Breakfast Sandwich with sourdough, sausage, over medium eggs and potatoes
    Virginia T.

Such a great breakfast spot! We met up with family here before heading out on our road trip to NC. The service was friendly and spot-on quick, attentive, and everything came out just right. A big thank you to the staff for giving us the space and time to catch up with loved ones I hadn't seen in over two years. It meant a lot to start our day with good food and even better company!

From the very first time I was Googling "best places to have breakfast near me" and I ended up with the Famous Toastery as one of my results, I was wanting to go try it out. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Even before visiting the restaurant, I was attracted by the beautiful new construction building structure, both inside the outside ans in the inside. By their clean, we'll organized, and neatly arranged interior design and seating area[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. And last but not least by their extensive menu with quality items for breakfast and for lunch. The 3 items I read about that interest me most were: 1. The Huevos Rancheros, 2. The Peach Crepes, and 3. The Maine Lobsters. The last two only offered on weekends. So one day I decided to go visit this restaurant and see for myself if all that I had read and seen of this restaurant from their website and reviews were actually true. I arrived in Keagy Village, the outdoor mall area where the restaurant is located, on a beautiful Wednesday, early Autumn morning, during the time when the leaves were starting to change colors. [[HIGHLIGHT]]From the beautifully designed entrance sign of this outdoor mall to the architectural solid design of the building structure where the restaurant was located, to the beautiful interior design with the use of the color yellow in several tones, and nicely placement of lights to create a very pleasant lighting treatment, this restaurant stood out as a one of a kind, lovely place to have an amazing breakfast or lunch.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] As soon as I entered the place, the host welcomed me with a smile and warm greeting and took me to one of the medium size tables centrally located in the restaurant. I very much appreciated this greatly because there is nothing worth than being seated at a small table when the restaurant is hardly full. She also handed me the menus which I quickly began browsing and enjoying. Soon after I sat down, a friendly server with a great personality came by to see what I wanted to drink and answer any questions that I had about the menu. I ordered a cup of coffee, and when she told me their orange juice was freshly squeezed, I ordered a glass of orange juice as well. For breakfast I ordered their Huevos Rancheros: Two eggs over medium, with fresh avocado, pico de gallo, and cilantro served over a bed of smashed black beans, cheddar, feta, and crispy tortilla strips. I also asked her to add two portions of chorizo extra. When the food arrived it looked like a culinary masterpiece and tasted amazingly delicious. I enjoyed every bit of it and my server came by at the appropriate times to see how I was doing and refill my coffee. After having this exquisite breakfast I wanted to end with something sweet so I asked if they had the Peach Crepes, but she told me they were only made on the weekends. So instead I had a Cinnamon Roll: Puff pastry swirled with a rich mixture of cinnamon and brown sugar, topped with cream cheese glaze. Needless to say, it was simply different than any other that I had ever had, and simply delicious! I highly recommend this restaurant as a one of a kind place to enjoy unique breakfast and lunch items, in a relaxed environment with extraordinary customer service.

The food was delicious. They have gluten free options which is so refreshing and they actually taste good! The service is quite nice. I would highly recommend checking this place out! Just keep in mind that they do have gluten options and that cross contamination is always a risk when eating out.

I have been here several times and it never disappoints. Great breakfast and great cocktails.

Decided to try this place for New Year's Day breakfast although it was a drive for us, there aren't a ton of breakfast places on the outskirts of Roanoke and I didn't feel like driving downtown. This resturant is located in a strip mall type layout so parking is limiting but we had no issues. There is a bar area and the layout was open. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Tall ceilings, modern decor, clean and fresh atmosphere with upbeat happy music playing.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We were told we'd have to wait 10 minutes even though there were multiple tables open but it was less than 10 minutes before we were called so no big deal. There are a few wooden benches to sit on while waiting. Our server promptly greeted us, brought drinks and took our orders and then disappeared for most of the rest of the time. We didn't need anything dire but it would have been nice to have the dirty dishes cleared to deter my small children from playing with them. We ordered the kids flap jacks, fruit, egg and bacon which was all very tasty and visually appealing. I ordered the protein power bowl which was not only beautiful when it came out but very tasty. I was apprehensive about the balsamic glaze painted on my eggs but it sort of worked. Coffee was okay, probably not the freshest pot and had a slight char taste. The service was the least appealing part of the experience which is the only reason I didn't give 5 stars. The quality of the food for the price was outstanding. Only $33 for a family of 3 with drinks isn't bad for breakfast. All in all a win. Famous Toastery is worth your time, try it out.

