Marrow is a locally female owned butcher shop and restaurant. They specialize in locally owned ingredients. They are really conscious of where they get their ingredients and try to stick to local Michigan farms. A great dining experience from start to finish. We sat outside on a chilly night but don't let that deter you. They have plenty of heaters outside to keep you warm. The menu was fantastic. Everything was really delicious and flavorful. I highly recommend getting the bone marrow and you can't go wrong with any of the steaks. They are locally sourced which makes them that much better. The steak was cooked just how I want it. Also the drinks were just as delicious as well. I got an old fashioned and it was mixed perfectly. I went to Marrow yesterday, to attend one of their Seafood Boils. It was an amazing evening! First, the event took place on the patio, and the weather was absolutely perfect. Second, the food was amazing. While we were waiting for the food to be served, we got to try a little nibble of a hushpuppy with a creamy corn and crab sauce. They were only about the size of a Bing cherry, but the little fried morsal was so delicious. I could have definitely eaten more. Next, we were served the seafood. Honestly, I can't remember having seafood that tasted this fresh in Michigan. This was the first time I really enjoyed crawfish. The crab cluster was so sweet, and I was a huge fan of the clams and mussels. Marrow had seasoned butter for dipping all of the seafood in, and it was to die for! The dessert was a very surprising and delicious dirt cake, complete with gummy worms! The chocolate tasted elevated from the elementary school version, which I appreciated. What an incredible night! I made reservations in advance since it's was my husband's birthday and our first time at Marrow. We found street parking. We were near downtown Detroit so it was a breath of fresh air not to pay for parking. Once we got to the restaurant, we checked in and were greeted by the host and bar team members. They immediately acknowledged my husband's birthday too. Once we were seated, we were offered a complimentary Prosecco toast which we accepted. The server acknowledged my husband's birthday too. I love that! The experience is so important to me! For dinner, we went with the chef's taste since we were newbies. It's $90/person and it gives you a nice taste of multiple items. Our tasting included the following: 1. MI Beef Carpaccio - made with blueberry vinaigrette, cheddar, and toasted hazelnuts. Beautiful presentation and flavors. My only comment, it would have been nice with bread or crackers 2. Gazpacho Verde - cucumber, crème fraiche, herb oil, and roe. Fresh way to start off our meal. 3. Stuffies - littleneck clam, nduja, peppers, and lemon butter. This was one of my favorite snacks! 4. Fried green tomatoes - house made pimento cheese, tomato jam, and chow chow. Delicious! 5. Roasted sea scallops - made with creamed corn, marinated tomatoes, and chorizo vinaigrette. A little spicy but flavors on point 6. Michigan beef - made with charred eggplant, smoked tallow, stone fruit, and a blistered pepper. The cut of beef was hanger and cooked medium rare unless you ask for the steak to be prepared differently. 7. Warm summer cobbler - made with mixed berries, peaches, and sweet corn ice cream. Everything just explodes in your mouth! 8. Birthday treat - peach sour cream ice cream with sprinkles, a chocolate happy birthday sign, and gold candle! Truly a great experience. Went to a special seafood boil outside. Started with hush puppies with a crab dipping sauce which was a crowd pleaser. Following came Atlantic oysters. Main course (see photo) was huge with extra large shrimp, mussels, crab legs, clams and crawfish. Everything was fresh and a picnic style ensued. The sauces were hit and miss. The cocktail sauce was not the usual ketchup and horseradish, but a variation of I don't know what. The drawn butter with cajun spice was the crowd pleaser. Desert was either a hollow ween or seabed motif. The dessert consisted of chocolate mousse with ground up Oreo cookie and gummy bears simulating worms. Very attentive servers. I'd been to Marrow once for lunchtime and this time returned for dinner. There are some really good dishes like the mushroom dumplings. I also tried rabbit and the butchers pick which I can't remember exactly what it was (a steak of some sort)... both were fine. Drinks were okay too. We had the chef's tasting menu and found the dishes spotty, mostly in terms of composition. We love scallops with any kind of bacon or pancetta, but this scallop dish was overwhelmed by the other flavors, leaving the scallop behind. The corn served as part of the dish was the best thing on the plate. We had a similar response to another dish that felt equally poorly composed. We got the beverage pairing with our tasting menu which we also found oddly coordinated with the food. Normally we love a beverage pairing and always sip our drink first, then try it again after taking a bite of the accompanying dish to see how one enhanced the other. Time after time we found the pairing to be poor choice with the dish. Strange. The bartender seemed a bit overwhelmed and seated us quickly, but then didn't take our order for quite some time. The drinks were very good, though. We had a couple mocktails - the espresso and a grapefruit one. Both were absolutely delicious. The burger was amazing - one of the