Farfar's has delicious ice cream, to say the least. Rum Raisin is a family favorite, along with butter crunch and chocolate chip cookie dough. Before you order, make sure to ask about all the flavors, because they're all awesome! I am pretty sure they do have dairy free ice cream. The store itself is not a far drive from Duxbury, and it is decorated with birdhouses lining the roof and a cute patio out back to eat your ice cream. Definitely a worthwhile stop. read more

I don't get the chance to visit often but I try when I'm in the area. The decor is dated and reminds me of an old ski lodge a little, but their homemade ice cream is quite good. I usually go for the Danish sweet cream. You can tell quality the most by the simplest of flavors. The sweet cream is creamy, rich, evenly textured, and not too sweet. Come here for a bit if relief from the heat or come here during the fall before they close for the season (around Thanksgiving). read more

Farfar's ice cream is the best ice cream I've ever had, and I've had my fair share of ice cream.

Farfar's is perfect ice cream, so it's no wonder the place has been around forever. Danish Sweet Cream is a better version of the best vanilla you've ever had. Peppermint Stick is by far and away my favorite flavor. This is usually only available during Christmas and at select locations, but Farfar's stocks it in summer. I also tried Oreo, Coffee Oreo, and Mint Chocolate Chip. They're all good but stick to the two above and you'll have no regrets. read more

Great Danish ice cream shop. A Local favorite. Closed during the winter and usually opens in May for the season. The high school students work all summer and leave college pennants in the rafters once they head off to in new school year. There about 20 flavors, my favorites being peach and cookie's-n-cream. The shakes are thick and rich! Strawberry is my go-to. Plenty of seating out back, my only caution is that mosquitoes WILL eat you alive if you stay there long enough during the deep summer months. I got a cup of ice cream $5.50 plus tax and a tip so we're talking close to seven dollars was very mediocre at best. I got the strawberry cheesecake, and there was no strawberries in the ice cream. It was strawberry syrup, and very melted and soft. The worst tasting ice cream. We also tried a chocolate almond which was mediocre at best. I don't know why this place gets rave reviews and charges this much money not to mention you have to have cash they don't except any cards, Venmo, etc.. and no public restrooms which is ridiculous. Overall: big sizes but expensive. Interesting homemade flavors but I would not go again. I tried Bs near by which I loved and recommend, I was excited to try the famous Danish homemade ice cream. I suggest a kiddie because the regular was pretty big but it was almost $6. I wanted to try the milk and cookies which sounded good but they said we could only have one flavor even though the cup was 1 1/2 scoops. The lady sounded annoyed with me for asking for two flavors and when I said I just wanted the peppermint she wrote milk and cookies and I had to reclarify before she placed the order. They also have no sprinkles. I liked that they had non dairy flavors but my non dairy peppermint was not good. It had no flavor and just tasted like vanilla. I was very disappointed because I love mint but literally zero mint. I was expecting peppermint pieces because they had the red green speckle but there was none! Worst of all there were chucks or ice in my ice cream. I first thought they were peppermint pieces but after getting a big one I saw it was ICE. My friends didn't complain about their cookie dough and mint chip which is the only reason why I gave them 3 stars. I've been going here since I was a kindergartner at Alden elementary #aldenrules. I'm no longer a kindergartner (graduated on the second try) and I left Deluxbury a while back. But when visiting the well-endowed beach-front 'burb I try to stop by Farfars. And ya know what? They still make a great Black and White Frappe. Why can't the world be more like the Black and White Frappe? Mmmm, tasty racial harmony. I love that he mooing cow still works (tip jar). When I commented on this to the HS kids working the counter I learned that they paint in the black spots with a sharpie as necessary to keep it looking new. Hilarious! read more

If we weren't with locals I don't know that we would have found this place, but I'm glad we did. If I had to name my vice, ice cream would definitely be it. I'm pretty picky about my ice cream too. Because coffee ice cream is hard to find without chocolate chunks where I live, it is my go to flavor when I'm in New England. I have never liked the cones so I went with a bowl. The regular single scoop was the size that I have come to know as two scoops in scoop shops at home. The ice cream was nice and creamy, had excellent coffee flavor that reminded me of the ice cream my grandpa used to make, and most importantly, didn't leave a funky after taste. Such an awesome time coming to FarFars this weekend for a sweet treat! They have curbside service so you don't even need to leave the car to get your ice cream. I got the chocolate chip cookie dough (my favorite of all time)! It was different than regular ice cream, more creamy and milky. It was delicious. The girl serving us was also very nice. For over 30 years I thought this place was called Fah-fah's... In that same time it is the most consistently good ice cream place in this part of the South Shore, when it is opened. It is one of only three places I go anymore for ice cream. They have a lot of options for ice cream and plenty of places to sit. Can't wait until they open in the spring! read more