One of the best brunch spots in Roanoke! We came here on a busy Sunday morning, but didn't have to wait since we got on the waitlist online. We were seated pretty quickly. I tried the Huevos Rancheros. Our table also got the fresh juices ( I tried the orange). Both were delicious and very filling. Parking is pretty easy since they have a large lot that wraps around the back. The one minor downside I noticed was that the service was a bit inconsistent. We had multiple different servers and had to ask for things like water and silver ware multiple times. Not a big deal overall but wanted to point it out.

Famous Hash with diced corned beef and potatoes, two eggs over easy, gluten free Hollandaise sauce, and gluten free multi grain toast.

Updated on March 3, 2024, because we managed to eat in, and I remembered to take pictures this time. My son and I drove through Roanoke and stopped to dine in. We arrived at 1:00 p.m. and were told there would be a 20-minute wait. We were seated almost 30 minutes later, and I asked the host Jordan if the Hollandaise sauce is gluten free. I have a medical issue and must avoid gluten. She asked and let me know that it is gluten free. We were promptly greeted by our server Thad. We ordered water, and on a whim I ordered the freshly squeezed orange juice. They have a counter top automated juicer. My son ordered the French Toast and Bacon, and I ordered their Famous Hash. The hash is diced corned beef and potatoes with two eggs any style on top with Hollandaise sauce and toast. While we briefly waited for breakfast, I noticed that my glass of OJ separated (picture attached). I used my straw from my water to stir it, and it was fine after that. Breakfast was delivered quickly, and we immediately started eating. In addition to the meals being served, the runner delivered our check. My son enjoyed the French toast and bacon and finished quickly. I really enjoyed the hash as it was hot and flavorful. The Hollandaise was okay, and the toast was good. Although there were plenty of jelly and jam options on the table, I would have liked to have some butter for my toast. Perhaps if there had been time when turning over the table for the next customers, they could have refilled the little dish with pats of butter. I really enjoyed the food, and we left about 2:00 p.m. Service was quick and efficient. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ On February 25, 2024, my son and I stopped by for a takeout order. We would have eaten in, but we were in a hurry and the place was packed. My son ordered French toast with a side of bacon, and I ordered the Reuben on GF multi grain bread. The hostess Jordan took my order and understood the precautions that needed to be taken for my gluten intolerance. She ensured that the kitchen was verbally notified in addition to noting it in the order. The Reuben was delicious, and safe for me to eat. My son's French toast was cooked to perfection and consisted of 6 triangles lightly dusted with powdered sugar and syrup on the side. He would have preferred more powdered sugar but otherwise enjoyed it. The three strips of bacon were thick and flavorful. When we have more time, we would love to sit down to enjoy the service and atmosphere.

Crab omelette with sour dough toast and potatoes
    Jill B.

We visited this place with family. We had 9 people and only had to wait a little while for them to push some tables together and then we were sat. My kids loved the waffles with whipped cream and berries. (Sorry I forgot to take a before picture of the waffle).) I got a special: crab omelette with sour dough toast and the potatoes. The omelette was delicious and the toast with butter was good. I asked for the potatoes to be well done because I like the sides to be crispy but they were soft and the same as someone else's order so they didn't do anything special. My husband liked his food and added chorizo to it. Overall we would go again. I would order fruit or something else for my side though. I tried two potatoes and didn't eat the rest so they got wasted unfortunately and I am not a fan of wasting food. :(

    "Famous" corned beaf hash
    Kamuela O.

So not sure why their hash is famous... the eggs were not cooked right, there was very little beef in the hash itself and it wasn't fully cooked. The other dishes, the blue crab egg scramble, was very bland. Eggs were watery not much crab and let much to be desired. It seemed like there was more onions than anything else. Rarely leave negative reviews but this one might be a skip if you can. The saving grace was the service was good and my tea stayed full.