best smash burgers I've ever had. Ok! I know it shouldn't be an issue but we decided to go to Marrow in west village because we liked what we saw on the menu on the Marrow website. We were promptly seated and ordered cocktails but then we noticed nothing we were excited about on the website menu was actually on the menu!! I know they change their menu often and I love the food but please either change it on the website or don't put any menu on the website. Now back to my food lol the Butchers cut ( Ribeye) was amazing and perfectly cooked, it cut Like butter, the bone marrow snack was the best I ever had and the service was great as usual. This is a nice place to have dinner with family, friends, or for a date. It's a split between the butcher and restaurant. They have a nice variety of items on the menu which is great. We also appreciate that our waiter said we could get a tasting menu for one person and we could order other items on their menu to try. I think my favorite items Roasted Marrow ($16) and the Smoked Trout Rillette ($14). I would say the other items we ordered were pretty good but didn't wow me. The items I didn't quite enjoy were the Creole three bean salad and the Michigan Beef from the tasting menu. I felt that the salad's sauce was a mix that did not go well with the green beans. The Michigan beef was a bit tough for my liking. But everything else, I think would be good to try. I also noticed plenty of people ordering the burger which comes with fries as well. Had an absolutely incredible meal here last night celebrating my partner's birthday. We opted for the tasting menu, a beverage pairing, and I enjoyed a couple N/A cocktails. Also ordered the Roasted Bone Marrow -- do NOT sleep on this. The popovers are the perfect texture, the topping on the marrow is delicious, and the marrow itself is so decadent. The courses we had in the tasting menu: 1. Some sort of seafood hush puppy. Fried to perfection with an amazing crunch and soft middle. 2. Three Bean salad with a delicious miso vinaigrette dressing. 3. Best collard greens I've maybe ever had? With a duck egg on top. C'mon. 4. Shrimp with black eyed peas, rice, and relish. 5. Best steak I've ever had, hands down, no contest, shut it down, let's go home. INCREDIBLE. The fried green tomato and salad that went with it was amazing too. The fact that it was all on one plate was just...it sent me. I have to come back and have this steak again. 6. Pound Cake. Sounds simple but boy, was this good. Dense crumb on the cake but it was soaked in a drizzle, had amazing fresh vanilla whipped cream, cherries, and a berry syrup on the side. GOOD LORDT. Last year 4 of us enjoyed our first meal here. We don't normally choose a tasting menu but everyone decided to go for it. I loved it but some of the others did not. I will say on this night, we had multiple dishes with fish...Had they known what was going to be served, they wouldn't have chosen it. Had to do some work near Belle Isle and saw this as a great chance to visit Marrow. I'd read about the place in the newspapers and been wanting to try it. My wife was game too. I checked about reservations and it looked pretty wide open for a weekend night. I skipped the process and we walked in and requested a spot. Originally, they wanted to give us a location in the sun and we wisely asked to take a different spot. Their sunshades probably need a bit of an upgrade to handle the departing sun, but otherwise everything was fine. We had a great server who explained everything in detail throughout the evening. We debated the tasting menu, and even the wine pairings. I'm glad we skipped the wine, as the menu alone was enough to (over)fill. We both had the tasting menu, which I think is a requirement for the table. I had some wine and she had a cocktail which we both enjoyed. Our menu consisted of cheese croquettes, a kind of morel mushroom ceviche, vigil stew with cod and chickpeas, prawn with oxtail and squid ink pasta, beef with snail and romesco, and finally a poached pear with goat cheese ice cream. We also has some roasted marrow at the beginning. Can't go to a restaurant named Marrow without trying that. Generally, everything was quite good and well prepared. I think a few things didn't pop for me/us because they were just not flavors we enjoyed. A few niggling critiques. The marrow needed a bit of salt, the stew was too heavy on chickpeas, the squid ink pasta just wasn't our thing, the beef was beautifully cooked but also a touch too cool and could have used some more salt or seasoning. The escargot could have used some butter and garlic. The romesco sauce was also a bit too spicy. Neither of us really went for the pear dessert, though I certainly ate it all. These are small things. I think most of those are personal taste or preference. I think the not hot steak was the only real misstep. I wanted to sample some absinthe but our stomachs were very full. The total bill of just short of $300 was, we thought, a pretty good value based on what we had. I think the stew should be excluded. 