This Doctor Is a hidden GEM in Santa Cruz County! I've been to over 25 Drs over my 4 years time due to a difficult injury I had. Just like many other patient sufferers, I was told, "I'll Never get better"..and have to live with 4 burst discs plus left leg sciatica (Radiculopathy) of my leg and facet joint syndrome etc. for the rest of my life. The computerized equipment he uses to measure muscular resistance and pinpoint areas of constriction with precise adjustments. I have been seeing Dr Falkenroth for almost 6 years, and I only have great things to say about him, and his office staff (Fran!). I love that they are willing to squeeze you in on short notice, but the main thing I love about this DC (aside from his very dry sense of humor and quick wit), is this: I have seen chiros over the years, where it seems as if the treatment will never end. Twice a week, for eternity. This is not the case with Dr F. I am a chef, and I only come in when I'm in crisis, ie, my back or neck is sore. I am usually completely tuned up (aka healed) within 2-3 visits. He finds the problem, and treats the problem. I seriously buy three visits at a time, and almost always only use 2 before I am feeling better. I find him to be honest, to have integrity, and to truly be a master at his craft. I suffered from back injury with resulting L4, L5 bulging disk, sciatica and stenosis. When I moved to Santa Cruz, I continued Chiropractic treatment with Dr Falkenroth ( I has had good results with Dr English in Santa Barbara) and I continued to have good, beneficial results. I also relied upon ice packs and Aleeve to relieve pain, and an excellent, especially helpful book "8 Steps to a Pain-Free Back" by Esther Gokhale. I finally sold my "inverse table" and completely avoided the recommended back surgery. I don't use one on a regular basis but when I need one I call Dr. Falkenroth's office and he is always willing to get me in, usually within a matter of an hour of me calling. Just the same if I have an appointment and can't make it or don't need to I call and cancel with no fee even if it's the same day. I have been going to Dr F for now about 3 years. He has a simple method that works on me. He has computerized equipment and a table that moves to help adjust your back and a chair that he can use to do physical adjustments if you want. In the waiting room there is 2 chairs that message your body, if you want to use them and after each treatment you can have a aqua message if you want! OMG I love this place! Not only are they SO supportive of a working mother's schedule, they are so friendly and it works! I had horrible sciatica for months. I was so miserable trying to make appointments after work and working around the schedule of picking up my kids from daycare and preschool. Total nightmare but this place gave me a little bit of love for an hour and they are so easy to schedule with. They will even take a walk in appointment. I've got to admit that I've always been somewhat skeptical of alternative methods to control pain, in my case, hip pain and neck pain. I had pain in my neck and shoulder and tingling down my arm and had a difficult time walking up the flight of stairs to the office. Dr. John examined me and set up a treatment plan for my specific problems. By the end of my treatment plan, the pain in my neck has completely disappeared and although I still have pain in my hip I can now climb those stairs easily. The staff is very friendly and professional and anytime I need an appointment, Dr. John will accommodate me. I can't let this review go without mentioning the waiting room. Ok...so I have had sciatica for about 7 years. The pain is not crazy bad, however I must sit down for a few minutes to 'reset' it for a while. I am not crazy about surgury, and I have had several chiripractors try to 'fix' me without success. I saw an add in the Sentinel for spinal decompression treatments. I decided to check out Dr. Falkenroth and made an appointment for my free consultation. I saw the doctor on February 24th (2015). We talked about my lower back issues, and he poked around a bit, asking if certain spots hurt and also twisting me a bit ans he had me lie down and poked around a bit more. I also wanted to see his equipment, which looked very new, modern and state of the art. I made a couple of appointments for treatment for the following week, and went home. I arrived home and my back was very sore when I got out of my car. I could not stand up straight for several minutes, and it hurt inside and also to the touch. I was kind of aggravated, as I felt so much worse after visting the doctor. The pain gradually subsided, however my lower back felt quite different than usual. The next day, my back was still sore, however I noticed that my sciatica was gone! Today is March the 5th, 2015 and the sciatica is still gone! I visited the doctor early this week and thanked him and insisted that I pay for my free consultation...I am so happy to be rid of my issues and totally recommend Dr. Falkenroth to anyone! read more

I went to see Dr. Falkenroth to discuss spinal decompression on his DRX9000. I have a badly herniated (extruded 2cm) L5S1 disc. I appreciated the free consultation, and he was attentive and I liked the feel of the office. However, after I told him that I had been suffering sciatica and severe lower back pain for months and was using pain medication regularly, he proceeded to push down with both hands directly over my injured disc area. I screamed out in pain. This was apparently part of his evaluation, and he said it told him that the nerve was "quite inflamed." I received no treatment that day. I felt the painful effects of this traumatic "inspection" for many days after, and decided not to proceed with Dr. Falkenroth. To be fair, I was still unsure of whether I wanted spinal decompression therapy at all (my doctor had advised against it). I recently (1 month later) saw a highly regarded chiropractor in the Los Angeles area, and he assured me that his evaluation and hands-on treatment would involve nothing that irritated my inflamed nerves or the surrounding areas. This chiropractor also used a cheaper, simpler machine for decompression that he said did a better job (money invested in the computer chip and design, not a marketing campaign). I am not here to disparage the use of the DRX 9000 (though I urge people to read up on that machine and some of the marketing strategies associated with it). I am simply here to note that I walked out of Dr. Falkenroth's office in a lot more pain than when I entered. I had to write, because the last year of my life has been spent desperately trying to subdue the pain caused by my injury, so this is not the same as being sore after an intense massage or chiropractic session. I felt mishandled, and I don't know why he couldn't simply believe me when I said I was in lots of pain that necessitated pain medication. It felt unprofessional, or perhaps simply something done out of a lack of experience. read more