The 2 young ladies behind the counter truly seemed to wish they were somewhere else. They are working at an ice cream shop near one of the nicest beaches in Massachusetts, what could they be unhappy about? There was no a/c on and the store was kind of dark, but doesn't ice cream make everything better? I thought so. I definitely recommend this place, just don't look these girls directly in the eyes because you might turn to stone. Maybe we just caught them on a bad day. Stopped here on the way back to Boston from the Cape on the recommendation of a friend who lives in Duxbury. It was seven minutes to closing as we pulled up, but the server was very friendly; the portions were absurdly large; and the ice cream was excellent. (When I say large, I mean that my "large" came in a typical American coffee cup; the kiddie came in what I consider to be a "large" at, say, Toscanini's. But it was quickly devoured. At the risk of sounding like an even older lady than I am... I remember when Farfar's opened! My grandmother used to take me to the library and then we'd stop at Farfar's on the way home. She always got cantaloupe ice cream, and I used to get something (anything) very chocolate-y because I wasn't allowed to get bubblegum, due to a very unfortunate incident involving gum in my hair as a tot. As I got older, my tastes evolved a bit - but I still love Farfar's! It hasn't really changed since my library days... I just have a far greater appreciation for good ice cream! It's always a struggle to choose what to have, but I almost always end up with Grape-Nut, because it's such a unique-to-New England flavor, and I know I won't find it anywhere else. But really, everything is delish, with special mention for their peppermint stick, peanut butter and ginger flavors. Even the Danish sweet cream flavor, which sounds kind of dull, is awesome. The ice cream here is pretty heavy so if you can deal with that then you'll like it here. The prices are pretty steep but afterall, it is called Deluxbury for a reason. They have a decent selection of flavors and their hot fudge and butterscotch toppings are awesome. The main thing I hate about this place is that they don't have jimmies. Come on now, jimmies to ice cream is like ketchup to fries...a must. The lines can be long in the summer but they move pretty fast. The set up here sucks because people just stand in front of the ice cream case and don't move, even after they've paid so you look like the loser bumping into them as you're leaving. Overall this place is good for the ice cream but the service is so so...not too friendly, especially the owner. Word of advice: don't park your car in the fire lane for -5 seconds or you will get scolded like you're in 4th grade. read more

Farfar's brings back so many memories. Growing up in Duxbury, this is the go to place for after dinner or after beach ice cream. It has the richest, creamiest, freshest (lots of est's) taste I've ever had. My favorite flavors have evolved as I've grown up. I remember my first fav being bubble gum. I used to eat the ice cream and spit out the gum bites so I could eat them all together at the end (Kind of gross but everyone who has grown up in Dux has done it). Moving on to my teenage years it was Oreo all the way. There are huge chunks of cookies that were still crunchy! Moving into my 20's my favorite is the Indian Pudding that they make in the fall. It's incredible with apple pie or pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving. Every summer when I go home on the weekends I find myself pulling into FarFar's for an after beach ice cream remembering the wooden spool tables and the rope line divider. :) read more

I LOVE Farfar's! My mom used to take me here for a special treat when I was a wee lad. There were some run-down tennis courts or something in the back that had makeshift seats around. I think they were large, industrial, empty cable spools. If you're looking for a huge selection or ice cream loaded up on mix-ins, then this *isn't* your place. But if you're looking for very fresh, creamy, excellent ice cream with a good (but not expansive) selection then this *is* your place -- all the ice cream is made weekly on premisis. My favorites are their Aerochip (a frequent "special" but not always there), chocolate chip cookie dough, and strawberry shortcake. My wife's favorite is their peanut butter. They of course have kid friendly flavors like chocolate, chocolate chip, and M&M, and also have some exotic flavors like ginger and extreme chocolate. Their portions are very generous, even us adults usually get "kid small" and they're still bigger then most other place's medium, sometimes even bigger then many other place's large. They do also do sundays with the normal mix-ins (hot fudge, cherries, whipped cream, hot apple goo) and shakes, and do have a couple of soft-serve frozen yogurts that are OK but not great. The staff is all high-school girls, but they've been trained well and are friendly and very fast. There is very little indoor seating, everyone sits out on a deck outside, nothing fancy but the dripping ice cream will keep your attention. This place is locally famous for their ice cream, they're near Duxbury Beach (a regular top finisher in the Best of Boston beaches list), so there's lots of happy people stopping by after the beach. read more

OMG, the counter help are local high school students earning a buck and aren't professional, polished retail experts! OMG, they don't have public restrooms! (Neither do a few hundred thousand other retailers in Massachusetts.) OMG they don't have a thousand flavors! Well, no, they don't. But I rate a place on the quality and price of the merchandise they have, without complaining about the merchandise they don't sell, and I'm pretty okay with ownership not willing to sell out on quality by having three dozen tubs of fringe flavors sitting around for weeks getting freezer burn. Being from Duxbury I might be a little biased but I would have a hard time believing it gets any better than this. Farfar's makes the ice cream in the back of the shop and it is delicious. There is a wide-variety of flavors and sizes - I recommend peanut butter or oreo cookie (Mmmmmm). Even the location is great at this place.
