This was an adorable bookshop! We were so excited to stumble upon it during our day trip to New Hope. I was initially delighted because it was so well organized and every section seemed to have a generous offering of books. The children's section was particularly large and had books for kiddos of all ages. My sister and I were also excited to snag Farley's Bookshop tote bags to rep this adorable store once we get home. My wife and I read obsessively, averaging a book a week each. We happened upon this shop while spending the day in New Hope. We love a good independent bookstore versus buying from the big guys or ordering from Amazon, and we do what we can to help such shops continue to exist. This one, however, missed the mark in our opinion. This isn't somewhere you go if you have something specific in mind, in my opinion. This store is meant for browsing, as the collection is eclectic. I also wouldn't say you can find several new releases here. There are sections for most interests, which is nice. The store is small, which makes things feel cramped and squeezed in. It also hurts organization a bit. The man at the front desk was slightly cold and not particularly welcoming. Most folks seemed afraid to speak, the store being dead silent. Typically, the indie shops are welcoming and cozy, not stuffy and serious. Atmosphere was a bit off. Prices were fair. However, this is one of the rare times we couldn't find something to read in a book shop... It's not awful and not great, just average. read more

Farley's has always been my favorite shop in New Hope. This place is crammed from floor to ceiling with all kinds of reading material. Before Borders and Barnes & Noble, places like this could be found all around America. Now this is one of the few that remains, steadfast in it's awesomeness. They've got something for everyone. I'm a fan of their cookbook section, but they also have a decent foreign language section and a cute kids area. My favorite thing to do is plop myself down in a nook on the floor and just lose myself. A book-lover's haven. read more

Came back to Farley's last weekend for the first time in a long time and overall things were very good. * The shop itself was mostly deserted which made for easy browsing. * The large, and I mean large, white cat is entirely too friendly. * I was impressed by their selection of '15 calendars already in stock so much that I got one. * A surprisingly large selection of paper dolls for kids. * The two dudes working were very cool and they were spinning some seriously swinging/funky tunes. The issue with high prices hasn't changed and the selection is still a bit haphazard but overall Farley's is an institution that is like no other in the area and we will definitely continue to patronize it every visit to the New Hope area read more

This is an awesome locally-owned book store that has everything. I could spend hours there, just poking around from room to room. And I feel a lot better spending my dollar (ok, my boyfriend's dollar) here than at the big chain stores. I have been going to Farley's since I was in high school (at Pennsbury High School 1995) at least since 1990. I have since moved from Pennsylvania & I make a trip at least once or twice a year home. Farley's has been my bookstore of my formative years. I will always support them. I have always stopped by & purchased a shirt & no less than 100$ of books each time I visit. This will always be my home away from home. I can spend the whole day lost in here, I can leisurely hang out with their resident cat, Butter, who will often help me select books. :) Never close down - you are a part of New Hope History- I am now 40 & I have visited your establishment for 28 years, every year. This is a treasure trove of books with helpful staff & awesome collection. If it exists, it's here & you can find it in this magnificent myriad of literature. Usually the first place we visit when venturing up to New Hope. It's less than a block from the theater parking area and always a pleasure to step into. The bookstore smells like an old library and you'll find the same variety of titles. I'm partial to the 50's style history books and their selection of Buddhist literature. You'll also find tons of midevil era hardbacks and some pre-government-edited German history, which is rare these days. Be careful where you step because the cat might just be right at your feet, or might pop up onto a shelf startling the heck out of you! The prices are great. I walked out once with a handful of books for around $50 and wound up having to carry them everywhere for the next three hours of my Main Street visit. A great independent bookstore, a must for shopping if you're in New Hope. They have a great selection of Penguin and Oxford editions of your favorite works of literature, as well as tons of local authors, new books, bestsellers, used cds, etc. Definitely check out the back sale section- found two beautiful Sabuda pop up books for Christmas at half off! I've been visiting the New Hope area for over 25 years. This place is an institution here. Many of the businesses have come and gone and Farley's remains. A throwback to the days of the old book shop. Kind of cluttered. Kind of musty. A very old building. Not super organized. Just the way I like it. Makes looking around a little more of an exploration. Not much in the way of discounts, but you may find something here you can't elsewhere. It's fun to poke around a REAL bookstore (not Barnes & Noble or Boring's ahem - I mean, Border's). The people here are very nice - family owned and run - and they can recommend a great book or 3. It's tight and cramped - but if you are here without your kids and NOT in the tourist-packed summer or Xmas season, It's a great place to just meander around and read. And they have a cat! read more

I have literally been getting books from Farley's book shop since I was in grade school, and now I'm buying books for my own kids there! The staff is amazingly helpful and knowledgeable, and the bookstore is so quaint that it feels straight out of Harry Potter or some other fairytale!! Excellent old fashioned private book shop in New Hope, PA. Privately owned book stores are a dying breed in this country. Its great to know shops like Farley's still exist. When you come to Farley's you are going to get real customer service, because such service is essential to the store's survival. The staff will take the time to help you locate what you need and if they don't have it, they will most definitely go out of their way to order it for you. I know that in this day and age of Amazon and other on-line book retailers that the need to actually leave your home to buy a book might seem antiquated, but there is just something special about an old fashioned person to person book shop that makes the experience something completely different and worthwhile. read more