    French toast with bacon

We got there on around 1pm on a Sunday. 30 minute wait, but they text you so you can wait in your car. The service was nice and the food was really excellent. The breakfast bowl doesn't look like much, but the potatoes are well cooked and seasoned well, the eggs were cheesy and the gravy flavorful. I added some hot sauce and ate nearly every bite. Definitely will be returning, one of my new fav restaurants!

My dining experience was incredible thanks to Tim, who made the Pineapple Upside Down Cake drink!

And diners have become synonymous with "a place for everyone," connected to the nostalgic idea of America. Put the two together and you have The Pancake House in Salem, Virginia. After having been selected as number 4 of Yelp's Top 50 most prolific Elites of 2025, a year when I also was awarded the Yelp Triad Squad Photographer of the Year Award at their Yelpies 2025 Award Ceremony, an event that honored the highest-performing Yelp Elites, and where last year I was awarded the Yelp Triad Squad Yelper of the Year Award, I decided that this year, as an All-Star Yelp Elite, I not only wanted to be the first to discover new restaurants and businesses, and bring them to the attention of the public, but also to uncover those found in hidden paths that for one reason or another have not reached the public in its totality. And "The Pancake House" in Salem, Virginia, is a perfect example. This restaurant that opened its doors in the mid 1950's, not only has survived through the years, but has kept the ionic American breakfast tradition alive and well, as I discovered today when after having driven by it many times in my pearl white Lexus, I decided to stop by for an early breakfast, and give it a try. Located on Apperson Drive next to the Lee-Hi Lanes Bowling Center, in Salem, Virginia, The Pancake House is a long-standing diner, known for its, friendly, old-fashioned atmosphere, and classic American comfort food, serving breakfast and lunch daily. What impressed me the most when I entered the restaurant was its cleanliness and old charm yet with comfortable new furniture and decor in the traditional diner style. I invite you to view my photographs accompanying this review to get a better sense of the place and the quality of their food. As I entered and sat at one of the booths, I was greeted by one of their friendly servers, given a menu, and asked what I wanted to drink. I ordered a cup of coffee, which tasted very good. And for food I ordered the Pork Loin breakfast with two fried eggs over-medium, and buttered white toast. As well as two pancakes. My server did an excellent job explaining the terminology of how eggs were cooked there. The ambiance was so relaxed and friendly that I felt welcomed and totally at home. I sat in the main dining room just in front of where the kitchen was located behind a large window where the food was delivered to the servers to take to the customers. The quality of the food was superb, cooked just right. The eggs were fresh and tasty, the pork loins were generous size and cooked to perfection. And even the toast were crispy on the outside and soft in the inside. The pancakes were huge size and nice and fluffy. My server made the appropriate rounds to check on me and provide coffee refills. She also provided me with a glass of iced water without me having to ask for it. Their clientele were people of all ages and all walks of life. Since they open at six in the early morning on weekdays, the time is very convenient for customers to have breakfast early and go on their day. I highly recommend this place for an extraordinary breakfast dining experience and plan to return real soon to try out some other items on their menu.

