It was a beautiful Monday evening, and my GF said lets go for a drive...well that was just great only we hadn't the foggiest where we were going, she decides she wants to find this place that everyone RAVES about. So off we headed with vague (very vague) directions, in the lovely sunny autumn air. Eventually we found it and hey! It looks like a block of toilets from the road, even the large banner hanging off the side of it saying 'THE FAMOUS GROUSE' didn't actually alert me to the fact we had found it, I still thought it was an advertisement (hanging on a block of toilets) In we went and there were only a few diners in the place, Monday evening is not the time to come if you want atmosphere, but if you are conducting an illicit affair and don't want to be seen then this could well be your place. 2 menus, bar snacks and the fancy leather bound menu that usually means your main will cost over £25, we opted for the bar snack menu, I had the cod and champ....well!!! A massive serving platter appeared with what looked like the whole carcass of Moby Dick on it, the cod was humongous, any burly builder would have been delighted with this offering. My GF had Goujons and they appeared minuscule in comparison, the champ was OK, a bit under seasoned to tell the truth, and the mushy peas were a tad dry, but all in all it wasn't a bad experience. There is a bar/lounge area where you can sit and eat if you not all that into fine dining, or a posh restaurant towards the back. We decided to try it again and soon. Service was quick and efficient, but my ginger ale was a bit flat and therefore disappointing. read more

Quite a number people have recommended this restaurant to me so being the sort of fella who likes his food thought id give it a try .The decor would be fair to say is a bit dated the staff were friendly there was a good choice of different dishes (maybe to many as got special lists as well ) The food came to table very quick which would lead me to believe that most of the dishes was quite well prepared, ordered Steak cooked medium/well which would prob take 25 Min's came alot less, edges of steak was cold so were plates even thought it came quick I could see it placed on hatch for server to collect for a good several minutes. Deserts were like something you would buy from freezer dept in local supermarket's they had a manufactured taste off them definitely not home made menu on deserts looked good but food let it down wouldn't go back read more

I chose the Famous Grouse for a get together with some friends who had been away, after seeing an ad in a local paper. But I was in for a night of verbal abuse and belittlement from the lady of who served us, we were treated with nothing but contempt from the start of the night. I have never gone to a restaurant and been treated so rudely and abruptly. Upon querying another waitress if we could have the manager in order to complain, we found that the lady serving us was in actual fact, the manager. This lady then chose to confront us in a defensive manner when we were paying the bill, and took our complaint and turned it into an argument in front of the restaurant. Upon complaining to the owner of the restaurant via letter about a week later, we found the the manager had lied to her about our actions in order to cover herself. I have never been so appalled by one establishment. I would urge you to stay away. read more

Food is Amazing!!! I was taken by friends who raved about the place and after our visit I can see why. I believe it is one of the best eating houses in the country. Portions are massive which suits me just fine. Ordered the aberdeen angus fillets which where perfectly cooked (slightly pink in the middle as ordered) The wife had the lasgane with cheesey bacon champ, which she highly rated. Also the steak is not pre cooked weight so a 12oz steak is probobly a 14oz anywhere else. Great atmoshphere with friendly staff and a large homely open fire. Would recommend to anyone read more
