Love. This was momentary love. Saunter down State Street and maybe the chic clothing stores are for you. I'll admit, they beckoned me with their boutique windows. But it was 3 o clock, and I was on a mission--to avoid super-turnpike traffic and to purchase a book. Well, I bought three. The County Bookshop is up a few brick steps on the right side of the street. Saw the name; had to go. Used and out-of-print books. I broke into a smile. An old home converted into this bookshop, it is a fitting dressed-down arrangement. Entering, there are rooms to the left and right. At the right rest philosophy books, and near the register first-edition copies of books. One I saw was a C.S.Lewis story. These books are not in the most beautiful condition, and many seem to have been gifts with cursive notes scrawled in the covers. But these little rooms are not all! Browsers can wander further to another room, and another after that. Each section is distinctly labeled. Signs even direct you to poetry and literature. There is everything from philosophy to travel to gardening and food to French lit and surely beyond. The best is yet to come. Outside sits a rack of books for 35 cents. Inside, there is another near the cashier, where each book is 50 cents. The gentleman, presumably the owner, was soft-spoken and had no idea what to say other than Thanks when receiving praise for the store. Perhaps he isn't used to it, since apparently there are other book stores in the very near vicinity. Buck County Bookshop is what I saw first, and walking out with Philosophy of Science ($7.95) Intro to Mathematical Philosophy ($10) and World Orders Old and New ($7.50) I was pleased with myself. This is a terrific place to spend an hour or a few. It is an old house converted into a book store with nothing but used books. All of the books are in gently used condition and 50-70% off the original price. The selection is not the largest, but it is absolutely cozy and a great spot to try and discover your next great read. The books are organized by category/genre and arranged on individual shelves throughout several different rooms. The ground floor and the second floor combine to offer a total of a dozen rooms filled with books. You can come across the occasional well loved and filled with individual commentary along the margins. More often you will find a book you have been meaning to get but never took the time. If you take the time and you don't mind browsing you can definitely find some bargains. There is also frequently a rack of books on the front porch going for less than a $1 each. There are certainly larger bookstores and stores with larger selections. This one blends perfectly into this small-town and on a lazy weekend afternoon can certainly offer up some wonderful books for real bargain prices. read more

This shop has older books than its neighbor Central Books -- local history books, good philosophy selection, poetry and plays, and even drawings of writers and literary figures from texts to pick through. Again, this owner is not too friendly and will have to run over to Central Books to swipe a card if you want to use credit. Although it's a small place, the selection is good and well organized with clear labels. I hope visitors check reviews ahead of time, because not knowing the difference between the two shops and their boundaries irritates both owners! This is a great bookstore, ruined completely by the proprietor. There are many interesting books in categories not often found in the area, or outside of a major college town. And the prices are reasonable. The problem is that the owner is not. A friend and I were in the store recently, and had already picked out a few books we were toting around. (We were obviously going to buy something). My friend, who teaches college, was browsing an anthology and wanted to make note of the title of one of the essays within. She took out her phone, to photograph the reference, and immediately the owner sidled up to her. "These books are for sale." My friend said she understood that, and was only making note of the title of one of the essays. The owner then took the book out of my friend's hands, put it back on the shelf, and again repeated that the book was for sale. My friend took the book back down again, and said fine, she would write the title of the essay down on some paper, if that was ok. The owner snatched the book out of her hands, put it back on the shelf, and said "We don't do that here. This book is for sale. If you want to make use of the book, you can buy it. The price is right here." At that point, we put what we had already picked out back and left the store. The book she was "protecting" so fiercely can be found on Amazon for $0.01; her price was $8.95. I'm not sure what she was protecting - the valuable information in the book, priced elsewhere at a penny, cost her well over $10 in actual sales (we were just starting to browse when this happened, so we might have spent more). I love used bookstores, and would happily pay 100x more for a book I could browse myself, simply to support used bookstores and keep them in business. The woman who runs this store, however, is a maniac. Treating customers like idiot children or criminals simply for taking down a reference is very sad. How is browsing even allowed in such a store if information cannot be carried out - memory is ok, but writing something down is not? From the look of it, this woman has very little business. I hate to say it, but she reminds me of many of the owners on Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares - full of self-righteousness and loathing of her customers. Sad to say, but she deserves to go under. Hopefully someone living in the 21st century will buy her stock when she does! read more

This is a great bookshop! They have really good prices on their books, most of which are in very good condition. There are lots of books to choose from and they purchase books that are current and don't have much wear or tear. I love this shop! read more

I just went here today with my fiance and my daughter and I fell in love with the place. They have so many books, too bad we went so late. We spent $20 and got 2 children's book and 4 novels. So we left very happy :) read more

I am from out of town but have been here several times and spent an average of $30-60 each time. I will go out of my way to spend money in independently owned bookstores over larger chain giants, but to do so I need to be able to spend the time comfortably browsing through what is often a more eclectic collection. The last few times I've been in there I've felt "the eyes of the ranger" eyeing me suspiciously. Having worked for an unnamed, large and recently bankrupt bookstore for 8+ years, loss prevention tactics like, "did you have anything you'd like me to hold up at the desk for you?" are annoying but able to be ignored. However, when the same woman (owner) returns moments later to say, "I think I'm going to take a break now," to which I respond with a polite smile and an "OK?" before my dim wit realizes she wants me to leave, I was quite, unfortunate pun intended, put out. Mind you, this is 4 in the afternoon on a Saturday. Now, perhaps she needed to pinch one, perhaps she had a raging headache and needed to close her eyes, perhaps she was overcome with the loss of Whitney Houston and couldn't bear continuing the charade of what was suddenly exposed as a shallow and superficial transaction between two human beings in the face of such violent existensial dread. Perhaps it was none of the above. Why it happened is not the point. What I know is that she made me feel shady and, even more regretfully, that I had barely begun browsing the fiction section when I was so uncerimoniously booted from the store. I said, "Oh. You want me to leave? So what's the deal? Will you be opening back up?" She responds, "Well, yes. I will probably be opening again in a little while, I just can't say how long." Seriously? All that being said, I will probably be back. I like the philosophy section (it is actually organized and neat, unlike most used bookstores) and have found some lovely treasures in the fiction section (Oakley Hall, Kazantzakis, Richard Brautigan). And at other times the lady has been more than helpful in trying to help me recall an author or title. It just hurt my feelings, is all. I thought we had something, Bucks Co. I live in Washington State and corresponded with the owner about a specific and rather expensive book that I wanted to purchased for my daughter as a gift. The owner was kind and courteous, even helpful, by directing me to other sources to help me with a sincere answer to my questions. He emailed me back a week later, after having gone the extra mild to acquire an answer for me and I was able to purchase the book I wanted through Bucks County Bookstore and was extremely grateful for such consideration and help.
