. We saw her drinking, and my girlfriend assure she was drunk. What kind of people drink in their job place? Neb is such a kind and humble guy who always speaks to all the guests, personally making sure everything is up to part! The prices here are so affordable! Hookah bars usually have ridiculous prices the ones at fairouz are fair. Now let's talk about the tibs panini.... my favorite! It's a delicious mash up of traditional Ethiopian food and an American sandwich. Their food menu is very good! The coffees are great as well and so is the shisha. I've been here several times and I love it. They have the best sheesha and cheap hookah rates. They're clean, flavors are great and the food is awesome. The environment has a lounge feeling with music playing in the background. This is one of my favorite spots. The owner is very friendly as well as the waiters and waitresses. They are very quick at exchanging coals and pack the flavors very well. I definitely recommend this place for hookah. There was a special event once where they had a bellydancer entertain everyone. Ridiculously expensive. Do not drink here; my friend's simple jack and coke's were $10 a pop. They were "showing a fight," so they charged a $5 cover charge- which we were fine with until we realized that the owner was streaming the fight from the internet instead of paying the fee to show it from ondemand, which was causing it to glitch and freeze constantly. The waitress informed us she could not refund our cover. When the check arrived, there was an 18% gratuity added for the "DJ and Belly Dancers," so we were still expected to tip the waitress, although the belly dancers were nowhere to be seen and it was past midnight. I had the distinct impression the waitress was lying to us to get a better tip. Although we finally got our covers refunded, the check was still incredibly high (about 180 for two entrees, a hummus plate, mint tea, a hookah and a few drinks.) To To top it all off, there was a skeevy customer there, at least 40 (Read: twice my age) who kept coming over and asking me back to his table. I ignored him until it was time to leave, when he walked up and grabbed me trying to keep me from leaving. Note: this place is TINY and our table was in the middle row. The DJ and several employees witnessed this. I broke away and he advanced towards me, at which point the two guys I was with stormed up and we left. Do not go here alone if you are a young woman; the place has no security and the management has no capability to bounce people. Came here and I enjoyed it very much. The customer service provided was excellent and they were very friendly, the atmosphere is very chill, good music playing and it's not too loud, you can talk and hear each other. The mix fruit hookah is excellent, the red tea is bitter but with extra sugar it's not too bad. This place used to be my GO-TO spot for hookah. I loved the atmosphere and the hookah was always delicious. For the last 2-3 years though its really gone down hill. The music is always blasting and it makes it impossible to talk or interact with friends. Seating is old and worn, tables are usually dirty, and the staff doesn't seem to care or pay attention a lot of the time. It used to be one of the only hookah bars around, so I had no choice though. You can always find underage high school kids smoking because they rarely card people (I know because I used to go here very often when I was in high school). This is a minor annoyance though. The real problem is the prices here. Paying the check is always a surprise. Sometimes the price of hookah is $15, sometimes $20, sometimes $25 or more. Most of the time the waiters who usually can't speak English literally force you and everyone at your table to buy drinks, which is really annoying since they're all overpriced (RedBull=$4.50). Also sometimes they have "live music" during which they charge a $10-20 cover charge and the music is obnoxiously loud and usually you can't understand anything anyways. Recently a lot of Hookah bars have been popping up in the NoVa area and I haven't been pressed to go to Fairouz so I haven't. The hookah as been hit or miss, sometimes good but more often bad so I see no reason to trek out to Skyline for this place anymore. BTW Don't ever eat here! read more