Last time I visited this restaurant and wrote a review I found it simply amazing: its decor, its ambiance, its food, and most important of all, its excellent customer service by its friendly and very efficient servers. I invite you to read that review and view my photographs accompanying it to get a better sense of my experience here, then. However, this time around, it wasn't so good. And I judge restaurants by their consistency of quality of food and service. This time, the ambiance was nice and the service was excellent by a friendly young lady server, but the quality of the food left much to be desired, especially the way it was cooked. The cook was a total disappointment. I was one of the first ones there when they opened their doors. When I entered, a group of friendly and eager to serve servers who where gathered around chatting, waiting for their customers to arrive, greeted me and gave me a warm welcome, and invited me to take the table of my choice. Soon after I was seated, my server, a friendly young lady came by and took my order. I asked for orange juice and coffee to drink, as well as a glass of iced water. And to eat I asked for the dish that I so much enjoyed and was looking forward to having today: the Steak & Eggs. I ordered a five ounce filet cooked medium rare with two fried eggs cooked over easy, served with homefries as my choice of side, and for bread: white Texas toast. While I waited for my food to come out, I enjoyed drinking my orange juice and coffee, looked over the menu, and looked out the window where I saw in the distance, Ernie's, one of my favorite breakfast restaurants, for its consistency of quality food and service, and relaxing environment. When my server brings my food, the first thing I noticed was my flat filet cut. Usually this cut is for customers who like their steak well done. Last time, my filet was a thick cut one, cooked medium-rare to perfection. Then I saw the fried eggs. They weren't over easy, but over cooked as well. And the toast was over-toasted and laid there while the food was cooking, because it was luckwarm and hard by the time it got to me. When I cut my steak with the steak knife to see if it was pink inside, it was not. It was tough and dry. When my servers. I signaled one of servers asking for my server and tell her about my steak. She replied that now they were using a different meat provider, but that she would take it back and ask for another to be cooked. She only takes the steak back. Shen then brings me another back that not only had a weird shape, but was rare and with gristle. Judging by the quality of the second steak, the cook didn't intend to make amends, or maybe didn't know better. It's a pity because everything else about this restaurant is comforting, but when the food isn't, it takes away the desire to return. I hope the management and the owner of the restaurant read this review and take the necessary steps to correct the misdoing. Because restaurants' success is brought about through repeat customers and not by passersby.

We were ready to order. I cannot remember what everyone got, but I had the Spring chimichurri special and added an avocado. The dining room was packed as was their outdoor patio. The noise was elevated, but not piercing. We had a table near the patio. I enjoyed my coffee as we waited for brunch orders. It's impossible to not be impressed with the hard working staff as they quickly moved through the dining room. After around 15 to no more than 20 minutes the food hit the table. The millionaire bacon is always a huge hit and recommend. Everyone's dishes were correct. My dish overall looked smaller than I've had before. Everyone enjoyed their dishes. The avocado add was two tiny pieces which was disappointing. When our waitress checked in I alerted her the avocado add on was underwhelming. She immediately addressed it with additional. We had a very nice waitress - food came out quickly. I wish I would have gotten some inside pictures - I'm a bit nervous when it comes to that - but it's spacious and trendy inside! I already plan to come back - to try that lemon blueberry cornbread!

Her excuse was that they take online orders as well. That is not my problem. Then the next excuse was that the bagel melt had to be put under the broiler. She and another man were talking about me and I told them if they had something to say it to my face. To think that the owner came down to GA to learn from our friend and owner of a bagel shop. I am appalled that the Roanoke staff had more people and about over double the space and they take three times as long. Two people were standing around not doing (a guy and a girl) anything but talking and laughing. There was even a little kid in the kitchen. He could have only been around 8. That should not be allowed and I am going to the labor and restaurant laws to see it is legal. Where I work, everyone picks up the slack. Piss poor service and Rosa needs to not make excuse and should in my opinion be fired. I did lose my temper but don't tell me one excuse and then another. The last thing she screamed at me that it had only been 12 minutes. I got a couple other receipts from people and their wait time was ten minutes after us. Rosa should be fired and the man with the beard should be reprimanded and even fired. Lastly, most restaurants require something on their hair and beard and NO was wearing them. No hair nets. Rosa had on an Aunt Jemima style wrap but she wasn't work hard either. So sad because we loved the fact that one of our favorite bagel shop from GA was coming here. Update: there is a law that said restaurant staff has to cover hair and beards. The link to the law in VA. https://law.lis.virginia.gov/admincode/title12/agency5/chapter421/section240/

