What a great find. I just had the best steak I've ever had, and I have had a lot, being that I travel across North America for business and have eaten in some of the top steak houses in the country. "Where's the Beef?" It's right here at Fairway Packing located in Detroit's Eastern Market and it's an amazing find. While they supply their perfectly-aged, prime meats to some of the finest restaurants in town, they are also open to the public. I tried the pork and a steak and both were melt-in-your-mouth, "like buttah" delicious! You can order from the website and have your meat delivered or better yet, pick up your order in person to get a discount. Fairway meats would make for great corporate holiday gifts in my opinion. My wife arranged a surprise for me by getting me an A5 Japanese Wagyu steak and it's hard to explain the level of excitement surrounding this. I went and picked it up yesterday and this place is easy to get to, less than half a mile off of 75. I went in and Gino helped me make sure I wouldn't ruin this steak. Let me tell you how delightful this steak was. It has ruined all other steaks for me. Cooked it a beautiful medium rare and used the steak salt they gave me. It was nothing short of perfect. If you love yourself, you will buy your meat here. I came across this place by sheer chance about 4 years ago while sitting next to a random guy at Eastern Market stuffing my face with a burrito from the El Guapo truck. I was telling my new rando homeboy that I wanted to eat something before I went over to the Gratiot Central Market to buy some meat so I didn't overdo it. John Doe wipes some guac off his face and tells me I should go to Fairway Packing instead. I said what is that? He points and tells me it's over that way and they have dry aged beef - the rest as they say is history. Be forewarned though, this place ain't cheap. However, it's one of the few places I know of where you legitimately get what you are paying for. I've gotten tons of stuff here over the years. I'm particularly fond of the dry aged ribeyes and the chop house burger blend. Let me tell you, if you like burgers and you think there is no difference in ground beef you are mistaken, sir. And despite how much most stuff costs here, this grind is pretty reasonable - about $2.50/lb more than you will pay for janky-ass ground chuck. You can even buy yourself a hunk of meat and have it dry aged to your specifications. If you and a couple of carnivore buddies teamed up on a slab you can save yourself a little $$$ I'm also particularly fond of their packaging. Everything is vacuum sealed TIGHT. And that makes a difference, trust me. I have bought some of their specials before to save a little dough and I have gotten almost a year out of some steaks in the freezer because they are packed so well. Also, due to their popularity with the common man such as myself they have started rolling out some packages and coupon codes on their website to appeal to the retail customer. Which I really appreciate. So, Fairway, if you are reading this dudes, keep putting those specials and those coupons up, help a brotha out! This may not be a weekly grocery stop for most people but if you really want quality stuff for a dinner party or a treat while the wife might be out of town on a "girls weekend" do yourself a favor and visit their website and place an order. read more

Went down to get a piece of meat for New Years. Yes, my goal was "a piece of meat" or pieces that would feed a crowd of 9 :) I didn't know what to expect, but the reviews were great/good so I gave it a go. I have been to the other meat distributors in Eastern Market so I expected to walk into a large meat locker, not the case. You're buzzed into a small vestibule and there is a person behind a glass window who takes your order. A nice guy came out to help me choose the cut as they could tell I was a "newbie." I told him what I was interested in, my price range, and a few minutes later he came out with a beautifully trimmed prime rib roast. I went because they had dry aged beef - the cost is quite high (understandably.) I went with a "step down" from dry aged and still was presented with an absolutely gorgeous roast that was a big hit. I will certainly go down there again for special occasions. Next time, I'll just call ahead and place my order as there is really no fun/mystique in placing your order onsite. I had visions of walking through meat lockers and pointing to the one I wanted ;) Not the case, and that's ok. read more

