It's a block down south from the courthouse at Mitchel Lot which is around the Victory parking lot area. If you walk to the VTA/transit building corner, you've gone too far south. Convenient walking distance. Security check-in is pretty smooth. I just dislike the extreme cold temperature inside and long wait times. Employees always look overworked or uptight. I get thirsty quickly. Gov needs to do something about public services, especially long lines. Street parking is always limited and no spaces are available. Overall, the building is beautiful on outside and walkable to many restaurants and coffee/donut shops nearby. For jury duty, it's safe and ok to walk around a bit. Not bad nor good, but the walk is pleasant and the park across the street has been there for years. There's a lot more homeless folks now.

A brief 2-block walk and I'm there. Note that there are 3 court houses within the block, and a superior court was the one in the middle. Getting through the metal detector was also a breeze, but the confusion started at the Jury Assembly room. No one at the door told us what to do, since it's a room full of chairs and people sitting around. Naturally I thought that we're supposed to sit down and wait for instructions! Nope, we're supposed to go make a line. The people who were sitting down were the ones that were called back for the 2nd day. So I went to the line, to be told that if it's my first day AND if I had parked in the Jury Duty lot, I can skip the line and go scan my jury duty notice at the check-in kiosk. Unfortunately, after I did that, they told me to go back to my line to get my parking validation!!! What? I told them that I'm not going back to the end of the line, that's not right. So they said that I can go back to my "original" spot of the line! Unbelievable how ridiculous this was, but once I got through this, it was decent. The waiting rooms are huge and the seating is comfortable. They also have free cups and water coolers for cold or hot water. There is also a Court Cafe and restrooms nearby so that helped. Luckily, I was dismissed by 10 and it was over.

Unless you need assistance in filling out legal forms, check the website first! Doors open at 8. Doors for the legal assistance opens at 8:30. Yeah, I don't know why there is a 30 minute gap. Parking is either: street (meter) w/ a maximum of 2 hours or you can park in the parking lot directly across and pay $6.. exact change only, BTW. They took out the machine.. guess the city of San Jose couldn't afford to continue to maintain the equipment. If you do decide to park in the lot, grab a white envelope where the front/drop-off is and fill it out.. the date, the time, your car make and model, and license plate.. seal the envelope w/ the fee and drop it in the slot AFTER you leave however, there is a person standing guard there so I just went ahead and paid for it through her instead of the useless process that is implemented. I didn't have exact change so I was thrilled she had change. A ticket is then given after the transaction and it needs to showcase inside your car on the dashboard. The usual every time you enter a government/federal building.. your purse and/or belt goes through the conveyor x-ray machine while you drop your loose items in a bin, and walk through the human sensor.. If you just need the forms and do not have access to a computer or a printer then after you go through the security line then proceed towards the end of the other side of the building.. forms will be on your right hand side. From divorce, child support, restraining order, civil court suits, custody battle.. all the legal headaches possible. Thank goodness I didn't need to talk to anyone. I grabbed the forms I needed and think I needed and headed out. I stood in line for over an hour and paid $6 for nothing, basically all because I haven't been on the computer. I did use their free assistance in the past and they are helpful to an extent. Like w/ most services (free or not), you will get genuine ones and asshole ones.. take a chance.. it's free.. what can anyone possibly ask for? If you do need to talk to someone, make sure to bring all the legal documents you have, even if you have some that aren't really related directly because they can't help you unless they have a big picture of what is going on and what you are trying to accomplish.

This building looks brand new and very clean. The person working at the greeting station was very helpful with what we needed to do, and checked in on us filling out the paperwork online. They presented aggression due to a miscommunication of protocol upon building entry. If there needs to be only x2 guests per screening, place proper signage at the entrance. Upon arriving I entered the building to be told to wait outside. As instructed I waited outside patiently. Before they finished screening, not even provoking this treatment- they opened the door again aggresively to tell me, and I quote "you need to WAIT. DO NOT rush our JOBS". They closed the door on me.. as I continued to wait. lol cmon now So now I am asked to enter, and these are the questions asked: "What brings you to this building today?" I say, "I have an appointment" They ask "do you have an ID?" I say, "yes" While unloading all my items into the basket I wait for further instructions to pass the metal detector. They again rudely ask for my ID. I inquired if there is any signage at the door preparing the people for this screening, I get told "YES WE DO- do you want to go outside and read again?!" Niiiiice dude If your ID needs to be presented at security check in, provide proper signage. They claim the signage at the door requests these items, but they only mention items that cannot be brought into the building. This can prevent frustration and mistreatment of both staff and patrons. I recommend better training & attentiveness to your staff. I'm going to do my best to report this to the BBB and anywhere else I can blast it. Don't make it my business that you hate your job. It's rare that these days security makes you feel secure- this was the opposite. This made me feel way more in danger than safe. I hope these A-holes find peace and a better attitude.