This local bookshop is outstanding. One can spend a couple hours browsing and find marvels, or ask at the desk for prompt attention to finding what you need--and they will also place orders for what you need. It is strong in every section: poetry, fiction, children's, science, art, gardening, travel, cooking..... My one warning would be that, if you are a person with allergies, you will certainly experience issues here. The staff really ought to take a slow-business hour now and then and do some vacuuming. It took me hours to recover from my visit, and others around me were sneezing and clearing throats as well--not seasonal distress but dust, abundantly visible and detectable respiratorially. If not for that, I'd give it 5 stars. Keeping patrons comfortable should be part of the hospitality they offer. read more

This store is awesome! You simply do not find old bookstores anymore and, when you do, they're basically old middle school libraries with crusty used books and titles no one has ever heard of. This place looks, smells and supplies the part a reading enthusiast seeks! I've been coming to this quaint book shop since childhood and definitely have a special affection for it. It is one of my favorite places in New Hope to visit and almost impossible for me to leave without buying some new books. It's definitely very different from one of the big box stores if that's what you're used to - funky, old interior with the books tucked into lots of nooks and crannies. Farley's is one of my very favorite places in New Hope...it's difficult to even know where to start with this review, as I've been coming here for years. Mom and Pop bookstores are such a precious resource for small towns, and Farley's does not disappoint: their staff has incredible taste, and can offer great recommendations off the cuff. They are as friendly as they are knowledgeable, and every one of them is passionate about what they do: many aspire to be writers, and have been published. This being said, the workers at Farley's also understand how important it is to support small presses, such as McSweeney's, PM Press, Bloof Books and Last Gasp, just to name a few. It's one of those places, that, to me, immediately felt like home. I find the floor-to ceiling bookshelves to be cozily cluttered, but never messy or disorganized. In fact, I've never had trouble finding what I needed at this shop. If I ever did, the workers have an eidetic, to the point of seeming preternatural, knowledge of their bookstore. Verdict: Farley's is the absolute best. If you love reading, go support their charming store right now! (And, as many other reviewers have mentioned, the fat yellow cat is an added incentive. His name is Butter, and he is one of the most endearing creatures I've ever encountered: be sure to rub his enormous belly on the way in.) read more

It is refreshing to walk down Main St, New Hope and see so many "mom and pop" type businesses. Farley's is no different. I originally stopped in to see if they would break a dollar for me so I could feed my parking meter. They happily obliged which was nice of them. They have a fairly large selection of books - even some of the new releases. The only issue I have with this place is that everything seemed cluttered and almost on top of each other. This could be due to the fact that the place itself isn't nearly as big as some of the other larger, chain stores. But, definitely a cool, local business. read more

Farley's is like an old friend you may have lost touch with for years, but the moment you step through those doors it's like no time elapsed at all. In today's technologically driven world of constant change, it gives me great pleasure to visit this bookstore and see that it has the same look and feel, more or less, that it did 20+ years ago when I was introduced to it by my book-loving father. For years, my dad and I would make a yearly pilgrimage to Farley's around the holidays, a trip I always looked forward to both for the possibility of glimpsing the resident cat and having a chance to check out a wide selection of new books, pre-internet. These days, it's easy to get the same exact books cheaper online, however, I would argue that the difference in cost is but a small price to pay for the continued support of independent community bookstores. read more

Farley's is always an immensely entertaining and informative visit. I like the staff suggestions and always feel as if there is particularly confident and adventuresome hand at work in picking books they feature. Best/worst part: I always spend more money here than I expected. On the other hand, my family is always extremely pleased with the unexpected treasures I find. I admit to being slightly concerned about the future of the shop since the death of founder Jim Farley, so I was both relieved and particularly pleased to find the store looking so much more open and accessible on visit last week. I walked in at 10:55 on a Friday night in June and the guy working the desk said, "Hey, we're just about to close." I looked at him in confusion. "I was just online, and I checked your hours," I said. "It said you're open Friday and Saturday from 10AM to midnight." Neither he nor the man next to him (a guy who knows me by name) responded; instead, the first guy asked, "Is there something in particular you were looking for?" I said no, that I had just driven here because I thought they were open until midnight. After that, silence. No apologies, no one even asked me where I read these hours. Well here it is: right on this page. They may change it now, now that I'm complaining, but as of Friday, June 11th, 2010 it says Fri and Sat, 10am to 12am. And don't get me wrong, I get it: you can't please everyone. Maybe it was a long day--or maybe this happens all the time. Maybe people walk in in the last 5 minutes all the time and it just wears on them to have to seem sympathetic. But you know what? We all go through it. Waiters and waitresses hate being told they forgot about this and this. Teachers hate having to answer questions about the grades they gave, etc etc. But guess what: customers hate the insensitive eye rolls that come from employees who mentally jumped ship an hour ago. Personally, I would rather pay more or go someplace else than support a place that forgets that, in the end, the customer is still number one. And yes, I'll still go into Farley's from time to time, if only to see if something interests me. Then I'll drive home and order it from Amazon. read more

A nice, independent bookstore that sells both new and used books as well as some vinyl. Added bonus, they have a bookstore cat, or at least they did when I was there. I love spending an afternoon here, digging through the stacks. They have a TON of Dover books, including an impressive selection of musical scores. Best bookstore I have ever been to. The staff are extremely knowledgeable, helpful, and friendly. They have an excellent assortment of fiction and nonfiction. I also appreciate their classical CDs. They are able and willing to acquire books that aren't in stock. I purchased The Complete Works of William Shakespeare here. Gotta love a bookstore that carries Edmund Spencer's The Faerie Queene. Plus they have the only free parking lot in New Hope. I hope Butter the cat is well. read more
