First time on the massive Farm! Very impressive when you drive in and see the vast landscape HORNSTRA FARM has! You notice the Farm Store, Ice Cream Windows and the tall Silos and the huge building where you will see baby calf's and look further in the building rows of cows on both sides being milked! You first want to treat yourself with Ice Cream, which I did not hesitate, so I went for 2 Scopes of different flavors.....Maple Walnut and Black Raspberry which tasted amazing, so incredibly creamy and you can taste the flavors distinctly! I savored my cool treat first by walking along the grounds and watching a bunch of cows huddled in an enclosed pen, then wondered to see the baby calf's! Once done with my Ice Cream I went in the general store and browsed its items. I walked over to a window where they processed the cows milk! It was a day trip here at HORNSTRA FARMS. This place must be always busy since I noticed car traffic going in and out for as long as I was there! Very cute farm store, ended up getting some chocolate milk and heavy cream and of course some ice cream before we left. Staff was nice and quick without much wait even for the ice cream. The chocolate milk was a little thicker than what we're used to but in a good way!! I haven't tried the heavy cream yet, but the ice cream was good. We were going to sit on the bench but there was a little cloud of bugs so we opted for the car. My partner got the waffle cone with purple cow, he said the cone was good but didn't taste a difference in quality for the ice cream. I got strawberry on a sugar cone and we could both taste the difference. I will be honest, the difference is minimal to me. I'd rather just get ice cream nearby or even just get some Dairy Queen. My friends who live nearby have long had nothing by Hornstra Farms milk at their house, so I have been familiar with their milk (and especially their amazing chocolate milk) for many years. But on my recent visit they introduced me to their farm-made ice cream for the first time, which we enjoyed on the farm. This ice cream was truly splendid--we both had the same flavour, coffee with toffee, and a better cup of ice cream I cannot remember ever having had. When you enjoy the ice cream in the bucolic surroundings of their farm, with happy-looking cows doing their thing nearby, you simply cannot do any better. I think Hornstra Farms is my favorite place on the South Shore. I realize how strange that must initially sound . . . but this place is amazing. First, the obvious: this is a working dairy farm. Not only that, but they've been recognized as a Dairy of Distinction by the state. It's an honor given to dairy farmers who set high standards and achieve a level of excellence in overall animal health, farm management, and compliance with public safety. This means a great deal to me--I'm a vegetarian, and I care about where my dairy products come from and that they're obtained in an ethical and humane way. You're able to tour the grounds here. It's a great learning opportunity if you have kids, and you can see first-hand where your milk/dairy products come from. Plus the cows are adorable. Now the fun parts: everything Hornstra makes is incredible. In the spring and summer, the ice cream stand is open. The lines can get long, and for good reason. This is the best ice cream on the South Shore, hands down. There are plenty of options for flavors and toppings, and you can bring a blanket and sit on the front lawn to enjoy your scoops. In the autumn, they make cider donuts every Saturday and Sunday, and they're delicious. When I was pregnant, I lived for the weekends when I could score a bag of these. Their seasonal ice cream flavors are great too. Apple Pie and Pumpkin in the fall, and Eggnog in the winter. Speaking of which, their eggnog is addictive. My husband doesn't even like eggnog, and he loves the stuff. We always have a bottle in our fridge over the holidays to serve at celebrations spiked or just enjoy straight up. We also pre-order turkeys for Thanksgiving and their signature peppermint stick ice cream cakes for Christmas. In our household, it isn't the holidays without one, and they are always a big hit. There's definitely a bit of nostalgia in every bite of that cake. I'm so happy that I live close to Hornstra and I'm able to go there on the weekends to pick up milk and farmstand items for my family. Hornstra family rescued the former Peaceful Meadows in Whitman MA, and are in the process of bringing that location back to its former glory. Observing what they have done in the short time they have owned it, I know they will surpass our expectations. Most of the staff from Peaceful Meadows stayed on to scoop, process and sell the farm's products. Fresh milk! Glass bottles! Still looking to get my hands on the whipping cream as every time I stop in, they are sold out. The ice cream is top notch. I had gone to the stand after the milk store was closed for the day, and the server offered to make up a quart of my requested flavor. That was really sweet of her. We are steadily working through the ice cream list as there are more menu choices than room in our freezer. I cam here on a school trip. The tour was very informitive on how milk and ice cream is made. The kids all enjoyed seeing the cows and petting them. It was the end that I have issues with. Most tours give out a FREE scoop of ice cream at the end. Not this one. They make each kid pay regular price, which meant some needed to go without. To make matters worse one boy dropped his spoon in the dirt. They went up to the window to ask for a new one and needed to PAY for a new spoon. How awful. I will not recommend anyone to have a tour here and to seek out other options. It is ok to come if you want really fresh ice cream. The owner just cares about money. read more

Unlike Justin S. in his great review, I just started going to Hornstra a few months ago, and the place is totally addictive. I completely agree with him that the ice cream is the best in the area. Then again, they have a total leg-up on the competition because they literally use the freshest milk around to make their ice cream. It's located in their backyard. Seriously, if they could get their hands on the ultra-fine chocolate sprinkles (i.e. Jimmies) at Nona's, then they'd totally slay all the ice cream competition in the South Shore. Another thing is their other milk products. They pasteurize but don't ultra-pasteurize their milk. This makes an enormous positive difference taste-wise. Whoa, when you eat cereal with Hornstra's whole milk, now that's a real treat. I'm used to the watery ultra-pasteurized 1% milk that the huge companies produce. But none of it can stand up to Hornstra's whole milk. And anyway, it's become clear that whole milk is better than skim milk as long as you keep your consumption of it under control. Also, their chocolate milk is so thick that it's actually more like a milk shake. A lot of people talk about how chocolate milk is the best post-recovery drink available, and so my guess is that Hornstra's chocolate milk would be fantastic for ultramarathons and triathlons because it's just infinitely better-tasting than the competition. Lastly, their butter... Screw margarine. Run a quick taste test and use Hornstra butter in a couple of ways. First, spread it on toast, and second, use it to grease your pan before cooking eggs on it. Trust me that the Hornstra's butter puts other butters (maybe with the exceptions of Kerrygold and Bordier Butter) to shame. Someone told me that the real big dawg is their cinnamon butter. But employees there told me that during the peak summer months, they don't have the heavy cream to spare for making cinnamon butter because they need as much of it as possible for their ice cream. So, I'll have to update this towards the end of August or September when they start making it again. Lastly, if you like hanging out with calves while eating ice cream, then you can do that here. When you think of life in the big cities where so many things are highly processed, it's places like Hornstra Farms that remind all of us about how generations before us had it right by keeping it simple and real. read more

My family has been coming to Hornstra Farms for ice cream for years. We love walking around and checking out the beautiful farm, animals, and farm store. Also this is hands down the best ice cream in the area - so many unique flavors, toppings and generous portions. But today changed my whole opinion. My son ordered a gigantic sundae, and after they made it, realized that he didn't say he has a peanut allergy. They threw the whole thing away, started from scratch, and re-made his sundae with **a separate tub of ice cream under each flavor for allergic people** and separate toppings / scoopers, so there is absolutely no chance of contamination. I've not seen any place have such a rigorous nut allergen process, and I sure appreciate it. It feels great to know this place cares this much. read more