Hooray for meat! We've talked about Fairway for a long time and one Saturday when we happened to be down at Eastern Market we stopped by. This isn't the sort of place you just stop by. It has a locked door that buzzes to let you in. And there's a small lobby with a couple chairs with a checkout window. No meat counter, no browsing the store. This is an order in advance and come pick it up kind of place. We found all this out when we stopped by. But you know what? Not for a minute did the employees seem inconvenienced by us stopping by. They welcomed us warmly, gave us a price list, and explained all of the above. And then offered to cut us a steak or two to get us started. So a 28-day wet-aged then 28-day dry-aged tomahawk chop it was. It was delicious! I filled out a quick info sheet and my account was set up for future ordering. I'm really excited to explore their Piedmontese selection. read more

I would give six stars if it were an option. I ordered two 14 oz Wagyu boneless rib-eyes on Friday at 2 pm (Memorial day weekend) for pick up the next morning. When I arrived I was met by a man who broke some bad news to me. He said that the person taking my order didn't realize that they were out of the cut I had requested. I was a bit bummed but hey no big deal. Well then the guy asks if I would be interested in some Wagyu New York Strip steaks instead. To be honest I really just wanted any Wagyu cut so that was fine with me.The guy brings me out two 16 oz. steaks that were absolutely beautiful! I think my heart skipped a beat. At this point I had conveyed no signs of dissatisfaction and made no complaint whatsoever. So what does the guy do.... He tells me they will be the same price as the rib-eyes I ordered. My jaw nearly hit the floor. This guy made my year, talk about customer service and appreciation. I will only buy prime meat from Fairway from this point forward. The 28 day dry aged Wagyu was absolutely amazing. I will say one of the best steaks I have ever had, and I have had plenty of great steak. Great meat with great service, come on! How can wagyu dry aged beef or 45 day dry aged prime beef be anything but 5 star? It can't. Melt in your mouth and butter knife tender. These are the best steaks I've ever ever had. You're going to pay a price for this but let me tell you it's worth it. We had two 22 oz bone in waygu delmonicos, grilled for 8 minutes on super high heat and they were medium rare oozing with juices. For a special treat get one of these bad boys. read more

The quality of the meat here is fantastic and you truly get what you pay for. The issue that I have is that they recently removed the 20% discount for online orders and pickup without making it explicitly clear that that was being done. My recent order didn't include the discount. While I am satisfied with my purchase more transparency into this would have been nice. Regardless the quality and consistency is best in area. At least from what I have experience so far. Imperial New York Strip was amazing although would have been better at 20% less. read more

Had my second opportunity to eat meat provided by this wonderful establishment. Received 2 American Wagyu NY Strips, 1 Prime NY Strip, a Prime Filet and Ribeye. I picked up the steaks at the Eastern Market location. The meat came individually packed and was held in a nice size box. It made transportation and refrigeration easy. The appearance of the meat was phenomenal. The marbling was consistent. Looking at the meat raw made my mouth water. The sizes were exactly what I was told they would be during my consultation with their employees. Steaks were prepared with a reverse sear. The taste is second to none. I've had the Costco Prime as well as what is supposedly prime provided by other area grocery and specialty stores. It must be the dry aging, because these steaks exceeded any I've ever prepared myself. They tasted as good as sitting down at one of the area high end steakhouses. It's also nice to be dealing with an area family. I'm able to ask questions about various options and hear first hand about how they prepare the meat for their own families. It gives me confidence when purchasing and cooking. If you're looking to up your steak game, get meat for a special occasion or just treat yourself, give them a call and prepare to be blown away. Without question the only place to buy the highest quality of meat. Wagyu & Piedmontese are well worth every dollar paid. Service is incredible, sales staff and butchers go out of their way to welcome you. I'll mention the parking lot is extremely safe, well lit and equipped w/ security cameras so when they walked my wife and her mother to the car it was extra special and they did not need to do that. My wife and I went there today to pick up some Kobe beef and we were threatened by the staff. I don't think they like black people cause they put us out they're lot and told us they were ready to handle us. And one of the guys was flashing a gun that was in his back pocket.
