A Newtown institution! The NBRE has a great used book selection and is a top notch spot to find some new or used vinyl gems. Nice selection of whatever you're looking for music-wise: rock, jazz, pop, punk, indie, blues, etc. Very cool vintage vibes inside and a very helpful and friendly staff. The owner Chelsea knows her stuff! Can't find something you're looking for? She'll track it down for you. Plus, they advocate for the local community. Recently, they gave away gift credits to local teachers for their contributions to our community. Very cool! I can't believe this place crams all my favorite things into one store: used books and records!

Saw this store on Facebook a while back and figured I'd give it a try when visiting the nearby farmers market. Small downtown bookstore that's been around a while. The owner, Chelsea, was helpful with questions I had. It's an old timey store, so expect piles of books being sorted constantly. They have Records and CDs too - they participate in the annual Record Store Day which was this Saturday. Their Facebook page outlines what they buy and how store credit and prices work. I'd have to come here a few times to properly browse the whole store. I traded last time and got some neat mysteries in return, including Celebrated Cases of Judge Dee, which I had been looking for for a while. And some mystery authors new to me, such as Rebecca Pawel, Simone St. James and Jacqueline Winspear. Parking on the street and in a nearby municipal lot. Would definitely come back when in the area. read more

This is one of the cutest record stores that I've ever been to. It's my favorite. They filmed "Signs" here and it has a lot of small town charm. The owner, "Chelsea", is so nice and knowledgeable about books and music. She is very helpful and welcomin. I get a lot of my records here and Chelsea will order any album that you want. The pricing is top notch. As an added bonus there's a nice sitting area in the back of the store. read more

If you're a vinyl aficionado, you'll love browsing through the Newtown Record and Book Exchange. I like the place a lot. I want to love it, but I usually can't find any records I want. So it's not really that hot of a shopping experience for me. I typically will buy any good rock, alternative and metal LP's that I can find. First time in, I found 2 vintage Kiss records for about 6 bucks each. Great quality. Later on I also found some amazing stuff from the Who and Led Zeppelin. But it took lots of visits to come across them. If I could give any constructive criticism it would be to thin out the Air Supply, Dan Fogelberg and Abba type stuff in favor of some classics. Space is at a premium here, so why not fill it to the brim with Rock and Roll Hall of Fame caliber artists? It's a bummer to wade through so many lame records. That said, record shops are so hard to find these days, that I can't help but feel the Newtown Record and Book Exchange is a notable community asset. I hope they stick around for a while! read more

Such a great gem in a beautiful downtown. The staff at the NBRE is so helpful and gracious. The store owner took the time to help me search for a certain author during my visit. Incredible selection of new and used records, and more books than you could read in 10 quarantines. Shop owner and staff go above and beyond to help you find what you're looking for, and even make suggestions based on your personal tastes if you don't know exactly what you want. I felt welcomed, comfortable and safe the whole time, and left with a handful of children's books as well as two used records in fantastic condition. I love this place and plan to support this local shop as long as it is standing, which hopefully is forever! read more

I went here for the first time on Friday, it was a great time!! My dad has been going here since he was in high school and told me about this place. I'm so glad he did because I had a great time! I'm definitely going to come back! I came not realizing they did exchanges but now I am definitely going to come back with some old books I was going to get rid of anyway. Today I stop by and purchased 38 kids books. They were all 1/2 off of original price or discounted much more. The books were all in wonderful condition. The best part was that many were top sellers. I know my 4th grade class will appreciate these books! I'll be back again in the future. read more

Newtown Book & Record Exchange has a prime location on State Street, Newtown, right next door to Starbucks. If this isn't a gold mine just based on overflow from the S.$$$, I don't know what is. First impressions walking through the front door is one of narrow aisles and stacks of used books and Cd's (also some tapes, etc), with hand written labels to direct you and creaky wooden floors that have been tread on for more than a century. Yes, there is also a dustiness and slight scent of decaying paper, as would be expected where thousands of old books are stored. It all adds to the overall gestalt of entering a literary and musical time warp. It is quite enjoyable if you like this sort of thing. I do. Likely due to the rent paid for this location, the prices on the books and music are higher than seems reasonable, and the trade in policy is not designed to provide value to the trader. Over the years, I have purchased a few things here on impulse, but overall aside from wanting the old place to survive, the selection is generally not what I am looking for, and the cost offsets the cultural and historic imperatives. Definitely worth a long browse while sipping caffeine from next door, but if you have visited the Princeton Record Exchange you know what a dedicated used music emporium is all about. This one is not that. As to the books, you might find something you like, but if you don't, the Newtown Library Company is about 2 blocks away. You can join and likely find what you seek and be able to return it after reading. Recycling at its earliest and best. read more

