We are on a family vacation in California from Chattanooga, Tn. We were traveling from San Fran to Monterey. I had pulled my back and needed relief. I called at noon and they were able to get me in within a couple hours. Very impressed with everything. Not a long wait and Friendly staff. Dr Ron did a great job explaining everything to me. I was somewhat skeptical about chiropractic care when I herniated three discs in my back. But I seriously wanted to ask Ron what kind of black magic he had used after my first time on the table. The first consultation was extremely impressive. They did a couple x-rays on site, as well as some soft tissue heat scans to see what muscles are compensating for improper alignment. He looked at my neck x-ray and turned to me saying, "Let me guess. You were in a minor car accident about four...maybe five years ago, and walked away without seeing a doctor?" "I mean...that wasn't recent, but...yes, now that I think about it, that's true. About five years ago." I had apparently gotten whiplash and it snaked down my spine kind of how kids might play, Crack the whip. Except the whip was my lower back and tailbone. I was in there five days a week for a while. And then three days. And then once a week. And then once every month or two. It was amazing to see how useless my physical therapy was until it was complimented by chiropractic care. They're incredibly affordable. Doubly so if you're a student. And triply so if you're insured. My Mom managed to sprain two ankles and when they didn't get better over time, she figured she'd go in and see if they could help her. They have a referral policy where they give out 2 Regal movie coupons for any referral. When she went up to the desk, they just gave her the tickets without her asking for them and told her to pass them along to me the next time she saw me. Once I completed 99% of my schooling, I was only enrolled in a two credit course for an internship in order to graduate. They totally gave me the student discount on my massage anyways, even though I think it's only intended for full-time students. It's also incredibly easy to walk-in. Anytime a friend is injured, I immediately refer them to Ron (I've seen Rhodes on a number of occasions too, both are great). They have such fantastic customer service and offer truly fantastic care. I walked in last week after 3 days in the hospital with intractable backpain, barely able to stand. While Dr Ron was great, I have to give a special thank you to Dr Dave who really spent 4 days diagnosing and treating the underlying muscular problems that were causing my back pain. I hobbled in Wednesday, and walked out almost pain free on Saturday. I've worked with massage therapists, physical therapists and chiropractors who look at things through the same lens everyday no matter what problem walks in. Dave worked through history and put together pieces from throughout my life that all added up to what was causing my pain, not only adapting my treatment, but adjusting each day as I progressed. Went in one day after my low back went out completely. I couldn't stand up straight without feeling like something was seriously wrong with my spine. I couldn't lie down without getting up very very painfully and I could barely move. I went in and Dr. Rhodes did the intake and took care of me on the first visit. After that I worked with Dr. Schmidt. They're both awesome, I just like the way Dr. Schmidt explained things, fit my brain better. Anyway, so I went in twice a week for about a month and a they got me back to running, swimming, biking, etc. I'm trying to finish my first half-iron and both docs were great about gauging when I could up my training. Also, Dr. Rhodes is a major runner and so understands all of this. Anyway, they're great. My back isn't totally back to where it was because my insurance doesn't cover and I was the bill was just too much. I stopped when i had about a third of the way to go in terms of more adjustments back to normal but I've been doing great. Changed out my running shoes which helped TREMENDOUSLY and am doing all the stretching and excercises they suggested and it feels great. PS: they also have a great massage table that loosens the back for a better adjustment. The team is awesome, it's like Cheers in there. The massage guy Tyce is the best. It's an open setting so you don't get your own room for adjustment and all that so it can feel a bit like a factory at times but the trade off is that they can see more patients at once. This is a plus if you have an emergency or just want to change your time, they can always find a time to work you in with mininmal waiting which I prefer over waiting for my own private room. Only downside is when you're trying to get off the massage table and your back is in severe pain and everyone in the waiting room is watching as you awkwardly slide off and are helped up lol. I heard about Action Chiropractic from a friend who had TMJ but had it adjusted and fixed by Ron, so I had to go and see for myself. It turns out, my entire back is sort of bad. but Ron did an excellent job in explaining how everything correlates and how its all relevant to my TMJ. they are very knowledgeable. I drove an hour and a half to see this guy and I swear if he weren't so far, I'd be in his office weekly. He was super friendly, and very funny. you'll have a great experience here, go figure. Ron and his staff are the best! I've been going to him for about 7-8 years now after being previously a total skeptic of chiropractors and alternative medicine, but he quickly changed that. Not only does he have incredible insight into the body and an accomplished healer, but he's also professional, one of the nicest and most genuine guys I know, and goes way above and beyond the call of duty. They were advertising their practice on campus at the beginning of the year and I thought, "I've got scoliosis, maybe they can help with the pain...Why not?" They have helped. A lot. I have to admit, if I didn't have the UCSC student insurance plan, I probably wouldn't be going to them. If you have the university's health plan, they have incredibly student friendly rates. Since I started going at the beginning of the quarter, I have experienced way less pain than I am used to having in my every day life. My parents said that I looked about an inch taller when I went back home for Thanksgiving, but that could just be that they were excited to see me. (I feel about an inch taller, so maybe I am straightening out.) Before seeing Doctors Rhodes and Schmidt, I had constant daily pain in my mid back, right shoulder, and neck. Now I still experience pain on a daily basis, but it is FAR less severe, and actually dissipates by mid morning. I would call that a success. read more

PATIENT BEWARE! You are at serious risk if you choose to see Dr. Schmidt of Action Chiropractic. It has been six months since he "treated" me and I am still suffering from an injury that he incurred. I went to see him for a low back problem. The first time he adjusted me, he "cracked" my neck and I immediately bolted upright in intense pain. My neck had gone into spasm from the shock of the adjustment. He managed to calm it down and assured me it would be fine. Giving him the benefit of the doubt, I stupidly went back for another treatment and he did exactly the same thing! I was--and am--incredulous. Six months later, my low back pain is long gone (no thanks to him) but my neck has never recovered. I have received numerous treatments from another chiropractor, an acupuncturist, a massage therapist and a physical therapist, including cold laser therapy and electrical stimulation. I get temporary relief but the pain always returns. I have been getting chiropractic care on and off for the past 25 years and have a general trust for the profession. I never expected that I would actually be injured by someone from whom I sought healing. I sent him an email letting him know what he had done and he wrote back saying that I should have kept coming back to get past the "pain stage" of treatment. (Yeah right!) That all said, he's a really nice guy and seemed sincere--but I wouldn't trust him with my health. read more
