Another of the Eastern Market collection of grocers; retailers specializing in fresh meats and seafood. For years we stopped at Ronnie's for beef; Randy's for sausage and Wigley's for corned beef brisket. It still has the same great atmosphere, years later. The aroma is positively addicting. I truly believe I became a butcher for a couple years as a result of coming here as a kid. No matter where we stop or who we speak to we have always been treated like family. I can't believe I never knew this place existed. If you're at Eastern Market, you have to take the trip across I-75 to visit this place. Whether you need to pick up something special for the week or just want to walk around, it's worth a visit. One of the stops sells some of the best fried chicken I've ever had. read more

One stop shop for all of your meat, poultry and seafood needs too. It was my first time in here. This is quite busy even on a mid afternoon on Saturday. It's teeming with people. Social distancing spacing on the floor but almost no spacing adhered to inside, especially by the order counter areas. There's a plethora of options here and how to pick the best cut for the best price. Probably requires a bit of time to shop around to sure you get a good deal. What a delightful experience. We went down to take a pierogi making class at Pietrzyk Pierogi (which was wonderful). Not only did we find pierogi and some Christmas gifts, but every type or kind of meat, seafood, and cheese you could imagine. There was also a shop that had home made cakes by the slice, half or whole. I understand they are open all week. It was an enjoyable experience I will do again soon. read more

Great sausages. I grew up in the Detroit area and my dad took us to the eastern market every weekend. Randy's sausages was always one of our favorite stops. The sausage tastes exactly like it did when I was a kid there. I now live in Texas and I'm very glad that Randy's has an online customer ordering for its sausages. Anyways,, if you're looking for some place to buy all sorts of fresh produce, poultry and meat items,, you've come to the right place. It's a proper farmers market where there's a collective of stores selling all sorts of whatever you needs. If you live in the city,,, or around the close surrounding cities like me,,, this is probably a great place to shop around for your cooking needs. Special order items that you might now find in your local grocery shops, I bet you'll find them here in any of the stores in the Market. Plus its just fun to look around and see what else you might need. I came here to buy some seafood,,, and there was a store for that here. I scored two big baggies of fully cooked crawfishes to serve on my Labor Day bbq get together. People are extremely friendly here. If they don't have what you're looking for, they'll direct you to another shop that would probaly have what you're needing. I definitely enjoyed shopping and window shopping here. Gratiot Central Market is my go to place to by meats of any kind :) I typically by short ribs for soups or grilling... they are lot cheaper here then at Asian markets.... the only problem I tend to buy more then I need... but oh well :) The folks working behind the counter are great, answers all your questions, helps out with smile on their face. It's busy early in the morning, so be prepared to spend some time... and if you get a chance, head over to the market to get some veggies. read more

There is no way to write a short post about Detroit and the culinary gifts it gives to the world. Mind you this is my second long post because my first one Facebook deleted My 3.672 days spent in Detroit was an experience of nonstop culinary joy and cultural learning. Saturday began right away with breakfast at Eastern Market. This puts the Des Moines farmers market to shame even though I'm proud of our market. Eastern Market is the most ethnically diverse outdoor market I think I have ever been to in the US. There are 5 main sheds that make up the majority of the market, though the outer parameters also have individual shops that are considered to be a part of the market. Beginning by shed 5, we started off our morning with beignets from Beignets, and a brisket burrito and a pork belly taco from Elguapogrill.Com. I found the pork belly to be on the bland side, but the brisket burrito had a wonderful array of flavors. Now onto Shed's 4-1. Each shed has its own unique dynamic and appeal, literally hundreds of vendors scattered all over these city blocks. We ventured through the sheds fairly quickly and across the highway to Gratiot Central Market, an indoor meat market of every possible cut of animal you could imagine. We purchased 1 pound of gizzards, deep-fried in salty/peppery batter right on the spot. Words cannot describe how fabulous these gizzards were, something I don't get to eat very often. As we tracked our way slowly through the meat market and then back through eastern market, we snacked on gizzards all the way until we reached Eastern Market Seafood Co, just off the beaten path from Shed's 1-5. Inside we found ourselves ordering an Old World Sandwich, filled with 3 kinds of sausages, shredded lettuce, sliced onions, tomatoes and yellow mustard all inside a flat pita . Everything was delicious except for the pita, which was more like thin sliced cardboard. No harm, no foul, we simply picked out the meat inside for a spicy delight. Then, onto DeVries & Company 1887 market. Three floors of unique vending experiences, everything from Ghana woven baskets to dish towels with awesome, funny little quotes such as "according to this box of mac & cheese, I am a family of 4." As in line with my World War II obsession, I purchased a World War II and Detroit influence book and another cup of coffee, but not without tasting samples of 15-year-old aged balsamic, white vinegar and cucumbers, pasta sauce that deserves restaurant level praise, and an array of crackers. I want to vomit I'm so full but I keep on powering through. At the opposite end of the market, other side of the road, is another row of vendors, restaurants and shops. We found ourselves inside Mike's Coney Island getting a gyro, and outside Bert's Entertainment Complex-Detroit at a half block wide outdoor grill getting barbecue. The gyro was made to order, the ribs were grilled right in front of us, and both were excellent! Can not possibly fit more food in but we're Buddha belly happy. As we tearfully leave Eastern Market, we get a great tour of downtown Detroit. Aaaand why not stop for another bite to eat? Pegasus Taverna in Greektown is where we landed for sakagaki (OPA!), a Cheese lit on fire and served with bread. And a chilled beer to wash down meal 87 of the day. I don't even eat red meat, but this place smelled like heaven to me. I would come back for my fish or chicken when in the area. What I really like about it, was that it appeared to be extremely clean. All of the workers there were extremely pleasant, friendly and helpful. I did get my dog some marrow bones for a really good price. My friend bought ribs and chicken and beef kebobs.. they looked really delicious and nicely priced. The more I visit Eastern Market the more I question why I ever bother going to local grocery stores. GO! Just go okay....quit hesitating :-P read more