This is a cute neighborhood shop that sells used books, new and used CDs, and records. If they don't have something you're looking for, the staff will be happy to order it for you, although they're not exactly the warmest bunch of folks in Newtown. There's a Starbucks right next door, and they welcome coffee drinkers. I regularly buy their books, which are half the cost of the list price. Good deals, especially for older books that have lower list prices. There are piles and piles, but everything is pretty organized. It is very laid back, as evidenced by their hours on Sunday: "sometimes 12 - 4, call before." Nice. read more

The woman that runs this store has been around for years and years, and she's still happy to serve you. This great old book store has so, so much more character than Barnes & Noble, and while it doesn't have a cafe right inside, you'll find a Starbucks conveniently half a block away. The shelves are filled with treasures for those with time to explore. I always enjoy scouring the used CDs. She's got a decent vinyl collection, too. read more

Love this place! Unfortunately every time I get the chance to make it down to Newtown, they are closed. But I went in there the other day finally to see what their record selection was like. Wasn't the greatest selection I'd ever seen, but I did find an old Grateful Dead record and a couple others I'd been looking for. They have mostly books inside, and a lot of media (cassettes, CD's, etc). I could spend hours in here looking at stuff and still not see it all. The woman who runs it is very nice and helpful. Would recommend this place to avid readers who notice their bookshelf becoming overrun with books they'll never read again. Go trade them in and get something new (used). Better than sitting in a pile in the corner of your office, right? read more

This used bookstore used to be a really great place to buy books, trade in old used books, and buy used LP records, CDs, tapes, etc. I hate to give this place 2 stars as it's a great small used bookstore and a local business for the small town, but it's not like it once was decades ago in the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s. Unfortunately, with store credit you can only use it on used books which are very expensive. Not all of the books are in the best condition either. Also, when you trade in used books the staff is extremely picky about which books they will or will not take, claiming that some are too old or not current, despite how they are a used bookstore and should want pretty much any book or the potential for any customer to buy a book there instead of going on the internet to buy it a lot cheaper. The staff also takes forever to decide which of your used books they will take and which ones they will not, and they do not give you that much store credit for trading in used books, while selling them for a lot of money than the amount of store credit you get. Also, when you trade books in you can use the store credit only for books which is silly as they sell music there as well and you should be able to use the store credit to also buy music. I would never buy music here as it's extremely expensive, you cannot use any credit from trading in books, and you can just buy music online for a lot less money. read more

I must admit that I have not visited this Newtown institution in probably 15 years. However, my nostalgia for the place forces me to comment on how much this staple of Newtown has shaped me. I recall visiting the Book & Record for the first time as a small kid when it was located a few doors down in the basement of what I believe is the Godwin Building. I fondly remember getting my haircut from Ernie and then wandering over to the book & record to spend some of my hard earned cash on some cassettes... I even remember my first purchase! I am sad to say that it was DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince's album "And In This Corner"...Please don't judge me... Over the years my taste in music changed and the Book And Record made it possible for me to find pre-used cassettes and cd's at reasonable prices. However, I hope that a business like this can survive the onslaught of digital alternatives... read more

This is a great little shop in Newtown. They have a pretty big selection of paperbacks, cds, and records. I was looking for a specific record for my brother for a present, and I called and spoke with the woman who runs the place. She told me that she didn't have it, but that she would be happy to order it for me. A few days later, she gave me a call and let me know that the record was in- to purchase it from her was about $5 less than what I would have spent online! I will definitely contact her again when I am looking for an off the wall record. read more

I may be missing something here, but something seems terribly off about a used bookstore that is picky about buying "older" paperbacks, yet has dozens for sale that are. One book I picked up was over 12 years old and was still "half the cover price" of $15.00, i.e. $7.50. A quick check of Ebay showed a newer edition of this book with free shipping for alot less money, as were additional ones I checked. They don't seem to realize that they are competing with online options that are almost always way less. In addition, if you are lucky enough to get any credit, it isn't applicable to CD's or DVD's....just the old paperbacks. On top of all of this, your credit expires within 1 year! I live in Doylestown and the used bookstores here price their books for less and credit never expires. Surprised they do enough business to stay solvent. Plus the fact: in my opinion, the selection is terrible. Never find anything current. read more

The paperbacks are so well organized, that you can go directly to the section written by a favorite author. The store could use more space, since sometimes additional books by an author may be behind others, for instance, but whenever we have been there, the person at the desk has always known exactly where to find them. Small, but diverse selection of indie, alt rock and classic rock records. The staff is friendly and helpful as well. Mostly books though; the records are sort of scattered throughout the store in different boxes so make sure to walk though the entire store to see the full selection. The only issue I have with the store is the price. A lot of the records, I feel, are $5-10 too expensive compared to other stores with comparable selections. There are even a small number of the records that are laughably overpriced. One I remember seeing is the Division Bell reissue (the two disc one) which sells for about $36 on amazon was being sold for around $80 here. Still worth a visit. read more