I have truly enjoyed dining in each and every one of them. But Bread Craft, located in the Star City of Roanoke, is in a class of its own. After being ranked 4th among Yelp's Top 50 Most Prolific Elites of 2025, a distinction recognizing my consistent community engagement and high-quality contributions, I decided that this year, as an All-Star Yelp Elite, I not only wanted to be the first to discover new restaurants, businesses, and establishments, and bring them to the attention of the public, but also to go back and write follow-up reviews on those places that impressed me the most during 2025, and Bread Craft Bakery, located in Downtown Roanoke, is the perfect example of one of them. Bread Craft is a premier, artisan European-style bakery established in 2006 by owner Alex Eliades, who besides having a passion for baking, has over 25 years of baking experience, and leads the bakery focusing on traditional slow-fermentation techniques. The bakery is known for its high-quality, scratch-made sourdough, pastries, and Croissants. It evolved from a wholesale operation into a popular 6,000 square foot café on Church Avenue, also supplying local restaurants. The bakery specializes in Franch and German-style baking, utilizing sourdough as a natural leavener. It servers breakfast and lunch items, including sandwiches, salads, and some creative breakfast egg entrées. They are open Wednesdays through Sundays from 8:00AM - 2:00PM and are well known for running out of items before the end of the day. For this review I visited the Bakery / Café for breakfast on two consecutive Wednesdays. The first Wednesday I arrived too late to be able to have their Chorizo & Eggs Cocotte from their Breakfast menu. Breakfast is only served until noon, and I found out about this on that day. So instead I had a Cheese Danish and a house-made Mocha Coffee. Both items were delicious. On the second Wednesday I arrived much earlier for breakfast. Luckily, right before a whole rush of customers arriving to place Take-out orders. As soon as I walked inside I immediately felt comfortable with its clean and contemporary architectural design and decor, and an exposed red brick wall that gave it a warm ambiance. One can see that the owner spent a substantial amount in renovating the place when they moved here, and that they took good care of it, because it looked as if it had just opened for the very first time yesterday. While I was looking over all the baked items they had, I received a friendly greeting and warm welcome from a lady behind the counter who seemed to be the manager and took my order. To start I ordered a Chorizo Quiche which happened to be the Quiche of the day, and a house-made Mocha Coffee. Then since I was planning to turn this into a Brunch, for my main entrée I ordered their Chorizo Cocotte from the Breakfast menu. And for dessert I had a Chocolate Hazelnut Croissant that was simply irresistible. Everything tasted amazingly delicious, especially since I love Chorizo. The Quiche had an amazing crust with the eggs inside cooked with the perfect amount of chorizo. The Chorizo Cocotte was served in an elongated bowl with two poached eggs over Spanish sausage, accompanied by three slices of freshly made Baguette. And if all this wasn't enough, the Chocolate Hazelnut Croissant was the perfect ending dessert to this fabulous put together Brunch. Oh and the coffee was the best of the best. I invite you to view my photographs accompanying this review to get a better sense of the place and the quality of their food. What an outstanding dining experience I just had at Bread Craft. Wonderful ambiance, amazing food, and extraordinary customer service. I highly recommend this Bakery/Café whenever you're in the area. I'm absolutely certain it will become one of your favorites bakery.

On weekdays they are usually opened by 7:00am and closed by 11:30am. On Saturdays they open at 8:00am and are closed by 12:30pm. The owner, a native of Venezuela, seems to come from an Entrepreneural family since he is the brother of the owner of Leonore Restaurant, a Venezuelan food restaurant, now located in Salem, Virginia. From the outside of the storefront, the place doesn't look at all big, but once you enter you find it very clean and nicely painted with tones of orange color which is also in the logo of the Cafe. The business occupies two rooms. On the right side is where the kitchen and ordering counter is located. And on the left side is where the seating area is found. The place is decorated in good taste in a minimalist style. And the small space proviprovides a cozy feeling with the right ambiance to be able to enjoy a good hearty breakfast with family and friends, or even with coworkers, those who work nearby in the Downtown Roanoke area. A large Biscuit Menu is posted on one of the walls and has pictures of the different biscuits. There is also a small black menu on the counter of the ordering area for one to order from. I would have liked to be able to order and stay to enjoy my biscuit there, but since I was in a hurry to go somewhere, I ordered to go a Nice Biscuit (Bacon, Egg, and Cheese). Later on when I reached the place I was going, I sat down and enjoyed eating one of the best Biscuits that I have ever had. It was buttery and soft in the inside and toasty and crispy on the outside. The bacon was thick and good quality, as the egg and cheese as well. I highly recommend this place for enjoying a delicious breakfast in a cozy and relaxed environment. And as for me I will definitely come again with friends, and am looking forward to having another Biscuit, a Cinnamon Roll, and a Premium Hot Chocolate.