Seriously this place has every type of meat and cut that you could ever want- if it is not seen on display ask the butcher and he/she has it; for instance, my friend was looking for cow tongue- the butcher went in the back and cut for her the exactly amount needed. I purchased 5 pounds of oxtails for only $15! 2 pounds of skirt steak for $1.25 and some Amish chicken drummies, 5 pounds for only $3!! You can also haggle. I visited the seafood section but found that the seafood at Eastern Market is cheaper (the seafood place that serves those awesome sausage sandwiches-- sorry the name slips my mind) I recommend free parking provided by Eastern Market and just walking over the bridge; otherwise, you will get gipped and pay $7 for the GCM parking lot (like we did) but overall.. This place is literally one of my favorite places on earth - I'm a big meat lover and cook from scratch several times a week, and there has only ever been one item I couldn't find here (sweetbreads - managed to get them directly from a slaughterhouse in Eastern Market instead). Basically Gratiot Central Market is a huge meat and seafood market with all kinds of offerings: beef, chicken, pork, lamb, turkey, cured meats, anything you could need. One side is completely dedicated to meat and there is a smaller seafood area on the opposite side. There are also some other smaller shops here, including a pastry/cake counter, a cheese counter (very good), a small produce area in the back, a shop in front that sells "shelf" foods like pastas, spices, sauces, etc., and a small liquor store on the meat side. All of these smaller shops are good, the only one that I do not shop at is the seafood counter because I personally prefer a different seafood shop in Eastern Market. Overall this is a great place to pick up your basic meats/cheeses/seafoods and some other odds and ends you might need for a meal. The only complaint I have is that I wish the hours were a little later (they close at 5-6pm every day) and I wish they were open on Sundays. Other than this, Gratiot Central is definitely a place to check out, if you live downtown (or even come downtown just for Eastern Market on Saturdays), this will become a regular for your meat-loving cooks! read more

Gratiot Central Market is my family's go-to place for MEAT. As huge fans of meat, we won't waste our time if we can't get a fair balance of quantity, quality, and variety at a one-stop shop. That's why every other Saturday, we trek to GCM to load up on leg of goat, shoulder of lamb, whole chickens, drumsticks, bacon, and pot roast. Did I mention we like MEAT? Our entire order usually costs around $50 and lasts for two weeks. In better weather, we combine our meat shopping with combing the outdoor Eastern Market for fresh vegetables. If you like meat, and you're sick of paying high prices for less-than-savory cuts at the big box stores, check out GCM. It's a place you can really sink your teeth into. read more

Me & my wife were at the Gratiot Central Market today 7/2/20. We waited outside for about 20 minutes we went to the first meat market inside (RJ's) off the Gratiot side. Needless to say there was no social distancing inside I brought it to the attention of one guy who was in charge behind the counter. Who said what do you want me to do? He directed me down to the security station; didn't ask people to spread out. We always spend $150 to well over $200 when we shop there. On top of that the service folks at the counter were rude. We won't go there again, sorry but with all that is going on today; we can spend our money elsewhere. We are seniors with compromised immune systems & we aren't going to take that type of chance anymore nor be disrespected because we talked about social distancing. You need order first, telling people there are no lines does not work. People just bunching up at the counter is not right. In addition, there are no protocols in place, & no communication between security & store owners. Never again!!! read more

I went to Ronnies meats at Gratiot Central market and they advertised 10 saint Louis style ribs 69.95, so I requested that but what I got is 8 regular ribs , I am not at all pleased with that and if they keep that crap up they are going to lose a loyal and faithful customer, Stop the false advertising and say what you mean. The only place I buy my meats from since 2002. I refuse to go anywhere else. They will even teach you the different cuts of meat so that you won't be duped into buying cheap, but expensively price meats. They've even went out of their way to find me because we didn't pick up all of our items. Never had a bad piece of anything from any of the merchants there. It's a cooks paradise.... read more

The fish market in Central Market use to be the place to go but, now too many times I have been there and have witnessed them playing games with people and their money and they find it hilarious while doing it. I myself bought some fish from there and looked at the scale for the price $28.17, but he wrote on the ticket $38.17 and tried to act like it was a mistake but found it very funny. I left the store, got in the car, and on the way home I noticed the fish was unusually smelly ( white bass) got home, opened the fish and OMG the fish was so smelly I knew it was no good, so I called to tell them and they did say I could bring it back, so I will see what happens today when I take it back, Nevertheless; I saw him take the fish from the ice, so I now know that when they go in the room where the door is closed , they switched the good fish and gave me the bad fish, so they not only tried to cheat me out of $10, but gave me bad fish as well. So I hope people start paying attention when they visit this place, if something seem suspicious, cancel your order!!! Just imagine how many people the cheat everyday, I can see the beginning of the end for this place and rightfully so. BE CAREFUL PEOPLE!!!! read more

A must to visit if you are in Eastern Market. Every kind of meat is available. Walking in from the main part of Eastern Market over the overpass is a counter to the right that sells fresh corn beef. The meat will be shown to you with a meat hook. Buy a lean cut. Take it home, lightly season and drop it in a slow cooker for a few hours and you are in for a treat of absolutely the best corn beef you have ever had. read more