5 dishes would have been ample and left us satisfied but not 'oh, I ate too much' as we left. More comments with the pics. A 4.5 rounds to 5. Marrow deserves another 5 star update review after the fantastic dinner we had last night. First, you can make a reservation on Resy but you'll need to put down $50/pp (whew, steep). Second, they still have their phenomenal tasting menu for $90/pp. It's 4 courses of 2 dishes each AND dessert. The whole table has to order it but I guarantee you'll be happy and full. The tasting menu features items that you can't order online. This time we had a more latin-inspired tasting menu - some highlights: *Corn Cake with Huitlacoche *Lamb Tamale - yo, I don't even usually like lamb but this was not gamey at all. Also the peach salsa on this was perfect! *Hanger Steak - oh just perfectly cooked and seasoned and it was served with a potato pave that had a bit of spice to it. *Spanish Octopus - with aji amarillo and mustard and macadamia nuts. Just sooo perfectly tender. I also appreciate that Marrow has some similar dishes like the bone marrow dish, but they're making it completely differently based on local ingredients, seasons, etc. But, that's also a double-edged sword. My friend ordered the mussels again expecting to it to be like like the asian-inspired flavors she had last time but this time it was chorizo and more latin-influenced. It was still really good but she was just a bit disappointed! Anyways, stop in for a great great dinner and trust them with the tasting menu! There's a small lot to the right with a few reserved spots for Marrow as well as street parking. We opted against the chef tasting menu because the few items that the bartender rattled off didn't excite me. Ordered: Liver mousse - good but too much duck fat on top. Had 4 half pieces of buttered toast with the liver. It's just too much grease on top of grease. I asked for more bread without butter. She said she'll get that out. It came out and we were charged $4 for 2 pieces of bread. It would've been fine had she told us instead of seeing it on the bill. Gnocchi - meh Duck - tender and had a nice crispy skin on it. The apple complemented it well. Michigan Beef - inconsistent and overcooked. We were never asked what temperature we wanted. Showed up medium well to well. Potatoes on the bottom also inconsistent, cold and some pieces were soggy and some crispy. Chocolate Blood Cake - underwhelming. Bone Marrow Custard - sounded intriguing but I wouldn't order again. When I think of custard, it's creamy and more like a custard. This was more gelatinous and maybe it's supposed to be this way. Just not what I expected. I was in Detroit for a weekend visit and wanted to check out one of its best restaurants. I looked at restaurants that had been recognized by the James Beard Foundation and selected Marrow. I'm so glad I did. Chef Sarah Welch's restaurant has received multiple James Beard recognitions. I'm certain she will be a winner in the Best Chef Great Lakes category. When I arrived, I hadn't decided if I wanted to order off the menu or go with the tasting menu. My server, Airie, helped me go with the tasting menu, plus one offering off the menu - the Roasted Marrow. Enjoying my cocktail, I loved the energized dining room. The restaurant's management staff was present and supported its servers and guests. As I would expect, the signature Marrow was spectacular. Probably the best serving I've ever had. The tasting menu consists of 10 items, including many of the restaurant's most celebrated dishes over its first five years. Standouts included the Beef Navel Yaki, Glutinous Rice Dumplings, Kimchi Caesar Salad, Mapo Tofu, Michigan Beef and two deserts: Chocolate Tart and the Baklava Donut. I tried the Beef Tongue, but just couldn't mentally get excited about this serving. With all of these servings, Marrow does a great job with pacing, with a variety of servers presenting your next dish. I often find a tasting menu doesn't deliver enough food for my appetite. Marrow delivers a feast for only $90. As someone staying downtown, it was great to head to a cool neighborhood about four miles away with lots of redevelopment happening. read more

First time at Marrow and I absolutely loved it - definitely some of the best food that I've ever had! One half of their space is a showroom/check-in/butcher's counter where you can order some incredible cuts of meat and they're wrap it up and hold it for you in their fridges until you're done with your dinner as well, which was so convenient! I really wanted to do the Chef's Tasting, but my friend that I went with has a few dietary restrictions and unfortunately at Marrow, to do the Chef's Tasting everyone at the table has to do it together and there are little to no substitutions allowed to accommodate my friend's dietary restrictions on the tasting menu, so we couldn't do that. Can't wait to get back to Marrow again sometime soon and try out the Chef's Tasting! But our waiter was super accommodating in other ways and got my friend a personalized menu marked up with all the dishes she could eat on the a la carte menu and what substitutions they could make on that to certain dishes to tailor it to her restrictions and that was much appreciated! Our waiter was also so sweet and asked if we were celebrating anything and we said we were celebrating our FRIENDSHIP! She said in light of that, she wanted to provide us with some complimentary bubbles to aid in the celebration, which was very heart warming! I also told her that I don't drink alcohol and she was completely unfazed and got me non-alcoholic bubbles! This was just such a nice touch on top of a wonderful meal! The last meat dish was a bit heavy and the flavor was a bit much but overall, very good. Other people might like their food more flavorful, but for me it was too heavy.
